An interesting change of pace
By ChibiNeko
This volume is a bit of a change from the previous way Yen Press has been releasing the series. While the previous arcs would be released in separate volumes, this book collects both volumes of the Onisarashi-Hen arc (Demon Exposing Arc). It's also a bigger size than the previous volumes are, so it won't match up with the previous volumes.

First off, you don't really have to have read the previous books in the series to be able to enjoy this volume. You'll still feel like you're missing a lot, but the tension will still be present. At this point in the series they haven't fully explained all of the mysteries behind Oyashiro's Curse, so you'll be just as confused as the average Higurashi reader is.

What I liked most about this was that it addressed what happened to the villagers who no longer lived in the village. This takes place immediately after one of the failed summers of 1983, so it's interesting to see the ex-villagers' reactions to everything. It's very much a new story point for people to focus on, although I'll admit it left me with more questions than answers. For some reason I feel like this volume was far more gruesome although it's no more or less violent than previous volumes. It's still well done, but it just seems more visible, possibly because this volume helps break up some of the repetition of earlier volumes.

I did enjoy this volume, although I can't help but wish that it was the same size as my other volumes. I love that the bigger size makes the artwork easier to look at but I'll still notice it on my shelves.

Well worth buying, though.

Decent, all things considered
By Anonymous
Even though it's a 'side story', it is definitely Higurashi. Story wise, I'd say this is decent. After reading it, I felt a bit let down, the suspense factor and body count was just a bit lacking compared to the main stories. But, there is no reason not to get this story, if you are a fan of the series.

13, rue Thérèse: A Novel, by Elena Mauli Shapiro

American academic Trevor Stratton discovers a box full of artifacts from World War I as he settles into his new office in Paris. The pictures, letters, and objects in the box relate to the life of Louise Brunet, a feisty, charming Frenchwoman who lived through both World Wars.
As Trevor examines and documents the relics the box offers up, he begins to imagine the story of Louise Brunet's life: her love for a cousin who died in the war, her marriage to a man who works for her father, and her attraction to a neighbor in her building at 13 rue Thérèse. The more time he spends with the objects though, the truer his imaginings of Louise's life become, and the more he notices another alluring Frenchwoman: Josianne, his clerk, who planted the box in his office in the first place, and with whom he finds he is falling in love.

From Publishers Weekly
Shapiro's debut, an imaginative, sensual rendering of a Parisian woman's life, is told through the voice of Trevor Stratton, a young American scholar and translator working at a university in Paris. Stratton finds a box filled with objects dating back to WWI that once belonged to Louise Brunet, and his fascination with the box's contents—postcards, handkerchiefs, love letters, and other vintage keepsakes—leads him to imagine what Brunet's life in Paris might have been. What Stratton isn't aware of at first is that the box was left for him by Josianne, a secretary at the university, who is using the box and its contents to measure Stratton's romantic worthiness. As Stratton unfolds Brunet's story against the background of WWI battlefields and several inventions—a lover, Camille Victor, who dies in battle; a resulting unhappy marriage to husband Henri; and a passionate affair with a married neighbor, Xavier Langlais—he gradually comes to realize that Josianne is the source of his archival inspiration. The book is illustrated with photos of the actual objects owned by Shapiro, cleverly used as the novel's framing device. (Feb.)

From Booklist
This ambitious first novel from Paris-born Shapiro centers on a box of WWI-era artifacts, depicted in color throughout the book, found by American academic in Paris Trevor Stratton (it was purposefully left for him by his mysterious new secretary). From photographs and miscellaneous objects, Stratton pieces together “a record” of the life of their owner, Madame Louise Brunet—a real person, incidentally, who lived in the Paris apartment above Shapiro’s, and whose mysterious, unclaimed belongings Shapiro really owns. At turns truly exciting and overflowing with imagination, the novel is full of intriguing characters: Louise’s boring husband, Henri; her talented young piano student, Garance; and her new neighbor, Xavier, to whom she is magnetically drawn. This gimmicky tale unravels somewhat when Stratton, apparently in a fever-dream, begins to confuse his life with Louise’s and implicates himself in the history in which he’s become so involved. Puzzle-lovers will be curious to check out the book’s online counterpart, in which they can view 3-D versions of the book’s images. --Annie Bostrom

A beautiful, creative book
By Leslie
This beautifully written and illustrated book is a magical tale woven around a box of artifacts owned by the author. They tell the story of Louise Brunet, a woman who lived in the early part of the 20th century, as imagined by Trevor Stratton, an American academic working in present day Paris.

Trevor discovers a mysterious box of letters and mementoes in his office that was secretly left there by his secretary. He becomes enchanted by the objects; old love letters, notes, faded photos, pieces of music even a pair of gloves. As he examines each of them he begins to write about their significance in a series of letters to someone identified only as `Sir' and in doing so creates the story of Louise. At the same time Trevor is becoming more aware of his secretary and the role she plays in his discovering the objects.

Louise is not what I would consider a typical woman of the 1920's. Her thoughts, desires and actions are more consistent with those of someone living today. But then I would remind myself that I was experiencing Trevor's fantasy of Louise's life. Childless and married to a man of her father's choosing, Louise suffered heartbreak when the love of her life was killed in The Great War. While she loves her husband, he is not the man of her dreams. She wants a child. She wants passion. She has neither.

