In this enlightening book, Powell, a British scholar and professor, sets out to explain how we experience music. He selects examples from all manner of disciplines--music composition, simple mathematics, physics, engineering, history--and offers his insights, such as how Bach' s Prelude in C Major is similar to Led Zeppelin' s Stairway to Heaven. In the first half, he defines the elements of music like pitch, frequency, harmony, rhythm, and decibel. Building on this foundation, Powell hits his stride in the book' s second half as he demonstrates, using both classical and pop music, how musicians create sound and how we listen to it. Some of the information can get scientific but Powell conveys the material with enough humor ( I think the decibel was invented in a bar, late one night, by a committee of drunken electrical engineers who wanted to take revenge on the world for their total lack of dancing partners ) and cocktail party facts ( when we listen to Mozart' s music nowadays, we are hearing it a semitone higher than he would have intended ) to keep the book light and fun. Included in the book is a 10-track CD.

John Powell holds a PhD in physics from Imperial College at London University. He has taught physics at the University of Nottingham and the University of Lulea in Sweden. In 2003, he earned a master's degree in music composition from the University of Sheffield in Great Britain.

This is a must read book for anyone who loves music

I have always had an aptitude for and interest in science. I am a medical student and am interested in the human brain and how we as humans see the world and interact with our environment.

One thing that I love perhaps as much as science is music. I find it possibly the single best cure for emotional disturbance, especially stress of any kind and have often wondered why this is?

I have noticed that music can have a profound affect on mood and state of mind. Sometimes it brings about nostalgia attached to a memory that I doubt I would remember without the auditory cue. Sometimes it makes me so happy that I walk down the street with my headphones in my ears grinning at passers by, and sometimes it simply brings tears to my eyes. It is certainly a very emotive tool and science in its own right.

When I discovered the book `How Music Works' by John Powell I thought to myself `this might be worth a read!' I certainly was not wrong.

This book does what it says on the tin really. The author uses a scientific approach to explain exactly how music works, without isolating the lay person. He uses examples and analogies we can all relate to, to explain concepts in a logical and understandable manner without compromising on detail and depth of explanation, which in my humble opinion is quite a skill.

The style of writing is witty and light hearted so this book makes for an entertaining as well as interesting and informative read. Several times I found myself subject to a few funny looks on the tube as I laughed out loud whilst reading the book on my daily commute. I also found my self thinking `ok so now I get it!' and listening to music between chapters to put my new found knowledge to the test and matching the newly found concepts in the book to the notes, chords, scales and harmonies I was listening to!

The book covers all aspects of music and the way that it works, including explanations about different instruments and how they create the sound that they do, harmony, scales, the difference between notes and noise, and yes there is physics behind why these differ, why music evokes different emotional responses, rhythm, perfect pitch... and so on! Basically everything you could possibly want to know about the in's and out's of this thing we call music.

Chapter 2 explains what perfect pitch is and also provides the reader with a quick and easy way of assessing whether they themselves have perfect pitch. It's great! You never know, you could have what it takes to be the next Madonna or Michael Jackson.

Chapter 6, how loud is loud is interesting. It explains the system that we have come up with over the years for measuring loudness which is more complicated than you may first think. It also explains why ten instruments sounds only twice as loud as one and why one hundred instruments only sounds four times as loud as one. Yes that's right, it's true. We don't like that though do we? It doesn't make sense. Well as the author correctly points out, six smelly socks aren't six times as smelly as one, and ten salted peanuts in your mouth aren't five times as salty as two (even though you have five times as much salt on your tongue.) After reading this chapter you will see why simply adding more instruments to existing instruments does not add loudness proportionately. The explanation for this involves both the way that sound waves join together as well as why our brains don't add up sounds properly. This, interestingly, relates to survival the avoidance of danger. Our brain will choose what it pays attention to based on how threatening it assesses the noise to be.

This book is well written, well illustrated, entertaining and informative. I whole heartedly recommend it as an excellent read for anyone - whether you're a musician or scientist or both or even if you're neither and just love a good tune! Enjoy.

Utterly fascinating! (And what to know BEFORE studying music theory)

Disclaimer: I have no musical talent, either real or imagined.

