Stella Bain, by Anita Shreve

"Shreve's 17th novel is a tragic yet hopeful story of love, memory, loss, and rebuilding....The novel is both tender and harsh....Shreve's thoughtful, provocative historical tale has modern resonance." ---Publishers Weekly

Stella Bain has no memory of her past when she wakes up in a hospital bed in Marne, France. It is 1916, and she wears the uniform of a British war nurse but speaks with an American accent. As soon as she is able, Stella sets out for London, where she hopes to find answers. What she discovers-with the help of Dr. August Bridge, who takes an interest in her case-both shocks and startles. As Stella's memories come racing back, she must undertake a journey across the ocean to confront the haunted past of the woman she used to be.

In this gripping historical drama that transports us from Europe to America and back again, Anita Shreve weaves an engrossing tale about love and memory, set against the backdrop of a war that devastated an entire generation.

From Publishers Weekly
Shreve's 17th novel is a tragic yet hopeful story of love, memory, loss, and rebuilding. A young woman wakes up with amnesia in a battlefield hospital tent in Marne, France, in 1916. She thinks her name is Stella Bain, and she thinks she knows how to nurse and drive an ambulance. As she recovers, she returns to duty in this new environment, caring for the wounded and dying. When she arrives in the city exhausted and destitute, she's discovered in a park by a doctor's wife, who takes her in. The doctor, Augustus Bridge, is a cranial surgeon with an interest in psychiatry. Stella becomes a €œquasi-patient€; he finds a way to get her into the Admiralty, and, when a former friend recognizes her by name, her memories return, including the fact that she has children—and the reason why she left them. The amnesia and its cause are only part of the story; the lack of understanding at the time of the consequences of witnessing the horrors of war, for both men and women, also plays a key role. The novel is both tender and harsh, and the only false note is the use of present tense, which prevents the reader from being pulled in more closely. Shreve's thoughtful, provocative, historical tale has modern resonance. Agent: Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, WME Entertainment. (Nov.)

"Compelling. . . . Shreve cleverly and movingly shifts between Stella's two lives." ---Jocelyn McClurg, USA Today

"Touching, heartbreaking, sometimes so vivid you can almost feel the fear." ---Karen Campbell, Boston Globe

"Fascinating....A slender novel with a large and complex subject." ---Carolyn See, Washington Post

Lovely story about rebuilding life and family during the horrors of war...
By Denise Crawford
A woman awakens inside a casualty tent in France in 1916. She cannot remember who she is or how she came to be there. Wounded in body and spirit, she chooses the name Stella Bain for herself as she resumes familiar duties as nurse aide and ambulance driver. For some reason she is driven to London to seek out Admiralty House where she believes she will figure out some answers to her situation. She leaves France and is found in desperate circumstances outside a lovely home owned by Dr. August Bridge and his wife, Lily. Stella falls ill with pneumonia and is nursed back to health by the Bridges. Finally, upon visiting Admiralty House after her convalescence, she is recognized and called by her real name. It is then that she begins to recover her memories and to remember what drove her from her home and to the battlefields far away. She begins a course of "talk therapy" with Dr. Bridge who has developed an interest in psychiatry and her reawakened artistic abilities help her make decisions about how to return to claim what is hers and to make amends for her mistakes.

Through the course of what is sometimes a bit of a disjointed narrative, Stella (Etna) moves steadily toward forgiveness of herself and others as well as to achieve her independence and seek the love she was denied. An interesting topic in the book was that of shell shock, seen in so many returning soldiers after the war.

I'd recommend this to any fan of Anita Shreve and to a book club group wanting a novel dealing with the human side of the effects of war in a time when women were not allowed much freedom in their personal lives.

Thank you to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for the e-book ARC to review.

Anita Shreve does not disappoint. In this heartbreaking novel
By Dr. BAM
Anita Shreve does not disappoint. In this heartbreaking novel, this reader found it difficult to put the book down once started. Excellent story of another era that can be transported to modern day in war-torn environments. Another stellar book by my favorite author.

