Title: Game Over Rating: ****
Author: James Patterson ISBN: 0316101788
Genre: Fiction 221 pages

Aliens are trying to take over the world and there's only one person who can stop them. Daniel X is an orphan whose parents were killed by the most powerful alien in this, or any other, world. He is now continuing their work as alien hunters and doing his best to save the Earth. Two aliens are trying to take over the Earth by brainwashing people into killers. Daniel is determined to stop these aliens using the powers he inherited from his parents.
You see, Daniel isn't a normal kid. He was born on a different planet and was sent here with his parents to help defend earth from the aliens who would try to destroy it. Daniels race looks like humans but some are born with special powers, which is why they can become alien hunters. Daniel is a beginning alien hunter, and still has a lot to learn about how to use his powers.
When I started to read Game Over, I found it hard to put down. It had twists in the plot that took me by surprise and is a nice edition to this series. Its characters were convincing and the dialogue had me believing that I was actually listening to those people talk. Game Over teaches you that you shouldn't judge somebody by who their parents are. It also has an explosive ending that you wouldn't want to miss. Game Over is another great book by James Patterson that a casual or serious reader would enjoy.

History Made Fun
By Gail Maurice
The author has read volumes on the subject and knows most readers will never do that. She narrows the subject always with the reader in mind but not at the expense of the material. I am giving a book report for my "Monday Afternoon Club" and look forward every morning to reading another chapter. This book will increase your pride in our forefathers.

Historically accurate story of the founding of our great nation and the brilliance of our founding fathers in designing a form of government that surpassed all before it and since. Recommend without reservation.

This book should be read by every student of American history
By Larry Richardson
So you know our Constitution and the men that gave it to us huh? Well, the first reaction to this book is just how close we came to not having this amazing document. This book provides the background all Americans should know about the creation of our Constitution and the men who created it. What was to be a convention to modify and improve the Articles of Confederation ended up leading to this great document. The title says it all! What happened probably does deserve the title miraculous. Additionally, this book gives the reader insight into the men behind the Constitution. We all know something about Washington, Madison, Hamilton, Franklin, etc., but now we learn about men like Gerry, Sherman, Livingston, Wilson and many other delegates who played important roles in this work. At times the book moves slowly and wouldn't be called a "page turner". At the same time, for any student of our colonial history and the founding fathers of the American system of government, this book is a must read! Catherine Drinker Bowen has written a fantastic historical book that shouls be read in con junction with any study of the Constitution.

Some schools have honor codes.
Others have handbooks.
Themis Academy has the Mockingbirds.

From the glossy pages of its admissions brochure, the prestigious Themis Academy appears perfect in every way: exceptional academics, extraordinary students, the kind of extracurriculars to make an Ivy League proud, and zero instances of student misbehavior. But this boarding school isn't as pristine as it appears. There's a dark underbelly to the perfect record the Themis administration flaunts. Student infractions are rampant, and it's up to a secret vigilante society, the Mockingbirds, to maintain order on campus--a responsibility their members take very seriously.
Alex Patrick never thought she would need the Mockingbirds. But when she's date-raped by another student, she doesn't know where else to go. As much as she'd like to forget what happened, she can't escape the daily reminders of what went wrong that terrible night. Before she can summon the courage to take a stand, she'll have to accept that her battle for justice is not hers alone. Standing up for someone, especially yourself, is worth the fight.

From Booklist
“Silence does not equal consent. . . . The only thing that means yes is yes.” When Alex, a junior at Themis, a New England boarding school, wakes up naked in a boy’s bed, she doesn’t immediately realize what has happened during the previous drunken night. As fragmented memories return, though, she begins to understand that what happened was date rape. With the encouragement of her friends and older sister, Alex submits her case to the Mockingbirds, an underground justice system inspired by Harper Lee’s classic novel, in which Themis students investigate and try crimes committed against other students. Whitney, whose author’s note discusses her own teenage experience of date rape and its aftermath, is a seasoned journalist, and she writes with smooth assurance and a propulsive rhythm as she follows Alex through the Mockingbird’s trial process and its accompanying emotional storm of confusion, shame, fear, and finally, empowerment. Authentic and illuminating, this strong debut explores vital teen topics of sex and violence; crime and punishment; ineffectual authority; and the immeasurable, healing influence of friendship and love. Grades 9-12. --Gillian Engberg

Good debut novel
By Amazon Customer
They say to write what you know and the author's blurb says Daisy Whitney was date-raped in college. That is probably why her portrayal of the aftermath of a rape feels very real. This is the author's debut novel and it is worth reading.

