The Nazi Olympics, Berlin 1936 (United States Holocaust Museum), by Susan D. Bachrach

"Here is the story of the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin during which the German Nazi Party attempted to turn the Games into a propaganda vehicle for its own political agenda. This fascinating book, based on an exhibit mounted by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, tells the story of those infamous Olympics. Profiled are the organizers, the politicians, and most important, the athletes: those who boycotted the games, those who were banned from participating, and those who competed. All these riveting tales are vividly recounted by Susan Bachrach, author of Tell Them We Remember. Using intriguing sidebars and evocative photographs, she brings this iconic event to life in a book that not only will be read avidly this summer as the 2000 Olympic Games take place, but also for years to come."

From Publishers Weekly
Published in conjunction with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, this penetrating volume takes a topic dear to many young readers--sports--and uses it to spotlight events leading to WWII. Bachrach (Tell Them We Remember: The Story of the Holocaust) begins with an overview of the modern Olympics, showing readers that the "spirit of the Olympics" was never entirely dissociated from politics (Germany was not invited to participate in the first two Olympics held after WWI). The author then turns to Hitler's assumption of power in 1933, two years after Berlin had been selected as the site of the 1936 Olympics, and documents the Nazis' systematic abrogation of individual rights and liberties. The discussion of the actual 1936 Olympics centers on the political uses made of them by Hitler and his propagandists, the spectacular performance of Jesse Owens notwithstanding (an eight-page color section of posters, both Nazi and anti-Nazi, convincingly demonstrates the relationship between athletic competition and propaganda in Hitler's Germany). Perhaps the most interesting sections cover American responses as political and religious groups and individual athletes considered a boycott of the Olympics; a quick look at Jim Crow laws and American anti-Semitism helps readers place various reactions and decisions in context. The writing is careful and unadorned, the facts laid out for readers to interpret. Plentiful sidebars focus on particular athletes, especially those compromised by Nazi policies. An unusually generous selection of period photos gives the material particular sharpness and immediacy. Ages 10-up. (Apr.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-This book is based on a special exhibition developed by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum that is currently touring the country. It offers not only a history of the notorious Berlin games of 1936, but it also includes the stories of many of the athletes who took part and those who did not for political reasons. Bachrach delves into the workings of the Nazi propaganda machine, the controversy inside the U.S. Olympic Committee as to whether our nation should participate in the games, and the fate of the Jewish athletes who competed. The athletic feats of Jesse Owens and other African Americans are well covered. Illustrations include period black-and-white photographs, cartoons, and posters. The full-color posters at the end of the book do an especially good job of conveying the Nazis' attitudes toward race and their beliefs in the superiority of "Aryan Blood," as well as the techniques of propaganda. An annotated time line of the history of Nazi Germany, suggestions for further reading (mostly adult titles), and a detailed index are appended. A deeper look at the history and the complexities surrounding this notorious Olympics than is found in other books.

From Booklist
The story most often told about the 1936 Olympics is that of Jesse Owens' triumphant performance, which served as a slap in the face to Hitler and his theory of Aryan supremacy. Bachrach looks deeper than this feel-good interpretation to trace the troubled path of the games both in the U.S. and Germany, examining the escalating oppression of Jews, the building of the concentration camps, and U.S. efforts to start a boycott. Bachrach ties those threads together into a comprehensive narrative that provides the right amount of political background to tell the complete story of the games and their athletes--those who competed, those banned from competition, those later murdered in concentration camps, and those who took part in the boycott. Enriched with biographical sidebars and illustrated with photographs from the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, this is a welcome addition to any sports or World War II collection. Absolutely wonderful!
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
This large and attractive book tells the story of the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin. Many Americans have heard of them, though their knowledge is limited to the fact that Jesse Owens, an African-American, won four gold medals, humiliating Adolf Hitler. This book tells the story of those Olympics from the choice of venue in 1931, through the rise of Hitler and National Socialism, the Nazi racial policies, the movement to boycott the games, the Olympics themselves, and finally on to the aftermath of the games and the Holocaust. Following the texts are some wonderful appendices on the chronology of the games, statistics on the 1896-1936 Olympics, and a list of nations participating in the 1936 Olympics. But don’t stop there! After the index is collection of in-color reproductions of posters and artwork connected with the 1936 Olympics.

