Review
"At last a book that explains to me why I feel so much better if I run in the morning! This very readable book describes the science behind the mind-body connection and adds to the evidence that exercise is the best way to stay healthy, alert, and happy!"―Dr. Susan M. Love, Dr. Susan Love's Menopause and Hormone Book and Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book

"Bravo! This is an extremely important book. What Cooper did decades ago for exercise and the heart, Ratey does in SPARK for exercise and the brain. Everyone--teachers, doctors, managers, policy-makers, individuals trying to lead the best kind of life--can benefit enormously from the utterly convincing and brilliantly documented thesis of this ground-breaking work. People know that exercise helps just about everything, except anorexia, but it will surprise most people just how dramatically it improves all areas of mental functioning. So, get moving! You're brain will thank you and repay you many times over."―Edward Hallowell, M.D., The Hallowell Centers

"This book is a real turning point that explains something I've been trying to figure out for years. Having experienced symptoms of both ADHD and mild depression, I have personally witnessed the powerful effects of exercise, and I've suspected that the health benefits go way beyond just fitness. Exercise is not simply necessary, as Dr. Ratey clearly shows, it's medicine."―Greg LeMond, Three-time winner of the Tour de France

"SPARK is just what we need-a thoughtful, interesting, scientific treatise on the powerful and positive impact of exercise on the brain. In mental health, exercise is a growth stock and Ratey is our best broker."―Ken Duckworth, M.D., Medical Director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness

The Brain on Exercise
By steven langston
This book explains in clear terms the role exercise plays in our mental processes. Moving our muscles produces proteins that play roles in our highest thought processes. Ratey says, "thinking is the internalization of movement." He illustrates this with the story of the sea squirt that hatches with a rudimentary spinal cord and 300 brain cells. It has only hours to find a spot of coral on which to put down roots or die. When it does put down roots, it eats its brain. According to Ratey only a moving animal needs a brain.

He begins with the value exercise has for the learning process in high school students: improved academic performance, alertness, attention and motivation.

He cites studies that say we can alter our mental states by physically moving. He said depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. He then presents a chapter where depression is relieved in case studies by exercise.

Among the areas Ratey covers are: stress, depression, ADD, and aging. This book is a great motivator for exercise.

However, Ratey's work was preceded by Glenn Doman's. Doman advocated exercise for brain injured children in the 1950s when the only 'treatment' was to institutionalize them. He later started a `super babies' program. Both the educational and medical establishments attacked and marginalized Doman's work.

A Fascinating, Enjoyable Read
By John V. Forrest
John Ratey is a Harvard psychiatrist who subspecializes in the clinical use of exercise in mental diseases. In Spark he examines clinical and lab research in neuro-hormones, the chemical soup that determines how well our brain works.
The front plate quote by Plato says it all," In order for man to succeed in life, God provided him with two means, education and physical activity. Not separately, one for the soul and the other for the body, but for the two together. With these two means, man can attain perfection." (To this I'd like to add good nutrition, sorry Plato.)
This book has many interesting stories together with the technical information. It is a quick, enjoyable read.
We feel good when we exercise because it allows the brain to function at its best. Muscle building, cardiovascular conditioning, reducing stress and tension are secondary. Our society and its conveniences have made it difficult to get enough physical activity. We now have to work at it.
The Naperville School District (19,000 students) west of Chicago has redesigned its P.E. system. All students participate in P.E. classes which develop cardiovascular fitness. In class students use heart rate monitors to gauge their degree of exertion. The only games played are ones with high levels of sweat like three-on-three basketball. Students are taught to encourage and support each other. The results have been dramatic: 10% of the number of overweight children found in other school districts; only 3% of students in Naperville are overweight. In an international study of 230,000 students those from Naperville were sixth in math (first in the U.S.A.) and first in science, ahead of Singapore, China, Korea and Japan. To confirm that the fitness program is key a study compared test results after P.E. class with results several hours later. Scores were much higher right after the fitness class, findings which confirmed prior animal studies. Vigorous exercise makes your brain work much better especially right after the exercise but also longer term.
Naperville is an upper middle class community where many parents are scientists or engineers. Titusville, Pennsylvania is not. It is a failed factory town north of Pittsburgh where they copied the Naperville P.E. program beginning in 2000. Test scores went from below state average to 18 percent above. Since 2000 there has not been one fist fight in the junior high school. They were common before.
A share of the 2000 Nobel Prize was given to a Eric Kandel who demonstrated that practice (piano, vocabulary etc.) caused neurons to grow new branches and made branches get larger and better connected to adjacent neurons. A neuro-chemical, BDNF, has the same effect plus it causes new neurons to form from stem cells and protects neurons from decay and death. Exercise elevates BDNF levels throughout the brain. Other beneficial body and neuro-hormones also increase during exercise. In summary, exercise increases alertness and motivation; it encourages new connections between neurons; it causes new neurons to form. Adding a complexity to exercise with things such as yoga, Pilates, tennis, or martial arts is even more effective than simple exercise.
Exercise has been studied in patients with depression, stress, anxiety, attention deficit, addiction, menstrual and menopause problems. In general exercise has outperformed standard drug therapy in each of these conditions. That's not even taking into consideration the considerable side effects and cost of medications.
It's been well documented that Alzheimer's disease incidence is much lower in regular exercisers (50% less). Animal studies have shown exercise effects in models of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's where findings in the brain were significantly reversed. Mental exercise is equally important. An epidemiologic study in Minnesota has followed an order of nuns who stay very active. When one died at age 85 of a heart attack she was found to have severe Alzheimer's disease at postmortem exam. But she had tested in the 90% percentile on cognitive tests shortly before her death. Severe pathologic Alzheimer's due to her genetic makeup had no effect on her life. Billions of dollars are being spent on genetic and pharmaceutical cures for this devastating disease, but we already know that a combination of diet, exercise and vigorous mental activity will prevent it.