After drinking too much and waking up in the room of a boy she barely knows, Alex feels extreme guilt and shame. But she listens to her friends when they convince her that even if she did drink too much, it doesn't make it okay for a boy to have sex with her while she's passed out. Alex's rapist, Carter, is a popular water polo athlete at Themis Academy. He and his friends snicker about her in class and in the common areas until Alex ends up eating her meals in her room and taking different routes to her classes. But Alex has good friends, especially her new friend Martin, who stand by her and make sure she always has an escort to classes and sometimes bring her food in her dorm room.

At Themis Academy, the students are held to high standards. The problem is, the academy seems to think that just being accepted into the school makes the students above reproach. The students don't feel like there is any real justice system. That's why, years earlier, Alex's own sister created a secret group called The Mockingbirds. Their name comes from To Kill a Mockingbird. The group consists of students of all grades and has built-in checks and balances to assure fairness. They listen to evidence and declare the defendant guilty or innocent. This system can only work, of course, if both parties agree to accept the ruling of the Mockingbirds.

Alex's roommates convince her to take her case to the Mockingbirds. In the weeks leading up to the trial Alex becomes close to Martin, her roommate's boyfriend's roommate. She never knew he was in the Mockingbirds. They develop a sweet romance as Alex slowly tries to get back to normal in the aftermath of the rape. Although it takes weeks before the 'trial' finally happens, it is over pretty quickly. I won't give away the verdict.

I liked the fact that, even though Alex felt stupid and guilty for getting drunk and going to Carter's room with him, she still had the good sense to know she was victimized and that Carter broke the law. She felt a lot of guilt, but she was sensible, too. It would have been nice if she had gone to the police, but with little or no evidence they might not have been able to help her. I think the concept of a group like the Mockingbirds is nice, but I really don't see such a thing working in real life. The idea of students policing themselves and the offenders agreeing by the decision of the Mockingbirds seems a little too good to be true.

The book had nice characters and moved quickly. Even though it had a serious subject matter, I'm glad there was a little romance sprinkled in. I would recommend this to girls aged 13 and up. I will be watching to see what Daisy Whitney does next.

Outstanding Debut
By P. Bigelow
Daisy Whitney's debut novel is an outstanding YA novel that addresses the issue of date rape.

The story is set at a boarding high school and features Alex, a junior music major whose one goal is to attend Julliard. The morning after she attends a concert with her friends, she wakes up in the bed of Carter, a member of the water polo team, and has no memory of how she got there or of what happened. It soon becomes evident that Carter had sex with her. Mortified that she had sex with a stranger and can't remember it, Alex confides in her roommates. They put the name of date rape to what happened to her. They also urge her to seek out the Mockingbirds, a student group that metes out punishment to those found guilty of breaking the school's code of conduct.

Whitney unfolds Alex's story slowly. The reader is privy to Alex's thoughts and, her memories as they slowly begin to return, usually at the worst possible times. Alex, at first, just wants to forget what happen that night, but eventually comes to understand that that she can't forget the events that occurred. To make matters worse, she must deal with the whispers of her fellow students as Carter spreads his lies about her. She must also endure her self doubts about who she is and how this could have happened. As the last bit of her memory returns, she is horrified. An understanding teacher helps her come to grips with what Carter did was wrong because Alex had not consented to what happened. As she and the Mockingbirds move forward to the trial of Carter for date rape, Alex begins to understand that not saying no doesn't mean yes.

While this story is about Alex and the effects of rape, it is also a story of the Mockingbirds and how they understand the mores of a high school campus. The Mockingbirds mete out justice in ways that the school's administration wouldn't even think of doing. How they effect the guilty party's cooperation is clever and effective.

This is a fast paced book, a real page turner, that is hard to put down even in the wee hours of the morning. Young women will love this book because Whitney doesn't sugar coat the facts nor does she dance around the issue of date rape. This should be mandatory reading for every young man.

