By Larry
Darren Shan has done it agine with a another great book. "Brothers to the Death" is the fourth book in the crepsley saga and it gets even better; all sorts of twist are in the book and a further look into the life of Larten Crepsley. Also, just like Cirque Du Freak's final book "Sons of Destiny" the tittle was a hint for the big twist in the book "Brothers to the Death" does the same thing. I highly recommend this book.

"[A] cute and gory sequel to September 2010's Married with Zombies." ---Publishers Weekly

About the Author
A Facebook application once told Jesse Petersen that she'd only survive a day in a zombie outbreak, but she doesn't believe that. For one, she's a good shot and two, she has an aversion to bodily fluids, so she'd never go digging around in zombie goo. Until the zombie apocalypse, she lives in the Midwest with her husband and two cats. Find out more about the author at www.jessepetersen.net.

I love it!
By VampireNovelFan
This series is awesome! If you're a fan of zombie movies like Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, then you'll love this. Husband and wife team, Dave and Sarah, are in the Zombie-killing business--and business is a-booming. That is, until they discover a new strain of Zombie; one that is stronger, faster, and smarter. How will they get out of this one? It has you at the edge of your seat. They run into a doctor whose working on a cure, but needs their help to acquire zombies to be his "test subjects." They also gain a side kick named, Robbie; he's pretty resourceful 11-year-old who provides many laughs and smart-alecky comments.

I didn't read book 1 of this series, and I didn't really need to. Book 2 never really made me feel like I missed a beat. Very entertaining and engaging ride with a great dose of comedy, action, horror, and a touch of romance. I highly recommend this series. I will soon read book 1 and anxiously await book 3.

I laughed. I got a little squeamish. And I think I'll be sleeping with the lights on tonight.
By C. Tyer
After reading the first book in the series, Married with Zombies, I have been anxiously awaiting the second installment of the Living with the Dead series. I'm a big zombie fan, and I've always been a little bummed that so few people take advantage of the opportunities for humor where zombies are concerned. Possibly one of the reasons I'm so in love with these books is that they are funny, and there's all the zombie stuff of course, but they have a certain mix of dark reality, humor and real people that make these books so enjoyable.

Flip this Zombie focuses on what David and Sarah have been doing since the world fell apart and picked itself back up and moved on a little. Considering their zombie killing tactics learned early on, they've set up shop as the go-to-guys for all your zombie killing needs! The plot of Flip this Zombie dips into the dark reality that not all people are good - and if given the opportunity they could very well do some very bad things. But you have the ZombieBusters to call on for help, laughs and a decapitated zombie. There are some seriously awesome parts that I will not spoil, I'll just tell you to get ready to reread some parts and laugh!

I laughed. I got a little squeamish. And I think I'll be sleeping with the lights on tonight.

Readable But the Aspects That Made the Original Married With Zombies, Different to the Norm and a Masterpiece, Aren't There
By James N Simpson
The first book in this series was so different to the thousands of other zombie novels out there, because of the tension and dislike for each between Sarah, the narrator and the other main character her would have been soon to be ex husband David. That bickering and using little things that annoyed each other to make the story funnier, such as the left up toilet seat to kill encountered zombies, made Married Zombies the can't put down masterpiece that it was. None of that exists in the sequel, Dave and Sarah are happy with each other, the only tension arrives when one feels the other is about to unnecessarily risk their life or a bit of territorial jealousy by Dave with their new client, which rubs Sarah the wrong way and may or may not be affecting Dave's ability to read a situation.

We've also moved on from the outbreak just occurring in the first novel, and the two bumbling their way through survival to a fair amount of time having passed, society has accepted what is going on, reborn themselves in smaller fortified settlements and basically started over. Dave and Sarah are now experts at dispatching the undead. In fact that's what they're doing now, running an extermination business where for trade such as half a pack of children's band-aids they will risk death or infection to rid a building of others pesky zombie infestation. So we loose a lot of the edge of your seat action from the first novel as they now seemly just run them down with their van, lop off their heads or shoot them in the heads with little effort. Plus it doesn't seem to me to be something that you'd bother doing for so little reward especially when Sarah boasts later in the story that you can just take anything in this massively reduced population world such as whatever luxury car you want or whatever you find when you walk into any house. So why not just scavenge and kill when necessary the odd zombie you find while doing that instead of risking all for half a box of children's plasters.

