"A loyalty that holds fast will become a blade...and will someday...pierce those you hold dear."
By Leaf
From my Goodreads:
WOW...no spoilers.

PH has consistently pulled my FEELS apart. This volume dealt with the darkness in Oz's past, the cruelty and pain he suffered, and the loneliness he, Alice, and Gil all suffered. There is no break for them. It is like reality-hardships will fall upon you. Depending on how you carry yourself, how you endure it, will shape the person you become.

We learn that The Intention of the Abyss, is essentially the creator of the Abyss. And the purpose of the Abyss is to create Chains. These Chains provide powers that serve those who enter into contracts with them. If done so illegally, the organization known as Pandora, must wipe out the illegal contractors. Pandora was created by the Four Dukedoms, which are the 4 leading families that govern the country of Pandora.

What we know of the 4 Dukedoms so far:
Vessalius dukedom-Oz's family
Nightray dukedom-suspected of involvement of the murder of Oz's mother

See, it's getting easier to understand the plot and world now! But there's so much more to this all.

The Dukedoms are able to rule because they have opened doors to the Abyss. Each Dukedom has tamed a powerful Chain Monster. With these monster Chains, the Dukedoms investigate the Abyss, wipe out illegal contractors...and spy on the other families. And the Nightrays own the Raven. A Chain that has black wings can open the Abyss...and this plays an essential role in Gil's past.

Break makes it clear that Gil might not simply want to save his master. That he is in fact obsessed with Oz for the kindness he has been shown. And that his loyalty could easily cut down those who are dear to him.

All in all, best PH volume yet! Very dark, emotionally gripping and intriguing. So glad I checked this series out.

Great background...things are getting complex....
By Karissa Eckert
This book adds quite a bit of backstory to our characters’ pasts. When B Rabbit/Alice asks about Oz’s parents and Oz runs into a young boy whom he sympathizes with; we get some flashbacks into Oz’s relationship with his father that explain a lot about his personality.

We also find out more about what happened to Gil during the time when Oz was in the Abyss. Additionally we are introduced in more depth to the Nightray Dukedom and get to learn more about Vincent and Echo.

As with previous books there is an action packed fight between B Rabbit and an escaped Chain. With all these escaped Chains our characters are beginning to suspect something is afoot…

The artwork is well done and pretty easy to follow. The plot is getting fairly complex and jumps between groups of characters abruptly...so the story is harder to follow. I had to go back and reread things a number of times to make sure I understood what was going on. Because of this I didn’t like this book quite as much as volume 2.

Overall a well done addition to this series. Things are getting a bit convoluted and complex to follow. However, I am enjoying all the interesting background we get on our characters. I plan on continuing the series.

“If parents are the ones who give birth to life… are they also the ones who create a reason for your existence?”
By Xyon McKell
Oz needs time to come to grips to the changes that occurred while he was in the abyss as well as his own new status quo, but those who wish to use him for their own ends won’t necessarily cooperate with his need for a respite.

After the big reveal and somewhat overwhelming info dumps of last volume, this installment has much better pacing and does a better job of conveying important information clearly while still appropriately keeping certain things as lingering questions.

Mysterious elements and exploration of key background stories about the main characters are mixed nicely with action scenes and it’s all delivered with strong emotional impact. The supporting cast is becoming more well rounded and interesting, giving the manga more to entice the reader with than just Oz and his connection to the abyss.

I feel like these chapters hit all the right notes in terms of forwarding the story without giving too much away too soon, and if the author can keep it up going forward Pandora Hearts is going to be a thoroughly captivating and entertaining ride.
