Enchanting!!!!!!!
By A Customer
This was another wonderful book from Lois Duncan!!! It is haunting and thrilling both at the same time. It had a lot of twists and turns, although a few of them were a little predictable.

Stranger With My Face is about Laurie, a pretty high schooler, who is just beginning to gain popularity. She has a popular boyfriend and is about to go to a end-of-the-summer party with him that evening. Unfortunately she gets a 24 hour bug which forced her to stay home. The next day at school everyone insists they saw her out on the beach with another guy, but she wasn't! Soon after all this the story becomes more fast paced as she soon discovers there is someone else with her face who seems to be everywhere. At first Laurie wants to learn more about this girl who she finds out is her sister. She wants to become closer to her and be a real friend to her, but soon Laurie finds out the true evil intentions of her twin. Her own parents won't listen to Laurie when she tries to tell them about what all is happening to her. Her 2 friends believe her and her other sister, who is 8, does too, but is will cost them. Slowly the evil twin begins to eliminate the only 3 believers. The twin then begins to take over Laurie's life.

This book was really good and I definitely recommend it to any of Lois Duncan's many fans. It helps you to realize that it doesn't matter what you look like. READ THIS CREEPY BOOK!!!:)

Great Supernatural Thriller
By Beth Jones
few writers spook me like Duncan does. Stranger with my Face was the first book of hers I read. Although the actual plot doesn't thrill, its the depth of the bad character's evilness and the manipulating game she plays on the main character that really makes this story good. Also, there is romance, family bonding and loyalty among friends that makes this book even better. If you like romance, spooky thrillers and happy endings, I recommend this book highly.

Stranger with my face
Stranger with my face is by Lois Duncan. This book is a real thriller! It's about this girl named Laurie who sees herself, but, it isn't really her. When she first encounters this, it was her former boyfriend who claims he had seen her on the beach, but, it couldn't be her because she was at home sick. The second time she encounters this, her dad claims he had seen her go to her room, but, she really was at school. When Laurie finally comes face to face with this imposter, she sees herself in the mirror, but the Laurie in the mirror had her mouth open while smiling but, Laurie wasn't really smiling nor had her mouth open! Therefore, Laurie named that look alike "mirror girl". Throughout the story Laurie finds out that she was adopted from adopted Mom and Dad and she had a twin named Lia. She also discovers she is Navajo and she can use astral projection. Astral projection is when you can leave your mortal body with your soul and go around the world using your soul. But, there is something different about Lia... she's evil!
I like this book because it's a book you can't put down but, keep reading it. I'd recommend this book to any one who likes thrillers. This book is not prolonging nor is it a snore; it's a book you'll love to read! If you want to know why Lia is evil then I suggest you read the book for yourself to discover what Lia's plan really is..!

See those pancakes on the cover? I made those! They turned out just as beautifully. A word of warning though, I would cut this recipe in half unless you have a football team lurking around. I used all of the batter and froze the remaining pancakes. One minute in the microwave and they tasted almost better than the fresh made ones. I have read about other cooks doing this with pancakes, but never tried it myself. I put them in zip lock bags with wax paper in between. Now whenever I want pancakes, I just put a couple in the microwave for about 45 seconds. My son is still talking about how good the maple butter was and it was quite simple to make. I also put aside some of that in the refrigerator for use later.

The recipes are all really good and I am working my way through the book. I found that they were quite easy to follow. All of the direction are clear and concise. The ingredients are easy to find, so no worries there like some other cookbooks. This is definitely a keeper for me.

You'll want to add this one to your collection...
By Lindsey
My cookbook stash is really too low. I don't even have a basic Betty Crocker cookbook, how sad is that? And I'm not really the best at picking out new cookbooks to add to my shelf... or I wasn't until the Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook set the bar high for me. This very nice, hardcover book with glossy pages is full of everyday breakfast, brunch, and anytime recipes - basics like biscuits, buttermilk fried chicken, and split pea soup, and specialty dishes like baked truffled grits or coconut lemon curd cake. It's full of color photos, hints and tips, and step-by-step instructions that even I can't mess up. ;-)

So far my favorite recipe is the Blueberry Crumb Muffins. I made a batch of them one day and the next they were gone. And oh my word, SO good! They truly were the best muffins I have ever made, and were easy enough that I'll never feel that I need to go with a box mix again. In fact, just saying (or typing) "box mix" makes me feel like I'm cheating on these delicious muffins. YUM!