This book is absolutely wonderful! It covers everything you ever wanted to know about the 1936 Olympics, and even quite a few things you never would have thought to ask. Although this book is placed under Ages 9-12 category, it is very informative, and a must-read for anyone who wants to understand those games. I highly recommend this book!

Images fine and funky accompany each letter of the alphabet in three noteworthy offerings. Museum ABC from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for example, announces "A is for Apple" while, opposite, a full-color spread divided into quadrants presents the evidence with details from Roy Lichtenstein's Red Apple, a detail from Paul Cezanne's Apples and two other works from the museum's collection. "N" features the noses of Giorgio de Chirico (a detail from his Self-Portrait) and Nefertari Kneeling in Adoration, a detail from the subject's Egyptian tomb, among others. Back matter provides further information about each artwork. All ages.

From School Library Journal
reSchool-Grade 3-Alphabet books are a dime a dozen, and the text of this one is no different than most: "A is for apple. B is for boat." What saves it from banality is the artwork. For example, the letter "D" is illustrated with reproductions from around the world-three male dancers from 16th-century India; a fierce, masked performer of 18th-century Japan; a rather surreal-looking pair of Colombian dancers; and an Impressionistic bevy of ballerinas by Degas. It is a shame that all this outstanding art has not been given a more thoughtful and exciting layout. Each spread contains a page of text facing a leaf of details from works of art tightly and symmetrically situated in evenly divided, square slots. The reproductions themselves are excellent, often humorous, and always eye-catching, but the book itself seems mainly intended to showcase the extensive holdings of the Metropolitan Museum. Still, it is a nice introduction to famous paintings, but may be most appreciated by visitors to the museum.

K-Gr. 3. Imagination and creativity abound in this brilliantly simple alphabet book from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Each page has its minimal text, as in "A is for Apple" facing a page of four images taken from the vast collections of the Met. There are objects children see every day, an egg, a tree, an umbrella, and parts of themselves, such as feet, hair, and nose. "M is for Monster" produces pictures too beautiful to be scary, including Walter Crane's Beast, and a creature from a fifteenth-century tapestry. "O is for Ox" and "P is for Peacock." They are clearly chosen for the range of fabulous images: an Italian ivory ox from a book cover plaque from the first millennium; a peacock from a nineteenth-century Will Bradley poster. The oversize letter and the word it signifies are printed in color, a hue that picks up one of the colors of the art on the opposite page. Pictures are taken from a timeless array of countries, media, and artists. Very pleasing to look upon, this illuminates lessons in color, form, shape, diversity, and artistic vision as well as the alphabet. GraceAnne DeCandido

This book is stunning!
By Amazon Customer
My son's godmother gave it to him for his first birthday, and everyone at the party was entranced. It shows four paintings (or details from paintings) for each letter. For instance, H is for hair, and the pictures are of George Washington, a Japanese geisha, a French woman in the 18th century, and an Egyptian princess. This is a book you can look at again and again, and that adults won't tire of. A great, unusual ABC book.

Great keepsake book
By A Customer
This book is wonderful gift for children ages 2 and up. Age 2 children (like my son) will enjoy counting the apples on the A page, for example. Some of the art includes complex scenes that school-age children may enjoy losing themselves in. The book helps teach children about art and the alphabet in an intelligent, non-cutesy fashion. Each letter has a two-page layout: one page is: "[Letter] is for [one word]" in large type, and the second page is four different artistic intrepretations of that word, like: an Egyptian mural, a Japanese woodblock print, a Renaissance canvas, and nineteenth century French painting. What a refreshing change from cartoonish, character-based children's books!