Louise is an intriguing and complex woman; she also has a naughty streak. Thinking about a pair of lace gloves she is wearing while in church causes her mind to wander off on an imagined sexual fantasy. Another time she makes a false confession to shock a priest. She has a desire to sleep with her new neighbor and writes him anonymous letters while at the same time she invites him and his wife to dinner.

Throughout the pages the book is illustrated with color photos of the actual objects which were the inspiration for the novel. Each of the photos are also displayed on an interactive website which can be reached through links in the book, a wonderful enhancement to the story. This is a book that must be seen to be appreciated. Go take a look at that gorgeous site; you will not be disappointed; you will be intrigued.

Love story, romance and fantasy, this is a clever and captivating story that is at times both sexy and adult. It is a puzzle that keeps you wondering until the very end when all the pieces ultimately fall into place. An enjoyable read.

A memorable read
By Novel Chatter
13 Rue Therese is a valentine to romance, lasting love and the art of the treasure hunt for the saved mementos that tell the stories of our lives.

I became aware of this book shortly after learning about the death of an elderly Parisian woman, and the discovery of her long abandoned apartment, a virtual time capsule of her life some seventy years ago. The two things had nothing to do with each other, except they were both about the bits of memories that make up our lives. My curiosity about 13 Rue Therese was peaked.

Elena Mauli Shapiro chose to tell the story of piano teacher Louise Brunet through the eyes of American professor Trevor Stratton. Statton uncovers an old box of mementos and his life if changed by the old pressed flowers, letters, cards, dated photographs and random tidbits that we hang on to for memories' sake. Trevor falls in love with the woman who treasured these pieces of a life remembered.

Shapiro brilliantly allows the reader to fall in love with Louise also, by showing us pictures of the actual items from the box. Each chapter is full of photos of documents, ink pens, a flowered handkerchief, a brooch, a rosary and the other wonderful things that draw the reader deeper into Louise's story.

Ms. Shapiro's website tells us that 13 Rue Therese is inspired by real life. She says:

"When I was a little girl growing up in Paris in the early eighties, an old woman who lived a few floors up from my apartment died alone. Her name was Louise Brunet. None of her remaining relatives came to fetch her belongings, so the landlord had to clear them all out. He let the other tenants in the building scavenge through her stuff and take home silverware, jewelry, whatever they wanted. My mother salvaged a small box filled with mementos: old love letters from WWI, mesh church gloves, dried flowers, a rosary--many objects worth nothing but memories. This box is the sepulcher of Louise Brunet's heart. As I have carried it through life and across the world, I have always intended to write a book out of it."

I enjoyed this book very much, it's richly told by someone who feels the emotions she so lovingly shares with the reader. The storyline is sadly heart breaking, sweet and somehow gritty at the same time. Plot lines bring surprises both good and not so good, but always believable and poignant.

If I seem vague it's because I hope I've given you just enough to want to read this book.

Another interesting addition is the use of little fleur-de-lis symbols for QR codes found in the back of the book. These will link readers to the book's website [...]
where they will discover special 3-D renderings of the images in the book, as well as reading group guides, exceprts, audio and video clips, and essays by the author.

I bet you fall in love with this book too.

A gift!
By Alison's
A gift.

This special book got me out of a reading funk I had a few months ago. It came to me wrapped in beautiful paper with a note from the editor, Reagan Arthur. I opened it, hoping to discover something new and exciting. What I didn't realize at the time was that I would spend the entire 270 pages unwrapping this precious gift.

Each page brought something new - a photograph, a letter, a piece of fabric from a life of a woman I would never meet, a woman that was not even real, but a woman whom I would know.

This was the journey of Trevor Stratton, and it was my pleasure to take it with him. Stratton is an American professor living in Paris and one day he finds something in his office. Imagine finding a box of photographs and letters belonging to someone you don't know, and slowly learning about this person and falling in love with them.

Louise Brunet seemed like a typical girl in the 1920s...but as we unwrapped pieces of her life, we realized she was anything but typical. In the beginning of her story, she suffers loss and lives a simple life...but then things get saucy.

I don't want to give away too much of this book - I want you to unwrap this gift yourself!

Sassy not Sweet~
By Pacey1927
"Where There is a Wolf, There's a Way" is the third book in the Monster High series by Lisi Harrison. If you have read one of the first two books, you know that this series is light and easily aimed at middle school children. This is odd to me because the toys and cartoons seemed to be aimed at children even younger than this.

Still as an adult I read these books. Why? Because they are clean, cute, and they entertain me. The third book is as good as the first two. Clawdeen the werewolf is supposedly the main character in this volume, but the book splits time between so many different viewpoints that I am not really sure if she actually does have the most page time. However the big build up in the book is Clawdeen's "Sassy Sixteen" birthday party. After all, who wants to be `Sweet'? The bigger story arc continues in that the normies are all aware of the existence of the monsters and most, but not all, have been outed. Many RAD families decide to move away for awhile and their houses and workplaces are left abandoned. Clawdeen's family moves into the hotel that they own and close it up to the public. Duece's family heads to Greece. Lala goes off with her uncle. How will those who remain in town get their friends back? How can they make the normies understand and accept them?

I applaud the series for its themes of acceptance and individuality but it makes me chuckle how quickly the big problems are resolved. That's nothing new: Look at the big problems the Ingalls were able to overcome in 60 minutes of tv in "Little House on the Prarie"! Still this is easy entertainment and there is nothing in the books to worry over your children reading.