Good ideas, recipes are OK
By Erika Rose
I've made a couple recipes from this book so far. The pancakes were OK. Scrambled eggs were good, but I already knew how to make scrambled eggs. Something is off with the biscuit recipe --I think 2 tablespoons of baking powder to 2 cups of flour is way too much baking powder. Resulted in a bitter-tasting biscuit with a poor rise from inflating and (deflating) too fast [for the record, I don't use BP with aluminum]. The thing that ticks me off is I went to Martha's website and saw a video of him making "his" biscuits and he used an entirely different technique and recipe --that recipe had 8 cups of flour to 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons of baking powder and he baked them at 400 degrees (not 350 as called for in this book). I then went to Food and Wine's website and they had another recipe for "his" biscuits, which again, was entirely different; although, the editors said he "contributed," which means that they recognized that the recipe he gave them was a sham [for the record, the F&W recipe has 2 teaspoons of baking powder plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to 2 cups of flour, baked at 425 degrees]. I'm no mathematician, but even I can see the ratios are OFF. Hmmm. . . . . Overall, it is a beautiful book with good ideas for sprucing up breakfast and lunch. But don't think for one minute that you will actually be getting authentic (or tested) recipes if you buy this book. Neil wants you to think you're a failure in your kitchen so you have to stand in line for breakfast at his restaurant.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3AThese two titles are part of a series of chapter-book novelizations of PBS's Arthur episodes. Even though the covers proclaim "A Marc Brown Arthur" and show a photograph of Brown on the jackets, the books themselves have been written by someone else, and are based on teleplays created by yet other authors. The texts are interspersed with black-and-white illustrations. Arthur and the Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club deals with an unusual theme for primary-grade audiencesAcensorship. Angry parents have demanded that a series of scary books be banned from the public library because they believe they are frightening their children, and Arthur and his friends decide to fight back. Arthur's Mystery Envelope concerns the young aardvark's curiosity and anxiety when the principal gives him an envelope to take home marked "PRIVATE and CONFIDENTIAL." His desire to be honest is tempered by his fear of negative consequences as he wrestles with the dilemma of whether to deliver the envelope or to "lose" it. The reading level of these books is problematic: the vocabulary exceeds that of average third graders, yet the audience of the Arthur show is usually much younger. They could be used as read-alouds, and would undoubtedly appeal to children who watch the program and to precocious younger readers.ALinda W. Tilden, Cherry Hill Library, NJ

Examining censorship
By Chess Heart
Arthur and the gang are not-so-patiently waiting for the next installment in the Scare-Your-Pants-Off Book club. They’ve read all the others in the series, like “Curse of the Mummy’s Breath” and “Zombie Substitute Teacher” and can’t wait for the next one to come out.
The day it’s due to arrive at the library, the gang is poised, having all but camped out overnight to be the first in line to check it out and read it. You can imagine their surprise when they find out that it has been banned from the public library! A group of concerned parents have decided that it’s not appropriate for children and to have had it removed! What’s the gang to do? Is there any way Arthur and his friends can get the book back so everyone can enjoy it? A surprise ending is in store for the reader, making this a fun page-turner.
Marc Brown’s Arthur is one of the best-known characters in children’s literature today. He’s seen on television, has large format picture books and also the Arthur Adventure series, of which this title is #2. Intended for intermediate, independent readers who have graduated to short chapter books, the Arthur books are easy to read, a lot of fun, and encourage readers to think about their world and the different issues of friendship, family or in the case of “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club”, censorship....
I have used “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club” in my own classroom many times and found that it’s a great way to stimulate conversation and thinking among my students (one cryptically hinted that maybe we should ban THIS book as well!!). My point in using it as a social studies tool isn’t to agree or disagree with students so much as it is to get them to THINK—- “tell me your feelings about censorship, but back it up with reasoning and research” is how I address the issue. This in turn allows the student not only to voice their own opinion, but to examine their feelings and opinions as well; too many times in our culture we allow other folks to do our thinking for us.
Mr. Brown has done an excellent job of taking a very complicated issue in our society and presenting it to young readers in an understandable and intelligent way. I appreciate and applaud authors who not only aim to entertain their readers, but encourage them to think about themselves and their world. Hats off, Mr. Brown!! You’ve done it again!!

Excellent, Engaging Story About Censorship and Activism
By Tara
Kids who are already fans of Arthur and his adventures in the PBS cartoon series will truly love "Arthur and the Scare-Your-Pants-Off-Club." Children who've never met Arthur and his gang are in for a treat! Arthur and his friends, Francine, Buster, Sue Ellen, and the Brain, are eagerly anticipating the newest release of the "Scare-Your-Pants-Off-Club" book. Avid fans, they join a growing line of young readers ready to storm the library and check out the next spooky story in the series. Soon, though, their excited anticipation turns to confused disappointment. The "Scare-Your-Pants-Off-Club" books are no longer available. They have been banned from the library, and removed from its shelves. The kids soon learn that a parents' group has formed against the series, and another friend's parents are leading the charge! Our heroes soon organize a group of their own, determined to rally kids and adults alike to bring the books back into the library and into the hands of eager young readers.