Sensitively handled, well paced novel for teen girls and young adults.
By T. shaw
The Mockingbirds deals with a tough subject matter in date rape, but I'm glad I read it because first time author Daisy Whitney handles the subject matter with sensitivity, skill and honesty, while introducing us to a cast of well developed teen characters. It's really a story about justice as the main character Alex, hesitant to go to the authorities, seeks the assistance of a secret student society called The Mockingbirds which investigates student complaints and holds trials. In the end, what Alex really needs perhaps more than justice is regaining her sense of self, something she struggles with throughout the book as she also has to get through her junior year at an elite high school. I particularly liked the very carefully handled romantic subplot that played out post-rape and how Alex tries to overcome what has happened to her. Also the detail presented in Alex seeking solace in her music, she's an accomplished pianist, was quite lovely and touching.
The writing is tight, the plot moves along quickly and I think it's one of those YA books that will cross over to many adult female readers. This also has the feel of a potential series the way the ending is set up. It earns a five stars from me as I rated it in relation to how quickly I wanted to finish it based on the writing engaging me, how original I thought the story was and how it stacked up to other YA novels.

London is used to relying on reminder notes and a trusted friend to get through the day, but things get complicated when a new boy at school enters the picture. Luke Henry is not someone you'd easily forget, yet try as she might, London can't find him in her memories of things to come.
When London starts experiencing disturbing flashbacks, or flash-forwards, as the case may be, she realizes it's time to learn about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.

About the Author

BookWhisperer Review: Forgotten by Cat Patrick
By The BookWhisperer
A novel that will push readers to question "what if". London Lane is a very interesting girl that has to relearn her life every single day. After a traumatic experience as a child; London remembers the future, but can not retain anything from the past. This is a very intriguing concept, and readers will find their selves questioning the possibility of such an experience. Would it truly be possible for someone to survive living with no past memories? For London memories are erased every single day at 4:33 am. The only way that this young girl can force herself to remain even remotely normal is when her dedication to notes that she will have to reread every single day. As the story progresses some latent memories resurface giving readers hope for the future of this character. The story is very entertaining and will grab readers from the start. The conclusion developments anticipate a sequel the story, and what the future for London Lane will offer.

Could Have Been Better
By Annie
This book is very disappointing. It had so much potential. The plot sounded so amazing and original to me. It's too bad that it wasn't executed as well as I had hoped for. The only good thing about the book that I can think of is the plot itself.

I find the characters to be flat and boring. They don't grow or develop at the end like a typical YA novel. Of course, there is a solution the the memory problem London has, but did her character change? No. She's still the same London.

This book also has instant love, which to me is always bad. This book makes it even more unbearable because London falls in love with Luke before she even sees him. She doesn't remember the past, so she must write down what she's done in order to remind herself the next day. So, before she even sees Luke each day, she falls for him after reading her notes. I also don't see any chemistry between the two of them.

At one point, London and Luke has a huge fight. It was so bad that she decides to hide all her notes about him and tell her mom to never talk about him again. That is highly hypocritical since she basically did the same thing to him. She was being overly dramatic, but what made me roll my eyes is how she completely changes her mind and forgives him after ten to fifteen pages or so after the fight.

Taken from my blog, Never Gonna Grow Up! Reviews:

I've been having a hard time writing this review. I enjoyed "Forgotten" by Cat Patrick while reading it, but as it came to an end, I found myself disengaging from the plot line. Ms. Patrick is a very talented writer and I hate to put a negative vibe out there because as I said, I did enjoy "Forgotten", but the plot line was very ambitious and I just feel like it was missing...something. I'm not quite sure what that something is though. I enjoyed the ride and would definitely recommend it despite this weird hang up of mine.

Everyday is a new day, but we always come into it knowing what happened the day before. For London Lane though, all she has is a note. For some reason, London remembers things from her future, but not from her past. It sure doesn't make high school life or friendships/relationships easy. Talk about awkward! To top it all off, London is plagued with nightmares and she can't determine who they are about or the "when" these nightmares come from. She decides it's time to dig into her past beyond the notes and journals she keeps for herself. To quote goodreads.com, "Part psychological drama, part romance, and part mystery, this thought-provoking novel will inspire readers to consider the what-if's in their own lives and recognize the power they have to control their destinies."

"Forgotten" is such an interesting read and as I mentioned before, an ambitious concept. I really enjoyed watching London unravel her past without being able to access the memories locked in her mind. Ms. Patrick's writing is splendid. She took on a lot with this novel and I think she handled it quite well. I fell in love with the characters and the romance between our heroine and Lucas. It's just SO sweet. I absolutely love friendship based romance and this one is delightful. The book started to lose me towards the end, partially because I wanted to stay focused on Cat and her life rather than on the conflict presented. It wasn't like Ms. Patrick's writing wasn't engaging (I cannot emphasize enough that this book is so well written!). I don't know why... I'm just a weirdo.