The don't want to stop reading until the final page factor of the first book isn't there with Flip the Zombie. The story does improve from about half way when the couple now trying to capture rather than kill a zombie for a new client, get a new sidekick named Robbie. In fact that's where a bit of the tension Sarah used to have between herself and her husband sort of reappears when she copes with Robbie's behaviour.

If you've read the first book, although you'll be disappointed, you may want to get read this just to know what happens to the characters. I think there was a room timelines wise for a book set back in Dave's sister's town before jumping so far into the future for this tale and we've have missed out on a lot of potential marriage tension and developing their zombie combat skills through learning by each encounter. I ordered the next book Eat Slay Love along with this after reading the first novel so I will read that too but I'm not sure I would have bothered after this one, if I hadn't already done that. Still the author Jesse Petersen clearly has the talent, maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised and the third instalment will be as good as the first.

The Real Animal House: The Awesomely Depraved Saga of the Fraternity That Inspired the Movie, by Chris Miller

"Loud, raucous, infantile, racy, and very funny...The book is full of likable eccentrics, sexual shenanigans, and--if you know where to look for them--valuable life lessons."--Booklist

Animal House, the movie, didn't tell the half of it.

Writing with a freshness and joy that make Dartmouth 1960 feel like a beer-soaked rock-and-roll heaven on earth, Chris Miller tells the real story of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity as no one else could. Seal, Doberman, Otter, the legendary Moses (he of the burning bush) - these titans and dozens of others come alive again, terrorizing the administration, taunting cops, surviving their own lunacy, and challenging the squareness of a stifling time. The Real Animal House is the perfect antidote for a conventional age much like today.

"A breezy, chuckle-worthy read, and a must for the Animal House fan." -Courier-Post

"Action-packed. . . . A boozy holler of a book, with a great soundtrack." -Kirkus Reviews

"A seriously funny read. . . . The joy and exuberance that Pinto and his pals demonstrate holds a lesson for every generation that needs to learn not to blindly follow the expectations of parents and guidance counselors, but to seek out those blissful bands of merry misfits that appear from time to time." -Review

From Publishers Weekly
The screenplay for National Lampoon's Animal House was the brainchild of National Lampoon editor Harold Ramis, Doug Kenny and Miller, who turned Dartmouth frat life into the 1978 hit movie. Often, their stories were considered too sordid for Universal's producers to air. Ironically, what seemed too gross to put on screen in the '70s is now too boring to put in print. Yet without actors to give dimension to the zany characters, the tall tales feel like an awkward, horny sophomore faking bravado. What readers learn is Miller's obsession with puerile details and his insane desire to degrade himself. Pinto, the name he gave himself at Dartmouth, finds acceptance at a fraternity because of his "booting prowess" (vomiting skills); he witnesses the sexual victories of his pals, drinks himself sick and survives car accidents. Like the outtakes in DVDs, this book proves that Miller's frat-boy shenanigans deserved to stay on the cutting-room floor, not because of any sense of prudery, but to save the reader from testosterone-fueled overkill. Die-hard fans may be amused by the tales of "Bags" and "Seal," the two real-life inspirations for Animal House's Bluto, the role John Belushi nailed. But none of the recorded pranks have the life-spirit contained in Belushi's clarion call: "Toga!" (Dec.)

From Booklist
Billed as a "wildly exaggerated memoir," this book by the writer whose autobiographical stories for National Lampoon were the basis of the movie Animal House is exactly what you would expect it to be: loud, raucous, infantile, racy, and very funny. It's hard to tell where Miller draws the line between reporting and making it up, but does it really matter? Like the movie, this Animal House isn't about real fraternity life; it's about the life that the stereotypical frat brother from the 1950s and early 1960s wishes he had lived. The book is full of likable eccentrics, sexual shenanigans, and--if you know where to look for them--valuable life lessons. Put on a CD of '50s and '60s rock 'n' roll, sit back, and let Miller transport you to a place and time that never actually existed--but wouldn't it be something if it had? David Pitt

Much better than I expected
By Koogan
When I considered buying this book, I thought, "How many times can Animal House be re-told, or revisited?" Thankfully, at least one more time. This is a great, quick book to read, but it's not for squeamish or easily offended readers. But how many of those folks are reading books about Animal House?

The first thing I can recall reading by Chris Miller was a story in the National Lampoon back in the mid-70s titled "A Thanksgiving Memory", which I will forever remember as one of the most perverted, sick, and hilarious things ever printed. Miller still has the ability to write about almost every type of perversion imaginable and make it extremely funny.

The book has its slow parts, and some of the stories seem revised or toned-down from earlier versions I've read here and there. However, there are so many surprises and outrageous moments in this, it's hard to be bothered by a few boring parts.