"Arthur and the Scare-Your-Pants-Off-Club" delicately addresses complex issues of morality. Within the 58 pages of this story, our gang learns:
*Adults don't always make accurate, informed decisions.
*There are time when you may have to fight to keep the things you love.
*Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for a good cause.
*Activism can help you get your message out to the right people.

Censorship affects us our whole lives, and this "Arthur" book give parents the opportunity to discuss why censorship exists, and how we strive to strike a balance between freedom of thought and protecting society from ideas that might be harmful. These lessons are all taught in an effective, entertaining, and age-appropriate way, and any young chapter book reader will immediately empathize with Arthur and his troubles.

Powerful Story About Censorship
By George Buttner
This second Arthur TV Chapter Book is an insightful look at attempts to censor literature read by children. Adapted by Stephen Krensky, based on a TV Story by Terence Taylor, "Arthur and the Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club" finds the kids of Elwood City shocked.

They've been waiting eagerly outside the library on a Saturday for the newest release in their favorite book series, "The Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club." Just when they think they're about to get the new book, the librarian Ms. Paige Turner appears with a startling announcement --- due to concerns by a parents group called P.A.W.S., all books in the series have been pulled from the library shelves.

After a discussion of past times that they wanted something and didn't give up, Arthur and his friends formulate a plan of action. They get to work, but will their efforts be enough to return the books to the shelves? And just what does this P.A.W.S. group have against these books anyway?

This book was released in 1998 and the "Scare-Your-Pants-Off" books largely resemble the "Goosebumps" series by R.L. Stine. But readers will most likely be reminded of the fervor of fans of the "Harry Potter" series and the attempts that have been made to censor it. Regardless of where the reader might stand, this book has strong lessons about standing up for what you believe in and taking the time to know all the facts before making any decisions.

Kill Alex Cross was "Patterson at the top of his game" (Washington Post). Alex Cross, Run is even better.

DON'T LOOK, ALEX CROSS

Top plastic surgeon Elijah Creem is renowned for his skills in the operating room, and for his wild, no-expense-spared "industry parties," bringing in underage exotic dancers and models for nights of drugs, champagne, and uninhibited sex. That is, until Detective Alex Cross busts one of Creem's lavish soirees and ruins his fun. Now Creem is willing to do anything to avoid going to jail.

DON'T THINK, ALEX CROSS

But Alex doesn't have time to dwell on that case. A beautiful woman has been found murdered in her car, a lock of her hair viciously ripped off. Then a second woman is found hanging from a sixth-floor window with a brutal scar slashed across her stomach. When a third mutilated body is discovered, rumors of three serial killers on the loose send Washington D.C. into an all-out frenzy.

JUST RUN

Alex is under so much pressure to solve these three grim cases that he hasn't noticed that someone else investigating him-someone so obsessed and so twisted that they'll do anything-ANYTHING- to get the vengeance they require. Alex Cross, Run is James Patterson's most unrelenting story yet-a white-hot, sensational thrill ride with the most extreme and gripping characters Patterson has ever brought to life.

Little Scarlet: An Easy Rawlins Mystery, by Walter Mosley

For the huge audience that has always thought they should read Walter Mosley, he delivers at last the novel they've been waiting for-one so unstoppably dramatic that it will rank among the classic mysteries of our time. At the height of the devastating 1965 Watts riots, a white man is pulled from his car by a mob and escapes into a nearby apartment building. Soon afterward, a red-headed woman known as Little Scarlet is found dead in that building-and the man who fled is the suspect. The police investigate, and what Easy finds is a killer whose rage, like that which burned in the city, is intrinsically woven around race and passion.Rawlins's hunt for the killer will reveal a new city emerging from the ashes - and a new life for Easy and his friends. Mosley captures the heat and the rhythm of Los Angeles's heart, where danger is the common currency of everyday life.LITTLE SCARLET is further proof that Mosley is 'a master of mystery' (New York Times Book Review).

Amazon.com Review
Los Angeles, 1965, right after the Watts Riots, six summer days of racial violence--burning, looting, and killing--that followed the routine arrest of a black motorist for drunken driving. Although custodian and unlicensed PI Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins stayed safely inside during the turmoil, as an African-American male he understands all too well what it was about. "It's hot and people are mad," he explains in Walter Mosley's Little Scarlet. "They’ve been mad since they were babies." Even with the rioting finally cooled, police remain on edge. So when a mid-30s, redheaded black woman named Nola Payne--aka "Little Scarlet"--turns up dead in her apartment, strangled and shot and showing signs of recent sexual contact, the cops are reluctant to storm L.A.'s minority community, looking for her murderer, especially since the culprit may well be an injured white man Payne had sheltered, and who's now disappeared. Instead, they ask Easy to see what he can find out about this crime.