My 9 year old daughter loves all thing Monster High, books included. She has read all four books in the series and has loved reading them all. Not much of a literary challenge for voracious readers like my daughter, by fun and imaginative just the same.

Wolf Out
By Paul Jutras
I read all the Monster High books so far and think each one gets even better than the last. Ike's Bluff: President Eisenhower's Secret Battle to Save the World, by Evan Thomas

Evan Thomas's startling account of how the underrated Dwight Eisenhower saved the world from nuclear holocaust.

Upon assuming the presidency in 1953, Dwight Eisenhower set about to make good on his campaign promise to end the Korean War. Yet while Eisenhower was quickly viewed by many as a doddering lightweight, behind the bland smile and simple speech was a master tactician. To end the hostilities, Eisenhower would take a colossal risk by bluffing that he might use nuclear weapons against the Communist Chinese, while at the same time restraining his generals and advisors who favored the strikes. Ike's gamble was of such magnitude that there could be but two outcomes: thousands of lives saved, or millions of lives lost.

A tense, vivid and revisionist account of a president who was then, and still is today, underestimated, IKE'S BLUFF is history at its most provocative and thrilling.

Review
Praise for IKE'S BLUFF:

"With grace, insight, and originality, Evan Thomas has written a brilliant and engaging book about the most important of subjects: how close we came to Armageddon in the seemingly placid 1950s. Thomas's Eisenhower is a canny savior, a president who kept the peace through feint and bluff. No one writes more astutely or more honestly than Evan Thomas. This is the work of a master of storytelling at his best."―Jon Meacham, author of Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power

"Evan Thomas has written an insightful and penetrating study of my father, Dwight D. Eisenhower. Dad was a hard man to know; he played it close to the chest. So despite my extensive exposure to him throughout forty six years, I still found myself learning new aspects, some of which, I must admit, are a bit painful. But the balance that Thomas achieves between Eisenhower the public servant and Eisenhower the man is, in my opinion, as close to the mark as we are likely to see."―John Eisenhower

"Evan Thomas's profoundly important book shows how the card-playing general who did as much as anyone to win World War II became the president most adroit at preserving peace. Behind his open smile, Eisenhower was a secretive and subtle leader with quiet moral courage. By projecting confidence while keeping his intentions concealed, he became the model of a nuclear-age peacekeeper. Thomas has produced a fascinating history that is also a brilliant guide to great leadership."―Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs

"Dwight Eisenhower was a great general and President because he was a great leader, and Ike's Bluff uncracks the code. Evan Thomas's original and fascinating book is an immersion in the Eisenhower School of Leadership, with lessons not only for Presidents and military officers but leaders in other arenas of American life operating in moments of both tranquility and rapid change. Especially in these times, Thomas's book is an essential reminder that strong leadership can be exercised with kindness, morality and respect for opponents."―Michael Beschloss, author of The Conquerors

"[Thomas is] a five-star biographer who blows apart that image [of Ike as a bumbling old man] with devastating detail."―Vanity Fair

"A bustling, anecdotal book with a high-concept premise. [Thomas] approaches the ever more changeable Eisenhower legacy with new and intriguing questions."―Janet Maslin, The New York Times

"Well-researched and highly readable...Thomas' account is sure to appeal to older readers who can recall the mandatory duck-and-cover drills in the classroom and to others with an interest in a fascinating and pivotal period when the nation was in better hands than many at the time probably realized."―The Associated Press

"Thomas has written a book that elucidates Eisenhower's wisdom for general readers."―Richmond Times-Dispatch

"A thoroughly researched, tightly organized and briskly written biography...Thomas is especially skilled at bringing characters of the era to life..."―James Ledbetter, Washington Post

"Highly absorbing."―Tom Alderman, Huffington Post

"An imaginative, approachable volume that may well accelerate Eisenhower's slow but seemingly inexorable movement toward presidential greatness. Evan Thomas is right. The greatest victories of the man who helped win World War II were 'the wars he did not fight."―Boston Globe

"An enjoyable book, fast-moving and packed with anecdotes."―Los Angeles Times

"Engaging and insightful...Thomas' treatment is valuable...for the verve of its telling and convenience of bring disparate and specialized sources together."―National Interest

"Incisive and direct...Evan Thomas brings considerable rhetorical power to his examination of the Eisenhower presidency."―Dallas Morning News

Excellent Narrative, Though Nothing New Here as Scholarship
By Captain Hornblower
As a historian who has done research on Eisenhower, and as an admirer of the General/President, I have been waiting with great anticipation for Evan Thomas' book. I have had my copy since Tuesday, and have been reading it every spare moment I can get since I acquired it.

I agree with Thomas' overall thesis of the book, which is that Eisenhower was long overlooked as a President. Historians like Arthur Schlesinger and others from his generation wrote off Ike as the bubble-head who played golf for eight years as President. Therefore, any book that shows the falsehood of that assessment and presents a more accurate picture of Eisenhower's presidency is welcome.

