An outstanding biography of an extraordinary figure

Ernie J. King was one of the least known and yet most important figures of American 20th century military history. While others, such as Nimitz and Halsey, gained laurels in the press, King actually defined the strategy, determined who would lead American naval forces across the Pacific, and single-handedly ran the Navy Department throughout the war. Yet he remains almost unknown to modern generations [during a recent visit to the US Naval Academy, an official tour guide -- a retired Naval officer -- told me that King was buried in Arlington cemetery, when in fact he is buried at the Academy].
Mr. Buell addresses this gap with this extraordinary book. Buell tries -- by all available means -- to get at who the man was, what he was like, and what he did -- no easy task considering that King distrusted the press for much of the war, and was almost universally regarded as an SOB within the Navy Department.

Yet reading this book, I came to understand why it took an SOB to accomplish the defeat of Japan simultaneously with that of Germany -- something that Admiral King seems to have understood as well. I felt that at the end of this book, I understood who King was, what motivated him, and what he was like.

The reproduction of King's 2-page memorandum to FDR about Pacific war strategy is an extraordinary document and a classic example of good business writing.

It is unfortunate that Buell's biography of Raymond Spruance does not manage to capture equally the character of Spruance -- admittedly an enigma.

Buell's bibliography is a marvel of critical assessement of sources -- he uses the same style with his Spruance biography and new Civil War history. For someone interested in sources and original material, Buell's syntheses are unparalleled.

My only question is: when will Buell take up the story of another fascinating military figure such as Pershing, Arleigh Burke, or McNair?

A very good, well written biography of WW2 Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King. It covered how his decendants arrived in this country from Scotland and settled in Lorain, Ohio where King was born and raised. How he came about testing and getting his appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. How he subsequently climbed the ladder in rank having fought and taken part in battles from the Spanish-American War, the war with Mexico, World War 1 up to World War 2. How he recieved his first command of a early World War 1 era four piper destroyer, then moved up through submarines, eventually commanding the submarine training base in New London, Conn.,into aviation and earning his wings at the age of 49. Eventually all of this led to his taking charge of the United States fleet Atlantic Ocean just prior to WW 2. At the start of WW2 he was promoted to Commander-in-Chief U.S. Fleet and then inheriting the job of Chief of Naval Operations. Never before has Anyone held both jobs at one time as directed to him by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, making him the eventual head of what would be through his guidance the most powerful naval fleet in the world. Through his careful direction and influence he guided the nation to victory in a two ocean war that encompassed the whole globe. Under his command and direction were names that have a place in history by themselves, Chester Nimitz, William "Bull" Halsey, Raymond A. Spruance, and Marc Mitcher. All together these help shape the outcome of World War 2.

The right man at the right time

To become a great admiral, one must have not only the ambition to reach flag rank, but also the ability to perform well once that rank is attained. In his book, Master of Sea Power, Thomas Buell shows us not only how Ernest King possessed the requisite ambition and ability, but also how history and circumstances cooperated in King's becoming Chief of Naval Operations and Commander in Chief of the United States Fleet during WW2, allowing him to command more ships, men and aircraft than any other admiral in history.

The early part of the book shows King's upbringing and early naval career. Buell documents how King carefully chose among assignments whenever possible in order to make the move that would best bolster his upward mobility toward flag rank. Even when King was surprised, and did not have the time to decide if a certain assignment would aid his career, he performed well any way, such as in his high profile undertakings to salvage submarines S-51 and S-4. The most interesting achievement I found in King's prewar career was his performance in Fleet Problem XIX, in the spring of 1938, wherein a carrier force, commanded by King, successfully "attacked" targets in and around Pearl Harbor.

When the United States' involvement in WW2 started, King was in the right place as commander of the Atlantic fleet, which placed him outside of the chain of command leading from Pearl Harbor back to Washington. King then became both Chief of Naval Operations and Commander-in-Chief of the United States Fleet. As the top admiral in the navy, King was also a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States and ipso facto a member of the Combined Chiefs of Staff with top British Officers. King was a persistent advocate of his own service, who saw the Pacific as its exclusive domain, and he kept up the clarion call for more resources for the theater, despite the "Germany first" strategy that had been declared by the Allies. Perhaps his most strategically influential decision was his push for the Guadalcanal invasion, after which, not only were the Japanese on their heels, but the supply flow to the Pacific was steadily increased.

Buell does not spend a lot of time on battles. This is because once a battle began King's job was over with until the battle ended. What Buell does spend a lot time on is the strategic and diplomatic wrangling in choosing objectives and deciding which admirals to place in command, and which ones to relieve when necessary. King had no tolerance for stupidity or incompetence. He only respected people who stood up to him, and then again only those who showed they were right in doing so. Much of King's most important work was done negotiating at the big conferences with FDR, Churchill and the Combined Chiefs of Staff. It was at these conferences that King reinforced his reputation for being abrupt and tactless, but also a sound thinker and strategist. And although he did not get along well with his British counterparts, mutual respect did exist between them.