Seriously, this book is really interesting and a great read for anyone who enjoys a good psychological drama and/or romance. It is unlike any other book on the market right now so read it for a complete change of pace. I'm sure you'll love it!

I received a copy of "Forgotten" from publisher. It is published by Little, Brown for Young Readers and was released on June 7th of this year.

Super Book!
By R. Lees
Our family loves Tumtum and Nutmeg! The books are adventurous and exciting. They are quite funny with the situations that General Marchmouse gets into! My father is retired military and we think of him when we read what trouble he is stirring up! I think that this a great series of books to read to a child (mine are 10, 7 and 5) we laugh and and are in suspense as the pages fly by! I have sent this book to my mom who lives with her General Marchmouse and she read the stories to my nieces and nephew!

Favorite story ever!!

My sons love Tumtum and Nutmeg so much that we have read each book 2-3 times in just 9 months! My sons are 5 & 8 if that helps you to know. We have given these books as birthday gifts too, and they are much loved! The stories are about two mice that go on adventures and the characters are so funny at times, my sons are always laughing! This is an EXCELLENT read aloud book as the storyline flows well and the conversation is written perfectly for reading aloud. I highly recommend this whole series of books by this author. She has a wonderful talent in telling stories that engage children and adults!

Clever Fun
By Pop Bop
Tumtum and Nutmeg are a married couple of mice who live discretely hidden in a house also occupied by two children, Arthur and Lucy, and the children's widowed father. Father is a bit distracted, and so Tumtum and Nutmeg have taken it upon themselves to look after Arthur and Lucy. This book comprises three adventures - one involves Christmas gifts, one is a seaside adventure, and the final entry is a circus styled tale.

The adventures are mild and usually involve a mystery or the foiling of shenanigans on the part of other villainous mice. Sometimes Tumtum and Nutmeg and their friend General Marchmouse are the heroes; sometimes they stay more in the background and indirectly help Arthur and Lucy solve a mystery.

There are hints here of "Wind in the Willows" and "The Borrowers" and even "Stuart Little" or "Mistress Masham's Repose", which is all to the good. The writing is direct and energetic and avoids being twee or precious. Rather, the characters are convincing and have some real personality. The overall effect is brisk and the premise is never allowed to become cloying.

These would make very nice and calm bedtime read-to stories, but strike me as accessible to and entertaining for confident early readers. While the story lines don't break any new ground there is enough action, humor, suspense and cleverness that they are very engaging. The book is, in a sense, old-fashioned, but it isn't overwritten and feels like a sort of "modern old-fashioned" read, which might make it more appealing to a wider range of modern young readers. I thought it was a nice find.

If ever there was a reluctant hero...
By Michael Wiley
The first time I ever picked up a Bloom County book at a bookstore in the mall...and this was the book. After a few pages, I found myself having to close the book in order to gather my wits about me, wipe the tears off my face, then attempt to forge farther ahead...usually having to immediately close the book because glancing at the same page instantly initiated another wave of helpless laughter. Had this only happened once, I could have dealt with it as the adult that I believed myself to be...but, since it happened every few pages, I realized myself to be captivated in the tormented world of Opus and friends. Unfortunately (and much to my surprise, I didn't really care), this resulted in more than a few patrons of the bookstore in question to raise their eyebrows in my direction. I would like to thank the kind person that finally joined me (they picked up a copy of their own) and together we chortled together, pausing at times to close our books at our respective pages to momentarily regain our composure. Whimsical, thoughtful, introspective, silly, hilarious, thought-provoking...If you never read another comic, even if you think you're too old for silliness, you owe it to yourself and Berke to read this...and yes, I bought the book!

Giggle! Chortle! Snort!

When this book first came out, I was 9. I was already reading the strip, and loved it. I've never stopped doing either. Like many other comics and cartoons, it has many levels for appreciation. It combines a genuine understanding of the overall importance of silliness, sharp and brilliant satire, and brief, poignant moments of sincere emotion. I keep copies of this book and Penguin Dreams in my car and read a page before I walk into my office most days. Happy reading!