I have read books on music theory, and I always found them lacking. WHY do we have an octave (octave=eight) that contains twelve tones? WHY are there whole steps between all notes except for B & C and E & F? WHY do we pick out, seemingly arbitrarily, seven of the twelve tones in an octave and call them a scale? `How Music Works' answers those questions, even though I never expected it to. For the first time, music theory begins to make sense! It is not enough for me to know something IS, I want to know WHY. Now I do. If that were the sole contents of the book, it would be worth what I paid for it at the local bookstore. But `How Music Works' contains much, much more.

`How Music Works' provides a scientific definition of what music is, in very understandable terms. The author describes how a string produces sound, and how we generally are listening to furniture with most stringed instruments. He explains why different instruments produce different voices at the same tone and how various instruments physically produce their sounds. This is why I purchased the book. If this were the sole content of the book, it would be worth the retail price I paid for it. But `How Music Works' contains much, much more.

`How Music Works' also delves into the tricky phenomenon of how we humans perceive sound, both from the standpoint of the sound itself, and of our hearing system. Here is also where the science of Western music is so elegantly described in easy to understand terms. Ever wonder WHY if a major scale and a natural minor scale (e.g. C Major and A minor) contain exactly the same notes, WHY they sound so different? The answer is in `How Music Works.' I've never seen that anywhere else, particularly not In music theory books.

`How Music Works' then describes musical notation, and lots of other stuff, including analog and digital recordings, CDs and MP3s, and more. The book is chock full of anecdotal, historical, and scientific tidbits that are in and of themselves astounding; I kept interrupting my wife--who was also reading--and saying, "Let me read this to you!" Not only is the book a page turner that is difficult to put down--yes, it is that engrossing--but it is full of humorous remarks that are very natural, unlike the sometimes strained humor of a certain series of books for dummies. I laughed out loud often while reading `How Music Works'.

After reading this book, I am so elated with my new understanding of music that I am delving into music theory again (now that I understand the WHY behind what IS), and I am breaking out my chromatic harmonica again. I also ordered a melodica (a.k.a. keyboard harmonica) to better play simultaneous notes and see the relationship of music on a keyboard. `How Music Works' convinced me that anyone can successfully make music with practice. That alone was worth the price of the book.

Did I mention the CD? No? That's because I haven't listened to it yet. I love to read, but I'm not good with recordings so much. Here is what is on the CD: 1) How to get different sounds from a guitar string. 2) Can you guess what this instrument is? 3) Why some notes clash and others get along together. 4) Different ways to accompany a tune. 5) Ancient and modern scales. 6) 3000-year-old music--ancient harp tuning. 7) The horrible out-of-tune bamboo whistle. 8) Confident majors and emotional minors. 9) How to bring tears to the eyes of the audience. 10)The magnificent drinking straw oboe. All of these things are well described in the text; the CD is for those who like to hear what is described. (I'm more visual than auditory.)

All in all, I highly recommend this book (and CD). It is easily worth the full retail price many times over. It is such a bargain at the Amazon price that I cannot think of anyone who shouldn't read it and enjoy it. Anyone with a passing interest in music or a passing interest in physics, or a passing interest in mathematics will enjoy it--and it isn't necessary to know anything about any of those disciplines to enjoy it. This one is well worth your time. Buy it. Read it. You will not regret it.

Decent, readable, great for some things but MISLEADING regarding tuning

This is a great accessible book in many ways. Its discussion of instrument acoustics is very clear. With some changes, I would have given it five stars. Unfortunately, the bias about equal temperament is really problematic. Most readers are not equipped to question any of his claims, so it really is unfortunate that Powell actually teaches some incorrect things. His explanation of tuning the pentatonic and major and minor scales is simplistic and wrong.

He uses simple ratios to point out how basic the scales are, but he explains how to get to those ratios in ways that actually have basic mathematical errors. If you use his tuning methods, you will end up at a different tuning than he says you will because his math is simply incorrect. He ignores the details of this because he clearly thought it was just too complex for his intended readers. He appears to be convinced that the compromised equal tempered tuning is the be-all end-all solution for music.
Other ideas are culturally-biased as well. He claims that the goal overall is to be able to transpose and modulate songs among different keys... but most music in most cultures in most of history doesn't care about that. He inserted that goal because it makes his explanation much simpler to claim that ancient Greeks cared about modulation and transposition, even though there's no reason to believe that.