One place where Buell could have done differently, I believe, has to do with King's personal life: the assertion that King was a philanderer and perhaps even "downright lecherous." In Buell's chapter on King's command of the Lexington before WW2, he states in the notes that King's "marital infidelity and philandering were common knowledge." That may have been, but Buell does not cite a specific source, nor does he ever point out a specific woman. It may be gentlemanly not to name names, but without attribution to a specific source, it has the ring of gossip, and has found its way into other works, such as Adams' "If Mahan Ran the Great Pacific War," and Tuohy's "America's Fighting Admirals."

Anyone well-read on the Pacific theater in WW2 has at least come across references to Master of Sea Power in the bibliographical notes of subsequent works. Buell has done such a thorough job in documenting King's role and influence as head of the USN in WW2, that other authors must include Buell to give a full picture of anything decided or influenced by King in the course of the war. Any serious enthusiast of the USN's role in WW2 must read this biography, in order to flesh out the meager characterizations found in other works.

Continues the first books with great drawings

This is the continuation of the manga sterilization of the books, and it follows the middle-ish of the book. The story continues the tale of Kraft and Holo's journey to the north, when they come across a real money making opportunity. The author does a real good job at staying true to the books and even keeps one of the characters the same that the anime changed.

The drawings are really well crafted and look somewhat like the anime, but have its own look to it as well. I really love the back and forth banter they have and the creator of the manga kept it in the story and really flows well with the faces the animator made.

Over all I suggest picking this up if you feel like continuing the series, I really enjoyed reading these after reading the books and seeing the anime since they really do a good job in bringing the characters to life in a manga format. If you enjoyed the anime or especially the books, you will enjoy continuing this series as well.

Great Manga Series

The story of Holo and Lawrence continues. I love this series - both as an anime and now for the manga. They continue to run into trouble and adventure as they travel. I can't wait to read the next manga.

a wonderfully crafted story from the classical age

A well constructed opening to this novel of Trojan refugees draws the reader in quickly and never disappoints. This is a wonderfully crafted story which takes place at the end of the age of heroes and the beginning of the story of Rome. Almost hidden behind marvelous storytelling is an excellent conflation of the mythic and heroic tales of the ancient Greek world, and the historic and archeological records related to ancient Greece, the Middle East, ancient Egypt, and pre-Roman Italy.

This is one of those novels whose three dimensional characters grow on the reader to the point that finishing the book is like watching old friends disappearing around the bend. Though Black Ships tells of the many adventures these refugees encounter in their wanderings, real excitement comes from watching as the main characters struggle to find their path - sometimes relying on faith in the whispers of gods; sometimes by trusting their own judgement.

Jo Graham tells the story through a significant female character, and the feminine experience is a major theme of the book. However, she has avoided one of my frequent complaints about novels that strive to give a 'new' point of view. She has done a fine job of "fleshing out" both male and female characters, and giving some of the male characters 'real' lives that are not always told only as they impact the main character/narrator/

This is a great read for anyone who enjoys a well crafted adventure story, but, for those with an interest in the history and mythology of the ancient Mediteranean, this is a real treasure.

Cross the wine-dark sea with Gull--you won't regret it

There's nothing I love so much as sinking into a big fat book that combines the sweep of history with a dash of magic. This book is an adaptation of the Aeneid, from the point of view of the Sybil who, in the poem, guides Aeneas through the underworld.

She's a lot more fleshed out here. Her name is Gull, later known as Linnea and as Pythia, and jumps off the page from the very beginning of chapter one with a self-introduction that reminded me a bit of Phedre's at the beginning of Kushiel's Dart. The wording and the voice are different, but it's the same sort of introduction: This is me. This is who I am. Take me or leave me--and if you take me, I've got a damn good story to tell you.

Gull is the daughter of a Trojan slave. When she is crippled in an accident, her mother realizes she'll be seen as a useless mouth to King Nestor. (Oh, I should explain that Graham posits two separate Trojan Wars in this tale. Gull's mother was abducted in the first; Aeneas fled the city in the second.)

The novel follows Aeneas, Gull, and Aeneas's courageous and sexy captain, Xandros, as they search for a place to call home.

To me, one of the major themes of Black Ships is being human in a world that calls for larger-than-life gods and heroes. You see it with Gull, who operates within a strict set of rules as a priestess, and then throughout the story breaks most of them when the will of the Goddess or the needs of her people demand flexibility. You see it with Neas, whose father is constantly exhorting him to act in a more regal fashion. One of my favorite bits is when Gull is examining the cave near Vesuvius that she will use for the ritual of descent into the underworld, musing about how much work it will take to prepare it--and yet, though she works hard to ready the cave, when the ritual occurs it is governed by forces beyond her human control. I liked the contrast between the human and divine here.

The other major theme is love, and how these three flawed and scarred people find it with each other. I love that you can't clearly say "this character is gay, that one is straight." What it really comes down to is that these three people have a bond that transcends all categories. They're just...well, when reading this book I just can't imagine any of them without the other two.

Beautiful book, and I loved every minute of it. I just wish it had been longer. ;)

(And, y'know, I really ought to go read the Aeneid. I never did read the whole thing, though I was supposed to for class once, and Jo has made me more intrigued by it.)

Generic Title but a good read

As a self professed classics nerd, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Black Ships when I read about it in Entertainment Weekly.