My only suggestion for potential readers is don't leave this laying around where any overly-sensitive people might pick it up and glance through it. They will be extremely disappointed in you.

When the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor
By Bytesman
As Flounder once said in a similar context: "Oh, boy, is this great!" Chris Miller has managed to offer up a story of such depravity and degradation that it's hard to believe he and his fellow ADs at Dartmouth College in the early 1960s were actually bright and talented students as well - but they were. Miller himself graduated with an AB in English and an MBA from the Tuck School while taking advantage of what was then referred to as the 3-2 program, with the senior year doubling as the first year of business school. Miller is/was no dummy, and it comes across in his storytelling. In many ways, it is an outrageous book, but, if you can believe it, an honest one, as most of these things actually did happen. I know because I was there. Of course, not all of the ADs were drunken and depraved all of the time; nor were the Betas and SAEs always the saints he portrays them to be. But AD certainly had "gear" and everyone wanted to be a part of their parties with wonderful, black, r'n'r bands that they typically shared with their neighboring Chi Phi, a slightly more (but not that much more) buttoned up version of AD. This is not high literature, but if you have a long flight somewhere, take this book along and you'll find yourself at your destination before you know it. The emmets and pinheads, Balch Hill, Tanzi's, the Green Lantern (aka the Green Latrine), Lou's--it's all there and those of us who were privileged to be a part of Dartmouth during this time had some great fun.

Just what I expected!
By J. Barksdale
When I saw this book on the shelf, I thought "Cool, maybe some more insight other then the movie!" As I have seen the movie, like many, hundreds of times...The great thing about this book is that it "stands alone," meaning that you will not find the antics too repetitive if you have seen the movie over and over. Sure, there are many plot lines from the movie that are OBVIOUSLY drawn from this book...However, many new hijinks! Not for the squeamish as there are many descriptive sexual shenanigans, etc...Loved it! Can't understand how anyone who loves the movie would not love this book! Many times I had to put the book down as I was LMAO! My only complaint, and a minor one at that, is that there are too many fraternity brothers names to keep up with...

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-D.W. is back, and this time she is being punished for pinching her baby sister and snatching her block. While banished to her room for 10 minutes, D.W. begins to feel sorry for herself, believing that she is being treated as a slave by her family and fearing that she may starve before her punishment is up. When Mother brings Kate to D.W.'s room to be watched, D.W. at first resents the additional chore foisted upon her, but soon she and Kate are playing happily, and dinnertime comes too soon. Once again, Brown captures the essence of family dynamics in words and pictures, showing the youngster's self-pity, frustration, and eventual happiness with life in general.

From Booklist
Sent to her room after grabbing a toy from her baby sister, D. W. finds the 10-minute timeout interminable. But when her mother asks her to watch baby Kate for a minute, the sulking D. W. is quickly won over by her smiling sister's offer of a pacifier. It's a quick fix for sibling troubles and a sweet ending for the story, but even preschoolers know that problems are seldom so easily resolved. Still, the story is simple, the pictures are deftly drawn, and any new picture book about these popular characters will be in demand for the foreseeable future. Buy accordingly. Carolyn Phelan

Sorry Baby Kate
By A Customer
When D.W. is playing with her blocks her little sister comes and takes a block and laughs at her. When she takes another one D.W. warns her not to take another one or she'll pinch her and she takes her block back. Kate begins to cry and D.W.'s mother sends her up to her room for 10 minutes until dinner. When D.W. keeps coming out of her room she keeps getting sent back in there. When her mother asks her to watch her sister she realizes how mean she was and hugs Kate. Just then her mother walks in and sees how nice D.W. is being so she lets her come out.

All Arthur Books Are Treasures But This One Does Something I Particularly Like
By Dai-keag-ity
Here as in all of Mr. Brown's spectacular Arthur series you'll find a fun tale, illustrations you want to keep looking at to find all the little details, and the story of the goings-on in the (mis)adventures of the old familiar characters, but in this one there's something more that's especially neat. After DW gets sent to her room for hurting Baby Kate and generally acting up, she at first broods over what she feels like is her unfair lot in life, and then Brown gets really cool and makes you think about the way a child DW's age experiences time in relation to how an adult does. To DW as to all children, ten minutes banishment is a gulf of quasi-intolerable length and if a grown-up stops to think about that, it's a fairly deep topic, this perception of time.

