The Great LIFE Photographers, by The Editors of LIFE

The Great LIFE Photographers is the most comprehensive anthology of LIFE photography ever published, featuring the best work of every staff photographer who worked for the famous magazine, and that of a handful of others who shot for LIFE. It was always the photographers who made LIFE great, and this is the most vivid and exciting portrait of those men and women that has ever been produced.

The book offers more than 100 portfolios including those of Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White, Carl Mydans, Gordon Parks, W. Eugene Smith, Robert Capa, Ralph Morse, Nina Leen, Harry Benson, Philippe Halsman, and Joe McNally, whose work for LIFE in the aftermath of September 11 was in the finest tradition of the magazine. Each portfolio includes a short biography, offering an intimate look at the people behind the lens.

Here are the defining moments of the 20th century, including MacArthur wading ashore by Mydans, Capa's D-Day landing at Omaha Beach and, of course, Eisenstaedt's sailor kissing the nurse. Here are the first pictures taken from inside the womb and the first taken from outer space. Here are powerful scenes from Tiananmen Square and from the American South during the Civil Rights movement. LIFE helped make icons of Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe, the Beatles and Michael Jackson, and those indelible photographs are here too.

This attractive new paperback edition is an affordable way to own some of the most memorable photographs ever made, stunningly reproduced in black and white and full color.

A Good Morning America Best Coffee Table Book of the Season, Charles Gibson Selection, 2004

I cannot recommend the LIFE collection highly enough. It intrigues and stimulates more than the sea of data that sweeps through our lives each day.―The Guardian

Images such as one of the Beatles cavorting in a swimming pool are instantly recognizable, but less well-known photos, such as a 1952 shot of a roller-skating horse, are equally charming.―BusinessWeek

The Great LIFE Photographers... depicts the evolution of photography from the early 1940s until the end of the 20th century. [It] is 600 pages from start to finish and will captivate and inspire any type of photographer.―TakeGreatPictures.com

The Great LIFE Photographers features pictures by more than 200 of the century's best photojournalists on staff at the magazine throughout its history. But lesser-known works still retain enormous storytelling power decades later, attesting to the skill and artistry of photographers who placed themselves mere feet from the action to frame the shot.―BookPage

A great gift.―The Art Quarterly

Captured: compassion and compositions.
By Robin
On page 558 of this stunning photo book there is a studio shot taken in 1960 by Bill Sumits of thirty-eight Life photographers, surely the only time in history that so many great photographers have been together in one place and it is amazing to think that the ninety-nine featured in the book were all on the staff of this one publication.

The book is arranged alphabetically and each photographer gets between five and eight images plus their photo and short hundred or so word biography. Now it's possible to see who took so many images that defined a moment and became classic examples of photojournalism and also to see other examples of their great work. John Loengard's introduction does not say so but I assume all the photos did appear in Life and they cover the years from 1936 (when the title started) to 1997. The book is well designed with mostly one photo per page (well printed in 175 dpi) and a caption and nicely some photos get longer captions where a photographer reveals some background detail about their images.

There are a lot of news type photos here, especially from the Second World War years but equally as many taken from the photo-essay style work that Life became famous for. Others show celebrities and ordinary folk going about their lives. These photos are so good that you have to stop and really take notice of what they are telling you. I think this wonderful book is a strong visual reminder of how great Life was.

A fascinating book that came out some years ago: Great Photographic Essays from Life and still available (quite cheaply, too) has twenty-two photo essays reproduced slightly smaller than they originally appeared in the weekly. I found it fascinating to see how great photos, which I've seen many times in other books over the years, were presented on the page.

A superb retrospective of the golden age of photo journalism
By Jerry Saperstein
It's not fashionable these days to speak of Henry Luce as great because his political views weren't left-wing. But the truth is Luce was a brilliant man who built a publishing empire based on delivering information in a concise way. His empire began with Time, then Fortune and next Life, a magazine that told its stories through pictures. (Sports Illustrated and the abominable People followed, the latter after Luce's death.)

Life editors perfected the photo essay. To do this, they hired some of the finest photographers in the world. This work showcases the work of 99 of those photographers in 698 color and black-and-white photos.

It is a glorious work. Life photographers were perfectionists. The technicians at the Life labs who printed their work were perfectionists. The editors who selected, cropped and laid out the work of the photographers and lab techs were perfectionists.

The result was for nearly sixty years a collection of some of the finest photography created in the 20th Century. It is sad that public tastes changed, that television overwhelmed the desire to leaf through the pages of magazines like Life.

