"We all need models for how to live from retirement to past 80--with joy," writes George Vaillant, M.D., director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development. This groundbreaking book pulls together data from three separate longevity studies that, beginning in their teens, followed 824 individuals for more than 50 years. The subjects were male Harvard graduates; inner-city, disadvantaged males; and intellectually gifted women.

"Here you have these wonderful files, and you seem little interested in how we cope with increasing age ... our adaptability, our zest for life," one of these subjects wrote to Vaillant, a researcher, psychiatrist, and Harvard Medical School professor, about how he was using this information. Vaillant took this advice to heart. In Aging Well, he presents personal narratives about people from these studies whom he interviewed personally in their 70s and 80s. He describes their history, relationships, hardships, philosophies, and sources of joy. We learn their perspectives and what makes them want to get up in the morning.

We also learn what makes old age vital and interesting. Vaillant discusses the important adult developmental tasks, such as identity, intimacy, and generativity (giving to the next generation), and provides important clues to a healthy, meaningful, satisfying old age. Health in old age, we learn, is not predicted by low cholesterol or ancestral longevity, but by factors such as a stable marriage, adaptive coping style (the ability to make lemonade out of life's lemons), and regular exercise.

Vaillant is empathetic and sometimes surprisingly poetic: "Owning an old brain, you see, is rather like owning an old car.... Careful driving and maintenance are everything." He freely includes subjective observations and interpretations, giving us a richer picture of the people he interviewed and insights into their lives. This groundbreaking sociological analysis is based on three research projects that followed over 800 people from their adolescence through old age. Subjects were drawn from the Harvard Grant study of white males, the Inner City study of non-delinquent males and the Terman Women study of gifted females, begun respectively in 1921, 1930 and 1911. In all three studies, subjects were interviewed at regular intervals over time, a design that prevented observations from being skewed by the distortions of memory and allowed for analyses that distinguished effect from cause. Vaillant (The Natural History of Alcoholism), a psychiatrist and professor at the Harvard Medical School, brings a nuanced point of view and an acceptance of the project's limitations. (Those followed were not randomly selected and were overwhelmingly Caucasian.) Nevertheless the author makes compelling use of his data, which is based on intensive contacts with a variety of subjects. Vaillant posits that successful physical and emotional aging is most dependent on a lack of tobacco and alcohol abuse by subjects, an adaptive coping style, maintaining healthy weight with some exercise, a sustained loving (in most cases, marital) relationship and years of education. This is good news since factors that cannot be altered, such as ancestral longevity, parental characteristics and childhood temperament, were among those ruled out as predictors. The book's academic tone will reassure some readers and put others off, but Vaillant's arresting interviews with selected subjects (recounted here) and his ability to learn from the subjects make this an outstanding contribution to the study of aging. A respected researcher, psychiatrist, professor at Harvard Medical School, and author of several books (e.g., The Natural History of Alcoholism), Vaillant uses individual life histories to illustrate how social and emotional development is an ongoing process. His work is based on Harvard's Study of Adult Development, which followed "824 individuals all selected as teenagers for different facets of mental and physical health more than half a century ago and studied for their entire lives." Participants answered biennial questionnaires and underwent physical examinations every five years. Vaillant points out that, while studies like this one are not representative, they do reveal how lifestyle choices can affect whether we reach a happy and healthy old age. He describes the developmental processes that make old age vital being ill without feeling sick, regaining the capacity of creativity and play, acquiring wisdom, and cultivating spirituality and offers suggestions for successful and happy aging. Highly recommended.

GROW OLD GRACEFULLY!

While many individuals may find the reading is too classic textbook and dry for their liking, as one who has studied behavioural psychology, I found the book extremely mind-absorbing.
The book closely follows a study of 824 individuals from birth through to old age and shows us how we can prolong our years and health. While genetics do play a role, there is little we can do to change our genetic make-up. What we can do is change our habits and day-to-day way of living. Easier said than done, but a choice, from a health perspective, that may yeild benefits as the years slowly slip by. One may think that avoiding alcohol and smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight are old hat issues, but the author shows just how dramatically those things can and do affect our remaining years. He also shows how sharing a happy, loving relationship can enhance our feeling of well being. Continuing the education process can also increase our state of health by challenging our mind and keeping it active and alert.
Hopefully, younger, health conscious individuals will take avantage of reading this book in order to prevent many of the pitfalls we fall into as we age. Some of us wait until that magic middle-age crisis hits before we realize what we should have been doing years ago. However, it is never too late to change and many readers will find valuable information here that may make the aging years more fulfilling, healthy and enjoyable. A book, also highly recommended, is "The Wisdom of the Ego" by the same author.

I am slowly reading this book; savoring it. There is so much information to take in and use or think about. It is not a difficult read, just one that helps you understand the image in the mirror. Read it; learn from it; enjoy it.