Black Ships is Jo Graham's version of the events of the Aeneid-Aeneas' escape, travels, and subsequent founding of a new city. Our protagonist is Gull, a lowborn acolyte who ascends her mistress' place as Pythia, an oracle of the Lady of the Dead. Gull meets Aeneas and realizes that fate has bound him for a great destiny. She travels with the Trojans, er, Wilusans (Trojans in Hittite) in search of a new home. Their travels take them all over the Mediterranean-from an island of the dead to Byblos to Egypt (where they stay awhile) to the caves of Mt. Vesuvius-and finally into the Underworld itself.

This piece of historical fantasy was an enjoyable read, although a little slow at times. It was difficult for me to read at first because I have such set thoughts on Aeneas' character and how it "should" be but I got over it fairly quickly. I just enjoyed it for what it was-a historical fantasy/romance. I especially enjoyed the disillusioned antics of Egyptian princess Dido, *ahem* I mean, Basetamon.

As the bedraggled group travels from place to place, they are pursued by Neoptolemus (his entrance into a fallen Troy and subsequent murder of King Priam is one of the most haunting scenes of the Aeneid). Unfortunately, Neoptolemus is never more than a vague threat in the distance (literally, they see his sails a couple times), and I would have liked a little more conflict there. The scenery and historical details are thorough, and Graham's writing style is exquisite- it's beautifully simple and yet still so compelling and vivid.

I am looking forward to the Hand of Isis, which is another historical fantasy set during the reign of Cleopatra, the last Ptolemy! It features Charmian, Cleopatra's handmaiden (Get it? Hand of Isis? ) and half sister. I am really curious as to how Graham will portray Cleopatra (I would assume she features prominently in the book, maybe not).

Will Cleopatra be portrayed as a dark, Egyptian sorceress (thanks to Octavian's propaganda) or will she be as she was- a daughter of Ptolemy XII, of Macedonian (not Egyptian!) descent, the first Ptolemy who bothered learning Egyptian mores, language, and who was believed to be the incarnation of Isis.

Well folks, I had high hopes for this book. While I admit that they may have been unfounded since the series was starting to go down hill, I never expected it to be this bad. This is chock full of SPOILERS so if you want to waste your time or decide for yourself stop after this sentence and borrow it from a friend or the library.

It seems James has run out of new ideas, and the few smidgens that is new material is not unexpected, they are things that I at least contemplated as soon as he brings up the whole "Fang must die!" and how fang could be the next step in human evolution. Yep the immortality gene. While that aspect is slightly more thought through than the rest, which seems to be a bunch of previously done ideas at a third the quality, it still doesn't make the cut for me.
Now let's look at all the main plot sections
1) They go to school... yeah how ORIGINAL that is.... yet again a teacher with evil affliliation, Nudge getting all caught up in a 'normal' life (she's 12 and starts dating an almost 16 year old and gets dumped, big whoop), Dylan gets fan girled over, and they dissect a chicken.
2) ARI COMES BACK. Again. and tries to kill fang. again. and is in cahoots with the female portion (save maya who he kills) of Fangs gang. I don't think we need any more words on ari, and I'll only vaguely reference his new speech pattern (hey, sis)
3) Group wanting to kill off the humans. again. This time they want to get rid of 99% though... Who somehow have people everywhere, who conviently happen to pass by fang minutes after he gets out of the desert... James, are you paranoid or just to done with this to be at least mildly realistic.
4) Jeb is on the evil side but thats okay because he's only doing it to bring his dead mutant son back to life right? And after he tries to kill them all again and gets injured in the process (no duh) Max says how they have to help him. oh and Dr.Martinez is helping torture angel but magically becomes "unbrainwashed" as soon as Max and co rescue Angel, and has somehow managed to organize a practical utopia for them to live in as the world ends
5) Max has boy drama. Which isn't actually "solved". Basically she makes out with both of them and tells them how much she needs them while they drool over her like love sick puppies that then glare at each other when she is gone. Oh and if you havent already realize, Fang came crawling back after Ari killed his precious Maya (they exchanged words of love as she died in his arms and he then goes after another girl. pathetic.)

Then when it seems that the world is completely over and nothing can be done, the world is even more over because a huge meteor goes and destroys their utopia. Yeah. And then whole dramatic death scene, about how she doesn't regret it and it's all fine (ugh) and then wakes up alive. ANd then practically mid idea the series ends, only saying that Angel, Max, FANG AND DYLAN are survivors of the whole thing.

Dear James Patterson,
I loved your book series Maximum Ride and I would like you to know that I do not acknowledge this alleged finale book's existence. Write a proper ending and satisfy the people. For the vast majority, this book is substandard. We will not hold this against you if you write a proper book ( I don't even care if it's a whole drama about who Max picks, as long as you sway me to your point of view for the guy for her). Your efforts are appreciated, and I feel like a jerk writing this since I have never even finished writing one book and this is one book out of so many, and the only I am truly disappointed in. But if you do have the spare time, write a new ending. This one just didn't seem to have it's own plot or shine. Not because it wasn't a happy ending though, I'm okay with unhappy endings, but they require the highest standard of writing. Not many people can pull off the unhappy ending, so I sympathise. I may revise this once I cool off, and read it again (only for the purpose of reevaluating), but for now these are my feelings.

What happened!?!