Anne Elizabeth's Diary: A Young Artist's True Story, by Anne Elizabeth Rector, Kathleen Krull, Catherine Chermayeff

any girls have dreamed that their diaries would someday be discovered and published, and that's just what has happened with this gem! Found in the attic of the house in which Anne Elizabeth Rector grew up, Anne Elizabeth's Diary is both a glimpse into what life was like for a 12-year-old girl in early-twentieth-century New York City, as well as a portrait of the early development of a young artist. Anne's wry entries are accompanied by her own exquisite illustrations, as well as sidebars that further explore details of America in 1912--from the toys (kaleidoscopes, ouija boards) to the clothes (hats with feathers, pink dresses), and much more. Fans of the Dear America and American Girl series will relish this book's rich history and detail.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5–Rector was an aspiring young artist living in New York City in 1912. During that year, the 12-year-old kept a diary; her simple sentences and charming pen-and-ink illustrations reflect on her life, thoughts, and wishes. To her entries Kathleen Krull has added informative sidebars on early-20th-century, middle-class life, events of the day, famous people, and about how this real girl might have been influenced by movies, literature, and some of the more progressive women and teachers of her time. Rector succeeded in pursuing an art education at The Art Students League of New York and eventually supported her family through the Depression with a small art business she shared with her talented dress designer and seamstress mother. The diary is a wonderful snapshot of a child's life during the period coupled with fact-filled snippets detailing street life in New York, fashion, ship travel, private-school education, girls' roles in sports, and women artists of the day including Georgia O'Keeffe and Mary Cassatt. The book is printed on pale peach paper and the text is in a handwritten font. Krull has also included a brief follow-up on Rector's adult life, her marriage to Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Edward Duffy, and family photographs taken by her father. A note by the artist's granddaughter further personalizes the volume.–Rita Soltan, Oakland University, Rochester, MI

From Booklist
Gr. 3-7. Rector was one of the first female American artists of prominence. As a 12-year-old, she began keeping a diary that included both writing and artwork. Nearly 100 years later, her granddaughter, Catherine Chermayeff, found the diary, which shows Rector's development as a freethinking woman and artist. The journal entries are short and written in the youthful vernacular of the early twentieth century. Prim and privileged yet opinionated and clever, young Anne Elizabeth makes a vivid subject, and her full-color artwork, though simple, adds an innocent grace to the text. Throughout, writer-editor Krull adds detailed sidebars that offer a glimpse of New York at the time, including living conditions, travel, entertainment, libraries, political and social issues, and prominent people that Anne Elizabeth met through her photographer father. Krull also includes a few pages about Rector's adult life as well as tips on keeping a diary and further resources. Rounding out this pleasurable read are many photos of Anne Elizabeth. Beautifully presented, this book offers an authentic glimpse into the mind of a burgeoning artist. Roger Leslie

A great story but beware, the diary has been embellished
By K. Wilson
Anne Elizabeth's Diary is a collection of diary excerpts written and illustrated by Anne Elizabeth Rector at age 12. The diary was written in 1912 while Anne Elizabeth was growing up in New York City. The book contains an Introduction with information about Anne Elizabeth's childhood and her love of drawing. There are also sidebars featured throughout the book providing more information about things Anne Elizabeth mentions, such as life in the early 1900s, New York culture, events, and the role of women in society. In addition, at the end of the diary entries there is a section titled, "What Happened Next?," detailing Anne Elizabeth's adult life as an artist and her marriage to Edward Duffy, a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist. Other features include a note from Anne Elizabeth's granddaughter, tips on keeping a diary, an index, and an author's note.

I truly enjoyed this book until I read the author's note written by Kathleen Krull on the last page. Krull indicates that because women weren't raised to show feelings during this time period, Anne Elizabeth did not reveal enough information about her feelings. Krull remedied this by adding "interpretations, continuity, and emotion" based on interviews with her daughter and granddaughter. I would have preferred that either the diary excerpts stay true to the original form or that this information would have been given in the introduction to the book.

This book would be appropriate for ages 8 through 12. Children in this age range who are interested in biographies and life in the past will enjoy reading about Anne Elizabeth's life growing up in the early twentieth century. The fact that she overcame the odds and became a successful artist will be inspiring to children with dreams and goals for their own future careers. In addition, children these ages will be able to identify with Anne Elizabeth's difficulties in getting her family to understand her. I would recommend that this book be used with students studying famous artists or life in the early twentieth century. The book features photographs of Anne Elizabeth and her family, providing readers with an authentic glimpse of her life. Original drawings from her diary are also included. Although the book does not reproduce the original pages from her diary, the text is in a handwritten typeset, giving the book the feel of a real diary.