More confusion than clarity about aging

"Aging Well" is a book that does not clearly establish what it wants to say specifically about aging. Is it a book about longevity or is it a textbook on adult development? A main purpose of the author is to convey the findings of a multi-decade study of three distinct groups totaling about 800 individuals as they aged: a male Harvard student cohort born in 1920; a male inner city cohort born about 1930; and a gifted female cohort born in California about 1910. However the emphasis is on the Harvard cohort, a group that most assuredly stands apart from typical American lives. All of the interviewees were at least 70 years of age by 2000 but the specific commonality of longevity seems to get lost in the author's focus on more general social and emotional developmental concerns. However, the author establishes little connection between longevity and such development.
Perhaps the biggest problem with the book is that only a very limited, and at times inadequate, overview is presented regarding various social and emotional developmental topics. The author bases the entire book on Erik Erikson's ideas about adult developmental stages, which in his interpretation consists of the sequential tasks of identity, intimacy, career consolidation, generativity, keeper of the meaning, and integrity. There is no discussion about the legitimacy of those ideas or whether there are alternative ideas. The principal means of elaborating on those views is by presenting mini-profiles of about 50 individuals throughout the book who supposedly have or have not attained a particular level of development. It is burdensome for the reader to be presented with so many case studies to weigh.
It is here that the author's subjectivity becomes most apparent as he is very inclined to label those surrounded by somewhat extensive social networks be they ones of family, patients, customers, or friends as having aged well. He takes no notice of single adults or childless couples; two situations that would undoubtedly have an impact on traditional socialization. In one case he lauds as brilliant a man who has focused on the tasks of intimacy and career for the first twenty years of his adult life and then turns to generativity, or nurturing the young. One wonders if his children would appreciate the twenty years of de-emphasis on them. Frankly, it makes the development laid out by the author seem questionable.
In addition, the author demonstrates little appreciation for the atypical life chances and economic standing of the Harvard cohort. He finds it quite commendable that one-half of the Harvard cohort remained in their full-time work at age 65, failing completely to understand that the career control of doctors, lawyers, professors, and business owners and executives of the Harvard cohort far exceeds the options available to most people. He basically sidesteps the entire topic of adequate retirement income, even regarding it at one point as relatively unimportant compared to learning to play.
The author also classifies childhoods as ranging from "the Loveless" to "the Cherished." But to what effect? It is found that the negatives of childhood generally do not translate into life beyond age 50 and certainly not to longevity. In deference to general adult development textbook mode, the author makes a brief jargon-laced foray into both maladaptive and adaptive defense mechanisms that is bound to leave most lay readers just baffled.
The author frequently refers to "healthy" aging, but, again, what is it? We do learn that ancestral longevity, cholesterol levels, stress, parental characteristics, childhood temperament, and ease in social relationships do not predict healthy aging. What does predict healthy aging? Among the Harvard cohort, no alcohol abuse, no heavy smoking, and not being overweight were the greatest predictors of healthy aging followed by some exercise, a stable marriage, and then mature defenses. Among the Inner City cohort, a stable marriage was found to be the best predictor of successful aging followed by the same top three of the Harvard cohort and then by 12-plus years of education and by mature defenses. A major disconnect in the book is a discrepancy where the text claims that mature defenses ranks as the second best predictor contrary to the data displayed in charts.
So what is learned from this book? Some adults develop more or perhaps differently than others. Some adults have lives that are more social than others. Some adults are happier than others. None of that is unique to aging. It could well have a lot to do with life's circumstances that are largely outside an individual's control. We do learn that the author is somewhat judgmental concerning the quality of various individuals' lives in old age. Adults without bad consumption habits stand a far better chance of living longer than those who abuse their bodies. It probably did not take a Harvard study and a book to know most of this. Maybe the lesson is to go to Harvard and live long.

This canonical reference work, originally published in 1855, soldiers on, seeking out memorable quotations in the midst of these dark ages of rhetoric. Since the last edition in 1992, the pickings have been slim; recent selections are weighted toward bon mots from pop cultural phenomena (Jerry Seinfeld, Larry Clark, J. K. Rowling), irritating catchphrases ("Show me the money!") and laughable attempts to evade rather than achieve clear expression ("It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is"). Fortunately there is still Bartlett's great trove of five millennia of timeless poetry, prose, oratory and epigrams, arranged chronologically and indexed by author and thematic keywords. Kingsley Amis, Mother Teresa and Katharine Graham all make their first appearance in this edition, while the entries for Edith Wharton, Bob Dylan and Vladimir Nabokov have been expanded. According to his entry in American National Biography, "ask John Bartlett" was once a common answer to questions in the environs of Harvard College. Bartlett went to work in a Cambridge, Massachusetts, bookstore when he was 16, and "his copious memory and love of books soon had university faculty and students using him as a ready reference tool." His notebook of common phrases and quotations eventually became A Collection of Familiar Quotations, which he had privately printed in 1855. By the time he died in 1905, the collection had gone through nine editions. Almost 100 years and eight editions later, people still ask John Bartlett when they are seeking the source of a common phrase or hoping to dress up a speech with a pithy saying.