The news in those days was largely captured in the still photograph. And here many of them are. The young Shah of Iran talking with Wendell Wilkie, the 1940 Republican Presidential candidate on a flight somewhere. An iconic photo of fashion-plate Jacqueline Kennedy and nattily-clad toddler son John, Jr. walking along the ocean in Palm Beach. American soldiers passing by a fallen comrade on a brige across the Roer River. The dazzingly beautiful 16 year old Elizabeth Taylor and incredibly intense 24 year old Marlon Brando two years before his first film role. The crowded Saturday night main street in small town Franklin, Indiana in 1940. All these and more were grist for the weekly Life Magazine, the equivalent then of a dozen or more cable television stations today.

It isn't mentioned in this book how many photos exist in the Life archives. Probably a million and maybe far more. But these 698 are a fair representation of the skill, talent and greatness of the 99 Life photographers seen here. (Not included are the many free-lancers whose work also appeared in Life.)

For anyone who appreciates photography as an art, this is a must-have.

Jerry

589 Extraordinary Wide-Ranging Photos With a Sturdier Cardboard Cover!
By Happy Reader
What an amazing book! Ninety-nine photographers and 589 of their masterpieces, both black & white and color. The photographers are listed alphabetically. Each photographer's page starts with a photo of the photographer him/her self and a paragraph of biography. These have great tidbits of information. For example, Jack Birns moved to SE Asia in 1947 and became a specialist in that part of the world. Especially China, "where he captured Shanghai's poverty and social chaos, which derived from the long battle between the ruling Nationalist Party and the insurgent communists. Interestingly, Birns' Chinese images often clashed with the ardent anticommunist views of publisher Henry Luce. As a consequence, many of his pictures didn't receive a wide audience."

Each photographer gets a spread of from 2 - 10 pages. The number of photos shown for each photographer ranges from 2 - 13. The photos are in all sizes, and there are many two-page spreads.

Though I love reading the written word, it is so true that a picture can replace a thousand words. John Dominis' photo of a leopard faced down by a howling baboon is electrifying. Samuel Goldwyn taking his daily walk, with his chauffeur driving his Rolls Royce alongside, is hilarious. Marilyn Monroe in her "ballerina" dress, that photo will outlive you and me together.

And then there's the horrors. You can read a description of a concentration camp survivor, but it's nothing as riveting as a photo. So many famous photos came out of Vietnam, you'd think we'd never go to war again.

Many of the photos in this book are famous, and justly so. Everything from world news to intimate glimpses to celebrities. I'm not always a fan of celebrity photos, but sometimes they tell a story, too.

Though this is a paperback, it is not a flimsy paperback. Good thing, since it's 608 pages. The covers are thick cardboard-like with a glossy finish on the outside. This makes it sturdier than a regular paperback.

Highly recommended book. I have one for myself and love giving it as a gift.

Review
"I love the way Heather and Jessica write. They're so funny, and so fashion-y, which is incredibly rare."―Mindy Kaling, Emmy-nominated writer, actress, and New York Times bestselling author of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)

"Spoiled is soapy, funny and full of the Fug Girls' trademark Hollywood snark. I want to read the sequel NOW."―Megan McCafferty, New York Times bestselling author of Bumped and the Jessica Darling series

"The companion novel to Spoiled is a treat. On one level, there are enough witty observations and laugh-out-loud lines to make this about as much fun as you can have reading a book. But, at its heart, this is an engaging, well-plotted story about two girls who are not as different as they seem..."―VOYA

"Satirizing Hollywood is a time-honored literary pastime, but timely satirical touches keep things fresh...For most of the lowlife celebrities skewered, fame will be justly fleeting, but this novel should have a longer shelf life, thanks to a cast of complex characters who offer ample evidence that, F. Scott Fitzgerald notwithstanding, the rich and famous are like you and me."―Kirkus

"This engaging, entertaining follow-up companion to Spoiled (2011) features plenty of snark, style, and Hollywood-centric satire, but also sympathy for the girls as they navigate familiar issues like wanting parental approval and pursuing their dreams."―Booklist

"This story of hidden identities and love triangles is a fun and fast read... All of the characters have well-developed personalities, and teens will want to be along for any future adventures."―SLJ

Great book for the summertime!
By Amanda Welling
First Impressions: The authors first book, Spoiled, will never make it to the top of my all-time favorite books, but I read it late last summer and it was a fun summer-time read. That's basically what I was looking for when I picked up my copy of Messy. It is summer and I'm out of school until August and I wanted to read a book that didn't require me to think too much.