Bloom County Volume Two
By Mark J. Fowler
These strips aren't just funny. They're laugh out loud, roll on the floor, tears streaming down my face, people coming into the room to see "WHAT-are-you-laughing-at?!" funny.
Berkeley Breathed has created a perfect 'toon universe populated by funny and poignant humans, along with funny and poignant penguins, groundhogs, Bill the Cat and purple critters that hide in your closet of anxieties waiting to grab you as soon as you sleep. Breathed was an absolute genius at seeing some topical issue of the day (circa 1984 for this voume) holding it up to the light so that we could see it just the way that he did, then skewering the thing with what would be the humor equivalent of cupid's arrow.

The Host, by Stephenie Meyer

The author of the Twilight series of # 1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, May 2008: Stephenie Meyer, creator of the phenomenal teen-vamp Twilight series, takes paranormal romance into alien territory in her first adult novel. Those wary of sci-fi or teen angst will be pleasantly surprised by this mature and imaginative thriller, propelled by equal parts action and emotion. A species of altruistic parasites has peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but feisty Melanie Stryder won't surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories of fellow resistor Jared, Wanderer yields to her body's longing and sets off into the desert to find him. Likely the first love triangle involving just two bodies, it's unabashedly romantic, and the characters (human and alien) genuinely endearing. Readers intrigued by this familiar-yet-alien world will gleefully note that the story's end leaves the door open for a sequel--or another series. --Mari Malcolm

From Publishers Weekly
In this tantalizing SF thriller, planet-hopping parasites are inserting their silvery centipede selves into human brains, curing cancer, eliminating war and turning Earth into paradise. But some people want Earth back, warts and all, especially Melanie Stryder, who refuses to surrender, even after being captured in Chicago and becoming a host for a soul called Wanderer. Melanie uses her surviving brain cells to persuade Wanderer to help search for her loved ones in the Arizona desert. When the pair find Melanie's brother and her boyfriend in a hidden rebel cell led by her uncle, Wanderer is at first hated. Once the rebels accept Wanderer, whom they dub Wanda, Wanda's whole perspective on humanity changes. While the straightforward narrative is short on detail about the invasion and its stunning aftermath, it shines with romantic intrigue, especially when a love triangle (or quadrangle?!) develops for Wanda/Melanie. 10-city author tour. From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—A race of parasitic aliens has nearly completed its benevolent conquest of the aggressive, violent human race. By implanting themselves into humans, the souls have access to all of the hosts' memories and emotions and are indistinguishable from them. The humans do not realize they're being taken over until it is nearly too late. Some resist the invasion, including Melanie Stryder, her brother, and her lover. When Melanie is killed on a mission, her body is taken over by a soul named "Wanderer." Melanie's memories prove overwhelming for Wanderer, who eventually succumbs to her need to search out her family. What follows is a tale of survival, friendship, and love. By discussing Earth's invasion from the conqueror's viewpoint, the novel takes a unique look at a fairly standard plot device. It overcomes a slow beginning after Wanderer reaches the humans and begins to care about the ones she meets personally. She comes to love Melanie's brother like her own, fights her body's attraction to Melanie's lover, and grows ever closer to another human, Ian. The humans in turn accept Wanderer as a valuable and caring individual, rather than as Melanie's oppressor. They overcome their prejudices and begin to work together in the humans' best interests. Host will likely appeal to readers interested in supernatural romance or character-driven science fiction. Questions of what defines humanity and love add a philosophical angle to an engaging and entertaining title.—Karen E. Brooks-Reese, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA

Exciting and Thought-Provoking Post-Invasion Story
By SciFiChick
It's been years since parasitic aliens calling themselves "Souls" have invaded Earth and taken over. Once a "Soul" is placed in a human host, the alien takes over and suppresses the human's mind. But when Wanderer awakes in her new body, she finds that her human host isn't so easily overcome. Melanie, her younger brother, and the man that she loves have been in hiding; and she'll do anything to get back to them, even resist the alien parasite that has taken over her body.

The parasitic "Souls" are easy to dislike at first. But Meyer has given the alien race such a rich and colorful backstory that is truly fascinating. And Wanderer is a unique "Soul" who soon finds herself caring for the same people as her host, and finding herself torn between ties to her own people and the humans.

It's been a long time since I've read such a stirring, science fiction tale that has made me go through so many emotions. The Host is a deep and beautiful story, and very different from Meyer's popular, young adult series. This is a rare story that made me stop and think about the choices that are made and what I would do in their place. Intense, exciting, dramatic, and inspiring, I'd highly recommend this novel to any reader, not only science fiction fans.