The seventeenth edition of Bartlett's has 25,000 quotations from 2,500 authors. It follows in the path of its predecessors by adhering to certain traditions yet also strives to remain relevant and up-to-date. Bartlett's original collection relied heavily on literary sources, such as the Bible and Shakespeare, and these, as current editor Kaplan tells us in his preface, "are still major components." Structurally, arrangement is still chronological and access is abetted by an index of authors and a very detailed keyword index. But for this edition, hundreds of "purely mechanical, nonsubstantive cross-reference and footnotes" have been eliminated, and full citations are used in place of the often-confusing Ibid. And Bartlett's continues to widen its net beyond canonical sources, casting about for material from culture both high and low. New among the quoted are Maya Angelou, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Princess Diana, Rudy Giuliani, Frank McCourt, Robert McNamara, and Jerry Seinfeld. Selections from Charles Darwin, Bob Dylan, and Virginia Woolf, among others, have been expanded. Some authors, such as popular eighteenth-century English writer Anna Laetitia Barbauld, have been excised, although cutting has not been as deep for this edition as it was for the sixteenth, also edited by Kaplan.

There are hundreds of other quotation books from which to choose. Among those that are comparable in size to Bartlett's, The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (5th ed., 1999) is arranged alphabetically by author, and Random House Webster's Quotationary (1999) is arranged by subject. In addition to these general anthologies, there are books of quotations by women and by African Americans; books of humorous or religions quotations; and books for quotations about movies or sports (for a rundown of some recent examples, see "Other People's Words: Recent Quotation Books," in our July 2002 issue). Strictly speaking, the new Bartlett's may not be a necessary purchase for libraries that have the sixteenth edition and a good array of other fairly current titles. But because it is one of the handful of reference staples that patrons are likely to ask for by name, no self-respecting library should be without it. RBB

Comparing this, the 17th edition of the best known and arguably the most authoritative collection of quotations ("familiar," memorable, or just plain quotable--you choose the terminology), to its predecessor the 16th edition, the question arises, should you upgrade? I own both books and have examined them in some detail. I have used the 16th for many years.

The 17th is set in a new typeface which is both slightly narrower and less bold than that of the 16th. The result is a cleaner look to the pages and more white space. The difference in the number of pages--1431 for the new, 1405 for the old--is slight, and a little misleading. In fact the new edition has more entries--"around one hundred" authors are quoted for the first time, and some authors have additional entries. But the text in the 17th actually takes up less room. Its Index, for example, although it has more entries, has only 564 pages to 608 for the 16th. This is accomplished mainly because the narrower type is also shorter, allowing more entries per column.

The question then is, is the smaller type harder to read? Surprisingly, I would say no. The new type is sharper, crisper and, because the pages have a cleaner appearance, is easier on the eyes. I have a strong suspicion that the publishers--whose investment in this most famous and most important reference work is considerable--tested the readability of their new type before adopting it!

Some additional space, according to editor Justin Kaplan, has been gained by the elimination of "several hundred purely mechanical and nonsubstantive cross-references." For example in the 16th on page 247 is given this quotation from Fredrich von Logau: "Though the mills of God grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding small." A footnote at the bottom of the column refers us to Euripides and George Herbert who wrote something similar. In the 17th that footnote is gone and we have no handy reference to the two earlier instances of von Logau's expression. I think this is a clear loss and not something simply "mechanical and nonsubstantive" as editor Justin Kaplan has it in his Preface to the Seventeenth Edition. (p. viii)

Okay, what about the new authors being quoted and the additional quotations by authors already present in the 16th addition? Do they constitute a significant upgrade?

This is a question difficult to answer partly because only time will tell if the new additions--many of them are so new--will really remain worth remembering. Bill Clinton's rather infamous "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is" surely will be around for a while, but film director Cameron Crowe's "Show me the money!" from his film Jerry Maguire (1997) may not seem so memorable or familiar a generation or two down the road. (Or maybe I have that backwards!) A quick way to address the question of whether the new quotations are worthwhile is to look at the last pages of entries just before the Anonymous section. Because Bartlett's presents its quotations chronologically, from the earliest (the first quote is from the Egyptian The Song of the Harper 2650 B.C.) to the latest (Sesame Street's Kermit the Frog's "It ain't easy bein' green") most of the new entries are near the back. By the way, technically speaking, Kermit the Frog's dictum is older than Cameron Crowe's movie. But that is a quibble.