But many sections of this book are superb, and overall it is a worthwhile read (though it's the sort of thing you should be happy getting from your local library, rather than buying it)

Wait...isn't Arthur a popular character in a pre-school show? Imagine my surprise when Arthur had fun at his birthday playing spin the bottle. Spin the bottle? Isn't that a kissing game? Not age appropriate for this age group!

It's cute

I've started reading Arthur's books to my sons and they love the colorful pictures in the book. The storyline is cute ~~ nothing spectular or exciting. Arthur invites everyone to his birthday party only to find out one of his friends, Muffy, has her birthday party the same day. Arthur decided to surprise Muffy by hosting the party at his house and all ends well.
It's a cute story though I am not quite sure about "Spin the Bottle" gift at the end. That may be a little too old for 8 year olds. But it's not offensive or anything ~~ it's just a cute story about birthday parties.

Arthur and Muffy are such good friends that Muffy doesn’t invite Arthur to her birthday ...

Arthur and Muffy are such good friends that Muffy doesn’t invite Arthur to her birthday party, so Arthur inadvertently plans his for the same afternoon. Also, being eight years old and living in the same town their entire lives, in the same classes with the same friends and appearing in several books together, this birthday party scheduling conflict has apparently never come up before.

Totes obvs, the boys all want to go to Arthur’s party and the girls all want to go to Muffy’s. (This is when I stopped reading for a second to reinforce to my daughter that there was absolutely nothing wrong with her having mostly boys at her recent birthday party. They were friends having fun at a party and that’s what’s important.) Francine, who normally grates on my nerves, becomes the voice of reason, wanting the two parties to come together—although that reason is so they can all play spin the bottle. (I stopped again to explain this is a silly game that big kids play so they can try to kiss each other. “Kissing is gross!” “Well, sometimes, yes it is.”)

Muffy insists she can’t change her party because the rock band and the clown have been booked for ages. Arthur can’t change his because family is coming in from Ohio for it.

Maybe Muffy and Arthur should have handed out the invitations earlier than three or four days before their parties, especially if so many plans had been in place for so long already?

In one charming bright spot in this story, Arthur and Francine hatch a plan to bring the two parties together.

But instead of having it at Muffy’s mansion on, I kid you not, Nou Veau Riche Drive, with the rock band and the clown, they have it at Arthur’s small house, where his mom grumbles about it. It’s totally the best idea ever to have the party together but there’s no mention about how Muffy’s parents feel after losing their deposit on the unused rock band and clown.

Starred Review. During the Vietnam War, Tiger Force was the code name of an elite platoon of the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry. Its pedigree was impeccable. The battalion's executive officer, Maj. David Hackworth, organized the 45-man volunteer force in 1966, and it became one of the war's most highly decorated units, paying for its reputation with heavy casualties. But for seven months beginning in May 1967, Tiger Force descended into a moral abyss. Operating in what was defined as enemy country, the platoon engaged in an orgy of atrocities that ranged from taking ears, scalps and teeth to the mass killing of unarmed civilians. Conservative estimates count victims in the hundreds. From 1971 to 1975, the army mounted an investigation that documented the crimes, but decided "nothing beneficial" could result from prosecuting the platoon members or their leader. War Crimes and WAR CRIMES.... A view from the 2nd of the 327th

In 1966 volunteered for the draft and then for the airborne. I arrived in Vietnam in November 1967, and was assigned to the 101st Airborne, 1st Brigade, 327th, 2nd Battalion, Charlie Company, 3rd Platoon -- the "3rd Herd." I was the medic -- "Doc Quinn." I was wounded in A Shau Valley on March 21, 1968 and left Vietnam for good a month later. I grew up in the military, spent 5 years in Asia by the time I was 13 years old, got jungle survival training from the 1st Special Forces attached to my Boy Scout Troop in Okinawa in 1960-61 (training that helped make Vietnam the best camp out I ever had). That was when I first heard of a place they called "Indochina."