A poignant mystery
By Great Historicals
In the novel, Stella Bain, author Anita Shreve takes us back into the turbulence of World War I, the declining Edwardian era, and the gender restrictions imposed on women. This absorbing story is about a young woman who worked as an ambulance driver in France. She is discovered shell-shocked and suffering from amnesia; all she can tell anyone is that her name is Stella Bain. But is it? Day by day, as Stella begins to heal, tiny recollections of memories, of locations, of names, flash into her mind. Determined to answer the questions of her past, she is compelled to unravel the secrets of her past, who she really is, and where she came from. What follows is a compelling, engrossing mystery.

The novel embraces strong topics such as post-traumatic stress syndrome, especially as it affected women at the time, the rights of women and societal expectations and norms, while delivering a poignant love story of pain and loss and healing.

Anita Shreve excels at drilling down deep into the human spirit, of unleashing great emotion, and all while telling a riveting story. This is very much a character driven novel, but it also has a touching mystery at its roots that definitely keeps the reader turning the pages. I highly recommend this novel for anyone wishing to cozy up to a deep, insightful story of ultimate triumph.

Ehmagawd!
By Green Marker Girl
When Mr. Myner, the too-good-looking geography teacher at OCD announces a three day trip to the middle of no where, Massie is mildly excited. There's only one thing that catches her attention- the Briarwood boys are coming too! Massie decides this is her chance to impress Derrington- and have her first kiss. So as to be sure the other girls don't think she's not experienced, she starts MUCK (Massie's Undergound Club for Kissing). Three LBR's, Alexandra, Livvy, and Carrie, join the group, along with Layne and the rest of the Pretty Comitee. Honestly, Massie has no idea how to kiss, and puts it off as long as possible. When they get to the mountains, Dylan's mom starts "hanging out" with Mr. Myner. It creeps all the girls out, but not as much as the fact that Mr. Myner has confiscated all of their electronics and most of the wardrobes.
Claie is still on the outs with Cam, after he caught her kissing Josh, Alicia's crush. She goes to desperate measures to win him back, and succeeds- but later, catches him about to kiss Alicia. She'd found out about the kiss between Josh and Claire, and was mad. Meanwhile, Massie gets her first kiss with Derrington- in an unexpected way. But when the girls walk in on Dylans mom kissing Mr. Myner the gates break - and it all comes out. A shocking end leaves the reader yearning for the next book. This is a great book-one of the best, that keeps Clique fans waiting for more!

Ah-Mazing Romance and Misunderstanding in Lake Placid
By Molly Sinclair
This Book is ah-mazing!!!I bought this book today and i finished this book today also. Thats how great it is!!! it takes place in a really upscale camp in Lake Placid where the 7th grade girls of OCD and the 7th grade boys of Briarwood good to spend presidents day weekend. They spend a week there overall.Claire is totally distraught over her messed up relationship with Cam. But there are a lot of bumps in this road as Claire discovers an enemy wihtin the Pretty Comittee. Massie is determined to beat Nina in terms of "experience" so she creates M.assie's U.nderground C.linic for K.issing or MUCK. She also plans to take it to the next level with Derrington. Dylan has a slim new bod and a very embarrassing mom. Kristen doesn't have enough money to go on the trip and is forced to stay in westchester, or is she?? And Alicia is obsessing over Josh Hotz, her new crush, but who is he drooling over? And all of this funnels to the end of the book, the climax. This climax is so dramatic and unexpected and i am so excited to see what is going to happen to the pretty commitee in Dial L for Loser, which is scheduled to come out in August (can i wait that long). I realy liked how Claire gained confidence in this book but Massie was really selfish in parts, which is kind of typical. I love reading these kind of books because they are really light and airy in a way. Also, i love reading these books because i can take a break from the serious and sad books that are assigned in literature class. And, love reading about all the designer clothes!!

Room, by Emma Donoghue

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE -- nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture

To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world. . . . It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.

Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it's the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in this eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But with Jack's curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer.