Okay. Now, I just want to say that I have waited for this book, and I am a teenager, for nearly a year now.
I went to the bookstore today and asked for the book, waiting for three hours until they received a shipment, and then fangirled out when I bought it. Like I was half-crying and fanning my face.
On my walk home I started reading it and as soon as I hit the first chapter I knew something was up.

Now, in past books, I know that Angel can communicate with others from far away with her mind.
Did she suddenly stop now? Did she never even consider her probably greatest power?
And then it never occurred to Max that Angel might be back at the School, where they'd been captured countless times.
Come on.

And then, Fang's Gang? What?!
More like Fang, some traitors, and two guys who'll leave the plot and you'll just assume turn out fine.
Y'know, cause that's how James Patterson rolls.
Kate and Star were traitors, and what the heck happened to Ratchet and Starfish? Does it automatically make it 100% okay if they're cast out of the plot like idiots?
NO.
That was a massive gaping plot hole right there.

Next, when Ari came back, I literally said, out loud, "OH DEAR JESUS NOT AGAIN."
He died in the first book.
Then James Patterson was like, "Psyche! Haha, he's not dead yet!"
He came back to life again in the third book.
Died again. WAS BURIED.
Now is another clone.
Killed Maya. WHAT THE-
Maya, I thought, was actually a nice little tertiary character! I thought she was actually going to end up with Dylan! And then I'd be happy!
But nooo.
And then, when he dies again, it was like you couldn't trust him to not come back.

And speaking of coming back, when Fang did, back to the flock, instead of questioning him responsibly like she should, Max will throw A PARTY.
A party. So your long lost love comes back presumably from the dead, and then you make a cake and assume that it's a band-aid.
Oh, abandoned me and your practical family? Here, have some cake. It'll make it all better.
Please.
Then, the Erasers and Ari come back and it's all a crapfest and a massive fight, Fang nearly dies, and then Ari dies and so do the rest of the Erasers.
Boom. There's another plot hole missing right there.

And then we find out that Fang's DNA holds the key to immortality? How would almost fifteen years of being experimented on in the School not reveal that? It's like going to the doctor's in the next, uhm, I don't know, month, and they say this:
"Oh, you just have the key to Immortality, yeah it's normal."

And since this is ridiculously long, I'll just say my feelings on the ending.
Now, Max talks to Fang and then Dylan goes insane and smashes cars because he looooooves her, yeah, no.
IT WAS FAX IT WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE FAX IT NEVER WAS ANYTHING BUT FAX. Get that through your head, James.
So then when Max and Fang got back together I was saying: "Awh, yay."
Because if she would have ended up with Dylan I would have thrown the book across the room.

So then, when I thought they were gonna go save the States from the 99% group,
THE SKY EXPLODES!?! WHAT!?!
Who the heck told James Patterson that that was an acceptable ending? Riddle me that.
AND THE WORST THING WAS THAT IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE MAIN AGRESSOR OF THE BOOK, THE 99% GROUP!
Then there's the tsunami, and then there was the chapter when Max said that she died with Fang, and she was happy that it ended that way.
I was torn between crying, screaming, sobbing, and punches various items near me like a lamp while reading that chapter.
Then Dylan comes in and saves everyone, and I was like,
"TELL US THE TRUTH. DID YOU DIE OR NOT?"

Then it said that she developed gills, and I was happy at least if she didn't die.

And then it ends with her saying that it's, quote, "The Time Of Maximum Ride."?!?!
Oh no, I'm sorry, the last seven books weren't?! Are you KIDDING?!
The last 7 books were the time of Maximum Ride! Who are you kidding! No one!
The world has ended, and now you're saying that it's your time?!
Ugh, I JUST CAN'T EVEN.

I honestly wish that I could give this book less than a star, because I've spent the last five hours watching my entire childhood, tweenhood, and teenhood go up in fire.

I know you'll buy it and read it, but then you'll end up writing a review like me. Believe it.

Sorry I had to write that, but it's true.

This is the ending?

I absolutely loved this series! ...Well, the first three books at least. The first three books in the series deals with Max being a strong and independent leader, kicking butt and not taking crap from ANYONE. However, these past couple of books have been totally random, adding little plot holes here and there. Like Doctor Chu? The One Light cult? Global Warming( which, honestly, I thought that was totally irrelevant to the plot of the books anyway.)? Yeah, none of that is mentioned. Although Mark, the leader of the one light group, makes a guest appearance for 2 or so pages...until he dies. Again. Like, seriously? This group pops up out of NO WHERE, brainwashes who knows how many kids, blows up the city of Paris, and is barely mentioned? And I thought the whole plot of the past seven books was to save the world? Apparently Max did too, until the "End of the World" comes and she does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

MAX: World's gonna end? Awesome. Lemme know when i'm needed. In the meantime, i'm going to make out with two hot guys and rip myself apart trying to figure who i'd rather be with. TTYL.

It was ridiculous. And Fang's Gang? There's a betrayal by Star and Kate, someone dies, and Fang leaves the rest just hanging in the middle of the desert, never to be heard from again. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF FANG'S GANG? An opportunity to add in a love interest for Fang? Cause you never see the rest again.

The Voice? Predictable. I already knew who it was before I opened the book.