A Beautiful Little Book
By amethystgirls
I loved this book and found it charming and a book not only for young aspiring artist's but something adults will enjoy as well. I have given several of these as gifts and the recipient's loved them too. This book is a beautiful little book and the tiny illustrations make you smile. If it was embellished, I am still glad to have it in my library.

great for any age
By Jason Paul Collum
I first read SUMMER OF FEAR in high school and found it to be the first book I couldn't put down, actually reading it all the way through in one sitting! Lois Duncan takes typical teenage angst and self-conscious paranoia and spins them together in a web of horror and mystery.
Rachel is the number one priority of her family until her cousin Julia (parents recently deceased) moves in. The two bond as sisters at first, but when Julia begins to receive all the attention, Rachel's jealousy kicks into high gear. The spin here is when "accidents" and deaths become common place. Rachel suspects Julia to be responsible, but the jealousy Rachel's family has witnessed lend them to believe Rachel is just looking for attention, leaving her to discover her "cousin's" evil secrets and legacy.
A great suspense novel I still reread occasionally. Check out the movie starring a teenaged Linda Blair as "Rachel" and Fran (The Nanny) Drescher as her best friend!

This is an awesome book!
By A Customer
This book is awesome until the last gripping page. When I checked this book out at the library I was a little nervous because the cover art looked really scary. It turned out to be one of my favorite Lois Duncan titles yet.
The book starts out when Rachel's aunt and uncle die and their teenage daughter Julia comes to live with Rachel's family. Julia is incredibly beautiful and Rachel is jealous of her right away. Then she starts trying to steal Rachel's boyfriend and Rachel's brother. Rachel finds really strange things in the room she shares with Julia, things normal teenage girls wouldn't have. Rachel tries to warn her Mother and Father but they just brush it off as jealousy. Then the things go from bad to worse. You just have to read the story to find out!

Lois Duncan has done it again with the book Summer Of Fear
By A Customer
The author, Lois Duncan, has brought out the characters in this book, giving each of them unique traits. Lois Duncan has written yet another mystery novel that is filled with suspense and excitement. The story opens up with Rachel a seventeen-year-old girl remembering a summer when a strange incident happens. Her cousin Julia comes to live with them. Julia ruins Rachel's life and plans to take over. Julia starts by stealing her boyfriends and her girlfriends. During this story Rachel tries to convince her family and friends that Julia is bad. But of course her family does not believe her.
As Duncan travels the characters through the book she brings them through all of her troubles. I thought this book was great and I hope you will want to read it too.

To Lizzie, the Verver household, presided over by Evie's big-hearted father, is the world's most perfect place.

And then, one afternoon, Evie disappears. The only clue: a maroon sedan Lizzie spotted driving past the two girls earlier in the day. As a rabid, giddy panic spreads through the Midwestern suburban community, everyone looks to Lizzie for answers. Was Evie unhappy, troubled, upset? Had she mentioned being followed? Would she have gotten into the car of a stranger?

Lizzie takes up her own furtive pursuit of the truth, prowling nights through backyards, peering through windows, pushing herself to the dark center of Evie's world. Haunted by dreams of her lost friend and titillated by her own new power at the center of the disappearance, Lizzie uncovers secrets and lies that make her wonder if she knew her best friend at all.

Brilliantly Written, But Not The Book For Me
By Melissa
Lizzie was the last person to see her best friend, Evie Verver. For thirteen years the two had been inseparable, but now Evie was gone. The only clue was the maroon car Lizzie had seen right before she left Evie to go shopping with her mom. When the police were not able to locate her, Lizzie began her own search to find out where Evie may have been taken. However, as Lizzie dug deeper, she began to realize the friend she thought she knew was someone quite different. In a dark and rather disturbing novel, The End of Everything is brilliantly written, but difficult to read.

Had I realized what this book was going to be about and how it was written, I would not have picked it up. It's a good book, but right now I just want to read something light and fluffy to wipe away the images that were left behind by this story. It's sad, disturbing, and not at all what I was expecting. Instead of a novel that revolves around solving a crime, it's told by thirteen year old Lizzie and is very much a loss of innocence book. I was not prepared to dive into a world of romanticized pedophilia or teenage sexuality. It's not that these issues were glorified, but they're there none the less and not something I was expecting or prepared to read.