The case forces Rawlins to address the ethnic tribulations of 1960s America, in microcosm, and his own discomfort with discrimination, in particular.

I spent my whole early life at the back of buses and in the segregated balconies at theaters. I had been arrested for walking in the wrong part of town and threatened for looking a man in the eye. And when I went to war to fight for freedom, I found myself in a segregated army, treated with less respect than they treated German POWs. I had seen people who looked like me jeered on TV and in the movies. I had had enough and I wasn't about to turn back, even though I wanted to.

But Easy can't tackle this investigation alone; assisting him are the casually homicidal Raymond "Mouse" Alexander, as well as a dogged white detective and a fetching younger woman, who threatens to overturn the settled life Easy has been working toward all these years. Nor can Rawlins wrap the case up easily. Harassed and attacked for his inquiries, he eventually connects Payne's slaying to a homeless man, allegedly responsible for killing as many as 21 black women, all of whom had the bad judgment to hook up with white men.

Little Scarlet, the eighth Rawlins novel (after Bad Boy Brawly Brown), is unusual for Mosley, because it focuses as much on the credible mechanics of crime-solving as it does on the exposition of character and the exploration of L.A.'s mid-20th-century black culture. Combined with the author's vigorous prose and prowess with dialogue, Easy's promotion to serious sleuth promises great things for what was already a standout series. --J. Kingston Pierce

From Publishers Weekly
Set during the Watts riots of 1965, this eighth entry in Mosley's acclaimed Easy Rawlins series (Bad Boy Brawly Brown, etc.) demonstrates the reach and power of the genre, combining a deeply involving mystery with vigorous characterizations and probing commentary about race relations in America. Easy Rawlins, 45, is—like the rest of black L.A.—angry: "the angry voice in my heart that urged me to go out and fight after all the hangings I had seen, after all of the times I had been called nigger and all of the doors that had been slammed in my face." But Easy stays out of the fiery streets until a white cop and his bosses recruit him to identify the murderer of a young black woman, Nola Payne; the cops suspect an unidentified white man whom Nola sheltered during the riots, and are worried that if they pursue the case, word will leak and the riots will escalate. Easy, an unlicensed PI who also works as a school custodian, agrees to investigate, drawing into his quest several series regulars, including the stone killer Mouse, the magical healer Mama Jo and his own family. There's also a sexy young woman whose allure, like that of the violent streets, threatens to smash the life of integrity he has so carefully built. In time, Easy focuses on a homeless black man as the killer, not only of Nola but of perhaps 20 other black women, all of whom had hooked up with white men. This is Mosley's best novel to date: the plot is streamlined and the language simple yet strong, allowing the serpentine story line to support Easy's amazingly complex character and hypnotic narration as Mosley plunges us into his world and, by extension, the world of all blacks in white-run America. Fierce, provocative, expertly entertaining, this is genre writing at its finest.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Mosely introduced Easy Rawlins in 1990’s Devil in a Blue Dress, and the unofficial PI has only become angrier, more intense, and definitely more complex since then. Here, he’s embroiled in L.A.’s racial politics, investigating a murder while asking himself some tough questions. Critics agree that Little Scarlet is the best in the series. Mosely not only offers a dense portrait of bloody black-white relations, but also raises important questions about the “gray” areas that Easy must face. Characters—some new, some old—are introspective and richly drawn. Overall, Little Scarlet is a masterpiece portrait of South Central L.A., “his most searing and unforgettable account of America to date” (Los Angeles Times).

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5–The misfit hero of How to Be a Pirate (Little, Brown, 2005) returns in another Viking tall tale. Chief's son Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, his friend Fishlegs, and his cranky dragon, Toothless, get separated from their class during Boarding-An-Enemy-Ship practice. The peaceful fishing boat they are supposed to attack turns out to be a prowling Roman galley, crewed by some of the Empire's least-distinguished legions. The invaders are plotting to provoke war among the Viking factions by kidnapping the heirs of Hiccup's own Happy Hooligans and the Amazonian Bog-Burglar tribe. Then, while the locals are occupied, the Romans plan to make off with the entire dragon population of the islands. With the help of Bog-Burglar girl warrior Camicazi and the bumblebee-sized dragon Ziggerastica, the boys must find a way to counter the treacherous plan before they all end up facing combat to the death in the local arena. There is a lot of raucous humor and mock-heroic dialogue; ridiculous names add to the fun. The theme of brains over brawn is well defined. Warriors, Roman and Viking alike, are loud-mouthed, bullying braggarts, easy targets for clever, scrawny Hiccup. The sketchy, childlike black-and-white cartoon drawings are amusing but occasionally indistinct. Jon Scieszka's Time Warp Trio books (Viking), for slightly younger readers, have a sharper, more literate sense of twisted history, but the broad humor of Hiccup's misadventures will appeal to reluctant readers.–Elaine E. Awesome Book!!!Two Thubs WAY UP!!!!!!!!
By A Customer
I liked How to Speak Dragonese for several reasons. It had lots of humor, with that little side of fantasy(both my favorite genres!)I didn't really dislike anything in this book, it was SO GOOD! I think this because whenever there was a "The End," or "And they lived happily ever after," another challenge popped up for the main characters within the next few pages. This creates lots of suspense!