When I joined my platoon I heard stories of atrocities committed by people in our division, including rape and murder. These stories were told in matter-of-fact ways. I don't remember if particular units within the 101st were named.

The 1st Battalion had the Tiger Force. My 2nd Battalion had the Hawk Recons, the 502nd had the Recondo's. All were elites within elites and spirited units. I remember the day that orders came down that the Hawks had to give up their boonie hats and wear steel pots like the rest of us non-recon types. They went on "strike" for a few hours, burned off a lot of ammo into the hills to make their feelings known, and, finally, kept their boonie hats and the issue was forgotten.

When I read some of the original articles that were later reshaped into "Tiger Force," I thought -- so, that was where some of those rumors were coming from.

No one in my platoon, during my four months tenure with it in the field, committed any war crimes that I am aware of. In fact, they seemed quite a decent lot of very young men. On Christmas Eve, 1967, toward sunset, while lying on my back reading a book in an area known as Phan Thiet, all hell broke loose and then all was quiet. Several innocent mountain people, all young males & none armed, were killed when they, to their fatal surprise, walked in on our perimeter. The M-60 gunner responsible for their deaths, told me they walked up on him in single file, five yards apart -- a classic sign of a military column. He reacted fast as he was trained to do. He was deeply shaken by what he had done. If he's alive, he probably still is.

One fellow in our company, I learned, was thoroughly disliked when he'd drop by our platoon for a little bull-jive and coffee -- the company sniper. He wasn't liked, I was told, because he was a cold blooded killer.

During one of our operations right after Tet '68, in the Hue region, word came from the Company Commander that he did not want us to be quite so hesitant when we "suspected" the enemy was on us. He had earlier told us to use greater caution because we were operating in a very populated area, but our caution led to our gunner, Gibbs, getting an AK round in the chest.

That night or the next day, we heard that the sniper, acting "less hesitantly," shot a grandmother and her granddaughter at point blank range. The people around me were disgusted. Rumor had it the Company Commander was angered.

The story in Tiger Force is about war crimes. The men responsible should have been charged. More importantly and even less likely to have happened, the officers responsible for them should have been charged, at least exposed.

As awful as the Tiger Force rampage was, as awful as My Lai, et al, was, the truly stupendous, systematic, and policy driven atrocities of the Vietnam War was not mainly the work of us kids with guns -- as real, as awful, as that was when it was cold blooded murder -- as shown in this fine piece of research. The real atrocities began with the routine and relentless use of 105mm & 155mm howitzers, helicopter gunships, Puff-the-Magic Dragons - fixed wing aircraft mounted with gatling-guns, the F-4 Phanthom jets and their 20mm gatling guns, the B-52's, the USS New Jersey's 16 inch guns, etc, etc -- in short, the American Way of War: high fire-power combined with vague, liberal rhetoric. I saw it all and am still appalled.

P.S. The reviewer who identified himself as a Tiger Force medic -- why not give your name? Soldiers, current or ex, are not afraid to say who we are and speak from our name. To claim you never saw any dead except in uniform I find suspect, along with other things you write.

First-Rate Military Epic

In 1967, I was part of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade in the Quang Tin province and I can say without a doubt that the rumors about the Tigers were always making the rounds. I took the time to read the book for several reasons, some of which I will share. Shortly after the articles appeared in the newspapers and Internet in 2003, I had to make a trip to Washington DC, so I stopped at the National Archives in suburban DC to research this investigation -- or at least get what I could. I spent three years as a librarian/researcher after the war (it's about the only thing I could do at the time), so I pulled all the records of the Coy Allegation, or the Tiger Force case. I know that many of the records are missing, but I did manage to read the entire case file in a day and a half. The book not only accurately portayed the case, but added significant context that the reports do not. Few people realize how badly General Westmoreland wanted to control the central highlands. He would have done anything at the time (1967). We were erroneously led to believe in what was known as the "Scissors Theory." That if somehow South Vietnam was severed, we would not be able to mobilize troops to the DMZ. First, we relied totally on air support, so I find it difficult to believe we would lose the war because our infantry would somehow not be able to move northward if the VC or NVA managed to take control of those strategic provinces. There's no question the 1/327 was used in our ridiculous strategic hamlet program, and for anyone to say otherwise is a liar and a fool for trying to pass on such nonsense. The Tigers were a part of the 1/327. After reading the case file, it was clear the investigators found probable cause against many of the soldiers. These soldiers were already afforded opportunities to hire lawyers -- this is in the records. I want to commend the authors for the great work on this book and sharing this with the country at a time we need to hear these things. A special thanks for showing compassion to the soldiers and explaining why soldiers go wrong and what happened to the Tigers. A great job. There are going to be some people -- mostly vets -- who will cast aspersions, but who have no room to talk. They need to acknowledge what happened so that these events don't happen again.