Of course there are additions that are not from new authors. French mathematician, Pierre de Fermat, who does not appear in the 16th, appears here in the 17th, noting that his "truly marvellous" proof for his famous Last Theorem, will not fit into "this margin." Fermat was rediscovered by Bartlett's no doubt because in 1994 Andrew Wiles finally proved the theorem--taking considerably more than a margin to do it, by the way.

Some other authors appearing for the first time are Mother Teresa, Richard Feynman, Margaret Atwood, Princes Diana, etc. Vladimir Nabokov, Edith Wharton, Gertrude Stein and W. Somerset Maugham are among about two dozen who have had their space extended. Kaplan doesn't mention it, but there are also some deletions from the previous edition. I was particularly disappointed to find that one of the central tenets of the Vedas, from the Chandogya Upanishad, "Thou art that" was eliminated.

Also eliminated (and I think this is to the good) are the Ibid's that sometimes ran all the way down the page in the 16th. Now the title of the work is repeated.

If you don't have this reference, you really should get it or the comparable Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. See my review of that very excellent book for a comparison. Suffice it to say here, if you are an American who prefers a slight emphasis on American authors to an emphasis on English authors, you'll want to get this book.

Bottom line: no serious writer (especially of literature, culture and history) should be without this invaluable and authoritative book. Next to a dictionary it is my most consulted work of reference.

DON'T BUY THIS FOR YOUR KINDLE!!!!!

TERRIBLE formatting for the Kindle!! For example, you can't search for a phrase, since the Kindle version isn't indexed. There's no Table of Contents, and even the Contents of Authors pages aren't hyper-linked, so there's no way to even get to a specific author. I wouldn't have given it even *one star*, if I'd had that option! I have deleted it from my Kindle, and I'm glad I didn't pay much for it! What a waste!!

This kindle version is not well set up for the kindle. The search results are hard to read; the table on contents are not hyperlinked; very difficult to use and browse.

Look for a better / different version.

Kate Atkinson's Started Early Playlist

I always make a compilation tape for Jackson for each book. I find it’s rather like a meditation, something I come back to on a regular basis when I’m writing because in some mysterious way it reminds me of the essence of each particular book. He, and I, like country music but that’s quite a broad church. Sometimes it’s apparent to me why I’ve chosen certain tracks and at other times I’m not at all sure of the reason. There are a lot of songs about dead mothers and orphaned children for Case Histories and When Will There Be Good News, and more than a few about death and heaven in Started Early. (Jackson’s taste is strictly on the melancholic side.) At the moment I’m writing a book that begins in 1910 and goes through the Second World War so just now I’m listening to music from the Twenties and Thirties, rather odd and not entirely to my taste. I’m looking forward to Glenn Miller and the Andrew Sisters--not Jackson’s taste at all! --Kate Atkinson

Lee Child: This is the fourth Jackson Brodie book. It's starting to look suspiciously like a series! What brought you back this time?

Kate Atkinson: I never intended to write more than the first one -- which was Case Histories -- but I wrote it so quickly -- which was highly unusual for me -- that I somehow felt as if I hadn't finished with the form and the characters. And then it became the 'power of three' and I thought "one more" and then I found I had unfinished business for Jackson and it became four. I honestly don't know how that happened. There is something seductive about the shape of a detective novel, or at any rate of using a detective in a novel, because it gives you a ready-- made dynamic and a reason for introducing characters to whom interesting things happen as opposed to, say, starting with a whole load of people in a bank or an office and thinking so what are their stories, and what's going to happen to them? (Although, even as I'm writing that, I'm thinking oh, actually that sounds quite intriguing).

Child: Your career so far shows you're not afraid to write whatever you choose. It's as if you've been in and out of several different rooms in the house. Is that fun?

Atkinson: Yes! I get bored quite easily but also there are so many ways of writing out there to explore. To run with the house analogy -- I love houses and there are so many lovely ones that I'll never have a chance to live in because life is short and so is money. It's the same with different styles and genres of writing. I hope before I die I manage to write a romantic novel (because I never write any kind of romance) and I would love to be able to write a children's book, but I think they are the most challenging of all.

Child: Is it easier to write the Brodie books than the others? Or harder?

Atkinson: I found the Brodie books easy to begin with, and then very difficult to finish. I haven't actually finished with him yet but at the moment he's taking a holiday somewhere restful. I found the new book really hard but I think I'd just run out of steam with the character. I'm writing something completely different at the moment and it's amazing how much energy I have for it and what a relief it feels! I think the next time I re-visit Jackson it will be with that same kind of enthusiasm -- and he (and I) will be all the better for having taken a break from each other!

Child: You write about Yorkshire with a certain exasperated affection. You were born there, right?

Atkinson: I am actually a patron of the Yorkshire Tourist Board! I think it's true of everyone in exile -- I live in Edinburgh -- no matter how mild the form, that you have a longing for what you have left behind.