The setting in this book is in the past. They travel by non-motor boat and balloon, not by cars, planes, and steam boats. Once you start reading this, though, you can easily tell that it takes place in the past. It takes mostly takes place in the Barbaric Archipelago, but it also takes place a little in the Sea like a Woden's Bathtub, and the Isle of Berk.

Here's the basic outline of the plot: Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third has his dragon, Toothless, stolen by the Roman Empire! He tries to send a search party for Toothless, but before he can, the Romans take him and Fishlegs(Hiccup's best friend)to the Roman Empire, too! They both have to get out of the Empire without getting eaten by dragons!

The main characters in thsi book are:

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third: Hiccup never wants to give up; he is always trying his best in life. He is also somewhat funny.

Fishlegs: Fishlegs is Hiccup's best friend, but he is VERY clumsy, not very good at things, allergic to practically anything, and very scared.

Camicazi: Camicazi thinks she is always better then boys(she is a Bog Buglar, and all Bog Burglars are girls,) an aggressive sword fighter, nad sometimes odd.

Toothless the Dragon: Toothless is a VERY funny and unique dragon. this is becaouse he is so samll, and he has no fangs(that is why he is called Toothless.) He is Hiccup's dragon.

I would recommend How to Speak Dragonese to anyone who likes fantasy and/or adventure. If you like those genres, and you start this book, you wont be able to put it down!(At least I wasn't!)

HAPPY READING!!!!

"How to Speak Dragonese Book Report" by my daughter Stephanie Age 9 1/2, 4th Grade
By Becky Christiansen
MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS:

This book takes place in the time when the Romans had conquered most of the world, Vikings sailed the sea, and dragons filled the skies. In other words, the book takes place in the fictional past. I estimate that the year was in between the 700's and 1000's.

This is the 3rd book in the series. The setting is in two main places. One place is an isle named Berk. This is where Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III lives. The other place is Fort Sinister which is on another isle northwest of the Roman Empire. Hiccup and his dragon get stuck here later in the story.

The main character of the story is Hiccup. Hiccup is supposed to be the next Chief of the Hooligan tribe. Unfortunately, Hiccup has no Viking let alone Chief materiel. He has bad grades in Burping, Frightening Foreigners, Ruderey, Hammer throwing, Ship building, Boarding an enemy ship, and Basheyball. Thankfully, he has a good grade in Sword fighting.

Hiccup's dragon's name is Toothless. Toothless is small, maybe the height of a No 2. pencil. Despite his name, Toothless has one small tooth. Although he usually bites with his gums. Toothless, and all other dragons, speaks a language called Dragonese. Toothless' species of dragon is either Common, Garden or Basic Brown.

There are many conflicts in this story, but the main one is that Hiccup, Toothless, Fishlegs( Hiccup's best friend) and Camicazi ( the heir to the Bog-burglar tribe) were all kidnapped and taken to Fort Sinister.

First, Toothless ended up on Fort Sinister. Hiccup and Fishlegs were sailing The Hopeful Puffin , their boat, trying to board a Peaceable fishing boat and take their helmet, when they mistook a Roman dragon-capturing ship for a Peaceable boat (which is odd because the two look nothing like each other). To summarize, Toothless pooed in the Prefect's helmet and was captured by the Romans.

While on the ship, Hiccup saw the Roman's secret plans to capture all of the dragons of both Hooligan and the Bog-burglar tribes! Here is how they would do it. Two of them would disguise themselves as Hooligans are kidnap the heir to the Bog-burglar tribe (Camicazi) then vise-versa. While disguised as Bog-burglars, they couldn't decide who the heir was. All they had heard was that the heir was a weedy-looking kid. Hiccup and Fishlegs were both weedy-looking kids so the Romans/Bog-burglars took both of them. then the Romans expected the two tribes to go on a blood feud which is basically a war with a very confusing chart in the past. Since they were fighting, the Romans could capture the dragons without being noticed! Hiccup had to put a stop to it.