Now onto... The Epidemic. Max is already loaded down with saving the world, trying to stop crazy scientists from experimenting on people, defeating Erasers (or whatever the heck they've mutated into now), world peace, global warming, the One Light, and now, as if this emotionally unstable girl needed any more to deal with, and Epidemic that will wipe out the whole planet. Honestly, if this much is going on, there's no way a 15 year old girl with relationship issues and an inferiority complex is gonna save ANYONE.

So many plot holes have been introduced to the story line with the past couple of books, and this book just keeps adding them! Not going to be able to save the world? Let's just add a life threatening epidemic you can stop! ...What? You can't do that either? Then stop global warming! No? Okay, can you stop the One Light? Who?... Okay, nevermind. We'll just let you sort out your relation ship issues and just let the rest work out.

Seriously. Consistency is a major issue I have with this series. The first three books it was like, "Okay, we can work things out, we've still got an entire series to figure out what going on and how to fix it!"
By the end, it's like, "Dude, making out with your boyfriends is NOT a solution." So many things were wrong with the character development, which consisted of NONE, and by the end the characters were all so OOC that I kinda just wanted Max to fail and them all to die just to be done with it. Honestly, that would have given more closure to this series.

So, no. If you have to read it, i'd just rent it from the library and not even spend money on the book. It was an interesting start to a series, which had potential, but by this book, it was a total cop out pretty similar to the Hunger Games or the LOST tv show. All we needed was consistency and closure, but we couldn't even get that, could we, Patterson?

If your pulse flutters at the thought of castle ruins and descents into crypts by moonlight, you will savor every creepy page of Elizabeth Kostova's long but beautifully structured thriller The Historian. The story opens in Amsterdam in 1972, when a teenage girl discovers a medieval book and a cache of yellowed letters in her diplomat father's library. The pages of the book are empty except for a woodcut of a dragon. The letters are addressed to: "My dear and unfortunate successor." When the girl confronts her father, he reluctantly confesses an unsettling story: his involvement, twenty years earlier, in a search for his graduate school mentor, who disappeared from his office only moments after confiding to Paul his certainty that Dracula--Vlad the Impaler, an inventively cruel ruler of Wallachia in the mid-15th century--was still alive. The story turns out to concern our narrator directly because Paul's collaborator in the search was a fellow student named Helen Rossi (the unacknowledged daughter of his mentor) and our narrator's long-dead mother, about whom she knows almost nothing. And then her father, leaving just a note, disappears also.

As well as numerous settings, both in and out of the East Bloc, Kostova has three basic story lines to keep straight--one from 1930, when Professor Bartolomew Rossi begins his dangerous research into Dracula, one from 1950, when Professor Rossi's student Paul takes up the scent, and the main narrative from 1972. The criss-crossing story lines mirror the political advances, retreats, triumphs, and losses that shaped Dracula's beleaguered homeland--sometimes with the Byzantines on top, sometimes the Ottomans, sometimes the rag-tag local tribes, or the Orthodox church, and sometimes a fresh conqueror like the Soviet Union.

Although the book is appropriately suspenseful and a delight to read--even the minor characters are distinctive and vividly seen--its most powerful moments are those that describe real horrors. Our narrator recalls that after reading descriptions of Vlad burning young boys or impaling "a large family," she tried to forget the words: "For all his attention to my historical education, my father had neglected to tell me this: history's terrible moments were real. I understand now, decades later, that he could never have told me. Only history itself can convince you of such a truth." The reader, although given a satisfying ending, gets a strong enough dose of European history to temper the usual comforts of the closing words. --Regina Marler

Narrated by an ensemble of talented actors, this audio book is enhanced by impressive musical scoring during key transitions (from past to present, or between narrators) and at pivotal junctures in the story. The music adds to the eeriness of the novel's progression, while the brisk abridgement keeps the pace moving much more compellingly than the print version: where the novel reproduced a 15 page academic journal article, this adaptation trims it to its bones by allowing primary sources to speak directly across centuries of history. While teens may gain a feeling for Cold War Europe and some respect for the Internet-less scholars of 40 years ago, Historian is an eerie thriller, an atmospheric mystery, and an appealing romance. Teen fascination with vampires has been keen since Bram Stoker popularized the legend of Dracula, right up through Buffy. This is an exciting novel!

This debut novel from Kostova contains elements from many of my favorite genres - thriller, suspense, mystery, historical fiction, and vampire lore. It is no surprise then that this supremely intelligent story was a very entertaining read. Though I feel that the story concept and character development deserve five stars, I feel that there are a few important flaws in this book which put it into the four star category.

First the good: All of the characters in this tale are very believable, including Vlad Tepes himself. I really enjoyed the historical facts surrounding the Ottoman Empire and Eastern Europe that Kostova weaved into her tale. I also loved the way she used letters to reveal the more thrilling aspects of the story bit by bit. This kept me in that "I'll just read ten more pages" mode on many a late night.

Now for the problems: The first 300 pages of this book were very compelling and hard to put down. Somewhere between page 300 and 450 it began to feel like Kostova had an old graduate school dissertaion on the migration patterns of monks in the 15th century lying around so she decided to work it into the story. Wow did that slow the pace... I don't have a problem with the storyline taking the characters on a search for the history of these monks, its just that Kostova occasionally strayed across the line between entertaining fiction and dry academic research.

All of that said, my opinion as a librarian and avid reader of such stories is that this is an excellent book, well worth reading. I am sure that it will have wide appeal and is no doubt deserved of its huge marketing push. I have heard that there is already talk of a movie...