I think the older you get the stronger that is -- not so much nostalgia, but a feeling that your heart is in another place. I may be kidding myself there and, like Jackson, there are certain parts of Yorkshire that I would never want to re-visit, but like him I think there are places in North Yorkshire that do mark it out as God's Own county. (I don't know why Yorkshire people are so fervently patriotic about their county!) My whole family is settled in Scotland so that kind of prevents me from moving back although I dream about that little cottage in the Dales, Aga in the kitchen, sheep bleating outside the window...

"For the want of a nail..." - Atkinson is always a wonderful read

First Sentence: Leeds: `Motorway City of the Seventies'.

Spur of the moment decisions lead to life-altering consequences. A child and a dog link characters in an expected way that leads to injury and death.

Atkinson has created several mysteries within one story in this latest outing, and although Jackson is the continuing thread between the books, he is certainly not the only significant character.

One element I so enjoy about Atkinson's books is that her characters are somewhat abnormal for being no realistically normal. Brodie is an ex-cop, ex-PI with a number of failed or failing relationships. It is nice to learn much more about him and his background here. Tracy is a long way from being the attractive, sexy, young cop so common now. Tilly is an elderly actress with early dementia.

I find it almost impossible to describe this book. The writing is clever but without feeling contrived. Her voice and humor are delightful. There are coincidences, but they are deliberate and play upon the theme. The theme, which comes from the traditional poem "For want of a nail..." is brilliantly played out.

I did not find this the easiest book to read due to time and POV changes. It was a bit slow getting into, but it was never boring. I am always fascinated by Atkinson's writing and I love her titles. All I can say is that this is a book which can stand on its own and is very well worth reading.

Early start and sustained effort needed

This was a clever book with a clever, well-thought story and plot. It involved many characters, the main ones were Tracy Waterhouse, a policewoman who rescued a child, and Jackson Brodie, a private investigator who rescued a dog, and Matilda (Tilly) an old, senile actress who could hardly rescue herself. This is not an easy book to read, and certainly not one to read over weeks because one would lose focus and thus the connections that were to come together in the end. It was written with a stream-of-consciousness style of writing and so has a number of distractions thrown in which the reader has to figure out how they were relevant to the story. Furthermore, the author juxtaposed events so that one has to keep track of the dates in order to follow the clues and the story. I gave this book only three stars because it was not the kind of writing I enjoy reading; but to those who enjoy the challenge of a "warped" story and do not mind stream-of-consciousness narratives, they might give this 4 or 5 stars.

(4.5 stars) However good Kate Atkinson's three previous Jackson Brodie novels have been, they were just the warm-up for this one. Though they are often called "mysteries," Atkinson's novels are far more character-driven than the norm, and more literary in execution-intriguing on several levels simultaneously. In this novel, Jackson Brodie becomes a broader character, his inner life at least as important as the plot with which it intersects. Brodie has always had a problem with alcohol and women, with whom he has always looked for escape from some of the underlying miseries of his life. Married twice and "almost married" to a woman who fleeced him, Brodie can be forgiven for being cynical about people and their motives. The one characteristic which keeps Brodie going is his outrage about the injustices he sees around him, with his strongest calumny directed toward those who take advantage of children.

In Started Early, Took My Dog, which takes place in Leeds, West Yorkshire, several plot lines begin before the entrance of Brodie. The starving, almost dead child of a prostitute is found in an apartment with the body of the mother in 1975, and the child is later adopted. The other story lines take place in the present. Two thugs have arranged to kidnap a child in Munich. A female former police superintendent in Leeds saves a child from being abused, then offers to buy the child from the prostitute who has been dragging her through the streets. A senile actress in a TV serial witnesses something she does not understand. Amid these beginning plot lines, Jackson Brodie sees a small dog being horribly abused by a muscleman and saves the dog, which quickly wiggles its way into his life and heart.

What follows is a complex story of identity, including Jackson Brodie's own identity, as characters who were orphaned and/or adopted try to understand the past and make connections. Brodie himself has never recovered from the death of his sister Niamh, one of several deaths which decimated his family before he had even reached his teen years. Jackson becomes involved in the search for truth regarding the other plot lineswhen he is hired to try to find the parents of one of these adoptees.

Atkinson's irrepressible humor comes through in her style: She includes more literary references per page, often humorously, than most other writers have in an entire novel. These fit into the narrative so smoothly that it is easy to overlook them. In one ten-page sequence near the beginning, for example, Atkinson gives brief quotations from Cormac McCarthy, Emily Dickinson (who seems to be a favorite throughout), and Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and his Sonnet 73 on death. Birth, love, aging, and death are constant themes here as several adults, including Jackson Brodie, try to come to terms with their lives as children and find peace. Some, like Jackson Brodie, still have hope--"Hope is the thing with feathers/That perches in the soul/And sings the tune without the words/ and never stops--at all." (Emily Dickinson)

Thrilling Combination!