While on Fort Sinister, in the Tower, Camicazi was planning all sorts of crazy escape plans such as digging a tunnel with Hiccup's helmet. She tried that and ended up in the Consul's bathroom while he was bathing. Hiccup spent most of the time staring out the Tower window hoping that his father, Stoick the Vast, would come and rescue him. On Saturn's day Saturday there would be a Games festival and the four would be used as bait!

Like all stories, this one has a problem. It also has a solution. Back on Berk, Hiccup met a dragon that the Roman Consul was going to put in his food. His name is Ziggerastica. Ziggerastica told Hiccup that if he was in a life-threatening situation that he would save him. Ziggerastica is about the size of an acorn. Hiccup has very low hopes. But in the end, Ziggerastica saves Hiccup from deadly Sharkworms.

The purpose of the book is to entertain. The book is fantasy and fantasy books are meant to entertain. The book is funny and will have you turning pages faster than you can say "dragon". I recommend this book to anyone who likes "adventure cake" with "suspense frosting" and "humor flavored sprinkles"

How to Speak Dragonese (Hiccup)
I was worried at first that my 6 year old would have trouble understanding the narrator's accent, but from the first words he was fascinated with this exciting story. The accent adds powerfully to the feel of the story, very Viking sounding. We quickly figured out that this story and the movie have little in common but that didn't matter a bit. I immediately ordered two other audio CD's in this series. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get the first one and get the story from the beginning, but my boy has no problem figuring out the time line so when we do get it we will just start over from the beginning so we can hear them in sequence. Meanwhile we are really enjoying these.

In this story Hiccup has been collecting data on the language of the dragons and he alone is able to communicate with them. He put all the information in a notebook which he always carries with him. While out with his class for a pirating lesson he and his best friend Fish Legs get lost in the fog, accidently board a Roman Ship, Toothless is captured, the boys escape, then they are kidnapped, run into Alvin the Treacherous. Alvin quickly figures out how valuable the book of dragonese would be for his plan to control dragons and take over the archipelago. The book is accidently sliced in half and he gets one half of the book. The Romans (guided by Alvin the Treacherous) also kidnap the heir of the Bog Burglars, Kamakazi, and the three kids work out a plan to escape.

Each of the Dragon stories has a unique plot, no formula story here. Now that I've heard three stories I see they are woven together so we get to know the people in the stories. The characters each have personality that resonates. Just their names are hilariously funny using all the words my boy is not allowed to use at school such as Snot Lout, Fish Brains, Duh Brain. Just that aspect of the stories alone cracks up my 6 year old. They put stinging worms in someone's knickers to get even for an offense. Antics on the verge of misbehavior but pulling back from the brink of being a "bad influence". I highly recommend all of this series for loads of fun entertainment. We own the books as well now but listening to them narrated is so much better. It really captures that Viking feeling.

Brown's forte is amusing and educating small fry on dealing with emergencies. Every boy and girl who has suffered the indignity of a stubborn baby tooth will feel for poor Arthur. Alone among his animals friends, he can't force his first tooth to fall. Neither steak, corn on the cob, peanut brittle nor any stern measure works on the thing. And here's Muffy with a whole jar of teeth at show-and-tell time; she's collected two dollars for each! Arthur mopes as his peers show off the gaps in their mouths. But in the end, he can smile as widely as the other kids. Thanks to an encounter with mean Francine, Arthur winds up with the tooth in his paw, ready for the fairy to trade something of value for it. Brightly colored cartoons of the active anthropomorphs illustrate the story, sure to be enjoyed as much as its nine predecessors.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3 Arthur faces the same kind of physical dilemma solved in Arthur's Eyes (1979) and Arthur's Nose (1976, both Atlantic: Little). This time he is the only one in his class who hasn't lost a baby tooth. (Arthur and the others are back in Mr. Marco's room, and they obviously are younger than they have been in recent adventures.) Despite his attempts to wiggle his front tooth loose, Arthur is unsuccessfuldespite suggestions from Buster, Sue Ellen, Binky Barnes and other familiar characters. A reassuring visit to the dentist followed by some accidental help from Francine solve the problem. Brown's droll humor helps reassure those who find themselves in Arthur's predicament. The illustrations are bright and lively, contributing to a book certain to please Arthur's many fans. Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, Minn.

Losing A Tooth
By A Customer
Another great book from the Arthur series. The book is about Arthur, the last student in the class to lose his first baby tooth. Some of the other students in the class make fun of Arthur, because he still has all his baby teeth. Other students try to help Arthur's tooth fall out, but nothing works. Finally an accident causes Arthur to lose his tooth. This book teaches children to be patient and to help their friends. It also teaches them that everyone is different. I really like this book.