Flawed but still readable

I've always enjoyed reading books about the occult and stories that weave them into historical events; moreover I've always been interested in the real Dracula - Vlad the Impaler. Therefore I was really anticipating the release of THE HISTORIAN, especially since it seemed to be getting positive reviews from critics. But it is with great regret that I have to say that this book is overhyped and disappointing. I admit that this book is still better than many of the books that are out there, but that's not saying a lot these days; and it's especially unfortunate to see that this is what passes for good nowadays.

The premise is certainly promising - the search for the historical Dracula. The story is told through three main narratives: that of the young girl that opens the novel; her father; and her father's mentor. The structure is an homage to Bram Stroker's DRACULA, which is also told through letters and multiple narratives. Unfortunately, the author may have been overly ambitious in this endeavor, as she failed to pull the whole thing together. The result is, if you're familiar with the genre, that you notice the structure too much, and so you are able to predict what will happen next long before the author writes it. For a mystery novel, that kills the suspense. It's a bit like seeing the boom mike hanging over a scene in a movie. You want to suspend your disbelief and immerse yourself into the novel, but the boom mike keeps getting in the way.

Also, to pull off such a narrative structure, you need good, distinct characters. Unfortunately, none of the characters really stand out for me. They all seem one-dimensional, and similar, making it hard to attach yourself to the cast that doesn't distinguish itself from one another very much, so much so that every foreigner who happens to speak English has to comment on how they haven't had a chance to practice it, or how excited they are to have the chance to speak English. The narrative also gives the author an excuse to be verbose, so you'll find her describing the same thing over and over again, sometimes even using the same words.

The pacing is also problematic. For the first 100 pages or so, it drags along, and doesn't really pick up till about page 120. But even then, it doesn't accelerate much, and loses steam very soon. The climax is anti-climatic, to put it mildly. In fact, it is so anti-climatic that it borders on being comical. I understand that they've auctioned this book for a movie for a 2007 release. Unless there's some major rewriting, this movie will really flop.

I'll try not to nitpick on the plot holes, of which there are numerous, but I will point out the implausibility of running into people who just happen to do exactly what you're interested in. At first I thought there may be some sinister scheme, but the author chalks it up to "coincidence" and leaves it at that. As a doctoral student myself, I know how hard it is to find an article or a person who's doing exactly what you're doing, nevermind that they're talking about something as esoteric as Dracula. People just happen to sit in restaurants and find out that the person next to them is doing the same topic. Right!

Finally, just a comment on the romance. It is not well developed. It's clumsy and adolescent, like a juvenile first attempt at describing sentimentality. It follows the cliche that every man and woman put together for a short period of time must somehow fall in love. There is no feeling in the romance, which cheapens the novel.

If you enjoy historical narratives like THE HISTORIAN, or ones that weave in multiple narratives, I suggest any of the following if you haven't read them already: THE NAME OF THE ROSE and FOUCAULT'S PENDULUM by Umberto Eco, POSSESSION by A. S. Byatt, THE CLUB DUMAS and THE FLANDERS PANEL by Arturo Perez-Reverte. I myself am off to read GOSPEL by Wilton Barnhardt.

A final note: THE HISTORIAN is not bad. Understandably, it is an author's debut novel, and for that, it is still pretty good. I will still look forward to the author's next, but I hope by then she would have had better control of her writing. If you're just here for the ride, pick up the novel. I still read it through and stayed up doing it. But if you're looking for something deep or revelationary or well-structured, this is not it.

Edit: I've just started reading GOSPEL by Wilton Barnhardt and I encourage everyone who enjoys books like THE HISTORIAN but who may or may not have liked it, to give this book a shot. It actually reminds me a lot of THE HISTORIAN, or at least as far as I'm into it. It starts out in Oxford with a doctoral student and a professor. However, the characters, major and minor, all come to life with a few words, and I'm not even 50 pages in. Moreover, the research is impeccable, which makes it even more exciting. I'm not sure if it was a hit when it came out in 1993, but perhaps the length (over 700 pages!) made be forbidding to some. But still, this is the type of book that THE HISTORIAN could have been.

A suspenseful, literary novel

The marketing campaign is underway and Elizabeth Kostova's debut novel is already being hyped as the "Dracula Code" or some similar slogan. I disagree with that approach, not just because they are quite different in more ways than just storyline, but because "The Da Vinci Code" was a good thriller with elements of history mixed in, but it is not even in the same league with this book.

"The Historian" is an epic work of historical fiction that sweeps across Europe during the four decades between 1930 and the mid 1970s. It just also happens to involve the Dracula myth and a good dose of suspense. Now, some people may object to me calling this novel a work of historical fiction because it is mostly fiction and contains very few real characters. That is true, but Kostova does such an amazing job of making the Dracula myths come alive that you can't help feeling that the legends and the story are real. Her research is stunning in its attention to detail and the wide range of topics Kostova must've studied. A previous reviewer slightly criticizes Kostova for spending too many pages describing the pilgrimage routes of monks hundreds of years ago. While sections like that do slow down the pace of the novel somewhat, they don't distract from it. The last book that I read that combines elements of history, suspense, and great characters as well as "The Historian" was "The Devil in the White City".