In terms of Thomas' scholarship on Eisenhower and his thesis on Ike's presidency, the author does not really present anything new in his narrative. The assessment of Eisenhower as a cunning and insightful President who staved off war with the communist block was one that was already successfully pioneered by both Stephen Ambrose and Fred Greenstein back in the 1980's. The work of those two authors (Ambrose's Eisenhower-the President and Greenstein's Hidden Hand Presidency) started the modern age of scholarship on Eisenhower. That work has continued to produce work on Eisenhower's presidency. In recent years, new work from Jean Edward Smith and Jim Newton have also continued to support Ike's importance as a president. Therefore, if you are already someone who is well read on Eisenhower, you are not going to find much that is new on his presidency with Thomas' work.

That being said, this fact should not detract too much from Thomas' work on its own merit. Thomas' narrative is well composed, well researched, and an example of great historical storytelling at its finest. Those readers who are already familiar with the history of Eisenhower's presidency will still enjoy this book as a reaffirmation of Ike's importance to American history as a president. For those who are not familiar with Eisenhower's presidency, and thus not familiar with earlier scholarship on Ike, will learn much from Thomas' book.

I thoroughly recommend this book for both Ike aficionados and the uninitiated to Eisenhower's history. Thomas' book confirms the place of Eisenhower as one of our most important presidents. The author effectively presents the story of a president who now ranks in the top tier of U.S. Presidents for both his skills and his accomplishments in that office.

A Complex President
By Paul
This is a good book on Eisenhower during his presidency. Evan Thomas gives an excellent narrative, and it reads so well that there are times that you resent the call to dinner and are reluctant to put the book down.

A most recent biography Eisenhower in War and Peace by Jean Edward Smith continued my interest in Eisenhower and thus, the purchase of this book. Even after reading the story, it is still hard to define this man. You would think that the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe would have been a hard lined supporter of a strong military, but Ike was everything but that. He knew the high cost of the military, and during his presidency he worried about the smoke and mirrors that the Pentagon and their scores of generals were constantly using to promote more and improved weaponry. Ike had seen it all, and he saw it in terms that the average man could understand, for example in translating the cost of a destroyer versus the social benefits that could be attained with the same money for schools, hospitals, etc., and he was the one who warned of the military industrial complex. He simply mistrusted the people that he knew the best through decades of service to his country.

As his son once said, that in forty six years of knowing him, there were things that he still did not know about hsi father, as he held his cards close to his chest. Eisenhower during his career was careful of his friends and I got the impression that he trusted no one, maybe with the exception of his family.

His greatest challenge during his years in office was the recognition of the new technology that resulted in the capacity to wage atomic (or nuclear) war. For some time, he struggled with the very concept that man had at last developed weaponry that could destroy mankind and he was horrified by it. His maturation continued as advanced concepts arrived to show how artillery could be fitted with nuclear warheads, torpedos, and even a rocket launcher that could be fired from a jeep and whose blast would kill not only the enemy in the area but the very soldiers who launched the demon. And there were times that he felt, especially in Euroope that a nuclear response would be the last ditch effort against overwhelming numbers of Soviets.

Eisenhower from a personal side, was an excellent and brutal bridge player and early in his career with the Army, he had to quit playing poker because he had taken so much money from fellow officers that it went beyond just a game or comradery. Indeed, he held his cards close to his chest and much of this followed with the mannner that he treated his subordinates. John Foster Dulles is an interesting case in point. While many of the intellectuals scorned Dulles (Dull, Duller, Dulles) Ike kept him for years as Secretary of State until he died of cancer. The book tells little about Richard Nixon which is understandable but there was talk of dropping him from the ticket for the second run.

Also of interest is Ike's development of the interstate highway system. We take it for granted today, but Ike felt that it was necessary for people to get out of cities quickly in the event of nuclear attack.

There is interesting information on Krushchev and his insecurites and dealing with Eisenhower. Finally the author shows how when Kennedy failed with the Bay of Pigs, Ike explained to him how the CIA had bungled this operation and that JFK had not gathered all the information and conducted extensive meetings to examine the proposal from a variety of sources.

All in all, a good book. As the previous reviewer stated, there is no new material, but all of it is presented well and in a fast pace and the reader will enjoy this work immensely

The "Ike" we need to know
By L. Y. Jones
Anyone who grew up in the 1950s remembers the stereotype of Ike as a Mr. Bluster-esque fuddy-duddy, inevitably compared unfavorably with the youthful New Frontiersmen of JFK's presidency. How wrong this is! The great strength of Evan Thomas's reporting on Ike is that we see him here not only as the leader of the Free World (a title he earned the hard way during World War II) and a judicious statesman -- but as a genuine human being, with anger, passions, and profound wisdom -- displayed with the likes of Churchill and Krushchev but also with his own family (human but not always endearingly). We see him jousting with the cowboys in the CIA and throwing a golf club at his doctor. Thomas has made wonderful use of the intimate diaries and papers of his secretary, his doctor, and the Dulles brothers (themselves fascinating cases) -- as well as revealing interviews with his children -- to create the best portrait we have of Eisenhower, the man who made some of the wisest and most difficult decisions of the 20th century. Thomas's book advances the revisionist scholarship on Eisenhower to give us a fully realized portrait of a man who was up to the demands of the job -- something we wish could be said for more Presidents.

A Midsummer's Nightmare, by Kody Keplinger

Whitley Johnson's dream summer with her divorcé dad has turned into a nightmare. She's just met his new fiancée and her kids. The fiancée's son? Whitley's one-night stand from graduation night. Just freakin' great.

