ANOTHER WONDERFUL WORK BY TODD PARR. This is one of the better new book releases this year.
By D. Blankenship
Over the past several years I have run across, and indeed read to children, quite a number of books by Todd Parr. I am not sure how many there have been but I do know that I have yet to find one that did not completely delight me. I have never had a kid complain about them either. This work; "The I'm Not Scared Book," is no exception. This author, who is also the artist, can do more with simply shapes and a limited number of colors than I have ever seen before. Also, as with his other books, his sensitivity and ability to address problems and concerns of the sort of things that children often need help with is most insightful, informative and helpful. It is as if Parr remembers absolutely what it was like to be a small child.

In this particular work, the author has addressed common fears that all young people face from time to time...from the real and relatively important, to those that may seem trifle to we adults, but are very paramount in a child's mind. The book is designed so that on one page a fear is voiced, and on the opposite page the solution to that fear or what makes that fear go away is noted and discussed.

"Sometimes I'm scared when my family argues."

"I'm not scared when we hug and say I'm Sorry."

Or...

"Sometimes I'm scared of what's under my bed." (Hmmm, I am a bit fearful of that myself at times.)

"I'm not scared once I clean everything out and see all my favorite toys."

The last page of the book makes a statement: "Sometimes we are scared of things because we don't understand them." This, when you think about it, is more or less the sum of most fears.

And then there is the art work! My goodness! Large bold pictures, all outlined in black with bright bold colors that simply snap from the page and catch the reader's eye. These are not at first glance complicated pictures but each makes a statement conveying the thought of the artist/writer perfectly. I like these illustrations because they are of the nature that a small child can attempt to recreate them and not feel intimidated or discouraged. In addition to a nice story with a nice life lesson, you are actually, if you work it right, getting a very nice art lesson for the little ones thrown in. If you watch a group of children closely over a period of time, you will not quite often that they will attempt to recreate pictures and characters from the books they read. This is one of the ways they learn to create art...hey, it's a starting point!

When reading this story to or with the wee ones, it gives ample room for the adult to investigate just what it is that a particular child or group of children are afraid of and address those issues right then and there. All in all this is a very valuable teaching tool.

The book itself is well designed and as with all books this company produces, is stout enough to take a pretty good beating and make it through it. The cover is heavy and the stars you see in the cover picture have been cut out...like as in you can put your finger through them.

There is no doubt that Mr. Parr has another winner for us here.

Another great Todd Parr book!
By PAM
This book goes beyond the other "fear/being afraid' books that are out there. The fear is stated and the next page shows a non-scary similar situation. Almost like a Scary/Not Scary format. It helps kids see solutions and promotes thinking skills. There are several themes this could be used for: going to school, Halloween, underwear....I will definitely use this book in my preschool classroom!

Review from Books That Heal Kids
By Books That Heal Kids
Huge Todd Parr fan over here! He helps us not take it all so seriously. The kids go ga ga over the illustrations and his humorous lines he sneaks in. Like this one....Sometimes I'm scared to go shopping for new underwear. I'm not scared when I wear them on my head. How funny and random is that?! Of course the kids laugh and laugh. If I'm going to tackle a feeling like being scared it's nice to be able to pull a Todd Parr book of my shelf. I like how each scared statement he writes has a positive solution accompanying it. Be prepared to have your kids ask you to read this one over and over. Ask them to come up with a scared feeling, but don't forget to have them also add in the positive solution to the fear. Good stuff!

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Urban fantasist Seanan McGuire (Rosemary and Rue) picks up a new pen name for this gripping, thrilling, and brutal depiction of a postapocalyptic 2039. Twin bloggers Georgia and Shaun Mason and their colleague Buffy are thrilled when Sen. Peter Ryman, the first presidential candidate to come of age since social media saved the world from a virus that reanimates the dead, invites them to cover his campaign. Then an event is attacked by zombies, and Ryman's daughter is killed. As the bloggers wield the newfound power of new media, they tangle with the CDC, a scheming vice presidential candidate, and mysterious conspirators who want more than the Oval Office. Shunning misogynistic horror tropes in favor of genuine drama and pure creepiness, McGuire has crafted a masterpiece of suspense with engaging, appealing characters who conduct a soul-shredding examination of what's true and what's reported. From Bookmarks Magazine
While the past few years have seen no shortage of new takes on the zombie genre, critics thought that Feed broke away from the shuffling horde. They appreciated the care Grant took in building a detailed world, noting how she infused originality into genre elements like the vaccine gone bad. Some reviewers criticized this extensive exposition, and while none of them were ever bored by the world Grant describes, they questioned whether it was realistic for her characters to have such excellent recall of the apocalypse. Nevertheless, critics recommended Feed as a title that should entertain even those who are not normally fans of the SF or horror genre. Stay tuned for the second in the Newsflesh series, Blackout.