PreSchool-KAAnother successful tale about D.W. and her brother, Arthur. This time the little aardvark has lost her beloved blanket and enlists her sibling's aid to find it. After a thorough search of the house with their father, they check the playground, the day-care center, the library, and even the car washAall places where preschoolers spend lots of time. Arthur, as usual, plays the "straight man" to D.W. The book has a wonderful story line, one that will be familiar to children and parents alike, and each page is filled with Brown's delightful renderings of a child's world. The vocabulary is simple enough for even a very young child to understand. For example, D.W. postulates that "the big vacuum thingie" at the car wash sucked her Blankie out the car window! Thankfully for D.W. (and for children everywhere who need a security blanket), Mother saves the day. All is right with this tale, which will appeal to most youngsters, but especially those who still have and need their "Blankies."AElisabeth H. Hall, Arden Elementary School, Columbia, SC

Ages 2^-4. In the latest picture book about Arthur's little sister, D. W. loses her beloved blankie, and she is devastated. She comes home from day care, and it's gone from her special hiding place. Arthur and Daddy help her look everywhere at home. She tries the library, the car wash. She has had her blankie forever: when she learned to eat by herself, when she learned to walk. She can't sleep without it. Then Mom comes home and finds it--she washed it. Preschoolers will enjoy the detailed pictures of the messy, cozy house. They will recognize the panic and sadness and then the snugly comfort of the end. They might go on from here to Kevin Henkes' Owen (1993), where the child has to work out what to do with his cherished blanket when he starts school. Hazel Rochman

About the Author
Marc Brown, who was born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1946, received great encouragement and support from his grandmother and uncle. Inspired by the books of Maurice Sendak, Brown decided to pursue his ambition of becoming an illustrator. After receiving a B.F.A. in painting from the Cleveland Institute of Art, he worked as a TV art director, a professor of mechanical drawing, and a freelance illustrator, before becoming a writer. In his books, he addresses the fears and problems which children face and events like friendship, family, school and pets. For his illustrations, Brown uses pencil with watercolor on a variety of papers to achieve different visual effects. The "Arthur" series, about the everyday adventures of a lovable aardvark, began in 1976 and continues to this day with 25 titles published. Brown has also created other series such as the "Rhymes" series, and the nonfiction "Dinosaur" series, which conveys messages of do's and don'ts. These series, like the stories of Arthur, hold the attention of young children while transporting their imaginations on magical journeys.

The Mysterious of D.W.'s Precious Blankie
By George Buttner
... is why it's never seen in any of the other books. That being said, this is another delightful D.W. story.

D.W. badly wants her favorite Blankie, but can't find it. It's gone off-the-map and D.W.'s not going to be able to get to sleep without it. Arthur kindly agrees to help her out by taking her to some places where she might have left it. It's not at any of them, though. Later on, however, D.W. makes a surprising discovery about what happened. Will it change her feelings for Blankie?

I really like the illustrations in this book. I enjoy the pink stripes on D.W.'s outfit in the books (that aren't on the TV show) and this book takes it a step further on the cover by adding a blue speckle pattern to her pink jumpsuit. The story is warm and cute and perfect for any D.W. or Arthur fan.

Oh, No... A Lost Blankie!
By The Invisible Pam
This is not the sort of book that I typically pick out to read to my children (I'm not into 'franchises') but it is the sort of book that my 5 year-old daughter picks up all the time, and guess what? I like this story. (:-)

I like that Arthur is so understanding of D.W.'s loss and sense of urgency. I like that he is helpful without an adult telling him to be. He walks DW to the library and the car wash to see if the errant blankie might be there.

I also like that Arthur helps DW to use *logic* to try to deduce where she might have left the blankie.

Five Stars. These feelings of consideration and warmth are ones that I try to instill in my own children.

Humorous and sympathetic, a great pick
By A. Ryan
Marc Brown's children's series on PBS is priceless; Arthur and his friends were introduced to us that way. It was only recently that I became aware of the books, which actually came first! Well, if you're a fan of the cartoon, you'll love the books even more.
DW's Lost Blankie is a classic kind of story that all kids can relate to - who can't remember the sudden anxiety of losing their own blankie, or some favorite toy when they were very young? This is a short story with a light touch of humor which shows how they can deal with it, offers sympathy and reassurance and helps kids know how they can keep calm and work through tracking down that all important security object. My mom heard me reading it to my kids and laughed out loud at one point, it was so true to life.
Author Marc Brown apparently illustrates his own books. His watercolors are warm, nicely done and perfectly suited to the subject matter. We really like his style in general, so my kids (aged 2 and 5) and I will be selecting more of his stories for our bedtime reading. Highly recommended for all children from early toddlerhood through the primary school years.