This is an exceptionally well written book. Abbott has a great ability to create vivid images and evoke strong emotions. She does a nice job of setting the atmosphere and capturing the mind of a child who knows much, but really doesn't know anything. However, it's her writing talents that are also a detriment. It's hard to read a story where the thirteen year old narrator was seeing the kidnapper as possessing a great love for the child he's taken. Nor was it comfortable to read many of Lizzie's recollections with Evie, as many of them had sexual overtones. There was a strong realistic element to this story, but it wasn't something I wanted to read.

Even though I would have liked for Abbott to have left some innocence in the story, I am glad that she allowed the reader to be disgusted by the characters and their warped relationships. It would have been easy to tell the reader what they should think, but instead she lets them take the events and feel the sickness of these characters for themselves. I don't need a happily ever after ending, but there is a part of me that wishes there was a glimmer of hope in this story.

I feel much the same way about The End Of Everything as I do Lord Of The Flies. There is a terrible sadness for children when they lose their innocence; when the world and life they know is suddenly shattered and they realize things will never return to where they were before. While I think this is a brilliantly written book, I wish I hadn't read it. This is not a book for everyone.

Something Strange in the Verver Household
By KarenBookLover
I started off really enjoying the book;I'm very fond of adult books with teenage narrators, and I like Abbott's writing. However, about halfway through, the book began to feel a bit creepy, especially in the depiction of the Verver family dynamics--and of Mr. Verver in particular.I know that Lizzie was hungry for a strong, male role model, and in her hero-worship of Mr. Verver, she was looking for ways to bask in the glow of his full attention. When Evie first disappeared, it was natural for Lizzie to cooperate with the police and to be at the Verver's house to give any help that she could. As the situation continued,it looked to me as if Mr. Verver was leaning on Lizzie..or perhaps courting her.I didn't really like her late night lawn chair conversations with him, and I didn't like Lizzie spending so much time with him, down in the basement, setting up for Dusty's substitute "prom." I would think that Lizzie's mother might have found this friendship to be somewhat troubling or inappropriate, but she just compliments her daughter on being so sensitive to their neighbors, All of it's a bit ironic.
The early conversations between Dusty and her father (especially the ones about boys and dating)also seemed inappropriate--more like a flirtatious exchange between peers(boy and girl)than an affectionately teasing father-daughter conversation. When you add in the fact that Mrs. Verver(who had supposedly once been sexy and attractive)was now a shadowy character, somewhat irrelevant to her husband and daughters,I think that it paints a picture of an off-kilter family. I don't know if there was any kind of sexual contact between Dusty and her father (although I think that the book's conclusion might be suggesting that), but it seemed to me that Dusty had replaced her mother in her father's affections and that Evie was just an also-ran- loved, but not treasured in the same way that Dusty was. Dusty's strange behavior after Evie's disappearance (going off to her grandmother for weeks at a time, avoiding her father)suggests that she was uncomfortable being around her parents. Was Evie's decision to explore a male-female relationship the result of jealousy over her sister and father's closeness? Was it a way of her dealing with her own "crush" on her father? (He was forbidden to her so she needed a substitute,)I'm not sure what to make of it all.

creepy and a little too real
By Ne_Philim
Replete with Daddy issues and twisted sibling rivalry, this novel has an insidiously disturbing effect that creeps up on you long after you think a particular plot point has been resolved. It's not so much the horrible events of this novel that will haunt you, but rather the horrible character defects and petty jealousies that allow them to happen. I recommend this novel if you like really dark psychological suspense.

Beware!

Dangerous secrets lie between the pages of this book.

OK, I warned you. But if you think I'll give anything away, or tell you that this is the sequel to my first literary endeavor, The Name of This Book is Secret, you're wrong.

I'm not going to remind you of how we last left our heroes, Cass and Max-Ernest, as they awaited intiation into the mysterious Terces Society, or the ongoing fight against the evil Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. I certainly won't be telling you about how the kids stumble upon the Museum of Magic, where they finally meet the amazing Pietro!

Oh, blast! I've done it again. Well, at least I didn't tell you about the missing Sound Prism, the nefarious Lord Pharaoh, or the mysterious creature born in a bottle over 500 years ago, the key to the biggest secret of all.