A Thriller

I was a bit suspect of this book for many reasons when I bought it at Barnes and Noble. So many of the soldiers aren't even around anymore. The events were more than three decades ago. A lot of ghosts. But after finishing this work, I'm not disappointed. This is a great book -- one, I believe, that should be read by all students of military history. This is a lesson on what can go wrong in war and why we need to carefully assess why we choose to go into armed conflicts. First, my concerns witht he book were put aside when I saw that the authors drew on investigative transcripts of interviews with the soldiers by Army agents -- a lot of interviews over many years. Then I saw that so many of the former grunts were still alive. I guess it's fair to say Tiger Force was a very special unit and I believe anyone who belonged to this squad should be proud. They were the elite in Vietnam. But there's no question that things went really, really bad in 1967. When the brainy generals in Vietnam decided to turn these guys loose on civilians they might as well have been brewing a recipe for a bomb. I still question why would the Army take intense, bush killers and mix them in with Vietnamese farmers and not expect the worst? This is why hundreds of Vietnamese civilians died from this platoon. What I liked about the book was that it showed how the men began crossing over -- one by one, sometimes very painfully. The authors did a great job of telling the story through the soldiers. In some ways, it's very sad. On another level, it's a story that needs to come out. Tell the truth and learn from it.

An important story

I picked up Bitter End with no clue about it's theme or story, I just knew that I loved Jennifer Brown's previous novel Hate List so much that this one had to be good. It did not disappoint. Bitter End is the tale of a young girl named Alex who falls in love with Cole, the new boy at school. The story of their relationship is filled with violence, guilt, despair and even love. It's a powerful novel that I wish I could make every young girl read before they start dating. There are valuable lessons to be learned here as the author takes an almost textbook look at the characteristics of an abusive relationship.

Alex is a well rounded character, and even though she comes from a troubled family, the author has taken great pains to establish her as a fairly typical teen. Her two best friends play an important role in the story, and serve to point out that even though Alex has a support system in her life, she still falls into some pretty common traps. Any teen reader will easily be able to see a bit of themselves in these characters. It will perhaps make them uncomfortable as it will cause many to re-think their attitudes of "this could never happen to me".

If I have any complaint about this novel, it's that it gets off to a rather slow start as the author works to establish her characters. It took me a while to get to know Alex, and I really didn't understand some of her feelings concerning her mom and dad until pretty much the end of the book.

In sum, this is an important story that succeeds in dealing with the issue of domestic violence in a way that places it firmly in a realistic teen universe. Alex is a great character, and her struggles are heartbreaking and honest. The story is never heavy handed simply because of Alex's strong, authentic narrative voice. We get a ringside seat here to witness a catastrophic relationship and Brown lets us follow it unflinchingly to the bitter end. Recommended.

Not recommended

My younger sister actually checked this book out of the library because she likes darker YA. Although she didn't like this, I decided to give it a try because I knew how acclaimed Jennifer Brown's Hate List was. Well, I should have listened to my sister.

The relationship between main character Alex and her abusive boyfriend Cole was well-done. Alex is vulnerable and craving love after the death of her mother and the splintering of her family. Cole seems charming and also a product of a broken home, meaning that they seem to understand each other. Cole loves her poetry, she loves his music, and everything seems great. Except of course for my feelings of dread as I knew the book was about an abusive relationship.