Worse, she totally doesn't fit in with her dad's perfect new country-club family. So Whitley acts out. She parties. Hard. So hard she doesn't even notice the good things right under her nose: a sweet little future stepsister who is just about the only person she's ever liked, a best friend (even though Whitley swears she doesn't "do" friends), and a smoking-hot guy who isn't her stepbrother...at least, not yet. It will take all three of them to help Whitley get through her anger and begin to put the pieces of her family together.

Filled with authenticity and raw emotion, Whitley is Kody Keplinger's most compelling character to date: a cynical Holden Caulfield-esque girl you will wholly care about.

Keplinger Is A Hit!
By Kristin Feliz
I love Kody Keplinger. #FACT.

I love her not only because she's one of the SWEETEST authors EVER (She allowed me to bombard her with fangirl love a couple of weeks ago at an author event) , but because she's not afraid to take risks and write the sort of books that other YA authors would shy away from. You know...the kind that bring up real teenage issues. Like...well...sex.

With A Midsummer's Nightmare, Keplinger wastes absolutely NO time in getting things started. We begin with a questionable hook-up and shiz hits the fan shortly after. Guys, I LOVE it when shiz hits the fan!! Our main protagonist, Whitney, is introduced to her father's shiny new family and she's left to pick up the pieces of a very imperfect life. While it was incredibly heartbreaking to see Whitley struggle with the idea of her father moving on and leaving his old life (including her) behind, I loved watching those relationships develop.

Whitley's future stepsister, for example, was a gem, but the real charmer was Nathan (Oh, Nathan!) who won me over with his geeky and incredibly charming personality. He's not the typical bad-boy I fall for (*cough* Adrian Ivashkov *cough*) but he's innocent, patient, kind AND let's face it, the kind of boyfriend I hope for in real life.

Swoon worthy? OH Yeah!

But cute boys and character development aside, this wasn't your typical, one-dimensional novel. There were layers and layers of issues that Whitley dealt with honestly and realistically. Keplinger should be praised for the way she handles topics like divorce, sex and self-esteem. She has a way of making it empowering...if that makes any sense. Don't get me wrong, these characters are usually flawed and a little messed up, but they rise above it because they're strong enough to admit that they're flawed!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, it takes a HELL of an author to pull this off and Keplinger does it wonderfully.

Ms. Keplinger, I'll be there for your next book and the one after that! You're a young and spectacular talent that can't be missed!

Keplinger's Best Effort So Far!
By Christina (A Reader of Fictions)
When I read The DUFF a couple of years ago, I really, really liked it, though I didn't expect to because of the title. However, my memory being the mostly useless contraption that it is quickly faded. Jenni of Alluring Reads reviewed The DUFF a few months back and completely panned it. She pretty much loathed the book, and that stunned me. While Jenni and I certainly don't always agree, we often do, and I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about A Midsummer's Nightmare. Well, I still don't know for sure about The DUFF, but I loved this one.

For one thing, Keplinger writes like a teenager so well. Both here and with The DUFF, I don't think anyone open-minded can deny that she has the lingo and cadence and emotional landscape down. In a lot of books, I mentally age the characters up in my head, because their circumstances (absent parents, not actually attending any high school classes) and way of conversing just do not necessarily seem teenage. In Keplinger's, even though her characters do things I may rather wish a 14 or 17 or any age person wouldn't do, I never feel for a moment like they're not teenagers.

To be entirely frank, though, this book did begin with a pretty major disappointment for me. I was convinced that this book was inspired by Shakespeare. For some misguided reason, I even though I had read a synopsis and that it was set around a high school production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ummm, seriously, what the hell? Where does my brain get this stuff? That's not what it was about at all. I confess. I was VERY wrong. However, that title! It promises Shakespeare, and I wanted it okay.

However, A Midsummer's Nightmare did turn out to be inspired by a classic work of fiction, just not the bard's. Actually, Kepliger got some amount of inspiration from Catcher in the Rye, a book I personally really did not like. The connection, while not an incredibly strong one, lies in the mental state of the heroine, who shuts herself off from emotions by making bad life choices. She doesn't see the point in friends, because people are just phonies anyway. I'm quite proud of myself for having picked up on the reference before I read the blurb. Also interesting is that her step-family's last name is Caulfield. Nice one.

Roughly the first half of this book really hurts to read. It's a good hurt, the kind John Mellencamp might approve of, a straight punch right to the emotional gut. Whitley makes so many bad choices. She gets completely wasted, hooks up with whatever guy she can find, and avoids any sort of real emotional interaction. In the opening scene, Whitley wakes up on the morning following graduation to discover that she's in someone else's bed, having had sex with some (admittedly quite attractive) guy whose name she does not even know. Worse still, he wants to chat, when she just wants to get the hell out and not talk about it, so she tells him she never, ever wants to see him again, which, conveniently, shouldn't be too hard since he's moving.

Her parents, in stereotypical YA style, neglect her. Whitley's mother and father divorced six years previously, and she was glad of that, but her mother never got over it, still ranting and raving about how awful her father is to this day, and her father only spends time with her once a year. Still, she lives for these summers with him. Unsurprisingly, Whitley wants to throw a fit when she discovers that her father has sold his quirky condo by the beach and moved into a suburban monstrosity of boredom. With his new fiancee. And her two children. One of whom is that guy she had sex with the night of graduation. Apparently, his name is Nathan.