Ratey's exercise prescription:

Aerobic - Four times a week; 30-60 minutes at 60-70% of maximum heart rate (220 - age = theoretical maximum heart rate)

Strength - Twice a week with weights or resistance equipment.

Balance and Flexibility - Twice a week for thirty minutes. Yoga, Pilates, Martial arts, dance are possibilities.

In general more is better, harder is better, with another is better.

N.B. Interval Training (e.g. 30 second bursts of maximal effort several times during the aerobic sessions causes increase in human growth hormone, a valuable healing and anti-aging substance that normally is at low levels later in life. The author lost his `spare tire' a few weeks after adding this to his exercise regime. Nothing else had worked.)

The brain-exercise connection finally explained !!
By M. Bankal
Having ready 2 previous books by John : The users guide to brain and Driven
by distraction i was looking forward to reading SPARK. I was especially
interested in learning how John was going to tie exercise with the brain
functioning since i am a strong supporter of exercise and have experienced
its benefits. I knew before reading SPARK that exercise in some way does
make you feel better. But SPARK puts it in perspective from a scientific
point of view. The chapters on Stress and depression particularly caught my
attention since most of us struggle with these 2 issues at some point in
life and again most of us turn to popping a pill to deal with it. If its as
simple as getting on a treadmill or a bike and working out for 30-45
minutes without any side effects, then it seems only logical to do it. The
BDNF (Miracle-gro as John calls it) was a very interesting read for me. I
did had to go back and re-read certain topics as was it too much medical
terms to comprehend in one read. But once i got it, it became permanent and
that's the beauty of this book.
Its simple yet powerful in its message. The simplicity comes from the fact
that "you goto workout ". The power comes from the facts / data that proves
"why you goto workout". Once the reader ties the two together, the message
is very clear and hopefully will remain for a lifetime with the reader.
Today if you look around there is a lot of awareness among people about the
ill-effects of obesity. There are TV programs, advertisements, books about
why exercising is good for you and how it will help you be more fit. But
this is the only books that tells you that exercise will also make your
brain fit along with your body. The brain-body connection is important and
one cannot be ignored over the other.

From Library Journal
Compiled by the authors of The Women's Desk Reference (LJ 10/1/93), this chronology presents a masterly array of facts, though the format precludes any interpretation of events or much in the way of detail. Worldwide in scope where historical coverage is available, the work focuses on known wars, revolts, and military events. Limited space is given to the development of weapons and tactics, but there is inordinate coverage of political and social issues. In addition, one wonders whether it is appropriate to include certain dates, e.g., Ronald Reagan's birthdate and the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to a Soviet dissident, in a work nominally on warfare. The closest comparable work is possibly Michael Clodfelter's Warfare and Armed Conflicts (McFarland, 1992), which only covers the 18th century to the present. An index would have substantially increased the value of this work. A marginal purchase for most libraries.