KILL ME IF YOU CAN combines the usual winning formula of action, suspense and glamorous international locations predominant in Patterson's novels, but with the more off-beat influence of Karp's writing which makes for a thrilling combination. During an attack on Grand Central Station on the bread-line artist, and unlikely hero, Matt Bannon stumbles across a bag of diamonds and decides to risk taking them. A cat and mouse game ensues as Matt tries to off-load the diamonds and avoid the assassin who has been sent to track him down and retrieve them.

There is a good injection of humour as well as pace and I found myself reading this in less than a day lounging by the pool. Not a cerebral challenge, but there were enough twists and likeable characters to keep me entertained and wanting to read on to see how things turn out for Matt.

Probably more Karp than Patterson, but I enjoyed it all the same, and look forward to what is undoubtedly the start of a great new series!

Reiken's Elegant Prose Will Embrace You.

`Maybe it's only trick of language, but the word life or death alone could not be understood without awareness of the other. It is the same for light and dark, for day and night, for good and evil.' [Page 196]

I believe that this book is meant to be read by mature individuals - those very people who have experienced life, questioned it, coped with adversity, and survived. If you are a young person, and by this I am referring to someone, perhaps, in his or her twenties or thirties, do read this book. However, please keep it to be read again later in life.

While reading `Day for Night, I experienced a mysterious and magical travel in time. Suddenly, I was in my paternal grandmother's kitchen. She was speaking to me in her native language, as she usually did. However, she was not saying very much for she seldom did. Everything was a mystery, and somehow, this was okay with me. I think that my childhood prepared me to understand this book.

Readers, most likely, will seek answers to the puzzles presented in `Day for Night.' I read, and I read. Then, I sobbed. I knew the answers would come to me quietly, perhaps, suddenly. Most of my questions were answered.

I do believe that if anyone is able to understand how millions of innocent people - Jewish people - could be corralled, sent to concentration camps and systematically be killed, then there are no mysteries.

In `Day for Night,' the reader is informed that in 1941 five hundred Jewish [male] intellectuals are gathered together, in Kovno, thinking one thing. They may escape mass execution. Instead, they are slaughtered leaving behind families. Again, if a reader is fully able to comprehend this history, then there are no mysteries.

`Day for Night' is a boldly ambitious book written with a particular richness I have never before experienced. It contains undeniably beautiful language, as well as a passion for history and for humanity. I found this to be a profoundly emotional book --one which has the capacity to dazzle and bewitch a reader. The narrative flows like the tide with its waves cresting and then, unexpectedly, there is a temporary sense of tranquility.

There are many characters in `Day for Night.' Each of his/her stories is amazing. If you read carefully, you will find many of their connections. I absolutely loved reading about Beverly and Miriam. However, I also loved reading about Max and Doris and so many others.

`Day for Night,' in its depth and breadth surpassed any book [in this genre] that I have ever read. In many respects, it is a peerless novel, and I am certain that I will be a better reader for having read this. I thank Mr. Frederick Reiken for his understanding, his willingness to share his magical qualities.

This is a meditative novel -- be prepared to have a spell cast upon you. This is beyond a 5 star rating.

Exalting, compelling, a must-read.

The cover of the book, of a carousel submerged into an ocean, the tip visible, is a stunning metaphor of the book itself, as well as a literal scene in one of the book's early chapters. It represents our continuing, revolving narratives, partly hidden from our consciousness, the ocean a repository of life and death, a connection to all. The horse is totemic, an aid to self-discovery and understanding of our past, as well as glimpses into our future.

The title is undoubtedly taken from Francois Truffaut's superb movie, whose theme is that movies are more important than life for those that make them. In the book's context, it is the narratives that make up our lives. And what are narratives but the integration of the deepest memories that have broken up like shards and scattered, or hidden in our deepest and repressed recesses? Our narratives don't exist in isolation; the stories travel, the voices make up our universal experiences and nourish our shared humanity. We are a latticework of voices.

Reiken's novel consists of ten narratives. In each one, a character is brought into focus, their individual story highlighted. Most characters reappear in several of the other narratives, sometimes in the background, or in counterpoint, or even as a parallel. The core story underpinning all of the narratives is a story of survival during the Holocaust. Five hundred Polish-Jewish men in Soviet-occupied Lithuania were promised jobs as intellectuals, as archivists. When they assembled, they were killed. The story has taken on a fable-like history, the fable being that two of the men have survived. These two men are related to the present-day narrators in some way, either directly or through six degrees (or less!) of separation.

Reiken writes with such a natural ease that the connecting lip into deeper consciousness is fairly imperceptible. You start out on the surface of things and spool almost dreamily, tranquilly into penetrating waters. The construct is Jungian and his concept of the collective unconscious is illustrated through the psyches of the narrators and their overlapping stories.