Room is a tale at once shocking, riveting, exhilarating--a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances, and of the diamond-hard bond between a mother and her child.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, September 2010: In many ways, Jack is a typical 5-year-old. He likes to read books, watch TV, and play games with his Ma. But Jack is different in a big way--he has lived his entire life in a single room, sharing the tiny space with only his mother and an unnerving nighttime visitor known as Old Nick. For Jack, Room is the only world he knows, but for Ma, it is a prison in which she has tried to craft a normal life for her son. When their insular world suddenly expands beyond the confines of their four walls, the consequences are piercing and extraordinary. Despite its profoundly disturbing premise, Emma Donoghue's Room is rife with moments of hope and beauty, and the dogged determination to live, even in the most desolate circumstances. A stunning and original novel of survival in captivity, readers who enter Room will leave staggered, as though, like Jack, they are seeing the world for the very first time. --Lynette Mong

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Five-year-old Jack and his Ma live and eat and play and sleep in one room--an 11×11-foot space that is their prison--captives of the terrifying man Jack calls Old Nick. But as Jack grows older and more curious, it becomes clear that the room will not be able to hold him and Ma forever. Michal Friedman shines as Jack; her narration is haunting and compelling in its every inflection and tone. The voice she creates for Jack is so convincing, listeners may even mistake her for an actual child. Her powerful performance is complemented by Robert Petcoff's sinister Old Nick, and Ellen Archer's portrayal of resourceful Ma, whose gentle voice is infused with patience, terror, and hope. The chemistry between the players creates a gem of an audiobook that will haunt listeners long after the story's end. A Little, Brown hardcover (Reviews, July 12). (Sept.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Critics were enthralled by Donoghue's latest novel, inspired by the Josef Fritz case, in which an Austrian man locked his daughter in the basement for 24 years. Describing it as gripping, claustrophobic, and "fantastically evocative" (Washington Post), they also predicted that Room, recently short-listed for the Booker Prize, would appeal to a much larger audience than the author's previous fiction. On the other hand, several reviewers noted that Jack's understated anxiety in the book's second half didn't quite ring true, but they also acknowledged that the critique was "based on the very high standards set by the beauty of the book" (New York Times Book Review). As a thriller of sorts and a love story, Donoghue's novel is a stunning achievement. Or, as one critic put it, "Such a story, such a mother" (Entertainment Weekly).

Best Book I've Read in Years - WOW
By K. Groh
***Now a movie! I am looking forward to seeing it! ***

I was a fan of Emma Donoghue since reading Slammerkin many years ago.

I started this book this morning and just put it down. I was glad it was a holiday and I had nowhere to go! I just couldn't stop going back to it until it was finished.

I was hooked upon reading the first paragraph, 'Today I'm five. I was four last night going to sleep in Wardrobe, but when I wake up in Bed in the dark I'm changed to five, abracadabra. Before that I was three, then two, then one, then zero. "Was I minus numbers?"'

And the story of Jack and Ma begins. The entire story is told from the perspective of Jack, a just-turned five-year-old who is living in Room with his Ma. The only thing Jack has known is Ma and Room. His day is spent utilizing the few things they have, the songs and stories his Ma remembers and the five picture books he's had read to him over and over.

Imagine being a parent living in an 10 x 10 foot room for years, trying to survive while keeping your baby growing, safe and entertained. Imagine Jack, a child who has only ever known Ma (and the late night visits from 'Old Nick' who he only sees from his vantage point in a wardrobe). Life is good for him since he knows nothing else. Empty egg shells become a snake when threaded together, empty toilet rolls become a maze when taped together, Phys Ed is sometimes Track which goes around Bed from Wardrobe to Lamp.

For Jack, his days were filled with 'thousands of things to do'; for his mom, her days were filled with the knowledge of what was outside of Room before her captivity.

Two different perspectives, two ways of looking at life.

Donoghue has done an amazing job of letting us think like a isolated, innocent boy whose life is turned upside down when he learns that Outside of Room is a big world. Up until his 5th birthday, his world was balanced, controlled and he missed nothing since he didn't know of anything else. Everything beyond the room was Outer Space. Once he was told that the there was so much more out there, fear of the unknown crept into his world.

What a wonderful job of creating their little world, of letting us into how Ma's imagination taught Jack, kept him safe, and kept him entertained. If you have children and have ever had to wait in a doctor's office or somewhere else for a few hours, it is sometimes an exhausting job of coming up with games to play to pass the time. Imagine that feat everyday, all day for years.