Not really very good
By J. Adams
If you think that mankind is anything other than the most savage animal on the planet, you might want to read this book to look at the thousands of wars, and countless battles over the millenia as tribe fought tribe.
This book gives a very superficial overview of history, in chronological form, and gets more detailed as it moves into the modern age. but it really isn't much but a listing of wars, and at 500 pages, shows how many there were, but doesn't do much other than show the timelines of events. No context, no analysis, no distinguishing of major vs. minor, and not really very good.
but it is cheap, and not without some merit.

all we are asking is to give peace a chance
By Eugene A Jewett
Those who remember John and Yoko Lennon chanting this implausible nostrum, about the prospects for peace, will see the absurdity of the notion when they read this book. As long as man has existed there have been those among us who ascribe to power and dominion over all. The only way to staunch their ardor is to be ready to fight them. This is the cost of sustaining individual liberty, the touchstone of western civilization. Think of it as facing the bully down so he doesn't take your lunch money. Any other prospects for a solution other than this readiness to do combat fly in the face of all human history and common sense. This book will disabuse those who harbor these fantasies of the peacenik.

Praise for the film Twilight:
"Epic! Sexy, stylish and altogether the coolest movie of the year"
- Shawn Edwards, Fox TV

". . . getting Catherine Hardwicke to direct Twilight was a shrewd move, because the youthquake specialists of Thirteen treats teen confusion without a trace of condensation. . . .She has reconjured Meyer's novel as a cloudburst mood piece filled with stormy skies, rippling hormones, and understated visual effects."
- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

"Hardwicke has connected so intensely to the Meyer novel that it's hard to imagine anyone else making a better version."
- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

From the Inside Flap

Twilighters will love it!
By Holly Thatcher
I'm still giving this 5 stars, but there were a few things that I found a tiny bit disappointing...

1. The book is 163 pages, but there is not much text and the pages are small. It took me less than and hour to read it from cover to cover.

2. The book is written in Catherine's handwriting which can be hard to read sometimes.

3. I thought the book could have covered the topics more in depth. I thought the chapters about how they shot various scenes were interesting, but they made me wish I could ask her questions (and get the answers!). There were so many more things I wanted to know about how and why she made different decisions in shooting the movie.

Despite those 3 things, I still thought the book was really interesting and fun to read. I saw the movie twice in the theaters and this book made me excited for the DVD release (especially the bonus material). I realized after reading the Director's Notebook there were lots of little details from the movie I had missed. Here's one example: After the nomad vampires kill the security guard they wear his clothes, James wears his jacket and Victoria wears his "Kiss me, I'm Irish" t-shirt. I never noticed that before.

This book also made me realize how difficult it is to a translate a book into a film and how budget constraints can really limit a director's vision. I feel sad that it didn't work out for Catherine to do New Moon because you can tell how much she loves Twilight and put everything she had into this movie.

Full of technical details, very cool!
By Lucy Cat
Let me preface my review with the following: this book is unlikely to appeal to the screaming tween Twilight fans. This is a book for those who are fans of the *film* and want to get an intimate look at what it was like to adapt a hugely famous novel into a cinematic masterpiece.

The book itself is beautifully put together. The pages are thick and glossy and filled with conceptual artwork and hand-written production notes by the director Catherine Hardwicke. There are set design notes, wardrobe notes and step-by-step breakdowns of the most involved scenes. Altogether, its packed with just over 150 pages of insider details. I have been a fan of Hardwicke's films since "Thirteen" and was quite impressed with her interpretation of "Twilight" the novel, which greatly influenced my decision to purchase this little companion.

For aspiring film-makers, producers, set designers and all-around film buffs who love Twilight, this little text is a gem. Combined with the hilarious commentary on the Twilight special edition DVDthere's no detail about the film-making process left undisclosed.

For those of you who are Twilight-crazy-for-Rob-Pattinson save a couple of bucks and stick to Twilight: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion which contains dozens of 8x11 glossy close-ups of Edward Cullen (and Bella).

Another ripoff
By internetjunkie495
Unfortunately I had to give this 1 star - it doesn't deserve that.

I saw this in the bookstores and am glad I didn't pre-order it. The book is no bigger than a postcard. $18.00 retail!?! It's not worth $10. For the price it should have been a poster book. This is just another way for Hardwicke to bleed more money out of Twilight fans. Definitely not worth the money.

Children who are ready for their first chapter books will enjoy reading about Arthur's adventures on his ball team. The story is written in a fast-paced style with a lot of dialogue, so most kids will zip through it in no time. The book's emphasis on teamwork and encouraging others just makes the story that much more worthwhile. Great for kids, regardless of whether they are Arthur fans.