A Fascinating Story!
By Jake
In the future Earth has been taken over by a unique alien species. The infiltration was slow and undetected until it was too late. Now these aliens, known as Souls, live inside human bodies, which act as hosts for the invading parasites. Usually when a Soul is placed in a new host it is able to take full control of the body, pushing aside any remnant of the human consciousness that once lived inside.

After a Soul named Wanderer is inserted into her new host she soon realizes something isn't right. It seems the human who once inhabited this body refuses to give in and die. Melanie Stryder wants no part of Wanderer and is doing everything she can to fight back. Even though Wanderer controls the body, nothing she does is able to quench Melanie's spirit. She is always there, in her head, so to speak.

As time goes by Melanie's memories become Wanderer's and soon she finds herself longing for the people that meant so much to her host. Melanie left behind her brother and the man she loves, and now Wanderer has developed those same feelings. Soon Wanderer and Melanie begin working together to track down Melanie's loved ones, all the while being careful that they don't lead the other Souls to the humans who are in hiding. When they finally do find them, they must figure out a way to live peacefully with a group of humans who have grown to hate Souls. Emotions flare and relationships are tested in agonizing ways as two lives must share one body and as enemies must learn to co-exist and survive.

Stephenie Meyer has taken the publishing world by storm with her groundbreaking young adult Twilight series. The Host is her first stand alone adult novel and millions of readers are anxiously waiting to see how it stacks up. Having never read any of the Twilight books, I didn't know what to expect from a Stephenie Meyer novel. What I found was a fascinating story that is really unlike anything I have ever read.

While this story certainly has sci-fi elements, it is not what most would consider hard-core sci-fi. Meyer focuses more on the relationships of the characters and the intriguing dilemma of two lives sharing one body. Much of the book deals with Melanie and Wanda's complicated love triangle with Melanie's old flame and Wanda's new love interest. There is action and suspense laced throughout, and Wanda's relationship with the surviving humans is tension filled to the max. The novel's real strength lies in the character of Wanda as she is constantly pulled between her duty as a Soul and the compassion she develops from her connection with Melanie and the other humans. Indeed, Wanda is the most human character of them all.

Meyer's writing is top-notch throughout and never lags despite the massive page count. Readers who expect a fast paced storyline wrapped up in a mere 100,000 words may be disappointed. However, those who enjoy a steady paced tale that slowly builds into a powerful and emotional ending will love The Host. In the end we are left with just the right amount of closure, but also with a little taste of what is to come. I can only hope Stephenie Meyer will continue this incredible saga she has begun.

Sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi
By Dahlia
Just like Twilight is a vampire story for people who don't like vampire stories, The Host is a sci-fi novel for people who don't like sci-fi. Ultimately, this is a very human story about love, friendship, loyalty and family. It's moving and unique.

Truthfully, I wasn't expecting to like it much. I read the excerpt available on Stephenie's website a few months ago and wasn't overly impressed, but because it's SM and I'm a big fan of the Twilight series I decided to give it a shot. I'm so glad I did! I found the storyline compelling and fascinating from the outset - unlike other readers, I did not find the beginning slow at all (or any part). I thought the entire novel flowed very smoothly. I enjoy quieter moments in stories because those are often when you really get to know the characters and it makes the action sequences more meaningful. Once again, SM has created characters we can relate to and care about.

I've read some of the negative reviews and all I can say is that everyone has different taste. I didn't find this story lacking in any way - it's very different from Twilight but in my opinion just as good. In fact, thematically, I think it's better. We have a much stronger herione this time and get to explore a friendship between two women (Melanie/Wanderer). And while Wanderer is peaceful and self-sacrificing, no one could argue that she isn't a very strong herione who chooses to do things because they are right and ethical. For those who thought Bella was such a rotten roll model, Wanderer should make them happy. Even though this is considered an adult book, it's perfectly suitable for teens.

I'd say this is Stephenie in her best form. The entire novel from start to finish is well written, though provoking and weaves complex emotions into a fascinating storyline. She has proven herself to be an excellent storyteller (much like Wanderer). Bravo, SM!

Before he was Darren Shan's master...

Before the War of Scars...