THIS BOOK IS IDENTICAL TO THE "BREAKUPS AND MAKEUPS" BOOK OF THIS SERIES!
By MidwestMomma
I've never seen this before, but this publisher must have just reprinted the EXACT SAME BOOK as the second in the series, put it out a year after the second book, and gave it a different title. My daughter was disappointed to open it and find that this is not, in fact, the third book in a series. Amazon customer service was awesome, though, and quickly processed a full refund my purchase. :)

Buyer BEWARE! This is the EXACT SAME BOOK AS How To Rock Break ups and Make ups just with a different title and cover. What a rip off. And as some have already mentioned, it is not anywhere near as good as How to Rock Braces and Glasses.

The Devil That Never Dies: The Rise and Threat of Global Antisemitism, by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen

A groundbreaking--and terrifying--examination of the widespread resurgence of antisemitism in the 21st century, by the prize-winning and #1 internationally bestselling author of Hitler's Willing Executioners.

Antisemitism never went away, but since the turn of the century it has multiplied beyond what anyone would have predicted. It is openly spread by intellectuals, politicians and religious leaders in Europe, Asia, the Arab world, America and Africa and supported by hundreds of millions more. Indeed, today antisemitism is stronger than any time since the Holocaust.

In THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen reveals the unprecedented, global form of this age-old hatred; its strategic use by states; its powerful appeal to individuals and groups; and how technology has fueled the flames that had been smoldering prior to the millennium.

A remarkable work of intellectual brilliance, moral stature, and urgent alarm, THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES is destined to be one of the most provocative and talked-about books of the year.

From Booklist
Anti-Semitism has often been compared to a deadly virus, characterized by long latent periods and then reemerging in new and even more virulent forms. Goldhagen, who has specialized in provocative, controversial works on the Holocaust and anti-Semitism, examines the virus in its latest, terrifying form. Per this author, anti-Semitism has broken free of its centuries-old host in Europe and now infects institutions and individuals across the world. Facilitated by the global nature of modern communication, the old blood libels, distortions, and wild conspiracy theories about Jews are now widely believed and expressed in places as far flung as Malaysia, West Africa, and Pakistan, none of which have indigenous Jewish populations. Goldhagen maintains that international organizations, including the United Nations and some so-called human-rights groups, use the mask of anti-Zionism or opposition to Israel to nurture and reinforce hatred of Jews. At the same time, there has been a resurgence of anti-Semitism in traditional places in Europe, and it transcends the political barriers of the Left and the Right. As in his earlier works, Goldhagen tends to paint with too broad a brush, but this is still an important investigation of an undeniably dangerous phenomenon. --Jay Freeman

Review
"No other writer has held mass murderers, deniers of truth, and propagators of hate to a higher standard of moral accountability than Daniel Jonah Goldhagen....His latest, The Devil that Never Dies, doubtlessly will shatter the way people think about anti-Semitism---both in its past incarnations and present day existence....When the world's manmade atrocities, moral failures, and blatant hypocrisies occur, he has proven himself time and again to be a righteous chronicler on behalf of the persecute and the dead."
---Thane Rosenbaum, Huffington Post

"A frightening exposition on how anti-Semitism has become a global phenomenon....Devil is bursting with information and insight."
---Neal Gendler, American Jewish World

"Former Harvard professor Goldhagen comes out swinging in this frontal assault on anti-Semitism and its practitioners and does not pause for breath until the final page.... A frightening photograph of a mutable demon so many fail to recognize and continue to embrace."
--- Kirkus Reviews

"An important new book....A chilling explication of the explosion of anti-Semitism in the last two decades, fueled by the Internet and other modern means of global communications, as well as a sophisticated analysis of the inter-related international institutions and political trends that underpin it. It is essential reading."
--- Rick Richman, Commentary

"Effective and disturbing....Rhetorically and sometimes physically violent anti-Semitism over the past dozen years or so is shocking in part because it does not seem to shock."
--- Jeffrey Goldberg, New York Times

"Explosive....Goldhagen's main points are hard to contradict."
--- David Mikics, Tablet Magazine