Review
"Astonishing ... a fascinating exploration of the future."―New York Times

"While there's plenty of zombie mayhem, political snark, and pointedly funny observations here, the heart of this book is about human relationships, which are still the most important thing in the world...even in a world where you might have to shoot the person you love most in the head, just to stop them from biting off your face."―Locus on Feed

"Feed is a proper thriller with zombies. Grant doesn't get carried away with describing her world or the virus. She's clearly thought both out brilliantly, but she doesn't let it get in the way of a taut, well-written story."―SFX on Feed

"The story starts with a bang as corruption, mystery, danger and excitement abound."―RT Book Reviews (4.5 stars) on Feed

"Gripping, thrilling, and brutal... Shunning misogynistic horror tropes in favor of genuine drama and pure creepiness, McGuire has crafted a masterpiece of suspense with engaging, appealing characters who conduct a soul-shredding examination of what's true and what's reported."―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) on Feed

"Intelligent and intense, a thinking-person's post-apocalyptic zombie thriller set in a fully-realized future that is both fascinating and horrifying to behold."―John Joseph Adams on Feed

"I can't wait for the next book."―N.K. Jemisin on Feed

Wow
By Kristie Hunter
I have a book club for zombie apocalypse enthusiasts on Facebook and some members recommended this author. I am so glad they did. It is an awesome read. I read it till l fell asleep at night, cursing the need for sleep. I read on my lunch break, cursing the need for a job. It kept me interested, intrigued, nervous, happy and sad. It also had some thought provoking essays on the state of the world today, even though it's set in the future. I enjoyed starting a series about zombies, that had rebuilt society and the zombies were really a small part of the intrigue. Highly recommend this series

The book is well written and suspenseful, and leaves on a great cliffhanger to make you desire the third book.

The "filler" stories never feel dull, and the art only gets better
By Amme Hsuor
When it comes to this series, it is my absolute favorite. Besides being a little dark at times- especially in the anime- the manga has done extremely well for my opinion. This volume feels like a bit of a filler, as it were, being entirely about the Curry Festival, Agni, Prince Soma and their issue with his caretaker Mina. The entire thing was very entertaining though. May I also mention that it's also educational, pertaining to a bit of English and Indian history, and the cuisine of both.

All in all the art gets even better by volume, and I find this to be a series I go to for any reason when I'd like a good manga to read. Definitely recommend it!

Unspeakable horrors threaten the earth in this fantastic new comic fantasy from the author of Divine Misfortune.

Diana's life was in a rut - she hated her job, she was perpetually single, and she needed a place to live. But then the perfect apartment came along. It seemed too good to be true - because it was.

The apartment was already inhabited - by monsters. Vom the Hungering was the first to greet Diana and to warn her that his sole purpose in life was to eat everything in his path. This poses a problem for Diana since she's in his path...and is forbidden from ever leaving the apartment.

It turns out though that there are older and more ancient monstrous entities afoot - ones who want to devour the moon and destroy the world as we know it. Can Diana, Vom, and the other horrors stop this from happening? Maybe if they can get Vom to stop eating everything...and everyone.

From Publishers Weekly
A talking closet and a landlord who's "a bit of a nut" herald the beginning of the end of human civilization in Martinez's lighthearted tale. When Diana moves into apartment 5, she accidentally becomes the caretaker of monstrous, ancient Vom the Hungering. It doesn't seem all bad at first: the fridge is never empty, and she meets interesting neighbors. But she also acquires the startling ability to straddle "multiple floors of reality" and see that the world is suddenly full of bizarre creatures and their squabbling cliques: "It's like high school, except instead of jocks versus nerds, it's the things who eat civilizations versus things who eat galaxies." When Diana learns that Calvin, one of her monstrous new buddies, is planning to destroy the world, she must persuade her other bizarre friends to help head him off. Martinez (Divine Misfortune) excels at off-the-wall storytelling that perfectly suits this cheerful apocalyptic fantasy. (June)

Not His best book but still worth the money
By William Palaico
I'm a huge fan of the author's work, that being said I don't think this is his best work. I found it a bit boring in places and had to keep myself from skipping whole paragraphs to get to something more interesting. There is a lot a lot of good stuff in here as well though, I always enjoy his characters, written very well. I would recommend this book even though it's not his best its better than most.