First 50 Pages: I thought that Messy was a sequel to Spoiled, but not so much. I would classify it as a companion novel and I don't really think that you need to read Spoiled in order to enjoy this book. I would also say that Messy and Spoiled are more fun to read than anything else. They aren't terribly long and either would make for a nice afternoon at the beach. When I finished Messy I definitely think I liked it more than Spoiled, probably because it had a new narrator. I was never crazy about one of the old narrators, Molly, and she doesn't have such a huge role in this book.

Characters & Plot: Like I stated before, this book is just plain fun to read. The plot is very light and easy-going and it doesn't require much thought. This time around, Messy is narrated by Brooke and Max, who is Molly's best friend. Brooke is slightly obnoxious and she craves attention. Max is much more likable, but both have big dreams of making it into the spotlight. That is basically what this book is about; the race for fame and fortune.

The funny thing is, is that neither girl really likes one another, yet they end up working together in this book for the pursuit of their dreams. Max however, is the true main character. She is snarky and hilarious at times and is willing to do just about anything to get the money to move to New York City, even if it means she has to put up with Brooke. Brooke has a blog and she needs a writer and of course, Max takes up the job, which comes with a few fun surprises. I definitely loved Max and she kind of reminded me of myself when I was around her age, even her obsession with moving to NYC (which I actually did!)

Final Thoughts: Again, this was a fun book. It had some great character dialog and it moved at a good pace. It's nothing fancy or life-changing but it kept me entertained for a few hours. I would definitely recommend it to teens who are looking for a good summertime book to read!

Trilogy, please?
By Stephanie Lucianovic
Second books can often suffer from sequel-itis, causing them to not live up to the first. This is not the case with MESSY. I'm not saying it's better than SPOILED, which I also loved, but having Max as an aspiring writer dealing all the creative fits and starts and frustrations and excitement really hit home for me in how completely accurate it is.

As much as I liked that SPOILED stayed within and fully explored the confines of the elite Los Angeles high school where celebrity spawn seek to spawn celebrity, I was fascinated that MESSY too us onto sets and into auditions. MESSY is utterly delightful as summer, fall, winter, or spring read.

Dare we hope for a third installment, Fug Girls?

Great Companion to Spoiled, And Then Some!
By eh
I really enjoyed 'Spoiled' but I REALLY enjoyed 'Messy'. It's a super clever follow up, and refreshing to see more character development and snarky Hollywood inside life that every teen dreams of being part of. I hope there's a TV series, or 3rd book - or more from the authors. I read it in two sittings over one weekend because I wanted to know what happens next -- and that's a RARE find. 5 stars!

Here is outstanding new work by such well-known writers as Andrew Holleran, Dale Peck, Michael Nava, and David Wojnarowicz alongside fresh talents who capture the full spectrum of gay life today -- African Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans. The impressive writing presented here -- all drawn from works published in 1996 -- reflects this diversity as well, and ranges from coming-of-age narratives to reflections on growing older, from edgy 'zine fiction to elegant tales wrought with lapidary precision.

Unified only by their excellence, these twenty-one selections are resounding proof of yet another banner year for gay fiction.

Amazon.com Review
Since the Stonewall riots and the emergence of a vibrant, public homosexual culture, gay male fiction has been gradually coming out of the shadows and Brian Bouldrey's series Best American Gay Fiction is a fine barometer of its current state. These 21 pieces--ranging from excerpts of recently published novels to original short stories to fictionalized memoir--reflect the emotional and literary diversity of gay writing today. Bouldrey has chosen work by the already famous such as Andrew Holleran and Dale Peck, cult writers such as Kevin Killian, and up-and-coming authors such as Kolin M. Ohi and Tom House.