I had such respect for Ma as she taught Jack about so many things in a world he didn't know. Her imagination for passing the time with games using so few resources was incredible. Her love of Jack so deep and primal it made me hug my kids many more times today than usual.

And just when you think that escaping is the best thing for them, imagine what it feels like to a boy who has only known Room.

This was a fantastic story, imaginative, creative, unique and beautifully written. I never tired of reading from Jack's perspective.
I was reminded of what the world could look like from the perspective of a small child. It makes a parent want to be more kind with their words, more respectful of what their child's needs are, and more understanding when things seem confusing.

And if you think this is really contrived and just not possible, just google the name Josef Fritzl - a real life horror far greater than Room.

A wonderful book from an already favorite author.

Recommended, with reservations
By Julia Flyte
Room is based on an original, arresting, thought-provoking premise. It's narrated by a five year old boy (Jack), who has spent his entire life living inside a small room where he and his mother are held prisoner. If you want to read the book knowing no more of the plot than that, skip to the next paragraph. His mother was abducted at the age of 19 and has been repeatedly raped: Jack being born some 2 years later. Jack's mother is frequently depressed and desperate to escape. However she has protected Jack from the realities of their situation and one of the book's central ideas is that when you know no better, you always think the world that you live in is normal and it will still represent home to you.

Having a child narrate the book is very clever in many ways. Jack is oblivious to the heroic efforts that his mother makes to protect and entertain him, but these are obvious to the reader. However he never really worked as a narrator for me. He starts the book speaking in quite broken english but quickly leaves that affectation behind. I realize that he was meant to be a highly developed child in some areas while very behind in others. But I couldn't reconcile a child who knew words like omnivore, nutritional and antenna and then at other times would describe something as "the hurtest". The first time he sees his mother vomiting he describes it as "stuff falling out of her mouth like spit but much thicker", but next moment he's calling it vomit and using the word freely from then on. All these inconsistencies kept interrupting the flow of the book for me. There were also times when I would like to have been given a better insight into the reasons for his mother's actions, which the choice of narrator made impossible.

It's a story with two distinct acts, punctuated by a nerve-wracking section in the middle. I felt that the story loses momentum in the second half of the book, petering out towards the end.

This is one of those books that sucks you into its world and makes you reconsider your own. It's a quick read that's highly absorbing. I can understand why so many people think that it's brilliant, but I only found it good, not great.

Annoying 5-year-old narrator makes reading this book feel like a bad toothache
By A real pageturner
My three-star rating is an average, based on five stars for the story and one star for the way the story is told.

The premise of the story is fascinating (disturbing, but fascinating if you can get past the disturbing part), and the way Donoghue has imagined herself into the minds of people to whom the unimaginable has happened is truly remarkable.

However, I found the voice of the 5-year-old first-person narrator incredibly annoying. The use of that voice might have been interesting if Donoghue had done it for a chapter or two -- or maybe alternated the child's voice with the mother's voice -- but over the course of an entire novel, the ceaseless childish voice came to have the effect on me of chalk on a blackboard. (And no, I don't hate children; I find many of them delightful, I just don't think they should be narrating novels for adults.)

To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, I've written a paragraph in which I've tried to imitate the style in which the book is written. If you can get through the paragraph without wanting to throw something at your computer, then by all means read the book; if you can't, then maybe you should think twice about reading the book.

Why nobody warned me about the awful of reading a story telled by a 5-year-old child? If I'd knowed, I would have putted Book back on Shelf and runned away, hippity-hop like the Runaway Bunny. Silly Me, I readed all of Book because lots of people telled me about the good of it, so I thinked it would get better in a little bit. No way Jose, Book just goed on and on like this for 321 excruciating pages. I know what excruciating means because that's what Ma says it feels like when Tooth hurts really bad, and after reading this book I knowed what she meaned. Why Emma Donoghue made this choice? I've readed lots of books else by her, but Room is my worst favorite of all the books she writed.

Fantastic Series for Advanced Readers
By MMA
My son is seven. He devoured the Harry Potter books, but I had him stop after book five. At that point, I was in a real quandry. I needed a book series that would have an age appropriate story line yet challenge him with vocabulary and reading comprehension without being too taxing. The Secret Series was the perfect solution for my young voracious reader.