"Daniel Goldhagen's new book hits hard. This tour de force makes a chillingly compelling case that global anti-Semitism on the rise....Goldhagen's material can overwhelm and be tough going for the faint of heart. Yet his passionate compulsion to make his case beyond a shadow of a doubt is understandable, and he does so with brilliance....In The Devil That Never Dies, he does everything within his formidable intellectual power to confront anti-Semitism and make us aware that this devil is real."
--- Sharon Rosen Leib, San Diego Jewish Journal

"Important and timely....The dangers Goldhagen outlines in this brilliant work should sound a clarion call for governmental and societal intervention."
---Benjamin Weinthal, Jerusalem Post

"An in-depth look at anti-Semitism around the world."
--- Vox Tablet

global antisemitism and its lethal force
By Ursula D. Pollak
THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen

A bare seven decades after THE WORLD `learned' that six million Jews were systematically murdered by Nazi Germany with impressive efficiency in a relatively short amount of time, Jew-hatred is back in full force - this time on a global scale. In response, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, the author of HITLER'S WILLING EXECUTIONER has published "THE DEVIL THAT NEVER DIES - The Rise and Threat of Global Antisemitism". It is a much needed book, including in the US where antisemitism has become a taboo in the public sphere and where one may be lulled into the belief that this age-old scourge has lost its deadly force.

It is troubling to read that just like in Germany in the late nineteen hundreds, antisemitism has once again taken a new foothold in academia in the US and even more pronounced in European countries which either collaborated or stood by while the Nazi regime murdered two thirds of its Jews. John Mersheimer and Stephen Walt for instance distribute their specious antisemitism in the guise of respectability and seriousness and use the bogeyman "Israel Lobby" as an example of a nefarious group which takes unfair advantage of non-Jews. The old canards are recycled in a pattern of mind-numbing repetitiveness and are only surprising in their lack of imagination of NOTHING NEW.

In his extensive study, Goldhagen analyzes the singular nature of this particular prejudice and how it reinvents itself year in and year out, decade after decade, century after century to fit new circumstances while staying loyal to its core characteristic: Jews, or THE Jews, are used as the dung heap of any and all human shortcomings AND prejudices, especially in societies which prefer finger pointing to self-criticism. Goldhagen is equally adept at demonstrating that antisemitism withstands better knowledge, logic, facts to the contrary and the passion to willful ignorance of its adherents.

In an interview on Vox Tablet [...] I heard Goldhagen refer to one of the common prejudices against Jews, i.e. " JEWS HAVE TOO MUCH POWER". "What does this even mean?" he then asked rhetorically. Indeed. What does this mean? Which brings me back to the inherent nature of Jew-hatred: It's a dogmatic and quite frankly insane belief system which does not withstand the slightest effort of critical thinking. All told, it reveals more about the hater than about Jews.

Goldhagen lays bare the primordial (atavistic?) attraction of wide a swath of people - most of whom have never met a Jew and will never meet a Jew - to this specific eliminationist prejudice and how and where it thrives the best. While the internet is not to blame for the global reincarnation of this lethal hatred, Goldhagen demonstrates that the internet has been a potent vehicle for its distribution worldwide.

Goldhagen's sources are immense and global, both from classic literature, history books and other printed material. While one reviewer took Goldhagen to task for using mostly sources on the internet, I would like to ask that reviewer "How else does one access the global media?"

I would like to urge every decent, caring person to purchase this book and to read it. It is of special importance for teachers. It is of equal importance to all those who believe that Jew-hatred belongs to the past.

On p. 22, Goldhagen states. "Antisemitism is thought. It is emotion. It is speech. It is action. It is inaction". As a non-Jewish German I appeal to all non-Jews not to give in to inaction vis-a-vis this deadly hatred against a tiny minority in this world.

Must read for everyone
By Jeffrey Tannenbaum
It is scarey to see the way the world is going. This is a very detailed well writtne and researched book. Anyone who care about hatred in the world and the need to combat it needs to read this book. It is not an easy read but it contains information that is nececessaty to be before the public. Information ia a powefrul tool and Mr Goldhagen uses it well

Horrible truth - Amazingly clear
By Eli B. Perlman
"The Devil that Never Dies" is a book that needs to be read and taken seriously. It exposes the regrowth of hatred toward the Jew and how it has become expected, accepted, and institutionalized the world over. Goldhagen does a remarkable job of bringing many inconvenient facts to the surface for all to examine. This is a must read for all decent people.