Besides the inherent brutality of a physically abusive relationship, which was very hard to read (I may have done some skimming), these kinds of books are hard for me to read because I want to believe that people can change, that mistakes are made but also learned from. But Cole has been an abuser in at least three relationships and seems unlikely to change, which is just so sad to see in a human being. As you may be able to see, I wanted to like Cole because he did have the ability to be very charming even as his true colors were revealed. And he did have make some good points.

Because I agreed with Cole about Alex's friends-they suck. They are immature and annoying. It seemed like they were friends because they had all lived next to each other and had known each other for ages; are proximity and history really good reasons to be friends? Bethany was shockingly nondescript for someone who is supposed to be a best friend. I could not form a picture of her and I would forget about her whenever she wasn't around.

Meanwhile Zach was so annoying, way too flirty, and from what the book showed, obviously in love with Alex. Why was he always trying to tickle and touch her? Obviously Cole's expression of his uncomfortableness with Zach was taken too far but I would have been uncomfortable with such a flirty relationship between my boyfriend and his female friend. Additionally Zach finds out early about some of Cole's bad traits but instead of trying to have a sober conversation with Alex, he attempts to threaten Cole and just tells Alex that Cole's a jerk. Nothing to support that accusation and it did make Zach look like the bad guy. I think there's a problem when the reader hates the friends who are supposed to help the abusee more than the actual abuser.

This book just did not work for me; I would recommend Stay by Deb Caletti and especially Dreamland by Sarah Dessen for a superior reading experience (My sister, also agrees with me on these recommendations-so that's two of us urging you to read these other books.)

Well documented

I have been looking forward to Jennifer Brown's next novel since I read Hate List. Brown's best writing quality is her uncanny ability to get into the head of a character in an unthinkable situation. Hate List proved this.

This time, Brown took on the character of a girl who is physically abused by her boyfriend. Knee-jerk reaction is that a person who continues to return to an abusive man must be weak or have a lot of issues with self-esteem which would be easy to judge if one didn't understand the abuse cycle which includes gaining trust, alienation of others, abuse, sorrow, honeymoon and so on. Brown does an exceptional job with Alex's character as she is attracted to Cole, sports superstar and beautiful specimen who tells her how beautiful and perfect she is no matter what she does. But, like a good abuser, Cole has jealousies. He can't stand to see Alex with anybody else but himself. Alex feels caught yet strangely adored and starts to make sacrifices. She's in love with Cole. She loves Cole. Cole loves her. The changes in her social scene are subtle and slow but definite.

The abuse doesn't start as definite, though. It's a grip that's a little too tight that leaves welts, a small act of cruelty accompanied with complete apathy then builds from there. When someone sacrifices so much for a relationship, admitting the abuse would be a bitter pill to take. Brown also includes the familial connection.

Very well written and researched. Excellent book for teenage girls.

Carey Goldberg has been Boston bureau chief of the New York Times, Moscow correspondent for the Los Angeles Times, and most recently a health-and-science reporter at the Boston Globe. She now writes happily at home. Beth Jones is a freelance writer and educator who has contributed to the Boston Globe, New York Times, and numerous academic journals. She plans to climb many more frozen waterfalls. Pamela Ferdinand is an award-winning freelance journalist and former reporter for the Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Miami Herald. I'll be honest---well written, but the woman annoyed the heck out of me

If I were not trying to be honest here, I'd say this book was uplifting and heartwarming---a tale of lucky and devotion and friendship and children, one that will inspire many. And maybe it will inspire many, IF they are the "right" kind of women. By that I mean women that these three could relate to---highly educated, with "meaningful" careers, rich (although they would be the first to tell you they aren't rich, just comfortable, but if you can afford a nanny and a house in Boston's suburbs and constant trips around the world, you are RICH), interesting in a intellectual way...if you meet all those qualifications, you might really, really like this book. I don't, and I didn't.

The basic story---3 women around 40 want kids. They don't have the right men. One of them gets a vial of sperm from a donor. Through a complicated series of meeting men and chance, the vial gets passed on twice. In the end---well, I won't give it away, but it's a happy ending.