From Kirkus Reviews
Editor Bouldrey (The Genius of Desire, 1993) notes that his goals in this second installment of an annual collection were to ``highlight new talent. . . showcase established writers'' and to ``bring attention to published work that might have had limited distribution.'' He accomplishes all three, producing an anthology strong on less well-known writers (including Russell Leong, Mitchell Cullin, and Karl Woelz) and venues but also featuring some effective work by such well-established figures as Andrew Holleran, Stephen Beachy, Michael Nava, and Dale Peck. Several of the most moving tales (like John R. Keene's ``My Son, My Heart, My Life'' and Scott Thomas's ``The Main Frame'') deal in fresh, powerful ways with the struggles of young men to come to grips with the nature and implications of their desires. A savvy, lively overview of current gay fiction. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Amazon.com Review
From its opening pages, Anita Shreve's Sea Glass surrounds the reader in the surprisingly rich feeling of the New Hampshire coast in winter. Vividly evoking the life of the coastal community at the beginning of the Great Depression, Sea Glass shifts through the multiple points of view of six principal characters; it's a skillfully created story of braided lives that bounces easily (even inevitably) from character to character. We learn how these lives come together following the stock market crash of 1929 and about the struggles of mill workers on the starkly beautiful New Hampshire coast during the following year. At the novel's center is the story of Honora Beecher, a young newlywed who compulsively collects sea glass along the beach as she collects unexpected friendship in her new beachside community, and Francis, a boy who discovers a father figure in the towering character of McDermott, an Irish mill worker, at a time when he most needs direction. Each character finds unexpected new purpose beyond the struggle to survive during that turbulent year among the dunes. First their lives barely touch, then they intersect, and finally they become inextricably bound. By the powerful and unexpected final scenes of the story, every point of view, every brilliant shard of life depends deeply on all the others. It is a very satisfying read--confidently told and deeply felt--with as many subtle colors and reflections as the sea glass that permeates the narrative. --Paul Ford

From Publishers Weekly
In addition to spinning one of her most absorbing narratives, Shreve here rewards readers with the third volume in a trilogy set in the large house on the New Hampshire coast that figured in The Pilot's Wife and Fortune's Rocks. This time the inhabitants are a newly married couple, Sexton and Honora Beecher, both of humble origins, who rent the now derelict house. In a burst of overconfidence, slick typewriter salesman Sexton lies about his finances and arranges a loan to buy the property. When the 1929 stock market crash occurs soon afterward, Sexton loses his job and finds menial work in the nearby mills. There, he joins a group of desperate mill hands who have endured draconian working conditions for years, and now, facing extortionate production quotas and reduced pay, want to form a union. The lives of the Beechers become entwined with the strikers, particularly a principled 20-year-old loom fixer named McDermott and Francis, the 11-year-old fatherless boy he takes under his wing. A fifth major character is spoiled, dissolute socialite Vivian Burton, who is transformed by her friendship with Honora. As Honora becomes aware that Sexton is untrustworthy, she is drawn to McDermott, who tries to hide his love for her. The plot moves forward via kaleidoscopic vignettes from each character's point of view, building emotional tension until the violent, rather melodramatic climax when the mill owners' minions confront the strikers. Shreve is skilled at interpolating historical background, and her descriptions of the different social strata the millworkers, the lower-middle-class Sextons, the idle rich enhance a touching story about loyalty and betrayal, responsibility and dishonor. This is one of Shreve's best, likely to win her a wider audience. 6-city author tour. (Apr. 9) Forecast: Expectations of brisk sales, indicated by the one-day laydown, will likely be achieved. Readers should find timely resonance in the setting of 1920s economic turbulence.

Very Good
By A Customer
Anita Shreve's latest book, "Sea Glass," is a quiet novel that deals with the universal themes of life, love, loss, hope, beauty, tragedy and death.
"Sea Glass" begins in 1929, when Sexton Beecher, a typewriter salesman, marries bank clerk, Honora. They decide to make their home in a rather dalipidated, but still romantic, New England beach house. Honora is a fulltime wife and homemaker and besides the usual things all wives and homemakers do, Honora loves to take long walks on the beach and collect bits of colored glass worn smooth as silk by the waves of the sea. Eventually, Honora meets and becomes friends with Vivian, a wealthy woman who happens to live nearby. The world seems, at least to Honora, to be an almost perfect place.
When things are too good, they usually don't last and Honora learns this lesson the hard way. The Great Depression causes problems for Sexton and Honora, but it brings Honora unexpected pleasures as well, in the form of handsome Quillen McDermott and his twelve year old friend, Francis.
This is a book that is told from the point of view of many of the characters involved. In almost every case this works, and it works well. The exceptions are Vivian and Francis. In the early sections of the book, Vivian plays such a prominent part that we come to believe she will be an integral part of the coming storyline as well. Instead, she seems to fade a little more with each passing scene.
Francis is also problematic. His chapters are written in long sentences that let us know he is smart, but lacks the education he should have at his age. This wouldn't be bad in and of itself. The problem arises because the rest of the novel is so quiet and so poetic; Francis' chapters seem a little abrupt, as if they're jarring us out of a lovely reverie that we just don't want to leave.
Shreve is good, at least in this book, at creating convincing, believable characters and then making them come to life. The tension and excitement that exists between Honora and McDermott is especially memorable.
Although the description is good, the symbolism of the sea glass, however, is a bit heavy-handed, especially near the end.
This is a quiet book, with no great surprises and no great suspense. It doesn't delve too deeply into the minds and hearts of the characters involved, but then, we don't always want something that's earthshaking. I think most women will find more than enough to relate to in this book and Anita Shreve fans will probably love it.