Larten Crepsley was a teenager. And he was sick of the pomp and circumstance of fusty old vampires telling him what to do. Taking off on his own with his blood brother, Wester, Larten takes off into the world to see what his newly blooded vampire status can get him in the human world. Sucking all he can out of humanity, Larten stumbles into a violent, hedonistic lifestyle, where cheats beckon, power corrupts, and enemies are waiting.

As a lover of the series...
By Lexie
I loved this book. Larten is my all-time favorite character and to be able to learn more about how he became what he was during the original series is wonderful. There were parts of this where I gasped, where I laughed, and where I wanted to cheer. My only complaint is that it is too short. I read it in one sitting, practically devoured it (then again, I read a lot of books in one sitting). I would definitely recommend this book to those who loved Cirque Du Freak (of course read the first book of this prequel first).

A great book
By Alex Rosen
My son's review:

I thought that ocean of blood was a great book. It had very good character definition, was exciting, and the ending was very surprising. I thought that it was nice that Larten met up with characters from birth of a killer, and that there were plenty of new characters as well. As a parting thought I think this book was very good.

Delves More into the Character & World
By Book Sp(l)ot Reviews
Ocean of Blood is the second book in a four book prequel series-- to author Darren Shan's wildly popular Cirque Du Freak series. Picking up not too long after the ending of Birth of a Killer the first book in the series, this book tells of Larten and Wester's life on their own.

Readers are taken on the journey with the two vampires as they explore what it means to be on their own. They also get to see where the two end up -- at least for now.

Ocean of Blood is more (than Birth of a Killer) about the vampire world and its politics. More of the hierarchy and how things are achieved is explored. Through the two men's (or boy's, depending on how you look at them) adventures, we get to meet new vampires and see more of how the vampires operate outside of the small society portrayed in Birth of a Killer.

A lot more of Larten's personality is also unveiled in this second novel. He's grown a lot, both from where he was at the start of the first novel and over the course of this second. Readers are taken with him as he explores what it is he might want out of this life as a vampire (but, of course, there are two more novels in which to possibly find that out).

Readers of the Cirque Du Freak series will probably know where everything is leading but should enjoy seeing how the character(s) make their way there. Readers who haven't read the Cirque Du Freak series will likely very much want to after reading Ocean of Blood.

Very much like Birth of a Killer, Ocean of Blood ends on a cliffhanger--with a 'to be continued'--something that seems much more like the end of a chapter than the end of a novel. It will leave readers nearly salivating for book three . . .

23rd Anniversary
By Sedona
Being "ParrotHeads" from way back "Swine Not" seemed to be the perfect 23rd anniversary gift for my wife, and true to the "Jimmy Buffett" writing style "Swine Not" did not let us down. When I first asked my wife if there was anything special she wanted for her anniversary, she replied "Not Really". About an hour later she asked for 3 hours of uninterupted time so I could read "Swine Not". I had heard her laughing earlier and then moments of silence, then more laughter. To say the least I was intrigued. So I granted her wish.
I read the book cover to cover, I could not put it down. The way Jimmy presented the story kept me on the edge of my seat, always leading me to the next adventure. He shows the goodness of the twins and also their devilish side, but all in good taste. He also shows that all true life adventures can have very humorous side trips and that is what makes life exciting. Although "Swine Not" is a fictional account of a true story there is a lesson to be learned at every turn of the page. I highly recomend this book to all readers.

Ok, but....
By R. Seeders
I'm a huge Buffett fan and pre-ordered this book just because Jimmy wrote it, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed. This has to be his poorest literature offering to date. I'm not sure what I expected and I didn't totally dislike the book, it's just not what I have come to expect from Jimmy. Perhaps that's why he wrote it, but I really enjoyed his past books and would have liked something more along those lines. It is definitly a kids book and a pretty good one when taken soley as such. I however miss the Joe Merchant characters and ocean adventures which this is far from. I would recommend it to kids to read and loyal Buffett fans just because it's a JB book. Other than that...it was an ok read for me, entertaining enough to hold your attention, but predictable and not really worth reading again in my opinion.

No
By Steve Morschauser
At the risk of being tried for treason in the land of Margaritaville, this is not a good book. I expected more. It was a bland tale about a pig. If it was a meal, I would have sent it back from lack of seasoning. Perhaps it was meant as a kids book and I missed the point. Yeah, it was cute, but it will not be a story I will look back on. Sorry, Mr. Buffett, this one is a bore.