Not his best work
By S.M.
I liked it enough that I dont regret buying it, but its definitely not his best work. Overall, the story felt like it lacked...importance? Like there wasnt alot of urgency, and the stuff that happened didnt matter much. There wasnt even a real antagonist. It was also kinda short. Over all, I would rate it above "a nameless witch" since it was an easy read, but thats about it.

A. Lee Goes Neptunian
By S. Holm
I enjoyed this book. I read sections of this book outloud because I loved the way the words sounded. Everything written here is strange, weird, and in some ways, so wonderful that I immediately recommended it to everybody I could think of. Will this book be for everybody? No. If you lack vision, if you have zero sense of humor, and your imagination is as undeveloped as a blob of mucus, you won't get it and might even think that you need to be stoned to enjoy this book. NO! Buy this book and while completely untouched by any mind-altering substance, read it. Play with it. Take it for a walk with you. Call someone you actually like and read portions of it to them. This book is clearly as A. Lee Martinez as they come; the reason I buy books written by this author is for the times when he hits a home run with something that challenges the ego and the known. This is another A. Lee Martinez home run.

The Way Out: A True Story of Ruin and Survival, by Craig Childs

- A breakout book from a writer increasingly celebrated as the 21st-century bard of the American Southwest--a writer in the tradition of Barry Lopez, Peter Matthiessen, Terry Tempest Williams, among others. - In March 2003, Craig Childs received the Spirit of the West Literary Achievement Award, given to a writer whose body of work captures the unique spirit of the American West. - As a chronicle of adventure, as emotionally charged human drama, as confessional memoir, The Way Out is a transcendent book, a work destined to earn a lasting place in the literature of extremes. - Not since John Krakauer's bestselling Into the Wild has a book so compellingly explored the boundary between wilderness adventure and madness.

Take stock of what has happened along your own walk!
By Armchair Interviews
Where most people go to resorts or on a cruise for time away from their everyday lives, Craig Childs and his close friend and traveling companion Dirk Vaughn walk the desolate deserts, canyons and chasms of the American West.

The Way Out describes Childs' walk through a forgotten and imposing fracture in the crust of the earth rarely if ever seen by white people. The indigenous tribes through millennia have passed this way, but until Childs and Vaughn receive permission from an elder Dine shepherd, no one has walked this route in recent times.

Childs' style of writing is metaphorical. It engages you and makes one understand the element he is traveling like no other author I have read. It flows like prose from the early days of the last century when authors painted their stories with words.

In the short period of time that the two men spend in their search through this chasm, they reflect on the lives they have led that have brought them to this adventure. Childs' life is one of dark memories that would have pushed those without his outlook upon life to the depths of depression. In his compatriot Vaughn, we meet a man that has seen the distasteful underbelly of big city crime in his days as a police officer.

Yet neither man allows those past experiences to dampen their spirit in their quest to explore the forgotten realm in which they have intentionally placed themselves.

I must admit, I almost put this book down. But as I forged forward I began to understand the author's style and what he was trying to communicate.

Armchair Interviews says: The Way Out will make you take solitary stock of what has happened along your own walk through life.

A gem. Childs delivers another masterpiece.
By James E. Schwartzman
I loved this book, which is a feast for the soul. The novel profiles an inner and outer journey of two men through the most intense environment. Beyond the physical endurance required to pass this route, the 2 men reflect on their past struggles with society, family and personal demons.

It's another incredible book by Childs, and I think marks a change in his writing style. Rather than a collection of journeys, this is a single story which becomes a legend or tale.

Read this book. It reaches into the soul of men, in a way few contemporary stories can.

Good But Incomplete
By William R. Drake
I really liked Craig Childs' House of Rain, partly because it offered interesting observations and reflections on the Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloans), a culture I have studied a great deal, and partly because of the author's skill at descriptive writing. That book left me wanting to know about the writer, an unusual person who spends weeks at a time walking across the southwest, even in the middle of winter. Hence, I was drawn to read The Way Out, which, in part, is a reflection on Childs' relationship with his father.