Fragile lives during the Depression
By Nancy R. Katz
Fortune's Rock, the setting of two of Anita Shreve's earlier books once again plays a significant role in her newest title, Sea Glass. It is to a house in the area of Fortune's Rock located in England, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and a secluded beach, that newly married Honora and Sexton move to in June of 1929. Honora looks forward to keeping house while Sexton will continue his job as traveling typewriter salesman. The house they occupy is rather run down but in lieu of rent, Sexton has agreed to fix it up for the owners. But when the house becomes available for them to buy and while they don't have all of the money, Sexton jumps at the opportunity to purchase it for their futures. Unfortunately, for this couple and other characters in the book, the stock market crash is only weeks away and will ultimately test them economically but also emotionally. In an eerily foreboding manner reminiscent of Shreve's earliest works, the author depicts the lives of characters caught up in events that will shatter their world as the book takes hold and readers race towards the climactic ending.
Told in alternating voices are a cast of wonderful character whom Shreve portrays so well that we feel as though we know them. In addition to Sexton and Honora who spends time collecting sea glass on the beach, there is also the very wealthy Vivian who meets Honora on the beach and her one time lover and once wealthy Dickie. Rounding out the characters are McDermott, a factory worker and labor organizer and his protégé 11 year old Alphonse who dreams of becoming a pilot. These are vivid characters we come to care about whose stories once set in motion, keep the reader wondering how their lives will play our and what will become of them at the end of the book.
And all the while, we are witnesses to these character's lives as they struggle with loyalty, trust, betrayal and solid marriages during a time when our country was gripped with both economic and moral dilemmas. And as we come to know more about them we fear for their lives as the climate of the country grows darker and darker.
While Honora continues to collect her beautiful sea glass, the reader marvels at how Shreve parallels her characters lives with the sea glass. How glass remains intact despite the pounding of the ocean waves and its journey to shore. But people are more fragile as Shreve reminds us in this book and we mourn for these people as the pages turn almost by themselves. While some might say that this title is a historical novel and few do research as well as Anita Shreve, it is also the portrayal of vastly different people who come together under difficult circumstances as they try to survive their own waves and pounding. Few authors can evoke a period of time and place the way Shreve can and does. Once again Ms. Shreve has written a worthwhile read and engaging title.

It Didn't Shine for Me
By Diane
I've read all of Anita Shreve's books. This one wasn't as good as A Pilot's Wife or The Weight of Water.
Her latest book tells the story of the stock market crash in 1929. We see the struggle of the mill workers and the impact of such a horrendous economic blow to all of the various social classes. Honora Beecher is at the centre of the story though the novel is told from 5 different perspectives.
Shreve is an outstanding writer in that she uses wonderful, descriptive language and she can explore the human condition and the range of emotions like few other authors. I enjoyed this part of the book, but the story was a little too slow. I felt that some of the characters just didn't come to life like they could have...Vivian, the jaded socialite especially.
Overall, this was a good book, just not her best.

From Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2-Brown wrote this "For all the kids who insisted on an underwear book." Arthur aficionados will chortle at each picture of boxers and briefs. They'll also empathize with the young aardvark's recurring dreams about public humiliation that inevitably become reality the day his pants rip in the cafeteria. The cook helps him through the ordeal and his nightmares finally disappear. However, Buster, who revealed his best friend's secret fears to their classmates, succumbs to similar dreams at the end. Brown's illustrations remain faithful to the series. There's nothing groundbreaking here, but it's still enjoyable in its familiarity.