Highly recommended!

Food-related wordplay adds layers to the free verse, as in the lines about the protesters’ recipe for integration: “Combine black with white / to make sweet justice.” The double-page spreads in watercolor and thick ink lines show both the scene in Woolworth’s and across America as blacks and whites organize sit-ins and watch coverage of protests on TV. Finally, the young people at the counter get what they order, “served to them exactly the way they wanted it––well done.” The recipe metaphors are repetitive, but at the core of the exciting narrative are scenes that show the difficulty of facing hatred: “tougher than any school test.” Closing pages discuss the role of adults, including Ella Baker and then presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and include a detailed civil rights time line, “a final helping” about the historic struggle, and a bibliography. About the Author
Andrea Davis Pinkney is the author of many acclaimed picture books and young adult novels, and she received a Coretta Scott King Book Award Author Honor for Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters. She is a children's book editor at a major publishing company.

Brian Pinkney has illustrated numerous books for children, including two Caldecott Honor books, and he has written and illustrated several of his own books. Brian has received the Coretta Scott King Book Award for Illustration and three Coretta Scott King Book Award Honor medals.

Andrea and Brian are a husband-and-wife team who live with their children in New York City.

This stunning portrait of the "Greensboro Four" takes a look at how young people contributed their strength to end segregation

A doughnut and coffee "with cream on the side" wasn't much to ask for in a place like Woolworth's where the lunch counter was a haven for young and old, eager for a little socialization and a little lunch. Four young black men, David, Joseph, Franklin, and Ezell quietly sat at the counter waiting to be served, but as the times dictated it wouldn't be any time soon. "WHITES ONLY" didn't get any black person a napkin, let alone any food. They sat quietly, ignored by most, and proudly in spite of the refusal of the waitress to serve them. On the counter were the napkin holders, the round sugar containers, and the salt and pepper shakers, but definitely no doughnuts and coffee "with cream on the side." It just wasn't going to happen because "segregation was a bitter mix." Very bitter indeed.

A stern looking police officer strolled to the counter, billy club in hand, but the boys were sitting quietly, politely and had not broken any laws. No one knew what to do, but when the store was closed the young men went home. On February 2, 1960, they went to the Woolworth's counter again. The cakes on display looked wonderful, but the only things they wanted were doughnuts and coffee "with cream on the side." Dr. King didn't live in Greensboro, but they remembered well his message, "We must meet violence with nonviolence." It was a difficult message to hold in the hearts of other young people around the country who joined them in their efforts. The sit-ins elicited cruel acts of behavior . . . "Coffee poured down their backs. Milkshakes flung in their faces. Pepper thrown in their eyes." A doughnut and coffee "with cream on the side" . . . please.

This stunning portrait of the "Greensboro Four" takes a close look at how young people contributed their strength to end segregation. The power of conviction these young men had, in retrospect, was amazing and this book easily conveys that fact. The dream like, nostalgic quality of the artwork meshes perfectly with the story. The Civil Rights Movement is one that young people have trouble relating to, but stories such as these help bring it to life. One of the best parts of the book is the ten step "recipe for integration," one that starts with love. In the back of the book is a Civil Rights Timeline (in paragraph form from 1954 to 1964), a photograph of the "Greensboro Four" in Woolworth's, a more in depth look at the incident and the times, and additional recommended book and website resources.

Early in 1960 in Greensboro, North Carolina, four brave young people sat at the Woolworth's lunch counter and waited for service. Their courage stemmed from standing up for their rights, as African Americans, to be treated equally and to gain access to the same services as whites. Woolworth's, however, like most businesses and institutions, segregated its operations, and its lunch counters would serve only whites.

Inspired by Martin Luther King's principle of meeting hate with love, David, Joseph, Franklin, and Ezell sat patiently and quietly and waited to place their orders. They waited all day, and when they came back the next day, they waited again and were joined by others. The idea caught on like wildfire across the country and within a year, tens of thousands of people -- back and white -- had taken part in sit-ins. As participants continued to meet hostility and violence with non-violent means, the sit-ins ultimately resulted in an enormous step toward social justice with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Young learners gaining their first exposure to the history of the civil rights movement will enjoy this book's lively watercolor illustrations and rhythmical text, rich in historical background and embellished with cooking metaphors. The back-end materials further make the book a useful resource for introducing children to the power of consumer boycotts and sit-ins in prompting businesses to end their discriminatory practices.

Iron Man and War Machine, for Kids...

In conjunction with the release of the 2010 movie "Iron Man 2", Marvel Comics brought out a series of children's picture books. "Iron Man 2: Iron Man Fights Back" is a simplified retelling of that portion of the movie in which an Iron Man suit is "borrowed" by the US Air Force and is turned into a deadly drone by a weapons maker. It includes the sequence in which Tony Stark's buddy Rhodey gets back control of his War Machine suit, and he and Iron Man take on an army of enemy drones. The vocabulary is suitable to beginning readers; the illustrations are exciting but should be non-threatening to young readers.

The cover art shows Iron Man and War Machine as seen in "Iron Man 2." The actual picture book illustrations are in comic art form. "Iron Man 2: Iron Man Fights Back" is recommended to parents with children who might be interested in the movie and learning to read.