I really can't help myself, now can I? Let's face it - if you're reading this, it's too late.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4–6—This stand-alone sequel to The Name of This Book Is Secret (Little, Brown, 2007) combines mystery, adventure, and fantasy. On their mission for the Terces Society, 11-year-old Cass and Max-Ernest must find the homunculus, a 500-year-old man born in a bottle, before Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais do. The evil duo plans to use him to uncover the secret of immortality. The use of an overbearing narrator to create a sense of danger works in the beginning, but grows tiresome toward the end. The numerous parenthetical comments and footnotes are often laugh-out-loud funny, but also draw readers out of the action. Bosch creates sufficiently quirky, well-rounded protagonists, while stereotypes suffice for the secondary characters, with the exception of the homunculus. Cynical humor shines through in the portrayal of the Skelton Sisters, an evil tween pop group in the employ of Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. The dark illustrations, descending chapter numbers, and playful fonts will catch readers' attention. Fans of Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" (HarperCollins) will enjoy this slightly more fleshed-out read.—Kim Ventrella, Ralph Ellison Library, Oklahoma City, OK

From Booklist
The adventures of aspiring magician Max-Ernest and survivalist-in-training Cass continue. As with The Name of This Book Is Secret (2007), the author often intrudes on the story to offer dire warnings to the reader that even reading this tale is too dangerous to consider, presumably because of a world-shatteringly nefarious secret and the evil machinations of the two young adventurers’ archnemeses, Dr. L and Ms. Mauvais. It’s a clever ploy that adds a level of heightened drama to the tale, which, underneath all the trappings, has some neat elements (a “Sound Prism,” a cantankerous homunculus) but lacks many true thrills. There are still codes for Max-Ernest and Cass to unravel and secret societies to infiltrate, but the injection of a third main cast member reeks of the old sitcom ploy of throwing in a hip new character in an attempt to make a show fresh. Chapter-opening illustrations add a lighthearted touch to this solid sequel, which is more character-driven than the first, and will hit or miss depending on what readers like more, the people or the puzzles. Grades 4-7. --Ian Chipman

This is a fun book with an interesting narrative. Cass and Max-Ernest are young adults who have recently been involved with a secret society, the details of which are located in the previous book in the series. Although you do miss out on some details of the protagonists, you could read this book without having read the previous installment, THE NAME OF THIS BOOK IS SECRET.

When you read IF YOU'RE READING THIS, IT'S TOO LATE, it is as though you are being told a story by the campfire.

The characters are well-developed, easy to relate to, and have a good sense of humor. Because of the short chapters and common footnotes, I see this as a great book for a reluctant reader. It is easy to pick up where you left off and it takes you down many paths at once, keeping you interested. The footnotes typically add a humorous aspect to an interesting mystery, allowing the reader to venture in a new direction before continuing on with the story.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It had a strong storyline with characters that took risks and maintained and created friendships.

Ok so read to the end of IYRTITL and you'll get it. I agree with the other reviewer who liked PB's interview with PB at the back of the book. That was hilarity worthy of...I don't know, someone hilarious! PB, I guess... So yes, PB, go ahead and give yourself 5 stars...though I know you would, at the very least, anyways! And I hope there is a book 3.

Great Tales from English History (Book 2): Joan of Arc, the Princes in the Tower, Bloody Mary, Oliver Cromwell, Sir Isaac Newton, and More

The greatest historians are vivid storytellers, Robert Lacey reminds us, and in Great Tales from English History, he proves his place among them, illuminating in unforgettable detail the characters and events that shaped a nation. In this volume, Lacey limns the most important period in England's past, highlighting the spread of the English language, the rejection of both a religion and a traditional view of kingly authority, and an unstoppable movement toward intellectual and political freedom from 1387 to 1689. Opening with Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and culminating in William and Mary's "Glorious Revolution," Lacey revisits some of the truly classic stories of English history: the Battle of Agincourt, where Henry V's skilled archers defeated a French army three times as large; the tragic tale of the two young princes locked in the Tower of London (and almost certainly murdered) by their usurping uncle, Richard III; Henry VIII's schismatic divorce, not just from his wife but from the authority of the Catholic Church; "Bloody Mary" and the burning of religious dissidents; Sir Francis Drake's dramatic, if questionable, part in the defeat of the Spanish Armada; and the terrible and transformative Great Fire of London, to name but a few. Here Anglophiles will find their favorite English kings and queens, villains and victims, authors and architects - from Richard II to Anne Boleyn, the Virgin Queen to Oliver Cromwell, Samuel Pepys to Christopher Wren, and many more. Continuing the "eminently readable, highly enjoyable" (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) history he began in volume I of Great Tales from English History, Robert Lacey has drawn on the most up-to-date research to present a taut and riveting narrative, breathing life into the most pivotal characters and exciting landmarks in England's history.