From Booklist
Dedicated to "all the kids who insisted on an underwear book," this latest installment in the popular Arthur series is adapted from a PBS teleplay. When Binky bends over to pick up a piece of chalk, "a loud RRRIPPP!" reveals red polka-dot underwear. Arthur finds the situation hilariously funny, until he starts dreaming about being caught in his own white briefs. Arthur's friend Buster dispenses advice, but things come to a head when Buster informs other kids about Arthur's apprehension. Embarrassed that his secret is out, Arthur rushes to escape the cafeteria, ripping his jeans and realizing his worst fear. Ironically, the incident ends up curing him. Fans will appreciate the humor in this bright title with its familiar cartoonlike illustrations, but a few kids might relate to the story with embarrassed giggles of their own. Amy Brandt

My little boy could not contain his laughter
By Julie Jordan Scott
His chuckles gurgled up from his belly and spilled out across the entire room. "His underwear! He is in his underwear! Oh, no!!"

Usually Sam doesn't like books with so much complex art and so much on a page, but this title definitely made him sit up and take notice. The visuals were engaging and not overwhelming... and they were flat out funny.

We got a lot of great stuff to talk about - being scared, embarassed, bad dreams - and the whole time we were enjoying ourselves.

This fact alone makes me rave about the title. Its tough to talk about being afraid and being embarassed... and I have the same dreams over and over and over from early years... what a great way to introduce such topics early on and keep communication open between parents and children!

All because Marc Brown's readers wanted... underwear.

My son and I will take it!

Young children go crazy at just the mention of the word underwear and so to have a whole book devoted to it is a pure treat especially when it involves a favorite character.

"Those who haven't read any of the novels in the Women's Murder Club series are cheating themselves."―BookReporter.com

"Patterson and Paetro are at their best here, weaving a number of plots together to create a novel that dips and flows across genre lines.... A series that shows no signs of fatigue or flagging."―BookReporter.com

Patterson fans will enjoy, but will need something extra for the next one!
By BCB & More
First off I need to say that if you haven't read previous books in this series and you intend to read them in order please don't continue reading the review as some of the storyline will inevitably contain spoilers.

In my ongoing love/hate relationship with James Patterson; I once again pre-ordered this book (even after convincing myself I shouldn't) and set about catching up with the ladies from the Women's Murder Club. I have read each book in this series and probably like many others feel like you have a history with these women. Lindsay Boxer, a detective, Claire who is a medical examiner, Cindy the reporter and Yuki a District Attorney have been friends for a long time and their tight knit circle will never change. In the 9th book in the series I thought I would give up as some of the characters seemed to have lost their edge; however the tenth book gained some ground as the ladies seemed back to their present form. This current book also showed the ladies back to form and it was a pleasure to see them in their usual roles.

The major difference now is that Lindsay Boxer is pregnant but she certainly doesn't allow this to stop her working at her usual pace. When she and her partner Rich Conklin get called to the first murder scene they find millionaire Chaz Smith gunned down in a school. As usual, this case turns out to be one that has many elements, especially as the murder weapon was stolen from the department's evidence locker.

Shortly after both Lindsay and Rich are called to another murder scene where two heads are discovered. Being pregnant and trying to run two murder cases see Lindsay at her most vulnerable, and for a change it really suited her. The story is the typical Patterson style with short and sharp chapters keeping your interest as the story picks up pace as the two investigations take on their own leads.

This book features Lindsay as the main lady and we see a little more of her personal life creeping into her work life as she tries to manage pending motherhood, along with maintaining her marriage to ex-FBI agent Joe. We also see a lot of Cindy as she does her usual trick of trying to get the lead on a story, whilst also battling her own issues surrounding her relationship with Lindsay's partner Rich. We see less of Yuki and Claire although they still feature in the story as the ladies try to close both cases. We see Warren Jacobi, Lindsay's boss feature in the story which for me was a welcome return.

The book was written well as usual and the story itself held my interest but after finishing it, I felt like there was no real progress with the ladies. I think maybe I was expecting something major to happen with one of them to keep this series from going stale. Having said that; I still think that Patterson will keep his fans happy with this latest release.

I enjoyed the book and would certainly say it's a good one for the series. I am actually really looking forward to the next one, as I think with Lindsay having a baby and Yuki dating Lindsay's boss things may heat up for the next book. It would also be nice to see the return of Jacobi more frequently as I always thought he spiced things up. Like I say, a winning formula but would like to see something to shock in the next one.

A good Patterson story
By Calixthe
I consider good stories to be those that are insightful, engaging and entertaining while rife with lessons. 11th Hour fulfills that. It turned out to be a well-deserved wait. The characters are very real too in a way that most people can relate to them. The pointed narratives and dialogues served their purposes. I enjoyed 11th Hour and Triple Agent Double Cross and will read them again. I like good stories that leave me feeling like I missed something in the story.