Whitley has always been called unflattering things for her drunken, boy-seducing ways: slut, skank, easy, whore. That never really bothered her before. In this new small town, with less people to blend into, the label really starts to hurt, particularly when someone she cares about calls her a whore or when she discovers a Facebook group formed to talk about her lewd behavior. Obviously, this is a hugely touchy subject, and I was really concerned about how it would be handled. Thankfully, Keplinger, after setting the stage and delivering a harshly truthful depiction of how cruel teens can be, sends precisely the message that I was hoping for. Since I know these issues can be an automatic DNF for a lot of people, I want to share Nathan's apology for having called Whitley a whore:

"'I'm sorry for what I said to you that day.' Nathan's hand slid from my elbow to my wrist. 'It wasn't okay for me to call you a whore. It's not okay for anyone to say that. Not the people online. And definitely not me.'"

What Nathan said was not okay, but he owned up, and he stepped up from there on out to make sure that she never lets her think he truly feels that way. When she doubts herself or blames herself for an attempted rape, he reminds her over and over again that it was in no way her fault. Honestly, I loved Nathan. He messed up in anger, yes, but who doesn't? He wasn't violent, and he apologized wholeheartedly, and was completely supportive from that moment onward. Of course, he also happens to be both nerdy and built, so...can I have one? Seriously, he wears shirts that say things like "MAY THE MASS TIMES ACCELERATION BE WITH YOU" or that have the hand sign for live long and prosper. Also, the boy can kiss. Seriously, if you like hot kissing scenes in books, Keplinger has got your back. Just make sure you have some sort of fanning implement handy.

Even better, as much as I loved the way that Nathan and Whitley's relationship slowly evolved, that was not the central plot line of the book. A Midsummer's Nightmare focuses more on Whitley overcoming her issues with her parents, and learning to not be so self-destructive. Just for the record, I don't think there is anything wrong with her sleeping around or getting drunk occasionally or being a loner, except that those things did not make her happy. She needed to grow, and, as much as she hated it for a while, being thrown into a different family environment was the shock to her system that she really needed.

Keplinger's characterization rocked. Whitley, of course, rocked, confident and broken and funny and bitchy and insecure. However, the others did not take a backseat to her. Nathan, of course, gets quite a bit of development, but I've already talked about him. Bailey, Nathan's younger sister about to start high school, hero worships Whitley. Bailey begins as obnoxious to both Bailey and myself, but grows to be this irresistibly adorable kid. After a rocky start, Whitley does actually help Bailey open up and feel a bit more confident. Also, I have to say how much I loved Whitley's first friend Harrison. He is gay and utterly tenacious, simply determined to make Whitley accept him as a friend. The boy has style and totally has her back, but is also not a stereotype at all. There's a real affection between the two of them that is touching. Even Sylvia, the soon-to-be stepmother gets some good characterization. The only exceptions are Whitley's parents, but that has to do with the plot arc more than anything. Basically, I cared so much for Whitley, Harrison and the Caulfields; I rooted for them so hard.

Any book that can make me feel such a full gamut of emotions and leave me grinning like a fool afterwards, in that insane post-book bliss, has earned that five stars.

An Echo of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
By PEacE OUT
This is eerily similar to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Girl goes to her dad's for the summer, super exited to see him, only to find he's moved to the suburbs with a Stepford-esque fiancé and two blonde preppy kids, without telling his daughter. Daughter doesn't quite fit in (because she's latino in SOTTP and an alcoholic in this story), and her father focuses more on his upcoming wedding than his daughter until she can't take it anymore.

Since they are extremely identical in set up, minus the extra one-night stand with the soon to be stepbrother and subsequent romantic entanglements (SOTTP spared us from that one), I'll compare them to each other. SOTTP story with Carmen was more based in reality. Because the character of Carmen was more realistic. Whitley, on the other hand, was more fun simply because I don't see her ever being a real person. I like to read these YA romance books, not because they're masterpieces of literature with unbelievable character structure, but because they are light on reality providing the perfect escape straight to fantasy-land. I have to say, however, that I preferred Carmen's reaction to the situation over Whit's.
The dads, I'll add, are again too eerily similar to draw any distinction between them. The soon-to-be stepmom had some more depth in this story than SOTTP, given that this book was basically SOTTP Carmen's story stretched to fill an entire book, as did the stepsister. The stepbrothers were entirely different, which is great since he played a main character in this novel. SOTTP stepbrother was actually kind of boring.

I was a little freaked out by how similar these two stories were, even some minor details and plot events are the same. Was Kody Keplinger reading SOTTP before she wrote this?
Not that it's a crime, but it makes me question her originality.
Nevertheless, the book still fulfilled it purpose. Fantasy-land is really nice this time of year.

I found this series to only get better as it progressed
By Books, Vertigo and Tea
Picking up where volume one left off, we continue to follow 15 year old Oz Vessalius after he has managed to escape the Abyss. But what is his "sin"? The series continues to follow Oz, Alice and their counterparts as they begin a journey to uncover the truth, which leads them back to the original site of Oz's coming-of-age ceremony.

I found this series to only get better as it progressed. The way they should. As Oz seeks to uncover his sin, learns about Pandora Hearts and discovers the truth of his own reality and past the series really picks up. The eccentric characters and and mysterious story-line really grabbed my attention. Each chapter left me with a strong desire to know more and try to understand what was happening. This was very hard to put down. Take the unique plot added to a sort of dark, wonderland twist and you have success for anyone who enjoys dark anime!