The House That Ruth Built: A New Stadium, the First Yankees Championship, and the Redemption of 1923, by Robert Weintraub

The untold story of Babe Ruth's Yankees, John McGraw's Giants, and the extraordinary baseball season of 1923

Before the 27 World Series titles--before Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Derek Jeter-the Yankees were New York's shadow franchise. They hadn't won a championship, and they didn't even have their own field, renting the Polo Grounds from their cross-town rivals the New York Giants. In 1921 and 1922, they lost to the Giants when it mattered most: in October.

But in 1923, the Yankees played their first season on their own field, the newly-built, state of the art baseball palace in the Bronx called "the Yankee Stadium." The stadium was a gamble, erected in relative outerborough obscurity, and Babe Ruth was coming off the most disappointing season of his career, a season that saw his struggles on and off the field threaten his standing as a bona fide superstar.

It only took Ruth two at-bats to signal a new era. He stepped up to the plate in the 1923 season opener and cracked a home run to deep right field, the first homer in his park, and a sign of what lay ahead. It was the initial blow in a season that saw the new stadium christened "The House That Ruth Built," signaled the triumph of the power game, and established the Yankees as New York's-and the sport's-team to beat.

From that first home run of 1923 to the storybook World Series matchup that pitted the Yankees against their nemesis from across the Harlem River-one so acrimonious that John McGraw forced his Giants to get to the Bronx in uniform rather than suit up at the Stadium-Robert Weintraub vividly illuminates the singular year that built a classic stadium, catalyzed a franchise, cemented Ruth's legend, and forever changed the sport of baseball.

From Publishers Weekly
In his first book, Slate sports columnist Weintraub examines the 1923 New York Yankees, the team that opened Yankee Stadium and won the first of the Bronx Bombers' record 27 World Series titles. The center of this work is the clash between the Yankees' star, Babe Ruth, with his new "bashing" style of playing the game, and the classic "scientific baseball" epitomized by manager John McGraw and his New York Giants. While the Giants got the best of the Yanks in the '22 fall classic, Ruth and the Yankees' 1923 World Series victory over their crosstown rivals would change the face of baseball and New York City forever. Weintraub nicely infuses modern references like "imagine Ruth as Rocky Balboa preparing to wreak vengeance on Ivan Drago" into his 1920s descriptions. The book is comprehensive, and Weintraub details everything from the construction of the stadium and the careers of Ruth and McGraw to a detailed season overview and deconstruction of the 1923 World Series. The stories about Ruth and McGraw hold the narrative together, but it is the asides of forgotten personalities like Mose "The Rabbi of Swat" Solomon, Russ "Pep" Youngs, and Yankees co-owner Cap Huston that create a much-needed undercurrent of character and humor. Review
Weintraub nicely infuses modern references...into his 1920s descriptions. The book is comprehensive, and Weintraub details everything from the construction of the stadium and the careers of Ruth and McGraw to a detailed season overview and deconstruction of the 1923 World Series.―Publisher's Weekly

Weintraub is a very lively writer: he makes it all fresh and newly intriguing, adding in a whiff of Damon Runyon's saltiness and introducing readers to some of the idioms of the era. Bracing and fun for all baseball buffs, whether or not fans of today's Bombers.―Library Journal

Robert Weintraub has written a fascinating tale of one of baseball's greatest moments-the emergence in 1923 of Babe Ruth and the Yankees. The research is meticulous and the writing is delightful. Get on the train with Babe and the boys. You're in for a rollicking good ride.―Johnathan Eig, author of author of Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig and Opening Day: The Story of Jackie Robinson's First Season

Just when you thought there were no great seasons left uncovered -- or anything new left to say about Babe Ruth -- here comes The House that Ruth Built. Robert Weintraub has resurrected the 1923 season and showed us how it changed baseball that season and every season that has followed it. A perfect match of the team, the year, and the writer.―Allen Barra, author of Yogi Berra and The Last Coach