Who really wrote this book?
By Stephen Fanning
This book is written differently than the other Women's Murder Club. I do not believe James Patterson wrote a line of this book. It is horrible. The characters have the correct names but not their "voice". The wording is extremely simple. The two story lines are chopped up and not smooth.
If I was James Patterson I would be embarrassed to put my name on this book. I know he has been co-writing most of his books lately but this is ridiculous.

Earl Phantomhive is a giant in the world of commerce, Queen Victoria's faithful servant...and a slip of a twelve-year-old boy. Fortunately, his loyal butler, Sebastian, is ever at his side, ready to carry out the young master's wishes. That Butler, finally in English!
By EGA_M10M
I first picked up this manga because I was drawn to the gorgeous art. If you're into Gothic Lolita and Gothic Aristocrat fashion, Black Butler is worth reading just for the characters' clothing. There's a reason this series is popular with cosplayers!

However, Black Butler isn't just pretty, it's also a good read. Yes, it gets off to a slow start. I admit I spent the first several chapters wondering if there was any plot at all, but I kept reading and I'm glad I did. Having read further volumes, I can assure you the plot does pick up. More characters are introduced later on, and some characters I wasn't impressed with at first really surprised me!

If you like your stories dark and supernatural with a hint of mystery and a touch of humor, then I highly recommend Black Butler.

That Butler, Making a Good First Impression
By R. Thompson
Meet Sebastian. He's the charming butler of a young nobleman, Ciel, head of the House of Phantomhive and its toy company. He excels at any task he is given, be it cooking, redecorating the Phantomhive mansion, or taking care of any of his charge's demands. In fact, he does these tasks so perfectly that he almost seems to be inhuman...

The first volume of Black Butler introduces us to this duo of servant and master and shows us the trials and tribulations that they have to face living in an alternate-world Victorian England (last I recall, people in the Victorian Era didn't own cell phones or video games). While its premise might sound similar to Kaori Yuuki's Count Cain Saga, it takes itself much less seriously. The first couple of chapters are essentially a comedy-filled slice of life centered around the young Earl and his servants, and even after the tone starts to darken, it still retains the same goofy sense of humor it had in earlier chapters, albeit with slightly less of it.

The artwork in this manga is gorgeous if a bit shojo-like. All of the characters are beautifully drawn with a great amount of detail spent on the costumes of the period. Even the background details and food in the volume are well-drawn, and it certainly provides a good deal of eye candy for its readers to look at.

The characters themselves, however, leave a little to be desired in this first volume. Ciel and Sebastian are intriguing enough, but the rest of the recurring cast comes off as a bit annoying. The Phantomhive staff, with the exception of Sebastian, are all a bit... bumbling to say the least, and while they aren't that bad, they do start to grate on your nerves after a few chapters. Likewise, Ciel's fiancee Elizabeth came off as somewhat irritating, if well-meaning, though hopefully her personality will grow a tad bit more tolerable in later volumes.

Overall though, Volume 1 of Black Butler was an enjoyable start to what could be a great new series. The setting and art were both very well done, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to fans of Godchild/ Count Cain who wouldn't mind reading something lighter or even to people who enjoyed the first volume of Pandora Hearts.

Unexpectedly Satisfying
By London Fog
I'm not normally a fan of magna; in fact I almost never read it, but my interest in this series was instantly piqued by the stunning artwork, sustained by the witty dialogue, and admittedly, the Yaoi, which seems to have been added intentionally. No complaints from here on that account, though. It was also a surprisingly good read, albeit the plot buildup seemed unduly slow at points, yet does pick up gears with Ciel's kidnapping mid way through. Despite the milder start-up pace, this never became dull or tiresome to read.

Mainly, I think that's due to the strong sense of characterization - Black Butler is one of those stories whose characters are memorable, likable and outshine the original magna. Makes wonderful fodder for fan fiction, but even more so than that, I found myself enjoying the 19th Century (somewhat steampunk-ish) atmosphere and the entire background story line. I have little patience for supernatural elements in fiction, graphic novels included, because they are often cliched to a slow and torturous death. Here, I am intrigued by the demon butler and how this very promising series will play out.

No More NO's!
I HATE No!
And actually, right now--I HATE YOU!"

Uh-oh...those three words just popped out before Leo could stop them!