The motifs/symbolism is ripe and transcendent. The Shadow self (which Jung describes as the repressed/suppressed aspects of the conscious self that often appears in dreams as a dark figure) is particularly expressed and explored by different characters, but is centered on Beverly, whose father was one of the five hundred men "lost." It is this Shadow self that stalks her and forces her narrative to emerge more fully into the open and connect with other narrators.

This novel is unputdownable. It winds around the reader so effortlessly and pulls you down, down, down into the heart of mercy, of kindness, of compassion. Secrets and guilt are often toxins that prevent us from knowing ourselves and understanding our lives fully, and divide us from each other. How do we begin to love, and how do we forgive?

All of us with our separate narratives are part of a deeper, richer narrative, a story much larger than we know. "Only later did I realize that the question the story caused me to ponder more than any other was that of what it takes to find a thing that's hidden, a thing that lurks within whatever it is you're staring at each day. Perhaps the meaning of the story is that you must look deep rather than far if you want to unlock any of the secrets of the universe, that once unlocked a secret loses its power unless a part of it is withheld."

If this novel does not move you uncommonly, I would be surprised. If you are not astonished by the beauty and elegance and immeasurable compassion of this book, I would be confounded. What is this book about? It is about everything. Who is it for? It is for everyone.

Coincidences and Connections

Take a woman vacationing in Florida ... and her wildlife guide there ... and his band's female lead singer ... and her comatose brother -- and when you finally look up you'll discover you've followed Frederick Reiken's tangent-filled narrative nearly 100 pages into his terrific third novel. And you haven't yet gotten to a half-dozen other interesting characters.

DAY FOR NIGHT is a literary mystery of coincidences and connections. Its ten chapters (each nearly a short story) are told from different points of view, exploring characters' deep backstories and linking them into a growing story in progress. It calls to mind the TV series Lost and the film Crash -- the chains of events that lead people to meet and interact and discover amazing things.

I liked pulling back and considering how the stories were building and how they might all be brought together. And I liked being on each page -- traveling around the USA and to Poland and especially Israel with characters I cared about; spending time in nature and with animals; and exploring an aspect of the Holocaust that I'd not previously encountered. Highly recommended.

Be prepared, readers. CLASSIC, the tenth IT GIRL novel, is the final chapter in the series, according to the back of the book.

Jan Plan is ending and the gang at Waverly is finally coming off probation. After the crazy party that went totally awry at the Dean's house in the last novel, the students have basically been on house arrest with little contact between the sexes. The school term is just about to begin, and Valentine's Day is only a week away.

Waverly has an annual tradition of Perfect Match. Each student fills out a questionnaire and is paired with their "perfect match" for a week of games and activities, culminating in the Valentine's Ball. Of course, everyone expects to be paired with their ideal mate, but nothing ever goes as planned.

Tinsley gets paired with the male mirror image of herself. Brandon filled his questionnaire out the way he thought Callie would answer hers, only to find he's been paired with the most un-Callie girl on campus. Callie is torn between two boys, one of which wasn't supposed to be back at Waverly. Brett watches as her boyfriend flirts openly with Isla Dresden. And Jenny doesn't understand why Isaac Dresden pulls back every time Valentine's Day is mentioned.

CLASSIC is actually a little lighter in feel than some of the others in the series. Yes, there are the hijinks, crazy ups and downs in the romance department, and plotting and scheming. But with the "Perfect Match" story in the background, the mood is fluffier and more easy going.

I absolutely couldn't believe it when I read the back cover and saw that it said this was the final installment of the IT GIRL series. If you're like me, I found the series sinfully addicting and compulsively readable. I will miss all the drama at Waverly Academy. I'm sad to say goodbye to Jenny, Calllie, Brett, Tinsley and the rest of the gang. I felt like I knew them intimately.

But, on the other hand, I'm not fully convinced we won't be seeing them again sometime. The school year has ended, and Jenny has survived her first year at Waverly. Maybe in the future we'll see her returning to school for another year? One can hope.

No. Just...NO.

The It Girl novels 1-10 are numbered from 1 - best to 10 - worst, in my opinion. I usually find them a light, fun read aside from the hollow product placements, but although I know this stuff isn't supposed to be Shakespeare plot-wise, what drives me CRAZY is the lack of character consistency. A 'last book' is supposed to tie up loose ends and make you feel full and satisfied, like a cup of Les Mariages Freres Wedding Imperial tea. I hate how the books seem to forget what went on in other books: okay, so changing hair colour is forgivable but effing up plotlines is not. From simple things (Brett was not caught cheating in 'I Never') to the larger (we expound and invest in Tinsley and Julian's relationship for books and books to end up with...?) and so on and so forth. For all the series' breathy whispers of 'There can only be one It Girl...' the question is never answered. But at least that's some sort of consistency - we never found out who Gossip Girl was, either. Oh, and if you didn't hear me mention Jenny in my review, well, I actually didn't. I only ever read the books for the other characters - I couldn't give two number two's for Jenny, whose story is always the same. But for me, the most unforgivable sin is the fact that Brandon would end up with a frumpy girl he showed absolutely no inclination for except in the book's final few seconds, and not even try to MAKE HER OVER. Brandon has an entire Sephora plus OCD at his disposal, this would NEVER happen.