In The Way Out, Childs' memories of his father, and the stories of Dirk Vaughn's former life as a cop, which were woven in and out of the tale of their hiking expedition, were interesting. Both of the companions had tortured pasts that, in a way, were mirrored in the torturous piece of nature they had to navigate. But I did not see much of a parallel between the "The Way Out" of their physical trek and "the way out" of their past experiences related to a "disturbed, raging, alcoholic father" and the very difficult, violent, and painful, life of a police officer. (Perhaps the book's title was not supposed to apply to their life stories, which were such a prominent part of the reader's experience???) Dirk's "way out" of his past was to retire from police work (after a horrific car accident that caused a death prompted him to quit) and become involved in the rugged outdoors, which does not really relate well to the book's title. As for Childs' past related to his father, I now have pictures of the father from Childs' eyes, and pictures of some of Childs' experiences with him, but I have no idea how those experiences affected Childs' or how (or if) he found a "way out" of his father-son relationship. Or a "way through?" Or a learning to live with whatever residue remains within him from his relationship with his father?

Just reading stories related to his dad was not enough for me. Where did Craig Childs go with those experiences? What did he do with them? How did they shape him? How do they drive him? How do they relate to his need to take on treks in nature (such as the one the book describes) that few people would have the desire or ability to undertake? How is he like his father? How is he different? Other than being torturous, how did his father-son experiences relate to the physical journey the book describes?

Childs is a very gifted writer, and, for the most part I enjoyed his book. But by the end I was tired of each little observation or experience being molded by the powers of the intellect into a creative metaphor. Some descriptions were too contrived for me, and I felt like I was wading through molasses to get to the end. I would have liked less creativity!

Disclaimer: i'm an utter Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) fan, so i'm a bit biased.

Anyways, LOVE THIS SERIES!!! LOVE THE ART!!! LOVE THE CHARACTERS!!!!!KKYAAA!!!! this is the first volume that the front cover isn't a pic of Sebastian but of Ciel instead. I'm not complaining. this is a nice change~. Content-wise, it's the beginning of the Circus Arc!!!!!! my fave arc so far in this series cuz i've read all the japanese translations online that's been out so far, but I love this series so much i'm collecting all the manga anyways! The circus arc is BEAUTIFUL the outfits are so intricate and stylish, the makeup is amazing, and the borders and such drawn for embellishment go so well with the art~. Also this shows Ciel's more clumsy side.

Unfortunately, if you're looking for more main plot, this volume might disappoint, however with all the jokes and hidden character development for Ciel, I say it's well worth it. People need to look carefully and analyze why Ciel does what he does and makes certain decisions since that's who he is.

Ahem, not to mention, SEBASTIAN IS HAWT AS ALWAYS~~~!!!!!!

The New York Times bestseller is now a major motion picture!

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper may not be the prettiest girl in her high school, but she has a loyal group of friends, a biting wit, and a spot-on BS detector. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush, who calls Bianca the Duff--the designated ugly fat friend--of her crew.

But things aren't so great at home and Bianca, desperate for a distraction, ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up–Bianca Piper, 17, is smart, outspoken, and loyal to her two beautiful friends. She is also convinced that she is unattractive, an opinion confirmed when school hottie and “man-whore” Wesley Rush calls her a “Duff” (designated ugly fat friend). Bianca responds by throwing her Cherry Coke in his face, but when her mother decides to divorce her father, who then lapses into drinking again, she becomes involved in a secretive sexual relationship with Wesley to take her mind off her problems. Bianca finds that as their love/hate relationship continues, she is falling in love with him. Not surprisingly, Wesley, who has family problems of his own, reciprocates and announces that, although he doesn't chase girls, he is chasing her. Eventually, everything comes to a satisfying but predictable conclusion. This debut novel is a fun read and surprisingly feminist in a number of ways. Keplinger makes good points about female body image and female friendship, and discusses how both men and women use offensive terms about women as a means of social control. Bianca and the other female characters are more believable and realistic than Wesley, who is straight out of female romantic fantasyland. It is a little difficult to understand why Bianca would get involved with him after he insults her, but in their romantic scenes, there is some seriously hot chemistry. These teens are realistically and openly sexual, and there are frequent discussions of such matters as birth control and STDs, as well as a few F-bombs. Older girls, including reluctant readers, will love this one.–Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJα(c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist
Duff stands for “designated ugly fat friend.” And while 17-year-old Bianca isn’t that fat or ugly, that’s what Wesley calls her as he tries to hook up with her more desirable gal pals. But Bianca has a surprise for him when she kisses him in response. Then, as her life gets more complicated (parents divorcing, father back on the bottle), she finds it easy to drown her own sorrows in their hot, no-strings-attached sex. There are subtle strings, however, especially as Bianca and Wesley find they are not quite what the other supposed. Lots of language, plenty of sex (well, instances, if not images), and contemporary references make this feel of the moment. But the underlying worry about one’s place in the sun is eternal. Teens will relate, even though the problems, especially at home, seem a retread and the characterizations are on the thin side. What’s best here is Bianca’s brazen voice. Even when confused, she is truer to herself than most. Grades 9-12. --Ilene Cooper