What bugged me was that these women, by their own life choices, created this situation, but then felt very, very entitled to have the perfect man and baby. They all put their careers first---and that's fine,but anyone as intelligent as they all are knows that close to or over 40 is not the best time to have a baby, and indeed, they find that out in very hard ways. They all want men that are like themselves, but in that, they have about 1% of men to chose from--men with "good" careers, a good education, the right kind of family---I'm pretty sure there are lots of ordinary, good-hearted men out there they would never give a second look. For friends and for men, they look for people with special, special attributes---as an example, here's a description of just a casual friend mentioned briefly "A bighearted inventor so footloose that when he turned up you never knew whether he had just been carving canoes in Africa or sailing a small craft to Cuba" --- do they even GET how few people live the lives they live?

Once they have kids, do they get either how few people have nannies and have the money for the right preschools and have all they have? One of the women goes off for a 20 day safari when her child is young. One takes their nanny along on a extended vacation. They all make life choices to move to the correct places so their children can go to the right schools. I am sure they are great kids, kind people, but I could not relate to their lives at all.

Maybe I'm being overly critical. But I wanted kids very badly too. I wanted a good husband. I got both. I have 3 great kids and a great husband. We live in the city. My kids go to public schools. We struggle sometimes to even have grocery money near the end of the paycheck cycle. We have NEVER taken an exotic vacation---we haven't taken any vacations in years. But my life is valid. Books like this make it feel like it would never even be an option to the writers. I don't have a career. I have kids. I don't have it all. But I live an interesting and full life. Believe it or not.

How many memoirs about rarefied lives of self-absorption do we need?

I was reluctant to post a review of this book because my feelings about it are so overwhelmingly negative. I have actually come to believe that the kind of tropes promoted by this book and the genre it represents--the "Eat, Pray, Love" genre of self-absorbed voyages of discovery where the other people in the author's life are mere props--are actually harming society. They make a very unusual, very unhealthy set of life choices available only to the comfortably rich seem more common and normal than they really are. They make perfectly average and nice people feel inadequate, and they sow a destructive kind of discontent. They promote a consumeristic approach to human relationships.

This book is about "successful" 40ish women who want to have babies. I would say "have a baby" is more accurate than "become mothers." Babies, here, are another accessory, an achievement to check off on some list. They feel inadequate for having reached their age without having checked "baby" and "husband" off the list. Without giving too many spoilers away, the book describes their unusually charmed--even for wealthy folks used to getting what they want--path to achieve the goals remaining on their list.

The book is made dull by how utterly unexamined their choices are, and the lack of perspective these women all share in common. They seem oblivious to the fact that they have little in common with the average woman in the USA, they seem to think their story will be some kind of "every woman" struggle that we can relate too. It's not. It's just another memoir of amoral yuppies predictably getting what they want, because they can afford to make it happen no matter the cost.

A sweet tale for the 1%

Pamela Ferdinand, Beth Jones and Carey Goldberg are busy women and very focused on what they want in life. This is their story of all their wishes.....and making them happen. business, careers, education all the things they wanted could be worked towards, could be achieved. Relationships that proved to be a far more tricky and elusive. And the dreams to one day have children? Well.....

One thing that comes through loud and clear is these three are friends, the kind of friends you want to have, friends for life and that is the engine that drives this story. That friendship sees them through disappointments and trials. That friendship also frames the quest to become mothers. Anyone who has looked tearily at another negative pregnancy test will find this story too familiar...to a point. These are three women who have financial resources and abilities that baffled me as I read. Is this really the way it is? What about the rest (most) of us who just make it day to day without the reach or finances to just order donated sperm if we want? These three women who are so blessed and able have a story, but don't seem to have a lot of insight or warmth towards the subject. The writing is stilted at times and it is hard to stayconnected. Their friendship is the best part of the book,sadly it is not enough.

Less than 12 months after last book The Turnaround Pelecanos returns with another solid, enoyable read.

When Chris Flynn & co-worker Ben find $50,000 hidden in a cut-away floorboard while fitting a carpet in an empty house they leave it there, even though the temptation is there to take it. Both have been in trouble before & met in a juvenile detention centre but are trying to go straight. Ben fatefully lets their secret out to another ex inmate, the money is stolen & the people it belongs to come looking for it.