This is for sure the worst book in the series,normally I can finish these books in a couple hours because they are hard to put down,but this one took a couple week. the only reason i read it was because i have read the whole seies. so,if you`ve followed the entire series it`s still a must read but definatly prepare for a disapointing end!!!!!

This ambitious work, produced in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, is the book equivalent of a museum tour. Each spread investigates a different aspect of the Holocaust: the rise of the Nazi party, the Wannsee conference, the murder of the mentally ill, persecution of homosexuals and gypsies, and the destruction of the Jews. While unusually comprehensive, the text does not dominate the book. Thoughtfully chosen, uncommon documentary photographs overwhelm the pages with their pathos and horror (a woman, sitting on a park bench marked "for Jews only," hides her face from the camera; grinning children pose shortly before their mass execution in a Lithuanian shtetl; a killing squad trains its rifles on a Soviet Jew perched above a ditch filled with corpses). Individual experience is literally marginalized here, as the experiences of 20 young persons are telegraphed episodically alongside the body of the text. There is much to compel thought, but there is little attempt at synthesis-rather, each entry, textual or illustrative, seems to compete for the reader's attention. Ages 10-up.

Grade 5 Up-Intended to extend the experience of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum beyond its walls, this book reproduces some of its artifacts, photographs, maps, and taped oral and video histories. Many of them are from archival collections in the museums of Germany, the Netherlands, England, and Poland, as well as those in the United States. The book is divided into three sections: Germany before and during the Nazi regime; the final solution, including the ghettos; and rescue, resistance, and liberation. Bachrach makes the victims of Hitler's cruelty immediate to readers, showing that, like readers, they were individuals with hobbies and desires, friends and family. Two interesting devices are used to generate emotional involvement. The first is an attractive "cast of characters," guileless young people whose pictures, taken from their identity cards, smile innocently out from the page and in other photographs, enjoying life. The second is to insert these same identity cards and photos of life before Hitler into the narrative of destruction so that readers can trace what is happening to the young people at different points in the Holocaust until their death or the war's end. Thus, this is a very personal approach to Holocaust history and a very effective one.

This photo-history, produced in association with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, focuses on what happened to young people whose world of family and friends, school and play, was destroyed. More than 30 short, accessible chapters cover the general history, including the rise of Hitler, the ghettos, the transports, the camps, the gas chambers, and the movements of resistance and rescue. Sidebars tell the ongoing stories of individual young people and show their ID photos; some of the individuals are pictured several times during the period 1933-45, but many don't survive. The writing is direct, with no histrionics or gimmicks. A wealth of material drawn from the museum's large collection of photographs and taped oral and video histories supports the facts. The systematic murder is confronted here. We're told of the brutality, the medical experiments, and the corpses stacked up like cordwood, and there are pictures of the death marches and the gas chambers. The Jews were the main target of Nazi hatred, but throughout the book, Bachrach also talks about other groups and individualsincluding Gypsies, homosexuals, and the disabledwho were marked as enemies of the state. The book's design is clear, with a spacious chronology at the back, a long bibliography, subdivided by genre and reading level, and an appendix of population figures by country. This is one of the best books available for introducing the subject to young people and an excellent text for the Holocaust curriculum now required in many states. Hazel Rochman

Education to those not knowing

This book explains the depth the Nazis went to get rid of whole nationalities,races and religions. It teaches readers young and old of how awful the circumstances where and how some survived. They have beautiful pictures, and vivid accounts of survivors. I would recommend this for schools and young children. Some children dont see the importance of this and they will learn that they should not repeat this cruel history, we teach them to learn from past mistakes to prevent the end of the future.

This book gives a good explanation of the Holocaust with pictures and everything. I've read many a Holocaust book and this one is one of the best so if your looking for a Holocaust book look no more this is the one.

This book was very information-packed and very well-done.

I am a fifth-grader who is reading this book for a book report on the Rebecca Caudell Awards book list. This book is very informational about the Holocaust and tells things in a very detailled way, not a broad way as in some books. The book told what happened at the camps and what happened in the ghettos. I think that the book was very well done and the chronology and the glossary were both done very well. The stories of the people who suffered really made an impact on me. Most of the stories were very short but some of them were long and I think that they were important.