Great series!!
By Desiree N. Boger
When I first read Pandora Hearts, I wasn't sure what I would find. The series opens up to a dark sinister plot revealing plenty but enoguh to keep you reading. I found this story very unique and the art wonderful. There are a lot of Mangas that I read out there that have characters that look/seem the same or the plot of the story is very similar to that of another. Not Pandora Hearts. Each character is unique with their own personalities. I found myself smiling quite a bit when the characters interact with each other. I also must say the series has it's own insanity to it. If you're looking for a new series to start, I think this is a good one. :)

Emotional, dark and disturbing. Great second volume!
By Leaf
From my Goodreads:
"...But to me...it doesn't seem like...you've lost anything that makes you who you are."

"Why do you care about that girl?"

Pandora Hearts continues to throw questions at us, and doesn't take the reader as someone for a low IQ. Rather, it treats you like one of the characters, twisting your emotions and playing with you. It's rare to find a manga series that doesn't feed everything to you. PH takes you seriously, and it doesn't hold back on depressing themes, love and friendship. And this is handled in a very mature manner.

The art is gorgeous as always, and expressions are drawn with such diversity that every scene stands on its own.The second volume opens with Oz asking Gil why his father despises him. From there, we learn more about Break and Sharon, the Baskervilles, and why Oz has been condemned.

Because Oz made a contract with Alice who is a Chain-someone born in the Abyss-this makes Oz an illegal contractor. An illegal contractor is branded with an incuse, which is a clock-like tattoo that tells how much time the illegal contractor has left before they are devoured by the Abyss...we quickly see an example of this and it shakes Oz to the core. Break and Sharon decided not to tell Oz about this, because he needed to witness the horror himself. Kind of cruel if you ask me.

Despite all of this, Oz smiles and hides behind his cheery mask. I can instantly relate to hiding behind a smile, and it was even more convincing when you would see glimpses of another part of Oz that proved he was more twisted than you believed.Even Break confronts him about this and we see Oz's guard slip under Break's scrutiny. Break and Sharon themselves are hiding lots of secrets. We learn who Raven truly is, how long Oz has actually been in the Abyss for, and why Break and Sharon still look they way they do after all that time passing. We even get a little taste about why Oz was cast into the Abyss...and it isn't pretty.

Even though more questions are raised than answered, I was intrigued and engrossed completely. This volume had a strong emphasis on friendship, loyalty, death and love. One of Alice's memories is returned to her this volume, and in it, we learn about a dark side of Oz. While Oz still thinks Sharon is cute, he definitely seems to feel something towards Alice. He blushes a few times and it so adorable.

Pandora Hearts is not a series that you can pick up and expect to understand everything right away. Go with the flow, become invested or interested in the characters and the world, and you should easily enjoy it. Don't try to make assumptions about what's going on, because you will most likely be proven wrong. The writing is strong and it is obvious the mangaka mapped out every little detail. Definitely will be continuing the series.

The Complete Hardcover Twilight Saga
By Amazon Customer
This set includes all the books from the Twilight Saga, which includes; Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and lastly Breaking Dawn. The books themselves are exactly likes the ones you find at any bookstore, in hardcover. The case it comes in has all the book covers displayed on each side minus the names of each book.
What is included that you couldn't normally get by buying each one individually elsewhere are 4 5x7-ish cards that have the cover picture on one side, then quotes from the corresponding book written on the other. for example: one 5x7 has a picture of the twilight cover, hands holding a red apple, then the other side it says, "About three things i was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him--and i didn't know how dominant that part of him might be--that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him." (I included some pictures so you can get a better idea of what they are)

I would recommend this set to those who do not already own the twilight collection(like me) and would like to own all the books(i borrowed them all from a friend). Or of course obsessed twilight fans. There's nothing truly remarkable about the set so i wouldn't go buying this if you already own all the books.

I am very happy with my purchase nonetheless. This saga is one of my favorites.

Gorgeous keepsake collection of all four books in the Twilight series!
By Z Hayes
This is a value buy for those who are contemplating sinking their teeth [pun intended] into Stephenie Meyers' Twilight series as it not only offers all four books, i.e. Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn for a great price, they all come housed in a gorgeous keepsake box. I have all four of the books in hardcover, but I purchased them individually as they were released, and am seriously contemplating getting this boxed set which I can keep as a souvenir, and then use the other books as my reading copies.

Well, for those who are new to the series, the books are in the following order:
Twilight - Bella Swan moves to a small town near Seattle called Forks and meets Edward Cullen, an enigmatic student at her high school who turns out to be a vampire and lives with his clan in a magnificent mansion. As the romance between Bella and Edward blossom, they have to face obstacles such as the physical 'constraints' of being in a mortal-vampire relationship, facing objections from their respective families, and threats from other more vicious vampires.

New Moon - Edward and Bella are parted and Bella is so heartbroken that her life becomes empty and without direction. Enter Jacob Black, the tall, dark and handsome friend from the reservation, La Push who provides Bella with not only friendship but someone she can trust and rely on during a desperate time. Of course, nothing in Bella Swan's life is ever quite so simple and complications crop up once again.

Eclipse - Edward and Bella are back together, much to the disappointment and disgust of Jacob Black, himself now an other-worldly being. Will he convince Bella that he is more worthy of her love or will Edward prevail?