From Publishers Weekly
Acclaimed historian Lacey's second volume on English history opens in 1348, the year of the Black Plague, which wiped out half of England's five million people, and proceeds through the astonishing scientific discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton in 1687. Along the way, we meet characters as diverse as Chaucer, Richard II, Henry IV, William Caxton, Guy Fawkes, Richard Whittington, Lady Jane Grey and Titus Oates. In lively vignettes, Lacey (The Year 1000; Majesty) also regales us with such events as the Puritan civil war, the London fire of 1666 and Sir Walter Raleigh's voyages to the New World. Political and religious dissent dominate these tales. Lacey captures the humor inherent in the evolution of England's history; thus, he includes the story of the first modern water closet, invented by Queen Elizabeth's godson, Sir John Harrington. In addition, Lacey briefly chronicles the British attraction to the rare and the exotic in the tale of John Tradescant's opening to the public in the 1630s of his collection of artifacts and curiosities—England's "first museum." Lacey's animated prose, energetic storytelling and spirited approach to British history bring the past to life. 51 b&w illus., 2 maps. (June 2)

TALES WELL TOLD
By E. E Pofahl
The author Robert Lacey, writes "Our first historians were storytellers-our best still are.... " In GREAT TALES From ENGLISH HISTORY-Book 2 Lacey demonstrates that he is among the best, both as a historian and a storyteller. Book 2 begins in 1387 with short comments on Geoffrey Chaucer and ends in 1687 with a brief account of Isaac Newton and his principles of the universe.

Religious and political dissent, dominate this period of English history. The text succinctly covers a multitude of interesting English historical characters such as monarchs Richard II, Richard III, Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VI (the youngest ever King of England), Henry VII, Henry VIII, Bloody Mary, Elizabeth I, William of Orange, etc. plus other important personage such as Oliver Cromwell, Guy Fawkes, Joan of Arc, etc. Also, the Wars of the Roses, the Puritan Civil War and the 1666 London fire are given brief but interesting coverage. The narration of the reign of Elizabeth I is short but well covered. Her reign saw the creation of England's first stock exchange and her attempt at a tolerant middle way came to define a certain strand of Englishness (that still exists). Lacey concludes that "Elizabeth I, Queen of Shakespeare, Ralegh, Drake and the Armada, had presided over one of the most glorious flowering of English history and culture."

Many of Lacey's comments are intriguing. He notes "Henry V's own patriotism was deeply infused with religion. Dreaming of England and France unified beneath God...." Regarding Oliver Cromwell, the author postulates "....has a claim to being England's most remarkable man." The text notes that, with the exception of Goeffrey of Lynn's book Promptorium Parvulorum, "Medieval books were for grown-ups...." No Harry Potter type books for Medieval children. He states Henry V III "....was a great one-arguably England's greatest ever king. Take virtue out of the equation, and his accomplishments were formidable." He notes that "Many Elizabethan amusements were brutal by our taste" observing that "There were several gallows in London. Twenty to thirty offenders were hanged every day the courts sat...." Adults and their children rushed to view the executions.

Book 2 also briefly narrates other important English events such as the defeat of the Spanish Armada, noting that contrary to myth Sir Francis Drake did not lead the Royal Navy in the defeat of the Armada. Succinctly narrated are Sir Walter Raleigh's trips to the New World. Most fascinating is the account of the English village of Eyam whose residents in 1665, after twenty-eight "black plague" deaths, choose not to flee the village and risk spreading the plague around the district. "This clearly, was to risk their own lives in an act of extraordinary self-sacrifice." More than 260 inhabitants (three-quarters of the village's population) died from the plague. It is impossible to conceive of a similar act in today's society.

This is a very easy/enjoyable book to read. Both English history buffs, and those totally unfamiliar with the topic, will enjoy this work. It is sincerely hoped that Robert Lacey will write a third book on the subject.

The Nightstand History of England

A second collection of vignettes from English history by Robert Lacy, pithy and enjoyable. The drawings and layout give the book a cozy, old-fashioned feel. The stories are presented simply and clearly, and make the book an ideal choice for bedtime reading.

Follows In The Footsteps of The First Volume
By Alan Beggerow
This book picks up where Volume One left off. It begins with Chaucer and ends with Sir Isaac Newton.

The style of the first book is continued, as most chapters are 3-4 pages long. A most enjoyable read for any history buff. Books such as these are a wealth of historical tid-bits that are presented in an easily read style. The author continues to shed new light on old tales by including reecent findings on the subjects covered. A must-read for anyone interested in history, particularly English history.

Highly recommended, along with Volume One.