This book will appeal to both boys and girls as there are two main characters of each gender. Plus, the girl isn't overly "girly", so she doesn't turn my son off.

The entire series of books has mystery, intrigue, and loads of humor. However, I do recommend starting with book one and reading the subsequent books sequentially.

Love the Series
By Judy Ann M. Jablonski
I love this series as much as my third grader does. In trying to describe this book to others the only words that seem to fit together are intellectually silly. My daughter and I read this book out loud to each other and were in tears when in the early chapters we were busted by the author for doing just that. Keep them coming Bosch!

`thought-provoking and illuminating ... a wide-ranging and imaginative tour de force ... provocative and compelling nonetheless' New Statesman and Society, 24 November 1995

`provocative book ... This is a stimulating book on being human beings conceived as advanced and advancing children of the universe ... it's a genuinely educational experience. A Big Bang of a book.' Alan Bold, Glasgow Herald

... The Artful Universe is full of good things. s

`...he has a real knack for clearly explaining and synthesizing disparate areas of science, and the book is a marvellous assemblage of recent research on topics such as ancient astronomy, the unique features of Earth in our solar system, the origins of language acquisition, and the perception of colour and sound.' Choice

`Relating the complexity of biological species to the complexity of the universe is likely always to be daunting but this author does very well indeed without resorting to mysticism, common enough nowadays. Thus he managed to unearth a number of phenomena which are rarely adduced to support his thesis. The history of technology is somehow incorporated and the whole is cleverly contrived to demonstrate how aesthetics is grounded in science.' Aslib Book Guide, vol.61, no.10, October 1996

The Cosmic Anthropological Principle
By Kristor J. Lawson
Barrow, of course, is with Frank Tipler the author of The Anthropic Cosmological Principle, which argues that the fundamental constants and initial conditions of the cosmos had to be more or less exactly as they are or life - thus our conscious, self-aware human life - could not have happened.
In The Artful Universe, Barrow explores in great and fascinating detail just exactly how the fine structure of the cosmos bears fruit in the structure of the human body, and in particular the structure of our ideas, preferences, values, aesthetic reactions, ways of thinking; our minds. The primary thrust of this wide-ranging survey is that animal minds and bodies subjected to natural selection are in big trouble if they embody propositions about the world, and therefore about the appropriate way to behave, that are in any important way essentially wrong. He argues that just as the structure of the eye constitutes evidence one way or the other for the correspondence to reality of our ideas about light, so the structure of, e.g., our mathematical faculties constitutes evidence for the mathematical structure of reality.
Barrow is terrifyingly erudite, and a clear, graceful writer. He manages to convey boatloads of highly technical concepts from numerous fields in crystalline arguments accessible to anyone with a basic scientific education. You will learn a ton from this book. You'll work for it - Barrow never condescends - but you will be well rewarded.

No mind was ever a tabula rasa
By Luc REYNAERT
John Barrow illuminates in this book the relationship between the sciences and the arts with a new perspective on our emergence in the Universe by means of natural selection.

As the philosopher Victor Zuckerkandl says (quoted in this book): 'Art does not aim at beauty. It uses beauty (or ugliness) to arrive ultimately at knowledge, at truth.' (as science)

Many natural adaptations have given rise to curious by-products, some of which have played a role in determining our aesthetic sense.

Although sometimes very tentative, this rich book sheds an insightful light on more or less hidden links, like

- the connection between the heavenly bodies and the pattern of life on earth (28 days)

- the importance of symmetry: living beings are symmetrical, which is rare for inanimate objects. Also, our evaluation of physical beauty focuses on symmetry.

- size as a key to survival, with the adage 'small is best'. 'The Almighty had an inordinate fondness of beetles.'

- the origin of painting: a natural outgrowth of the fallibility of human memory and the need to communicate. Also, the reason why we like savannah landscapes and not computer paintings because they seem unnatural.

- the Chomsky (innate patterns) / Piaget (blank slate) controversy on the origin of language

- the origin of literature: the craving for social cohesion and well-being met by oral history and stories in which the hearers appear in a leading role. More, 'The pen is mightier than the sword.'