The monks of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New York monastery for more than 20 years. Perfect for the amateur who wants a friend & companion

My husband agreed to a Dalmation for my wedding present in spite of all the misgivings he had about the breed. I purchased many books on dog training to ensure that our dog would be a welcome member of the household all its years. In each of them, I felt that there were holes in the philosophy, problem solving that might cause injury to my dog. I wanted a well thought out, cohesive plan that addressed daily training, submission, and problem behaviour within a philosophical framework. This was the book that became our bible. It was sane, safe for both the dog & us, and it showed immediate results. We got our puppy at 8 weeks, by 12 weeks she would sit, lie down and stay on command for up to 15 minutes whether we were in sight or not. The techniques in the book were so effective that we were able to implement them easily, with just a little time set aside every day. When we began puppy classes at 6 mos., we were immediately promoted to the advanced obedience class and worked with dogs that were showing successfully in obedience with two of the top trainers. They owned and showed the #1 and #2 obedience dogs in the country. Our dog is now 7 yrs old, because of how good she is, we can take her everywhere. She is welcome at our friends, neighborhood children come to play with her, there are even restaurants that insist she come in. Our dog owes the fact that her life is full and happy to this book. She has never had to be tied up, left behind or locked in a room. The quality of her life is so much better,because these monks shared their knowledge in this book. People always ask how we trained her, we go to your website, print out the page and give it to them, because we do not want them to think any training book will do. Ideally, people would read this book before choosing a puppy and then be completely prepared for the sustained effort needed in raising and training a dog.

An excellent guide for new buyers, trainers, & breeders!

The breeder we bought our german shepherd puppy from recommended this book to us. I am amazed at the work the Monks of New Skete are doing for the german shepherd breed. My hope is that all breeders would use the New Skete method with their litters. If this were done, then maybe so-called "dangerous breeds" would lose their bad rap. Surely there would be less dogs in animal shelters and pet shops.

I can not stress enough the importance of early human socialization, and the Monks of New Skete seem to agree. If you are planning on breeding a litter, I urge you to pick up this book an heed the authors advice.

This book also stresses humane training methods, and the importance of positive reinforcement. Using this method has helped with my dominant GSD pup. Constant scolding will get you nowhere. A quick pop on the lead when bad and copious amounts of praise when good makes training a happy occasion for both dog and master.

I would recommend the three tape training set "Raising Your Dog With The Monks of New Skete" along with this book. The tapes show the New Skete method from the puppy birth, to training the adult dog, and brings the information together nicely.

A word of caution

When someone walks in to the dog training center I work at and says I'm reading this great book by the Monks of New Skete, I pause and then find some tactful way to say, remember, if something seems like it might not be right for you and your dog, it isn't right for you and your dog. Then an instructor who also is very involved in "black-spotted dog" rescue will walk by and say "Whatever you do, promise me you'll never do an alpha roll. You wouldn't believe how many dogs I see because of the alpha roll."
The alpha roll is a technique espoused by the Monks, although I hear the main author of these books no longer recommonds the roll. It is to teach the dog that you are dominant. Basically you roll the dog over and hold it on its back until it quits struggling. Problem is instead of learning that you are dominant, many dogs learn that you are scary. And a fearful dog can grow up to become an aggressive dog. If you want to read a harrowing tale about what the alpha roll can do to a dog, pick up Patricia McConnell's The Other End of the Leash.
Some of this book is helpful. I particularly like the interview with Maurice Sendak (whose dogs have clearly unlearned some of the Monks' training.) The food/potty training schedule is very helpful. That's what people rave about when they come into the center. Up to about chapter 11, I don't see anything majorly wrong with the book. The chapters on early development and socialization provide a lot of useful information. If the "Who should have a dog" chapter persuades one person that they aren't ready to provide the environment needed for the type of dog they are thinking about, I have to applaud it.
But, their main methods of training don't feel right to me. Enough said already about the alpha roll. No food? I understand their point that you want the dog to work for you, not a bribe. But I have seen several dogs I.Q go up significantly when the reward is changed from kibble to cheese. Treats go an awful long way towards getting your dog to focus on you, and getting your dog to figure out what you want it to do. We teach sit by putting a piece of food by the dog's nose and moving it up. They catch on pretty quick! Once they've figured it out, then we start backing off on the "bribes."
And no food, just corrections and verbal praise, might work on German Shepherds but forget it on Basset Hounds. And I wouldn't expect it to work well with labs, chessies, basenjis, many spaniels etc etc. As for corrections, doing things such as holding a dogs forefeet up when they jump on you until they squirm is unnecessary. And that makes me cringe when I think about the still-growing hips of a young dog. Most dogs eventually get it if they get no attention when they jump but lots of attention when all four feet are on the ground. It takes patience to train this way, but withdrawing attention works wonders if a dog has learned that your attention is good (that is, attention doesn't mean an alpha roll).
I could go on, but oh well. I'll say it again, if something doesn't feel right for you and your dog, it isn't right. You have to be the judge. And as for "The Art of Raising a Puppy" take the good out of it and erase the bad from your brain cells. If you are in need of a basic Puppy Primer, everyone I asked when I was getting my first puppy said to get "How to Raise a Puppy you can Live With" and I agree. "How to Raise a Puppy You can Live With" is one of the best places you could start.