We LOVE the Arthur books!
By Lynne A. Fletcher
We are first grade students at the Anna Merritt Elementary School. Our teacher did a Marc Brown author study. She read Arthur's Tooth to us and we loved the book. Javeon and Cory liked the part when Arthur wanted to pull out his tooth with his hand. Nicholas and Jacob liked the part when Arthur lost his tooth. Marissa liked the part when Francine knocked Arthur's tooth out. We hope Marc Brown writes a lot more Arthur stories!

Testimony: A Novel, by Anita Shreve

At a New England boarding school, a sex scandal is about to break. Even more shocking than the sexual acts themselves is the fact that they were caught on videotape. A Pandora's box of revelations, the tape triggers a chorus of voices--those of the men, women, teenagers, and parents involved in the scandal--that details the ways in which lives can be derailed or destroyed in one foolish moment.

Writing with a pace and intensity surpassing even her own greatest work, Anita Shreve delivers in TESTIMONY a gripping emotional drama with the impact of a thriller. No one more compellingly explores the dark impulses that sway the lives of seeming innocents, the needs and fears that drive ordinary men and women into intolerable dilemmas, and the ways in which our best intentions can lead to our worst transgressions.

From Publishers Weekly
Shreve's novels (Body Surfing; The Weight of Water) benefit from propulsive plots, and her mixed latest, with its timely theme of debauchery among children of privilege, does not lack in this regard. The first paragraph foreshadows a tragedy in which three marriages are destroyed, the lives of three students at a private school in Vermont are ruined, and death claims an innocent victim. The precipitating event is a sex tape involving three members of the boys' basketball team and a freshman girl. Beginning with an account of the debacle by the Avery School's then headmaster, and segueing to the voices of the participants in the orgy, plus their parents and others touched by the scandal, the narrative explores the widening consequences of a single event. Shreve's character delineation is astute, and the novel's moral questions—ranging from the boys' behavior to the headmaster's breach of legal ethics to the guilt of those involved in the death—are salient if heavy-handed, while the female characters are wicked in the way women have always been stereotypically portrayed. The novel is clever, but the revolving cast of narrators often feels predictable and forced, keeping the novel on the near side of credible. (Oct.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Most reviewers hailed Testimony as a deft, insightful exploration into the tragic, far-ranging effects of a single night. Yet critics diverged on a number of points. Some thought that Shreve's diverse perspectives made the sex scandal and other characters' plights, such as those of the guilt-ridden adults, more immediate. But a few claimed that the fractured narrative distracted from examining the morally gray situation more fully and decreased the overall emotional impact. Character development similarly raised questions. As the reviewer from Los Angeles Times noted, the girl on the tape—portrayed more as vixen than victim—"is Shreve's missed opportunity for an exploration of what drives young girls toward promiscuity." In the end, however, Testimony—like Shreve's other novels—is not always enjoyable, but it's impossible to put down.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Shreve, consummate crafstman and frequent provocateur, is on fire in her latest novel, a mesmerizing read centering on a sex scandal at a prestigious Vermont prep school. The story is laid out in short, dramatic chapters narrated by a chorus of participants and bystanders, from the beleagured headmaster to the heartbroken parents to the vacuous girl at the center of the scandal. Three star basketball players were videotaped having sex with a freshman, and the tape was then posted on the Internet. The reaction is immediate and the results devastating, destroying marriages, ruining futures, and, most horrifying of all, resulting in a death. Part of what makes the novel so riveting is its graphic rehashing of a scandal familiar from newspaper headlines, but most of this affecting novel’s appeal lies in the way it so carefully fills in the nuances often missing from the headlines. One of the boys, the son of local farmers who was attending the elite school on scholarship, had learned a shocking secret about his mother just prior to the incident and, uncharacteristically, had too much to drink. Conversely, the girl ultimately calls the cops, thereby alerting the media, and accuses the boys of rape because it’s easier than having to face the wrath of her father. Shreve views all of the characters, even the most flawed, with a good deal of compassion, revealing the heartbreaking consequences of a single reckless act. --Joanne Wilkinson

One of the Best from Shreve in Years!!!
By Maudeen Wachsmith
Anita Shreve never plays it safe with her books and her latest, Testimony, is no exception.

Avery Academy is a small private school in Vermont. Everyone who attends has been carefully screened and selected to attend. From the rich young freshmen to the athletic seniors tapped for college play; no one attends Avery Academy by chance.

But for Avery Academy, all is not as it seems from outside its gates. Parties, which include alcohol and drugs, still occur and kids still get in trouble. This sets the scene for a horrible sex scandal from which no one will come out unscathed, not the students, not the parents, not the headmaster of the school; and not even the citizens of the town of Avery who don't even usually pay too much attention to what goes on behind the hallowed gates up on the hill just out of town. Parents find that even though they pay for the best education for their children, send them to the best schools available, they still can't protect them. Adults find that passionate desires can have far-reaching effects that can change lives forever.