Review
Praise for The DUFF:A New York Times BestsellerA USA Today bestseller
"[A] well-written, irreverent, and heartfelt debut."―Publishers Weekly

"A complex, enemies-with-benefits relationship that the YA market has never seen before... Keplinger scores a first for a genre in which vampires and dystopian futures rule. Her snarky teen speak, true-to-life characterizations and rollicking sense of humor never cease in her debut."―Kirkus

"Kudos to the 18-year-old Keplinger for writing a heroine whose complicated relationship with sex is honest and heartbreaking. This for-more-mature teens novel deftly illustrates how even consensual sex can be emotionally destructive, and captures thoughts about self-image and the many different types of relationships. Expect to be recommending THE DUFF to friends for years to come."―Romantic Times

An unexpected favorite!
By Sara
I'll admit that I didn't want to read The DUFF. Not one little bit. I kept hearing people talk about it and how excited they were and I just wanted to run in the opposite direction. The fact of the matter was, I didn't want to read a book about a "designated ugly fat friend," not when I felt like one myself. I suppose you could say that I was a bit afraid of Kody Keplinger's debut novel. I can now say that I would have been kicking myself forever if I hadn't given this novel a chance. Before I'd even finished reading, I realized that The DUFF is one the best contemporary YA novels I've ever read and that I may never be able to get it out of my head.

There were so many aspects of this novel that touched me emotionally. It feels cheesy to say that The DUFF inspired me, but there really is no other way to put it. As far back as elementary school, I've felt like the DUFF. Of course, I knew that my friends, who I think are gorgeous, intelligent girls, didn't like things about themselves, but, for the most part, I dismissed their complaints and insecurities. In my mind, they had nothing to complain about... at least not compared to me. I knew that my insecurities were magnified by my negative body image and self-esteem issues, but I could never truly bring myself to turn this self-destructive behavior around. Somehow, Keplinger's words and Bianca's story finally allowed me do this. For years, I've been putting myself down by comparing myself to my friends, when, in reality, we have all have flaws and characteristics that make us amazing and unique. Seeing how Bianca puts herself down, when the reader can clearly see that she's an amazing, vibrant person with so much to offer, really drove this truth about myself home. I truly believe that every girl, and many boys. have felt like or will feel like the DUFF at some point in their lives, and I applaud Kody Keplinger for having the guts - and the wisdom - to write Bianca's story because it's a story everyone can relate to.

I was surprised, but unbelievably happy to find that Keplinger tackles teen sex in The DUFF. Her treatment of the controversial topic is honest and, in my opinion, perfectly done. I can sincerely say that I have never read a sex scene in a YA novel that I believed as much as those found in The DUFF. I didn't feel that Keplinger condoned or discouraged teen sex, she merely presented a realistic portrayal, and, for that, I'm extremely grateful. I have no problem with sex in YA, but I firmly believe that if it's going to be incorporated, it must be done with tact. In my mind, Keplinger has written successfully what many seasoned writers cannot.