The whole baseball year of 1923 is the frame for Weintraub's elegantly constructed narrative: the year the Yankees moved into their own stadium in the Bronx and won their first World Series...There is no nickname ever used for a player that Weintraub overlooks nor any colorful phrase now common in baseball that he doesn't cite...a treasure for the fan who cannot get enough.―Booklist

Social History At Its Absolute Best
By Bill Emblom
I love great writing, and author Robert Weintraub has treated us to a rousing rendition of a story in his new book entitled The House That Ruth Built. It is an account of the 1923 baseball season with a concentration on the feud between the New York Giants and their across-the-Harlem River rivals the New York Yankees. We have had recent books devoted to the seasons of 1920 and 1921, but this book surpasses both of those. Weintraub avoids the day-by-day summaries of games that all too often make up books devoted to particular seasons. Instead the featured players in this story such as owners, managers, players, and writers are all brought back to life with anecdotes that greatly enrich this wonderful book. Examples would be a story you may well not have heard regarding the Lou Gehrig and Wally Pipp incident. How did Bullet Joe Bush get his nickname? The train ride that took the life of "Wild Bill" Donovan and spared the life of George Weiss who went on to become the general manager of the New York Yankees. The Odd Couple ownership duo of prim and proper Jacob Ruppert and slovenly Til Huston and their accompanying feud over who should manage the Yankees. Ruppert had the audacity to insist on being called Colonel when Huston is over in France fighting in The Great War to End All Wars. Giant Manager John McGraw's inconsiderate treatment of Lou Gehrig at a tryout. Bomber boss Ed Barrow telling Eleanor Gehrig, "Well, I guess he'll have to find another line of work," when told Lou would no longer be able to play baseball.

This book is loaded with anecdotes regarding individuals such as those listed above along with others such as Bob Shawkey, Herb Pennock, Carl Mays, Art Nehf, Miller Huggins, Casey Stengel, along with numerous others, not the least of which is the Prince of Pounders, the Behemoth of Biff, the Sultan of Swat, the Colossus of Clout, the Maharajah of Mash, Babe Ruth himself. You may think you have read all you need to know about the individuals in this book, but author Robert Weintraub has provided each of us with stories galore and written in a very humorous way that will keep you entertained with laughs throughout the book.

Baseball was blessed with great writers during this time period such as Grantland Rice, Damon Runyon, Joe Vila, Ring Lardner, Westbrook Pegler, John Kieran, Paul Gallico, Bozeman Bulger, and Dan Daniel. All of those names should be familiar to most any baseball fan who has done any reading on the game's history. Anecdotes along with examples of their writing are also provided.

This book is about The Battle of Broadway, the scientific baseball of John McGraw verses the long ball being ushered into baseball by Babe Ruth. McGraw berating his team into trying to win a third consecutive championship against his hated rival Babe Ruth and the Yankees. This book is social history at its best. It also amply illustrates there is more to history than wars, treaties, and presidents. I bought both the hard cover and the Kindle edition. You're a baseball fan, you say? Then buy the book. It is that good.

The Babe
By Dr. Wilson Trivino
American's favorite summer past time, baseball has gone through some tough public relation bumps in recent times. Steroids, player strikes, and money disputes make fans yearn for a time that the game took us away from life's troubles with larger than life heroes and rivalries.

One such book that delves back into the nostalgic good `ole days is The House That Ruth Built: A New Stadium, the First Yankees Championship, and the Redemption of 1923 by Robert Weintraub.

Weintraub does a masterful job of retracing back to 1923 and the origins of the New York Yankees as they moved from the polo fields into their own stadium and the essence of Babe Ruth.

The term "the house that Ruth built" is actually a play on Mother Goose nursery rhyme "This is the house that Jack built", which feed into the legend of Babe Ruth. This bigger than life baseball player was created in part by his natural abilities and the sports journalist of the day who typed out tales that captured baseball's magic.

Babe Ruth did not go to the party, he was the party. A born hell raiser who loved booze, baseball, and babes, Ruth overindulge in life's pleasures. In his father's saloon, he would sneak sips of beer and steal cigars from the patrons, all at the ripe old age of six. His parent's struggled to rein in this rebel and it was not until a priest used the power of baseball to calm his devilish spirit.