In a reassuring manner, Robie H. Harris and Molly Bang portray what happens when a little boy feels SO frustrated and SO mad at a parent who has said NO all day long. Together, Harris and Bang delicately navigate not only the momentary angry feelings and outbursts of young children, but also the most profound bonds between a parent and a child.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 1—In this companion to When Sophie Gets Angry—Really, Really Angry… (Scholastic, 1999), Harris's wisdom and sense of humor regarding early childhood behavior complement Bang's depictions of a little boy's strong emotions. Vivid colors, scanned and digitally manipulated paper cutouts and photographs, and fonts of varied sizes portray the tension between a preoccupied mother and her bored youngster. Leo rolls tomatoes in the house until they burst, drops string beans into the fish bowl, and squeezes toothpaste all over the toilet, collecting maternal "no's" as he goes. Ultimately pushed off the page by a fiery, life-size negation, the boy enters his bedroom, declares it a no-rule zone, and takes out his frustration by coloring a frowning mommy on his wall. The confrontation builds as she ignores his dictate, and Leo utters the fateful phrase. The tiny boy in the next spread is a picture of remorse and regret. The denouement offers a realistic and loving dialogue that should be required reading in parenting and anger-management classes. Mom takes a deep breath, eventually gets a grip, and together they talk about when it is and isn't acceptable to verbalize this four-letter word. Children will delight in the realism of the collage elements (cloud-covered sheets, shaggy stuffed animals, exploding broccoli spears) and relate to the intensity of the scenes in which Leo struggles with his rage and lack of power. It may dawn on parents that sometimes playing is better than getting another thing done.—Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library

From Booklist
The gentle analytic quality of such nonfiction Harris classics as It’s Perfectly Normal (1994) gives way to a series of emotional jolts in this raucous and cathartic story about the three little words able to drum up uncomfortable feelings in any family: I hate you. Leo is having one of those days when his mom says no to everything he wants to do, no matter how much fun it is (“No rolling tomatoes across the floor!”). After being sent to his room and yelled at for drawing a mean picture on his wall, Leo unleashes the dreaded curse in a vibrant two-page centerpiece dominated by “I hate you!” in Bang’s raging, scribbling, cut-and-paste style. The illustrations satisfyingly mirror the text after this point, using gloomy colors and isolating perspectives to show how Leo and his mom deal with the anger, shame, and fear that ensue.  Both parents and children will find comfort here; we all say things we don’t mean, and Harris knows that there are another three little words that can help make it all better. Grades K-3. --Daniel Kraus

I *DISLIKE* this book, a lot.
By Michaela Beagen
The word "hate" is written in this book so many times, your child will be repeating the word in no time. This book is completely unhelpful. Luckily, I read it for a child discipline class... to myself.

Amazon, even your 1 star rating says "I hate it". C'mon!

Gets the point across
By Jennifer Donovan
This story will resonate with older preschoolers and mothers alike. Children get frustrated with rules and disappointments and as they learn to manage their feelings and their words, sometimes they let those not-so-nice three little words fly, "I hate you!"

Molly Bang's own bright and scribbled illustrations underscore the emotions conveyed by the story, and Leo's own drawings are used as an element of the story as well. I think it's a great way to open a conversation (or simply let the story teach without further pressing the issue).

This book will teach your child about unconditional love ... and "those other three words!"
By Deb
Leo's mother was always saying no. No, no, no, NO! She said that when he rolled tomatoes across the floor. Splat, one hit the wall! She said that when he put string beans in the fish bowl. Plop! She said that when he danced on the table and again when he squeezed toothpaste all over the toilet seat and down into the bowl. "Mommy, no more no's! I HATE no! His mommy explained to him that there were some things he was going to do that would make her say no, but there were some things he "should not do." Well, Leo got very angry and went to his room.

He got out his crayons and started to draw a mean old picture of his mean old mommy on the wall. He even "made her mouth turn down" and "made her hair stick way up in the air." He was still drawing when all of a sudden his mean old mommy came into the room and began saying that awful word NO again. He started yelling at his mommy saying things like she couldn't say that word in his room and he demanded that she leave. She didn't. All of a sudden Leo said something that shocked them . . . "I HATE YOU!" Oh, my! Leo had done something just awful to his mommy! What on Earth could he do now?

This is a story that will resonate with every parent or caretaker. This behavior is not at all uncommon and although unacceptable, a child needs to know that he or she is loved in spite of the unfortunate incident. Each individual handles this "crisis" in his or her own way, but a book like this is comforting. The art work is colorful and brings the emotional impact of this type of incident to life. This is the perfect book for any parent or caretaker . . . especially if you have heard "those other three words!"