- the origin of dance: a need for frenzied activity or heightened sensibilities in preparation for war, in celebration of fertility or birth or in mourning death. The rhythmic gyrations of primitive dance bind people together.

- the origin of music (the purest form of art): animal mating calls.

John Barrow explains clearly the relationship between music and mathematics as well as theories on mathematics (Platonism, intuitionism, inventionism, formalism) and music (absolutism and referentialism).

This book is an excellent exploration of a vast and very interesting human domain. Not to be missed.

An interesting if wordy detail of the "human connection"
By k9lin@wenet.net
The first half of the book was interesting and kept my interest enough to read every word and scrutinze every example. However, by midway, the author's points became labored and needlessly exhaustive.
I guess it took me about half the book to find out what his general points were going to be. To me the book made connections between the nature of the universe and all things (particularly humans) in it.
I really wanted to closely scrutinize the chapters on sound (I am a musician and scientist). Unfortunately, by that last third of the book, I was too fatigued by the writing style. I ended up reading a few paragraphs in each section and skimming the rest, knowing (or making a logical guess) about the rest of the material. The author's basic points had already been made.
Furthermore, I felt unsatisfied by the author's overall treatment of art (particularly music). I was hoping for something more "insightful." It seems somehow self evident that particular sights and sounds are "appealing" to us given our physiology, evolution and their relationship to the nature of the universe itself. These arguments seem like tautologies; We like what we like because we are who we are. In the end, this isn't very interesting. On the other hand I could plead guilty to expecting too much.
There is more to art and music than meets the direct senses. When you try to explain what is "more" about music, you lose the meaning. Maybe the lesson is to just play the music and let it speak for itself. If the author was trying to make this point (indirectly) it is now very well taken. It's better to explain the beauty of music with selections of Joco Pastorius...
Finally, I thought the book was in places too human centric. Clearly books are intended to be read by humans. But I thought some of the author's points of view bordered on saying human animals were somehow more "important" than others. The universe doesn't make conscious choices to anoint one animal over another. Those evaluations are (too often, unfortunately,) made by us, not nature. Free will does exist.
Given these points, I do think the book was worth reading and might even be suitable for a seminar. I took about 4 days to read the book, but maybe should have taken more time. Anyway, at best, I think this book is worth 3 stars; Not bad, not great, but worth reading and discussing with others.

Light-Hearted Parody Comic with Wacky Humor
By T.NAKAJIMA
The second volume of "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan" begins with an episode about the SOS Brigade's indoor activities: Godzilla-like tokusatsu kaiju show (special effects monster show) and a new (eroge?) video game created by Nagato (with three color pages sending up the genre). The book also contains such episodes as "Tsuruya-san vs. Mecha-Mori-san and the Masked Mustache" (two girls fighting like superheroines of Japanese TV shows) and ridiculously funny "Learning Basics of Being a Maid," where incredibly agile Mori-san shows what she can do.

Yes, like its first volume, the second volume of creator Puyo's manga is a clever parody of Nagaru Tanigawa's hit anime/light novel series "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi" and Japanese pop culture in general. This time the comic includes a parody of "Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody," one of the popular episodes of the original. Also, a new character Kimidori-san (a balloon dog) enters.

This volume (and the first one) is the basis of the 2009 light-hearted anime adaptation, so if you have enjoyed it, you will love this book as well. The book (or the entire series) doesn't make any sense for those who have not seen or read the original, but for avid Haruhi fans the second volume of "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan" will be a delightful read.