It was the romantic plot line that finally convinced me to pick up The DUFF. I can never resist a good love story and Keplinger did a phenomenal job. I find that I like my main character and her romantic interest to bicker and fight and sometimes flat our hate one another before they realize that, against all odds, that hate may have transformed into love - with some passion in between. I'm a huge fan of tension and denial and grand gestures and Keplinger's romance left me sighing happily. I'm especially impressed by the author's ability to nearly make me hate Wesley as much as Bianca does (at the beginning of the novel) and still have me completely in love with him by the end. I was terrified that he was just as bad as Bianca thought he was. And, in ways, I suppose he was. He was definitely flawed, he is, after all, a teenage boy, but he has so many wonderful qualities as well. Bianca and Wesley's romance is will forever be one of my favorites.

I'll definitely be buying myself a copy of The DUFF. And I'll definitely be recommending [forcing] my sisters and friends to read it as well. I'm in awe of this remarkable debut novel and I urge each and every one of you to read it, especially if you can say that you've ever felt like the a DUFF.

Hilariously Snarky, But With a Great Message Too - A Debut Not To Be Missed
By Nikki (Wicked Awesome Books)
Every girl in the history of the world has, at one point or another, felt like the DUFF - the designated ugly fat friend; That one girl in a group of friends who feels like she just doesn't compare to the rest. That is exactly how 17 year old Bianca Piper feels and as her home life comes crashing down, she needs an escape, a way to forget about all the bad things happening to her. Wesley Rush - womanizing, jackass Wesley Rush - becomes that escape.

Kody Keplinger has perfectly captured the insecurities that all women have. Her writing is witty, sarcastic, hilariously funny, and perfectly executed. Bianca is easy to relate to and I could even understand her situation and why she keeps going back to Wesley. And Wesley - he's a jackass, but he's a funny jackass. His cockiness and the banter that goes on between him and Bianca is a blast to read. Then, there's Bianca's best friends: Jess and Casey are wonderful, Casey especially. They are the best friends that every girl wants and should have. I loved them both.

This book is everything I'd hoped for and then some. Bianca is intelligent, strong, fierce in that `I'll give you a verbal beatdown' kind of way, yet she is wholly and entirely flawed. She has sex, repeatedly, with a guy who called her a Duff - with someone who tears her down all the time with a degrading nickname. All the time she spends with Wesley makes her open up to him, and him to her. The two aren't really that different from one another and maybe, just maybe there could be some feelings other than hatred and lust there.

Aside from Bianca's complicated and illicit after school activities, she has to cope with a mother who abandoned her and a father that seriously cannot cope. After 18 years of sobriety, a sudden divorce sends her father on a downward spiral and sooner or later, Bianca's dysfunctional home life and her dysfunctional relationship begin to crash together. The ending is somewhat predictable, but getting there is the best part.

The Duff is a snarky and heartfelt novel that delves into issues of insecurities, self-esteem, and casual sex, but does it without overwhelming the reader. Innuendos line the pages, but the story is heartfelt and real. Bianca could be me, she could be you, she could be any girl in the world and that's what makes this story truly shine.

Opening line: This was getting old.
Once again, Casey and Jessica were making complete fools of themselves, shaking their asses like dancers in a rap video. ~ pg. 1

Favorite line: "No matter where you go or what you do to distract yourself, reality catches up with you eventually." ~ pg. 126-126

Icky heroine
By booklass
Bianca is supposed to be smart and sassy, a tough girl who protects herself with her mouth so no one can see how vulnerable she really is. That is how the author seemed to start the book, anyway. However, Bianca quickly morphs into one of the most unlikeable, unsympathetic heroines I've come across in a while. Her friends are saints for even keeping her in their vicinity. Bianca is a foul mouthed, crabby user of other people, and she never really redeems herself. She never comes to any real epiphany about her own true ugliness inside. The author tells the reader that Bianca is beginning to see her "neuroses" and faults, but this means nothing because the character's behavior shows the opposite of someone who has come to any sort of enlightenment.
A huge issue is the author's treatment of abuse. When Bianca is the victim, the author makes it pretty clear that it is wrong. However, when Bianca is dishing it out, the author treats it as kittenish behavior. In the last pages when Bianca tells the guy she ends up liking that she will hit him and throw things at him because that is just "who she is", I thought "So, she's an abuser, but it's okay because she's a girl??? And the author thinks this is, what, cute?" The treatment of abuse seemed like a double standard that I REALLY would not want a young adult to bond with. Also, as has been mentioned by others, there was the issue of the angry sex. The novel provides way too much detail and not just for a YA book, and the sex has an abusive quality that is only partially addressed.
Because the main character of Bianca is who the novel is really about, and because she is so distasteful to me as a main character, I cannot give the book more than one star. I just didn't like it.