A medical official once did a full examination on Ruth to discover that he was the perfect instrument for the game. Just knowing he was at the game brought fans from all over to experience this baseball living marvel.
This book delves into the Yankee owner's rivalry mixed in with the player's high flying lifestyle as the early fans rooted for the underdogs. Weintraub also explores the influence of America's US President Harding, a fan and friend of Ruth.

Baseball is a timeless sport that capture the American spirit, Weintruab book The House That Ruth Built: A New Stadium, the First Yankees Championship, and the Redemption of 1923 is a fun read for those sports novices or experts who are open for a good old fashion baseball story. This book is the perfect get away from the hustle and bustle of our hurried lives.

Best baseball history book in several years
By Robert Ehrlich
I have read most pre-war baseball history books written. Many focus on single seasons. Most do a credible job but many focus too much on detailed game accounts to the point of excluding the off the field lives and events surrounding baseball. In weintraub's The House That Ruth Built, he manages to balance on the field accounts of the first season at Yankee Stadium with what life was like for players and fans outside of baseball. We also get a look at how the Yankees overtake the Giants in capturing more fans. Ruth is largely responsible for that but the new stadium was a wonder among ball parks. The stadium did as much as Ruth to draw fans.

Weintraub's accounts of players lives outside of the game shows the womanizing and drinking that seems to transcend eras. Despite prohibition in 1923 players found drinking clubs easily accessible and patronized by politicians and judges who were supposed to enforce the law. We get wonderful stories a young Casey Stengel, then a giants utility player. John Mcgraw the Legendary Giants manager is portrayed as a genius of the old style of small ball, that is a master of scoring by base running and strategies such as hit and run. Ruth is shown as the first to bring power ball to the game but hated by baseball purists.

Weintraub is a brilliant writer and his pace is breezy and light. He is a master at the anecdote bringing these old players to life. These boys of summer worked hard given the long train rides in un-airconditioned cars and stuffy hotel rooms in the heat of summer. We can excuse their raucous behavior given most were farm boys let loose to temptations of fame and big cities.

What is most amazing is Yankee Stadium was built for just over 1 million dollars, even given inflation, that is a small sum. We learn about the lesser known co-owner Cap Huston, who sold out to Jake Ruppert later. Huston was the one who oversaw the construction. Overall a must read for baseball fans not just from New York.

James Beard's New Fish Cookery
By Zilpha P. Underwood
I bought "James Beard's New Fish Cookery" to replace the mass-market paperback copy of "James Beard's Fish Cookery" (copyright 1954). I'd had the book 20 years or longer, and it was in tatters. In fact, I'd lost a couple of pages containing favorite recipes
This is an excellent old-style cookbook. There are no glossy photos or trendy recipes. But if you're looking for a simple and delicious recipe for oyster stew or the lowdown on crab cakes you can't go wrong with this book. Most of the recipes are pretty simple, which isn't to say there aren't recipes for elegant dishes. (Check out Trout Amandine, in the Manner of Restaurant Casenave in Paris on page 336.)
If you need a basic fish cookbook, I don't think you can do better than this one. After all, it is by James Beard.James Beard's New Fish Cookery

Timeless and enjoyable
By Sylvie C.
An indispensable seafood reference guide by a legendary master chef. Over 500 timeless recipes for 85 different types of saltwater, freshwater and shellfish. Among the many subjects clearly explained: Buying and cleaning seafood, broiling, baking, braising, sauteeing and poaching. The wonderful recipes are for gourmet meals, not scrappy and/or trendy nouvelle stuff. This book will keep its readers from making expensive mistakes with easily ruined seafood of all types. It's best for experienced cooks, not novices.

Beard's Fish Cookery
By ah
The recipes are typical James Beard: clear, precise, and solid. There are many delicious classics here which will be appreciated by cooks who enjoy dishes in which the fish is center stage. So much modern cooking often buries the taste of the fish in a plethora of other ingredients that I wonder what it is I'm eating.
Another plus is the information identifying the fish. I am a fan of Beard's straightforward treatment and respect for the product and how to cook it.