In this, another great book by Marc Brown, children can learn vicariously through Arthur about money management, and specifically, how hard it is to earn money and how easily it is lost. These, ( the Arthur and D.W. Books), are great books, and more up to date than most children's books.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Multiple Hugo and Nebula winner Bear (City at the End of Time) sets this difficult but rewarding short novel on an interstellar colony ship gone astray. Teacher was supposed to be awakened just before landfall. What he finds when he gains some semblance of consciousness, however, is a dangerous and chaotic environment, with monsters roaming the ship's corridors and no one in charge. As he and a small band of equally ignorant crew members attempt to reach the gigantic ship's control center, they travel through a series of labyrinthine spaces, uncovering a variety of clues to the disaster that has destroyed large parts of the starship and damaged the controlling AIs. Not for those who prefer their space opera simpleminded, this beautifully written tale where nothing is as it seems will please readers with a well-developed sense of wonder. (Dec.)

From Booklist
Never one to play it safe in his consistently inventive fiction, Bear takes the reader for a harrowing ride on a labyrinthine starship in his latest hard-SF-oriented novel. Bear’s protagonist is an amnesiac starship crew member just released from a deep hibernation state called Dreamtime. Naked, disoriented, and forced by extreme temperature and gravity fluctuations to find safety somewhere among a confusing network of passageways, the man eventually receives help from an odd assortment of fellow Dreamtime refugees. Taking stock of their surroundings, while avoiding onboard killing machines, the gang quickly realizes the starship has given them each a unique role to play, including discovering collectively why the ship has been seriously damaged and cast aside from its mission to seek out habitable worlds. Bear’s pithy, occasionally cryptic writing style perfectly captures the chaotic experiences and unsettling revelations the team endures, while putting an intriguing spin on the timeworn SF theme of interstellar planet hunting. One of Bear’s most thought-provoking and well-crafted novels to date. --Carl Hays

Review
'Hull Zero Three is a lean, mean, supercharged sense-of-wonder engine.' -- Alastair Reynolds 'Hull Zero Three is a grand adventure of scientific discovery ... by turns chilling and touching, it poses challenging questions about what it means to be human.' -- Charlie Stross 'Greg Bear's voice is a resonant, clear chord of quality binding some of the best SF of the 20th Century to the short list of science-savvy, sophisticated, top-notch speculative fiction of the 21st. More than a grace note, Hull Zero Three is a compelling allegro in the growing symphony of Greg Bear's finest work.' -- Dan Simmons 'Not for those who prefer their space opera simple-minded, this beautifully written tale where nothing is as it seems will please readers with a well-developed sense of wonder.' PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY 'I loved Hull Zero Three ... this book reminds me of why I fell in love with science fiction in the first place. Searing questions of humanity, a good old fashioned riddle of a plot, and excellent conceptualization make Hull Zero Three more than worth the effort.' THE BOOK SMUGGLERS

Solid, intruiging genre sci-fi
By Dave Greenbaum
I was predisposed to liking this novel. I am a fan of the sci-fi tropes of the "big dumb object exploration" (see: "Rama" series) as well as the who multi-century interstellar exploration idea (too many to mention). "Hull Zero Three" is a combination of these themes, and starts out very fast, with a man awakened from a dreaming bliss and rudely injected into a freezing, semi-derelict giant starship, beset by confusion and danger at every turn, and basically trying to survive first, and figure out what is going on and what he is doing later.

The overall theme of "Hull Zero Three" may remind readers last year's (very underrated) film "Pandorum," but Bear, to his credit, writes with a bit more complexity and depth then what you might find in a movie. The themes of "Hull Zero Three" include some meditation on what it means to be human - genetically and morally, and whether we can overcome our genetic 'programming', as well as what humanity as a species may or may not be willing to do in order to survive.

Bear doesn't skimp on pure action, and while he avoids the standard "infodump" we do learn enough of the design and function of the inconceivably vast starship to really engage the reader's sense of wonder and awe. The book was not perfect - there were some scenes towards the middle where it dragged a bit, and the end seemed a bit too rushed and confusing. However, these are minor flaws. Overall, "Hull Zero Three" is one of 2010's better sci-fi offerings and showcases an author that is still near the top of his game.

Small amnesiac protagonist meets big dumb object
By S. Horwatt
Hull Zero Three is an uneven, uneasy marriage of the "amnesiac protagonist" plot (made popular mostly in mystery and suspense fiction, such as "The Bourne Identity") and the "explore the big dumb object" plot (made popular in science fiction, such as "Rendezvous with Rama," "Event Horizon," etc.). Unfortunately, the combination of these plots makes for a muddled read, since a character who doesn't know who or where he is wanders through something he can't adequately describe (because he's also forgotten a lot of words, so he really wouldn't be able to adequately describe his surroundings if he woke up somewhere really mundane) being threatened (or not...he's not really sure) by things he doesn't know the names of and again can't adequately describe.