Told from multiple points of view (I counted 20) in less talented hands the narration could get confusing. But with Shreve, it did not. Perhaps that was because with over a dozen of these narrators we only hear from them once or twice.

However the story essentially belongs to three people: Mike, the headmaster of the school who we get to know the best, and Silas and Noelle, the two star-crossed lovers; Silas the basketball star, the local boy made good, son of average farmers from the town of Avery and Noelle, the talented musician destined for Julliard. As the story of the events of that one evening of sex and alcohol unfolds it is becomes clear that Silas stands to lose it all. But what sets in place such behavior uncharacteristic of the normally mild-mannered youth is at the crux of the rest of the story.

A graphic beginning describes the events of that tragic evening; and this is so graphic that it could tend to turn off some readers, readers who may be unfamiliar with Shreve's work. But those who have come to know and trust Shreve as an author will be compelled to keep reading and be certainly glad they did as the events unfold, a bit at a time, through the voices of not only Mike, Silas, and Noelle, but parents, classmates, and the other students involved in the scandal. We also hear from a reporter who eventually wins the Pulitzer for his reporting of the events.

However as the story develops, readers see that the scandal is only the tip of the iceberg for a greater tragedy that will even more deeply affect those involved.

This is Shreve at her best. She tells a compelling story so eloquently that is one of those deemed "unputdownable" -- be sure to start this one early in the day so you will have plenty of time to finish as once you begin it, you will not be able to stop turning the pages.

"The consequences of that one night have been catastrophic."
By E. Bukowsky
A firestorm erupts when a dormitory parent confiscates a tape in which three boys engage in intimate acts with a fourteen-year-old girl at a private school. The young people who appear in the tape attend Avery Academy in Vermont. Anita Shreve's "Testimony" examines this incident from every possible angle, using a Rashomon-like approach. She demonstrates how difficult it is to learn the truth when various witnesses offer conflicting opinions about what happened and who should bear the responsibility.

Mike Bordwin, the headmaster of Avery Academy, is shocked when he views the tape and sees Robert Leicht, and Silas Quinney, both eighteen, and James Robles, nineteen, behaving inappropriately with a pretty young freshman after an evening of heavy drinking. The author provides many perspectives besides Bordwin's, including those of the participants, the parents, Silas's girlfriend, a newspaper reporter, a roommate of the victim, a police officer, a cafeteria worker, an ER nurse, the dean of students, and a law professor. It soon becomes apparent that the story changes according to who tells it, and that there is plenty of blame to go around.

Using a straightforward and powerful prose style, Anita Shreve explores a number of thought-provoking and timely themes: The abuse of alcohol among young people is "starting at an earlier age and [is] both more habitual and more intense that it had been just a decade before"; students who attend private schools and who are athletically talented may behave recklessly because they feel "privileged"; when reporters grab hold of a scandalous story, they often transform a human tragedy into a media circus; our misdeeds may destroy not only our lives but also those of our friends and family. "Testimony" is a searing and powerful indictment of a society that, in many ways, has lost its moral compass, and for that, everyone pays a price.

thought-provoking
By Victoria J. Livingston
I'm a diehard fan of Anita Shreeve, and this book kept my rapt attention and I consider it one of her finest.
It's about a sex scandal at a private high school in New England and shows how one event can seriously alter the path of one's life--in fact, this event devastated many lives. One learns of a videotape early on in the book, but the sex scenes are tastefully depicted.
What I found interesting is that at least one of the boys involved is a very sympathetic character and the girl, who one might assume to be the victim, is depicted as manipulative and callous. I certainly could feel for the mother whose son committed suicide (we know this up front--in the beginning we know this even will ruin many lives, we're just not sure who and how).
As a writer, I found it curious that she mixes up point of view--first, third and even second, which is usually a no-no in writing; and she mixes up past and present tense. I was looking for a review to see what others thought about that. I assume she did it experimentally, and because she is a famous writer, she did it because she could. I found it to be a little disconcerting--the change of point of view and tense--but it did not detract from the story itself, which was quite riveting.
What I really like about her writing is that it's not just escape fiction. There is a message about how one event can serious change one's life--in this case, quite devastatingly. In a way, the book is about the negative consequences of sex--how teenage boys can be easily seduced and in another case, how an affair can damage lives, but it's not moralistic. I think it is very true that one event, one bad decision, can have a serious impact on people's lives.
I would definitely recommend the book. The characterization is rich. There are a variety of personalities and she's quite adept at getting inside the skin of each and every one.