Cap Wadell loves football, but it seems unlikely that he'll ever get to play on a real team-his hometown is so small that there aren't enough boys in his school to fill a regulation squad. Then his grandfather tells him how he solved that same problem years before: He and his schoolmates started a six-man football league. If Cap wants to do the same thing, Grandpa will be happy to help. He'll even coach the team if the league gets off the ground. It does, and soon Cap and his friends are learning the rules of six-man football. Cap is in competition for the starting quarterback spot with Jimmy Cash, but that's not a problem. What is a problem is that Grandpa and Jimmy's grandfather have reignited an old football feud. When their rivalry starts to affect the team, Cap wonders if the team will survive. Great Sport Story for Kids
By Marvin P. Ferguson
This is an excellent story about a start up football team in a small town, and naturally along the way there are problems to deal with, but nothing is impossible. My own baseball story is a start up team with a retired janitor, similar to a grandfather in this story, coaching a bunch of average kids, so I know how exciting "The Long Arm Quarterback" can be. And I like grassroots stories that originate in a small town.
This book is easy, fun, and exciting to read. It will hold the attention of any kid for many hours to come, I strongly recommend it for any kid who loves to read, I give it five stars, and I'm Marvin P. Ferguson, author of Boys On The Gold Coast.

Long-Arm Quaterback
By A Customer
Cap decided to make a man football league but someone wanted to take his spot so he told his granpa (coach of the team), then granpa let both of them play.I agree with the author about this book. My favorite part was when Cap and Jimmy both try to be quaterback. I liked it because the author showed how each character feeled. Iwould recommend this book anyone who likes football because this book is a story based on football.

Decent
By YulBeBlue
I thought this book was decent. I do love that the book shows the way kids become football stars. If you have that same dream, this is a good book to get advice about making your dream come true. But I think that the action that went on in this book was not enough to make me excited. I would have liked to have seen more interesting things happening in the book. It would have been nice to have the kids go through tryouts to make the team, clutch endings to some of the games, and some players having to play through injuries. If I were to have written this book, I would have made it more like the movie "The Blind Side" where a person struggles and then rises to the top. But overall I enjoyed the book.

From Publishers Weekly
This slipcased, scrapbook-style homage to Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts commemorates the comic strip's 60th anniversary. Mined from the Schulz museum and family archives, photographs, booklets, prints, and removable reproductions (such as a Peanuts-themed "scrapbook" for the Ford Falcon) document the evolution of characters like Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Snoopy. The volume of merchandise on display makes evident the comic's cultural influence, but readers may be surprised to learn of the comic's social impact: a 1968 letter (included as a reproduction) implores Schulz to diversify the cast: "It occurred to me today that the introduction of Negro children... could happen with a minimum of impact" (Schulz then introduced Franklin). And following the publication of Silent Spring in 1962, Lucy mentions that her baseball bat is signed by Rachel Carson. Discussions of Schulz's 2000 death and Peanuts themes like "unrequited love" may bring a tear to the eyes of steadfast fans. The comic's spirit of quiet wisdom resonates through the carefully compiled memorabilia. (Oct.)

From Booklist
It’s been a decade since the death of cartoonist Charles Schulz, but the popularity of his comic strip Peanuts shows no signs of abating: reprints of vintage strips appear in 2,200 newspapers, TV adaptations remain perennially popular, and Charlie Brown and his friends continue to adorn T-shirts worldwide. The millions of die-hard fans who sustain the strip’s success will delight in this lavish offering, which draws on the holdings of the Charles M. Schulz Museum and the family’s archives. The succinctly informative text, along with a representative handful of strips, is the crux of the volume, but the bulk is devoted to a motley yet fascinating assemblage of memorabilia: rare photos, preliminary sketches, toys and games, promotional materials, and advertisements featuring the characters. Scrapbook-type items are housed in pouches, including coloring-book pages, a facsimile animation cell, trading cards, and even correspondence from fans. The result is a treasure trove for Peanutophiles. Libraries that have had circulation success with the recent volumes reprinting the entire 50-year run of Peanuts should supplement that series with this lovingly curated tribute. --Gordon Flagg

A treasure for older fans, but won't win any new ones
By Rich L
Full disclosure: first off, I'm not a huge fan of these `treasure trove' types of books where the book comes with removable reprints of memorabilia, and second, I love Peanuts. So these two things should even themselves out.