It is pretty obvious from the outset that the character is on a generation ship and that things have gone HORRIBLY WRONG (as things always seem to do on generation ships...it's a wonder anyone builds them, really...don't those people read science fiction?). So the suspense really all revolves around what has gone wrong and will the characters be able to set it right. It's too bad that Bear chose such an annoying way to tell this story, because I thought the situation (when it is finally revealed very late in the novel) was actually pretty interesting and if he'd made the story about THAT instead of about an amnesiac character slowly making this discovery, it would have been a much better novel.

I worry about the effect of CGI-heavy sci-fi movies on science fiction writing
By Geoff Arnold
I really wanted to like this book. After all, the basic plot (character awakes in strange circumstances on a vast starship, and must undertake a long journey with many challenges in order to discover why) is a classic. I doubt that I'm the only reader of space fiction who has dreamed about such a quest, and even thought about writing it.... But I digress. Just because a story is based on a timeless theme doesn't mean it's no good, does it?

So the narrative arc is familiar, the characters equally so, the vaguely horrific quest works well, and the overall resolution is nicely judged. So why Do I give this book only three stars? Other reviewers have already identified the book's fatal weakness: the descriptions. Descriptions of characters and of monsters, both human and monstrous. Descriptions of the ship: its processes, systems, structures, spaces and spatial elements. Descriptions of the forces that act upon the characters, including sounds, accelerations, temperatures... The author insists on painting a detailed picture of every move, every event, every spin-up and chill-down, and then finds himself running out of adjectives. The result is often repetitive, and unfortunately flat.

As I said, I've read many science fiction stories in which the writers strove to describe huge alien forms and to hint at experiences beyond human ken. And generally they succeeded. I have a feeling that what's happening here is that the author has watched too many science fiction moves. When computer graphics can casually fill the screen with aliens, or a starship the size of a small planet, or an attack by thousands of robots, two things can happen to a writer. First, s/he may believe that anything less will not satisfy the reader, and s/he will strive to compete with the visual medium. Second, s/he may hope that the book can become the basis for a successful movie, and drifts into writing not a novel but a screenplay with detailed instructions to the special effects team.

How close does Greg Bear come to these tendencies - the Scylla and Charybdis of CGI envy? A bit too close for comfort, I'm afraid.

From Publishers Weekly
With the help of Santa, Opus, the slightly neurotic penguin star of two of Breathed's comic strips, finally gets to fly; PW said, "Breathed achieves just the right balance of sweetness and levity." All ages.

From Kirkus Reviews
The creator of the popular Bloom County comic strip takes up the well-worn theme of an animal who helps Santa. Opus is a penguin who longs to fly, but it's his swimming strength that makes him a hero after Santa's sleigh falls in a lake after the harness breaks. Reward: Santa's praise plus a ride aloft, borne by his friends the snow ducks. Nothing new here, but the story is told with competence and energy; the lavish mixed-media illustrations (airbrush smooth, cartoon style) have plenty of witty details. Opus is the best
By Eric Johnson
Berkeley Breathed has some of the most richly animated stories I've ever seen. I owned this book for a couple of years before I realized how great the illustrations in this book were. After working in a primary school library and reading various stories to the little kids, I realized that Breathed's books were far superior to most of the others. The detail and color present in this story takes a back seat to only the story itself. This is, perhaps, the best Christmas story I've read, and it's one that children really respond to. Who can't relate to feeling inferior to others and wanting to be different? Opus has this problem. He's a penguin who wants to fly. It's not until his unique talents are needed that his dreams of flying can come true.
The story has a great compliment of characters including: Bill the Cat, some snow ducks, and Ronald Ann. They all (in some way) try to help Opus, but the help comes from the least likely source. This is a great story that children will love to hear every year, and one that the parents will look forward to hearing every year. It's not trite and it's not purile. It's a good story with great pictures that should be in everyone's library.

Forgotten Treasure Rediscovered
By Wendy Bittel
My husband and I bought this book long ago- when it was just the two of us- before diapers, midnight wailings, etc. This Christmas our 4 and 5 year old found it sitting dustily on a shelf while making a secret and somewhat sneaky foray into mommy and daddy's bookcase. Imagine their surprise at finding a "kids book" among all those with just words. Opus has been read every night since. And the message of this wonderful story has not been lost. Although we've had to discuss why Opus is okay with not getting his own set of wings that work, I think the message of being happy with and making the most of the gifts you already have has been recorded somewhere in their little brains.

Anyway- Opus stands the test of time. If you grown ups have it tucked away somewhere gathering dust get this book out and share Opus with someone newer to this world. And have a Merry Christmas!