From Publishers Weekly
Featuring Arthur's skeptical face and a sneering, inflatable shark strapped to the suitcase-stuffed family car, Brown's cover art gives a good indication of the fun that lies ahead--for young readers, if not necessarily for their favorite aardvark clan. From the moment school lets out for the summer, Arthur grumbles about having to spend a whole week on vacation with his family while best friend Buster heads to Camp Meadowcroak. Arriving at the Ocean View Motel, the family discovers they'll all be sleeping in one tiny room--and swimming in a pool that D.W. insists is smaller than their bathtub. When relentless rains drown their hopes of fun in the sun, their father takes them on a series of soggy field trips, to such attractions as the Cow Festival and Jimmy's Jungle Cruise. Arthur and his family eventually get their day at the beach--but just one, since they must head home the day after the sun finally appears. Offering substantial doses of Brown's trademark understated humor and art brimming with witty details, this diverting caper makes numerous visual references to a popular New England vacation spot. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-- Poor Arthur! He wants to go to camp with his best friend, but instead he has to go on a family vacation at the beach. As if spending an entire week with his sister D. W. weren't enough, the Ocean View Motel doesn't have a view, the pool is smaller than a bathtub, and their room is a cinderblock cubicle. Even worse, it rains nonstop for days. Arthur remembers that there's always something to do at camp and takes the family on field trips. A Cow Festival, Gatorville, Flo's Fudge Factory, and Jimmy's Jungle Cruise are just a few of sights they take in, and when the sun comes out on Friday, they have a glorious day at the beach. Brown's 17th Arthur adventure is right on target. The gentle irony is reinforced by his distinctive watercolors that capitalize on the humor of the family's situation and their outings. This is a funny story about making the most of a situation for children and a cautionary tale for parents foolhardy enough to go to the beach without contingency plans. A must-buy. --Jeanne Marie Clancy, Upper Merion Township Library, King of Prussia, PA

From Kirkus Reviews
Arthur would rather join his friends for baseball practice or camp, but his parents are firm: it's going to be a weeklong family vacation. But even they are daunted by the small room in the inaptly named Ocean View Motel (a shopping center is the chief sight), while D.W. observes that the pool is smaller than a bathtub. When it rains all week, though, it's Arthur who takes the initiative--he checks the newspaper and plans field trips, like the ones they have at camp. They go to a cow festival, tour Gatorville and a fudge factory, go to the movies, etc., until Father comments: ``I never realized there are so many fun things to do in the rain.'' Still, it's nice to see the sun on Friday. On his 17th outing, Arthur continues to be an unusually likable role model; amusing, healthy fare. Arthur's Family Vacation (Cloth)
By A Customer
Our family will be taking this book on vacation to the ocean with us this year! Mr. Brown does a great job of showing kids that it is natural to be disappointed when plans don't work out the way we expected. We have found that this tale of our friend Arthur is a great tool for teaching our young boys to be flexible and find the positive aspects of a situation they did not anticipate. It also serves as a great reminder to parents to have a back-up plan!

A Family Trip
By A Customer
It was Arthur's last day of school and he was going on a vacation. Arthur was thinking about Buster and then Arthur wants to go swimming. Then D.W. wants to and that night they eat lobster and Arthur said that Buster likes lobster. And that morning they went to the cow festival. On the last day they all had fun.

Frangipani: A Novel, by Célestine Vaite

In Tahiti, it's a well-known fact that women are wisest, mothers know best, and Materena Mahi knows best of all--or so everyone except for her own daughter thinks. Soon enough, mother and daughter are engaged in a tug-of-war that tests the bonds of their love.

From Publishers Weekly
In this whimsical, charming novel (her first to be published in the U.S.), Vaite introduces readers to proud "professional cleaner" Materena Mahi, one of the spunkiest, wisest, lovingest women on the island of Tahiti. With her combustible husband missing after a minor domestic squabble, Materena learns she's pregnant with a daughter. What will she do? Move on—until Pito moves back, of course. "Girls hurt their mother from the day they come into this world.... Girls are a curse," say some island women, but Matarena is delighted with her baby, Leilani, who soon grows into a free-spirited, curious, and sometimes troublesome girl. Materena instructs Leilani in all the folk knowledge of Tahiti—e.g., "To get rid of unwanted guests without hurting their feelings, broom around their feet"—but she can't answer all Leilani's impossible questions ("Who started the French Revolution? What's the medical term for the neck?"). Materena decides to send her to a good Catholic school, but if Leilani makes her a grandmother before she's 40, she's going to scratch out her eyes. Of course Leilani falls in love too young, which is just one of the family troubles Materena weathers with patience—and passion. This story of love, gossip and growing up (even at 40) has all the irresistible freshness of a warm breeze. (Feb.)