There's something about the antics of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, et al. that just gets me. Whether it's Charlie Brown's constant underdog status, Snoopy's understated cool, Linus' unshakable belief in things he's told are wrong, or Lucy's cynicism, there are so many elements of the strip that resonate with me and, given it's longevity and popularity, millions of others.

Even accepting my general dislike of this kind of book, this - released to coincide with Peanuts' 60th anniversary - is a nice example of how they should be done. Not every page has something detachable, thankfully, but virtually every page does have several pictures of rare items. Items included include a film cel, some frameable prints, stickers, comics, a Great Pumpkin carol leaflet, early advertising featuring the characters (for the Ford Falcon) and much more.

On the text side, the book is relatively light - but that seems to be par for the course for these things. Yes, there are over 25 `chapters' but each one takes only a page of the book and focuses on one topic. Subjects range from character pieces (why Linus and Lucy get combined on one page I'll never know) to merchandising, animation, and a look at how the character of Franklin broke new ground. Writer Nat Gertler has an amazingly comprehensive knowledge of the strip and it's history so they never fail to be entertaining, if short.

Realistically, this book isn't going to win any new fans to the world of Peanuts but conversely it's probably not aimed at them. For fans of the strip already, there's plenty new here to enjoy - and for those people, I'd highly recommend the book.

Comment From the Peanut Gallery
By Tony Medeiros
Nat Gertler's The Peanuts Collection: Treasures from the World's Most Beloved Comic Strip is perhaps one of the greatest collection of Peanuts memorabilia in book form. This is the ultimate book for the Peanuts enthusiast. If you live in North America it's a good chance that Peanuts has crossed your life at one point or another. The archetypes of the Peanuts universe have touched many facets of the pop culture and is part of the American lexicon fabric. Peanuts has become a security blanket to our youth. That eternal youthful optimism is captured by the strip and gives us hope even if Charlie Brown is doomed to be a failure. Nat Gertler's book is a collection of memories of our own life as we skip through a time capsule of rare time pieces emulated through the Peanuts impact on society. We all have a claim on the Peanuts universe, there is a piece of us in all the characters. The Peanuts Collection: Treasures from the World's Most Beloved Comic Strip is a celebration of our love for the basic fundamentals of a rich comic strip that beats to a universal chord. Peanuts always leaves you with a fuzzy feeling of happiness. After all, happiness is a warm puppy.

Ultimate collection for Peanuts' fans
By Leslie
The comic strip Peanuts ran for almost 50 years in 2,600 newspapers, a record number. During those years 18,000 strips were published. When Charles Schultz fell ill in 1999 new strips ended. Readers still wanted to see Peanuts in the comic section even if they weren't new. As a result the strip still appears in over 2,200 newspapers. Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy and the gang are now firmly a part of pop culture. This beautiful book is the ultimate collection for Peanuts' fans.

I grew up reading Peanuts, listening to Snoopy vs the Red Baron, watching the Holiday Specials; I thought I knew everything there was to know about them. Well, I was wrong. This collection is a wealth of information. Longtime fans will find many familiar items plus much new material, some of which has never before been seen by the public.

The book begins with a forward from Schultz's daughter and a note from the author. After that it's divided into about 30 two-page sections. Each section focuses on one of the characters or holidays or something from Peanuts' pop culture. About a third of each section is text with the rest artwork, illustrations, photos and removable materials such as reproductions of sketches, letters, stickers, coloring book, prints of the Peanuts characters and much more. The text is filled with fascinating detail about the creation and evolution of the characters.

We learn that neither Lucy nor Linus was part of the original Peanuts crew. In their early years they were very young children and soon grew up to be an important part of the strip. We also learn that Snoopy started out as just a dog. Not a beagle, not a WWI flying ace, just a dog. Eventually he evolved to be superior to the kids in the strip. It was way back in 1960 when Charles Schultz integrated the comics page by introducing Franklin, a ground breaking move. There's an entire section on the good causes the Peanuts gang promoted. This is just a small sample of what is covered in this collection.

What I found most striking was the high quality artwork and the beautiful layout. If you are of a certain age this book will not only entertain you but will bring back lots of memories. I've read it through twice already and I'm still noticing new things. This is the type of book you need to see to appreciate.