I get goosebumps...
By A Customer
everytime I read this story. This is my favorite Christmas story of all time. As a third grade teacher, I always save this book for the last day before vacation. When Opus flies through the water to save the day for Santa and his sleigh, I can see the wonderment in my students' eyes as they are hoping ( as I am) that he will make it. A happy ending that makes us laugh along with Opus and all his bowtied, feathered friends. I highly recommend this book for all ages- a feel good story!

The Complaints, by Ian Rankin

Nobody likes The Complaints--they're the cops who investigate other cops. It's a department known within the force as "The Dark Side," and it's where Malcolm Fox works. He's a serious man with a father in a nursing home and a sister who persists in an abusive relationship, frustrating problems about which he cannot seem to do anything.

Then the reluctant Fox is given a new case. There's a cop named Jamie Breck, and he's dirty. The problem is, no one can prove it. As Fox takes on the job, he learns that there's more to Breck than anyone thinks--dangerous knowledge, especially when a vicious murder takes place far too close to home.

In THE COMPLAINTS, Rankin proves again why he is one of the world's most beloved and bestselling crime writers, mixing unstoppable pacing with the deeper question of who decides right from wrong.

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of Rankin's Det. Insp. John Rebus will be disappointed by this so-so police procedural, his second stand-alone since Rebus "retired" (after Doors Open). Malcolm Fox—call him Rebus "Lite" (he doesn't drink, he broods less, and he has none of Rebus's wit)—works for the Scottish equivalent of Internal Affairs, "Complaints and Conduct" (aka "the Complaints"), which investigates corrupt cops. Fox looks into the case of Det. Sgt. Jamie Breck, who may be trading in child pornography over the Internet. Meanwhile, when Vince Faulkner, Fox's sister's lover and abuser, turns up dead, Fox becomes a murder suspect. A torturously complicated plot follows involving the suspicious suicide of a failing property developer, large-scale money laundering, and crookedness at every level of Scottish society, but nothing's really at stake. As always with Rankin, Scotland itself is a main character—"the whole of Scotland's in meltdown," says Fox—and that may be this tepid novel's main attraction. 10-city author tour. (Mar.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In the wake of Exit Music (2008), the concluding volume in his celebrated John Rebus series,Rankin has picked a most unlikely new hero. Edinburgh cop Malcolm Fox works for “the Complaints,” the despised internal-affairs division whose job it is to investigate other cops. Succeeding the Rebus novels, starring the quintessential maverick copper, with a series built around a cop-hunting cop seems akin to J. K. Rowling following Harry Potter with seven extra-thick novels about a classroom tattletale. And, yet, Rankin pulls it off, making Fox the fall guy in an elaborate police conspiracy and causing him to join forces with a detective under suspicion of peddling child porn. The strange-bedfellows angle drives the interpersonal dynamics here—and augurs well for future installments—as Fox, working off the books, investigates the murder of someone very close to home and attempts to turn the frame-up on its end. Some crime writers keep writing the same series with different characters, but Rankin deserves credit for going another way altogether. Fox is a good and quiet citizen compared to Rebus (he doesn’t drink and listens to birdsong on the radio, not classic rock), but Rankin doesn’t hold any of that against his new hero, proving that you can build complex, highly textured, series-worthy characters from the most unlikely of raw materials. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: A new series from the internationally best-selling Rankin is very big news in the mystery world, and his publisher will spread the word in every conceivable way—even including transit ads in New York and San Francisco. --Bill Ott

Review
"Rankin is a master at what, for me, is one of the important aspects of a crime novel: the integration of setting, plot, characters and a theme which, for Rankin, is the moral dimension never far from his writing. . . . Fox is so fully realised and interesting a character, his job in "the complaints" so fraught with fascinating possibilities, that we can surely hope to meet him again."―P.D. James, The Guardian

"With its Edinburgh setting, suave crime lords and renegade officers, The Complaints will be familiar territory to Rebus fans -- even if its hero isn't. Getting to know this man, an intriguing mix of apathy and action, is almost like a courtship--each new situation reveals something that makes the reader want to know yet more."
―Rebecca Armstrong, The Independent

"Rankin delivers . . . an excellent cop novel full of action, good dialogue, well-crafted characters and an authentic backdrop."
―Marcel Berlins, The Times

Who Decides Right From Wrong?
By prisrob
Oh, Rebus we miss you! Ian Rankin retired Rebus, and now he has given us Inspector Malcolm Fox. Fox is a reformed drinker, teetotaller, and much like Rebus, in that he is honest and fights for the rights of the innocent. The 'drink' is what separates these men, and it goes to show us how much of a problem alcohol can be.