From Booklist
Featuring inimitable "professional house cleaner" Materena Mahi and her family, this is Vaite's first novel to be published in the U.S.; it will be followed by two other novels about the Mahi family. In lilting language rife with many a charming Tahitian saying, Vaite presents an archetypal story of mother--daughter conflict. Materena has always forged the middle path between ancient Tahitian rituals and modern-day know-how. In fact, when she gave the "Welcome to Womanhood" speech to her daughter, Leilani, she recited the old rules verbatim (" Don't wash your hair during your period, otherwise your blood will turn to ice"), but they were accompanied by gales of laughter. All of Materena's friends and some of her relatives avidly seek her opinions because of her commonsense wisdom and life--affirming nature. But when Leilani takes up with the motorcycle-riding Hotu, who has left many broken hearts in his wake, it is Materena who needs emotional support. Conveying a deep respect for women's strength and peppered with catchy aphorisms, this funny and moving mother-daughter story should have wide appeal. Joanne Wilkinson

"A feast ... bursting with vitality and charm" Sydney Morning Herald "A fond evocation of Tahitian life. Vaite now lives far from her homeland ... but with Frangipani she conjures up more than a taste of her island upbringing" Vogue (Australia) "A funny, heartfelt portrait of a mother-daughter relationship" Marie Claire "A memorable story about big dreams on a small island" Kirkus Reviews "Charming ... This story of love, gossip and growing up (even at 40) has all the irresistible freshness of a warm breeze." Publishers Weekly

A jewel of a book!
By Armchair Interviews
First published in Australia where the author lives with her Australian husband and four children, this enchanting novel is now available in the U.S.

Set in Tahiti, Frangipani is the story of Matarena Mahi and her family, especially her daughter Leilani. We meet Matarena early in her marriage, when she has one child, Tamatoa; and in the course of making up after an argument with her husband, Pito over his paycheck, she becomes pregnant with Leilani. Pito and Matarena reconcile, but Matarena decides to find a job, and becomes a "professional cleaner" to have control over her own money.

This book is reminiscent of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, in that the atmosphere of the place, the voices of the people, the stories of the aunties, all come through crystal clear.

Matarena has high hopes for her daughter Leilani who is so full of questions, and even after Matarena buys an encyclopedia, Leilani still has a thirst for knowledge. Sacrifices are made so she can attend an expensive catholic high school, but before she graduates, she meets a man, one who miraculously fulfills all the major points on Leilani's list of the perfect man.

The relationship between mother and daughter does not always run smoothly; often it bumps along like one of the Tahitian trucks on a mountain road. Matarena's 40th birthday becomes a turning point; she decides to make some major changes in her life. Her example makes Leilani choose a difficult path as well.

is a true joy to read, a jewel of a book, with characters you could just hug; you'll end up loving them so much.

Armchair Interviews says: If you want a delightful read, pick up Frangipani and enjoy!

Delightful and Charming!

FRANGIPANI by Celestine Vaite

March 18, 2006

Amazon Rating: 4/5 stars

I can't say enough about FRANGIPANI, the debut novel by Celestine Vaite. It's funny, charming, delightful, and is told by narrator Materena Mahi, a Tahitian woman who loves to dispense advice to all her friends, neighbors, and strangers. The heart of the book is her relationship with her daughter Leilani, who proves to be almost too much for Materena. While she is very proud of her smart daughter, she also cannot understand this new breed of Tahitian woman.

It's the story of Materena's journey from being a Professional Cleaner to a Tahitian celebrity, but the heart and soul of the book is the relationship between mothers and daughters and about strong women everywhere. I cannot wait for the next two books in the series to be published in the United States. FRANGIPANI is highly recommended.

Frangipani aka Plumeria
By D.Beyer
The book's first appeal was its tropical setting, providing me with an insider's view of life in French Polynesia without the detached and emotionless narrative of a social studies textbook. I grew up in Hawaii and am occasionally drawn to novels that offer a different perspective of island life similar to my own. The book speaks a universal language, albeit with a Tahitian twist, of family, love and relationships, told with simple prose that resonate with remarkable profundity. I loved how the author painted her protagonist with a hopeful portrait of the strength of women. I will be recommending this book for my daughters to read.