The book, though, is really about the relationship between Chris & his father, Tommy & how it is possible to change over time & earn a second chance. There is a lot of back story regarding Chris' time at Pine Ridge correctional facility & his day to day working life for his fathers floor laying firm after his release. This is the backbone of the book & balances the missing money plot nicely.

Pelecanos has a high profile at the moment due to his work on The Wire & well deserved it is, too. More mellow these days (the punky fizz of earlier Nick Stefanos books almost gone) he can still keep readers interested in the lives of his characters by making them plausible & real. Highly recommended.

It appears I'm the first to say it - but here goes - this novel is tiresome, preachy, and predictable

It looks like I'm the first reviewer to give The Way Home less than 3 stars so clearly I'm in the minority. My grievances with this novel can be divided into two categories; matters of personal taste and issues or problems with the novel that should be universal.

On matters of taste - I'm not a fan of stories about redemption and I don't like sentimental schmaltz. The Way Home is not so much a crime thriller as it is a novel about the relationship between parents and their children and the expectations that each generation has about the importance of 'getting ahead' and 'making something of ones' self'.

I also don't care for novels that view complex issues in a one-sided manner. The Way Home climbs right up on that soap box and preaches about the inadequacies of the juvenile detention system and the need for reform. The young criminals in this novel all redeem themselves in the end. The heavy handed message is that these troubled young men need to be understood and be given a hand up. I don't disagree, but the novel is so painfully one-sided that it actually loses credibility.

Of course, there are plenty of readers who like sentimental schmaltz. If you happen to be one of them, you'll find it here. It just doesn't appeal to me.

But even if you like schmatz, there are other issues that should bother anyone expecting a suspense novel. First off, did we really need another story about someone finding a big bag of money and the bad men who want it back? I didn't think so. Talk about a worn out plot device. And Pelecanos does absolutely nothing new or remotely interesting with this dusty old nugget.

I was irritated by gaps in logic throughout the novel, but perhaps the best example was when the two young men find the money. They are installing a new carpet in a house that was bought by a real estate agent who plans to flip the property. The previous home owner died and apparently had no heirs. The money is found in a gym bag under the floor.

It would seem that there are two clear choices that a normal human being would consider: say nothing and keep the cash or report the money and turn it in to someone (their supervisor, the police, the lady who owns the house - somebody). Instead the young men put the money back under the floor and lay new carpet over top of it.

Is it just me or does that strike you as incomprehensible? Who would do that? I can't imagine anyone would. It makes no sense. It's not like the two men are rushed. They have time to discuss what they are going to do. So why do they do this? The answer is obvious. Even though no human being would actually make the choice they did - the plot demands that they do it anyway. You see, they can't take the money because Pelecanos needs to show how the men are tempted, but reformed. They need to do the right thing. But they can't turn it in because the author needs the money left under the floor so it can be stolen later by someone else with a trail that leads to your friendly neighborhood carpet installers. It's a contrivance of plot that defies reasonable human behavior and it irritates me to no end. This is only one example, but there are others.

In conclusion, even if you like schmaltz, this novel still has a tired and predictable plot riddled with holes in logic. My advice is not to read it. But then again, I'm in the minority. Take from my comments what you will. There are plenty of better novels out there to read.

Pelecanos: Am American Master

Okay, Greek-American, but whatever, George Pelecanos is one of America's best contemporary writers.
What is amazing is that he sustains the quality of his fiction while being so prolific. The Way Home is another amazing novel, featuring conflicted characters and their relationships and an impossible situation that goes from bad to worse.
The "bad guys" in this one really stood out for me. I really got a feel for them, even a liking of sorts.
The only thing I miss is some old Pelecanos characters I'd like to see show up more often...and that's not a complaint--Pelecanos creates these people who resonate with the reader, people we feel we know or could know. The author has a subtle way about his prose which is, at times, hard bitten and a nod to the genre, but to dismiss this as mere genre fiction is to miss one of the best things going in American letters.
And Pelecanos obviously has an ear to the street, from the cars, the music, the slang, everything feels right, all feels real. Another excellent book from a great American writer!