Inspector Fox works in the 'Complaints and Conduct' department in Edinburgh. The difference is that this is the time of great economical distress. Things are falling apart and crime is rising. 'The Complaints' as Fox's department is known deals with racism and corruption in the police department. He is not well liked by his colleagues because his business is investigating them. Much is hush hush, and Fox has just come off a big case that implicates a well known officer. Now, he is asked to help investigate an officer who may be implicated as a pedophile. The problem is this man, Jamie Breck, is also investigating a death that is close to Fox's sister. How complicated can this get, very! Fox is asked to get close to Breck to find out as much as he can. What Fox does discover is that there isn't much and what he does uncover leads to more complications and implications. The high and the mighty might fall and they cannot allow Fox to reveal their secrets.

Ian Rankin is one of those authors who is the epitome of the crime writing genre. This novel covers 18 days in 2009. Days full of adventure, violence and mystery. The fact that Rankin can build such a lot and develop these characters to their utmost is surprising. This is one of those books that is difficult to put down. And, as much as I wanted to know how Fox solves his dilemmas, I did not want the book to end. Oh, woe is me- will Inspector Fox return?

Highly Recommended. prisrob 07-29-10

A tightly woven novel with a new hero from Ian Rankin
By Bookreporter
Ian Rankin is best known for his Detective John Rebus police procedurals. When several years ago he decided to retire his alcoholic, curmudgeonly loner of a superb cop, fans were up in arms. How and with whom could Rankin replace this loveable/unlovable anti-hero? But as time went on and Rankin offered a couple of stand-alone novels, he finally found a new hero: Malcolm "Foxy" Fox.

Foxy never thought of himself as a fox. `"A bear of a man'...was the way one of his previous bosses had described him. Slow but steady, and only occasionally to be feared.'" He worked at Lothian and Borders Police HQ in the Conduct and Corrections department. In the United States they are referred to as Internal Affairs. Whether in Scotland or America, their colleagues do not trust this group of cops; they are hated for being snoops and thought of as turncoats ratting on their own.

Foxy has a lot to deal with. First and foremost is maintaining his five-year feat of beating his alcoholism. He never gives in, no matter how strong the yearning. He lives alone and cannot forgive himself for hitting his wife before she walked out. His instincts are sharp and he's very intuitive. Also on his plate is his father, who is in a nursing home he pays for, and a depressed alcoholic sister whose partner, Vince Faulkner, is a batterer he can't get her to leave. Then one night the guy doesn't come home. He's been murdered, and the complex plot moves into high gear.

Faulkner was a construction worker on a site that lost its funding and was palling around with known hoodlums. He was found bludgeoned to death and stabbed on one of the deserted building sites. While it really isn't Foxy's job to solve this crime, he can't help but hear things and put the bits together, which lead to cops involved in underhanded dealings. That's where he must work to solve the disparate crimes and find criminals, even if they lead to cops he knows. Foxy starts an investigation of his own and soon finds himself on suspension. This doesn't stop him.

As a matter of fact, Child Protection, Child Exploitation and Online Protection, another unit buried deep within the corrections, targets another policeman. They are thought of as "the Chop Shop" or "the dark side," which is run by a woman who Foxy has a passing, friendly romantic interlude. But when he finds out how she betrayed him, he dismisses her. The target of her investigation is Detective Jamie Breck. They think he's involved in a child pornography ring located in Australia. Ironically he's teamed up with Foxy, whose mission is to investigate him. But he and Breck like each other and become a team operating on their own. He, too, is put on suspension, so the two men spend a lot of time together.

Ian Rankin is a master at plots and characters. THE COMPLAINTS is a complex and challenging book with a strong storyline. The plot races and tension rises, and readers are lured into that wonderful place where they just can't wait to turn the page. Foxy is a strong character who is well-honed and can carry a series, which seems to be Rankin's plan. Fans will miss Rebus, but they are getting a hero who has some of Rebus's good traits and little of his bad ones. In an interview, Rankin said, "Malcolm Fox is the antithesis of Rebus."

THE COMPLAINTS is a tightly woven story of good vs. evil but with a glance at the brighter side of life, too. Rankin fans will find themselves entertained and eager for book two of the series. In that same interview, Rankin said, "There's more of his ego and subconscious to be explored. And I like him as a character and a human being, so I can envisage one more book with him, but not 17." There you have it: at least one more book and then even Rankin is not sure.

After Reviews Almost Gave This One A Miss...So Glad I Didn't !!
By Under the Radar
After reading the other reviews on this novel, I was not sure if I wanted to take a chance on it. Now, I feel silly for doubting Mr.Rankin's gourgeous book.