Breaking Dawn - the final instalment in the series. Edward, Bella and Jacob feature prominently here, with the most pivotal question - will Bella sacrifice her mortality for an immortal life with Edward? If so, what are the repercussions?

All in all, the Twilight series makes for an interesting and fun reading experience and this beautiful boxed set for the price offered here on Amazon is definitely a keepsake for fans and new readers alike!

Ghost Liners: Exploring the World's Greatest Lost Ships, by Robert Ballard, Rick Archbold

Presenting the stories of five great ships lost at sea--including "Titanic"--Ballard and Archbold shows readers what it's like to dive down to a gigantic wreck. Marschall's thrilling color illustrations enhance the fateful tales of these majestic vessels.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9-The discoverer of this century's most sought after ship wreckage recounts his exploration of the Titanic. Photographs taken during those dangerous dives plus eerily realistic artwork support the awe and reverence Ballard reveals in his text. In additional chapters he examines other, equally sensational ship disasters of the 20th century. He tells of the Lusitania, the Britannic, the Andrea Doria's collision with the Stockholm, and the Empress of Ireland's sinking in the St. Lawrence River. Each story is accompanied by black-and-white and full-color archival and contemporary photographs, diagrams, and magnificent full-color illustrations. Photographs of the sunken ships and artifacts on the ocean floor and riverbeds add notes of sobering reality to seemingly mythic tales. A few well-chosen quotes from passengers and crew about their experiences add a measure of poignancy. Careful observation of the destroyed ships and historical records reveal the often preventable causes of these accidents. Ballard's Exploring the Titanic (Scholastic, 1988) details his development as an undersea explorer, the drama of the sinking, and the thrill of viewing the ship 70 years after her disappearance. Given the strength of Titanic fever that has gripped public imagination, the stories in Ghost Liners will be devoured by students, history buffs, and all who are fascinated by human tragedy.

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-7. Best known for the undersea discovery of the Titanic, Ballard introduces readers to that shipwreck and four others of the twentieth century: the Empress of Ireland, the Lusitania, the Britannic, and the Andrea Doria, which collided with the Stockholm. Each chapter describes the exploration of one of the wrecks and offers information about the ship's origins, amenities, importance, and why it sank. In each chapter, one passenger is profiled in a sidebar, giving readers a personal story and a photograph to bring the experience more sharply into focus. Exceptionally detailed dramatic paintings by Ken Marschall, show the ships as they appeared on the water, while sinking, and beneath the sea. Many period photos, posters, and sketches set the scene; photographs of undersea exploration show the ships and their artifacts as they appear today. The large, attractive format and informative text combine to make this an appealing book on a subject that continues to fascinate young people. Add this to the Titanic bibliography in the March 15 issue of Booklist. Carolyn Phelan

Review
With haunting photographs and equally memorable large paintings of five great 20th century ocean liners - the Titanic, the Lusitania, the Empress of Scotland, the Britannic and the Andrea Doria - the reader shares in the tragic final hours of these majestic relics of a bygone era of travel. The author's suspenseful narrative (even though we know the outcome) includes accounts of the survival of several child passengers. With the advent of mini-submarines, the sunken wrecks can be visited, and many of the book's ghostly Titanic pictures were taken though the peep hole of such a deep-sea vehicle. Excitement, disbelief, horror and suspense abound in this recounting of the fate of five seemingly "unsinkable" vessels. Truth is, indeed, stranger than fiction. -- From Parents' Choice®

EXCELLENT!!!!

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes studing TITANIC, ANDREA DORIA, LUSITANIA, THE EMPRESS OF IRELAND, OR MY PERSONAL FAVORITE, BRITTANIC. I have studyed these ships most of my life and have found this is the book the best. Dr. Ballard gives a hands on look at these ships with actual photos and paintings by the well know artist, Ken Marshall. If you are in to TITANIC and have read this book, I would recomend that you purchace TITANIC: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY by Don Lynch for the most complete info and photos

Pretty Good Little Book
By tinsleyhappel@aol.com
This was a pretty good little book for the money. However, it was largely a slimmed-down version of Lost Liners, which I highly recommend. Some new pictures were featured, but much of it was rehash.

Left me wanting more.
By Ned Middleton
Personally, I rate Dr Ballard's books; The Discovery of the Titanic, Lost ships of Guadalcanal, Return to Midway and Exploring the Lusitania as some of the finest works on the subject of shipwrecks ever to have been published. On this occasion, however, I am left with a feeling of disappointment at finding such a thin book.

Perhaps anything short of the discovery of another Titanic would always be a disappointment to some - but let us examine the content. Firstly, we have 5 of the world's greatest ever shipwrecks; Titanic, Empress of Ireland, Lusitania, Britannic and Andrea Doria. Each of these vessels was a great ship in its own right and their like will never be seen again. Indeed, entire books have been written about each of them - by this author and by others. As with all great shipwreck stories, there is always an element of mystery - arguments for and against the mine versus torpedo theory for example. Those arguments, in addition to all the many other elements of the overall picture, must always be fully presented and reasoned in order to allow readers to draw their own conclusions.

In this book, the text, photography and excellent (as always) illustrations by Ken Marschall are confined to 56 pages. Quite frankly, that is not enough room for any single great shipwreck - let alone five! Easy to see why I was left wanting more.