Many other reviewers have outlined the plot beautifully. Malcom Fox works for the Complaints and Conduct Department (ie. Internal Affairs) and is given the task of investigating a cop suspected of being dirty. Then a murder takes place very close to home and the plot heats up.

Malcom is a fascinating character with an elderly parent to care for, a sibing in an abusive relationship and a daily committment to fighting alcoholism. The entire cast of characters is nicely drawn out and developed.

Some reviews commented that the plot was complex. I did not feel this was a negative thing. It's true that there were many tentacles, but all plot points were resolved nicely and did not seem contrived. In an age of so much 'fast-food' entertainment, I found it nice to have a bit of a plot to chew on and keep straight.

I think too, that long-time Rankin readers have to approach the novel without "Rebus Goggles". If you do not compare Malcom Fox to previous characters or plot points to previous novels...you really enjoy the book and it's new concepts and metaphors with a fresh mind :)

Life as a parent never ends.
By Lori Caswell/Dollycas
Ginny and William Owens have grown comfortable in their "empty nest". Their youngest child moved out 5 years ago. They enjoy their quiet times, Ginny volunteering at church, William reading his newspapers and working in the gardens. A nice relaxing life.

Then their daughter Lillian arrives for an unexpected "visit" with newborn baby Phillip and 3-year old Olivia in tow. Husband Tom is "home, buried in work."

Then a few days later Stephen arrives with his pregnant wife Jane for a short weekend visit. Stephen is going to be the stay-at-home Dad when the baby arrives and Jane will return to her high pressure, high paying job just 3 short weeks after the baby is born.

Daughter Rachel is not far behind, her life is crashing around her both financially and emotionally as her boyfriend leaves her. She needs some time at home to sort things out.

Ginny and William's empty nest is soon overflowing with family and their entire summer will be disrupted as their children are all facing very difficult issues. The days of a kiss, a hug, and a band-aid are long over. They have put the parenthood hats back on the help their children as only parents can.

I LIKED IT!!!!

Life as a parent never ends, whether your kids are 2 or 62, until of course the parent is no longer alive. Part of being a parent is to always be there for your children, no matter what they are facing.

This is a wonderful debut novel depicting modern family life and problems, bringing a family together to cope, learning responsibility and forgiveness and how to survive life today in this fast-paced world.

I must say William and Ginny showed so much patience as their home was overtaken by their children but I can say that is what parents do today. A lot of children are living at home longer or moving home just because with this economy they can't make it on their own. It doesn't even have to be the problems this family faced. It is hard for young people to make it on their own today and a lot of them stay longer than a summer.

This story was nicely paced, the characters were very relate-able, and I really liked the dialogue between all the characters, very well written. The story is interspersed with humor and wit that makes the story even more real and enjoyable.

This would be a great summer beach read. Another perfect "escape" story.

The greatest event in the world is the arrival of grandchildren.
By michael a. draper
Meg Mitchell Moore's debut novel offers the reader a good study of a family with complicated needs.

Life in Burlington, Vermont seemed peaceful to retirees William and Ginny Owen. Then, their eldest daughter, Lillian, informs them that she and her two children, ages three and newborn, are coming to their home and that she needs some time away from her husband.

She doesn't admit that her husband had just slept with his assistant at a company function.

Overnight the sereen life at home became chaotic and complicated. Even more so when the Owen's son Stephen and his wife Jane arrive without warning. Jane is seven months pregnant and both Stephen and Jane need a change of pace from their home in New York.

Once again, the family shows resilience but a situation develops and the couple's intended weekend stay must be extended.

The family seems to accept the problems that are handed out but it is a definate challenge to the idea of life that the retirees thought was their due, even when their youngest child calls for help.

The Owen's family's personal journey through the turbulent time is well described with humor and empathy with each child needing nourishment from their parents in different ways.

William and Ginny realize that being parents bears responsibility that continues after the children leave home. The fact that the children have a safe place to go to when things are not going well is a lesson for all parents.

The characters and the setting is well described and the novel basks with fine literary flavor. The chaos was a bit long for me but the novel was enlightening and enjoyable.

Wonderfully authentic story about family and relationships!
By Karen Mascott
The Arrivals is one of those books that you can't put down -- you turn the page eager to see what happens next; at the same time, you never want it to end. I fell in love with this family, and with each character -- each rich with personality and authenticity. Moore's dialogue is sharp and insightful, vividly capturing the dynamics of modern family relationships.

This book is one of the best family stories I've ever read!
