Grade 1-4-In this affectionate and humorous pair of books, Parr explores the differences among grandparents: Some grandmas have a lot of purses; Some grandpas can wiggle their ears. He also notes their similarities: Some grandmas live with a grandpa; Some grandpas live with a grandma. The books end with a short message about grandparents and a reminder to tell them that you love them. The artist's skillful use of bright neon, supersaturated colors, thickly outlined simple figures, and brief text combine to make the books lots of fun. Good additions to any collection and wonderful choices for a storytime.-Linda Staskus, Parma Regional Library, OH

Shows there is a world full of Grandmas and each one is special.
By Alayne Kay Christian - Author of Butterfly Kisses for Grandma and Grandpa
My granddaughter loves the childlike illustrations and brightly colored pages. This is a book she enjoys by herself because the art seems as important as the words. Being a long-distance Grandma, I like that this book keeps Grandma in the forefront of a child's mind. It shows there is a world full of Grandmas and each one is special.

The Grandma Book is Delightful!
By T. L. Eichin
The Grandma Book is delightfully written with simple, primary-color filled pages that grab a little one's attention. It is great for helping little ones to see how grandmas, and people in general, are different and in celebrating those differences. A must for every Grandma to give to their precious grandchildren.

Great Book, Needs Punctuation
By A. Whipple
The Grandma Book is cute book by Todd Parr that celebrates grandmothers-and their differences.

"Some grandmas like to make you eat a lot. Some grandmas like to make you things. All grandmas like to hear from you." (Punctuation added. That's right. There is no punctuation in this picture book until the final page which is a bit like an author's note since it says "Love, Todd". The lack of punctuation is my only dislike.)

The illustrations are bold and bright and have the bold black outline that is also popular in our beloved Maisy books. I definitely recommend this book to families who want a little reminder of the love of grandmothers and how special they are. One of my favorite sets of pages says, "Some grandmas live with a grandpa. Some grandmas live with their friends." (Once again, punctuation added.) It lets kids know that a retirement home or even a nursing home is still a home for grandma! The back cover even has a place for the reader to place a photo of Grandma!

I think The Grandma Book is great for a wide range of ages! I highly recommend it, and just wish that author Todd Parr had used periods in his writing.

I thank Little, Brown for providing this great book for us to enjoy for review purposes. We think their books are fabulous!

Confronted with the approaching death of a loved one, most people are uncertain, fearful, and uncomfortable regarding their role. Oncologist Buckman has written a sensitive, compassionate guide to their dilemma. With deep insight, gained from many years of practice, he describes the dying process and provides practical, concrete suggestions for bringing a degree of comfort to the dying individual. His advice is illustrated with many brief, descriptive vignettes of actual cases covering a wide spectrum of ages, personalities, family situations, and responses. While no one wants to die, as he pointedly remarks, the death of a loved one is something most of us must face at some time--and his book serves admirably to assuage the pain of the inevitable.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, October 2009: An investigation into a cold-blooded murder introduces Detective Harry Bosch to a Chinese underworld lurking in the dark recesses of the City of Angels. Its tentacles are far reaching, yet it remains shrouded in secrecy due to time-honored cultural traditions that keep the exploited from speaking out. To the victim's family, Bosch promises revenge, but when his own daughter suddenly becomes a target, he promises blood. However, working a case with leads on both sides of the Pacific provides little room (or time) for error. 9 Dragons is a gritty, coffee-and-cigarettes crime thriller full of smart twists and generous helpings of suspense. Fans of Michael Connelly can expect another exceptional thrill ride, while newcomers will be immediately engaged by the tortured and unrelenting Bosch. "He knew one day it would come to this, that the darkness would find [his daughter] and that she would be used to get him," writes Connelly. "That day was now." --Dave Callanan

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. The murder of an elderly Chinese owner of a liquor store thrusts Bosch into the unfamiliar world of Chinese immigrants, Asian gangs, and the ruthless triad crime syndicate. Bosch works the case with his usual tenacity; threats warning him to drop the case only fuel his desire to find the old man's killer. Having narrated previous Bosch books, Cariou knows the character inside and out. His portrayal of the iconic L. A. detective conveys all his irascibility and world-weariness. This book gives us a closer look at Bosch, the father, and Cariou conveys this human side with emotional clarity and believability. A Little, Brown hardcover (Reviews, Sept. 21). (Oct.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
By the time their series reach a 15th installment, authors tend to fall back on the status quo, putting familiar characters in recognizable situations. Not so with Connelly, who continues to explore the darkest reaches of Harry Bosch's psyche in ways that will surprise even Connelly's die-hard fans. In fact, it is the author's deft combination of police procedural and taut psychological suspense that separates Bosch from other fictional crime detectives. A few critics thought that the condensed time frame led to some unbelievable scenes, but the majority hailed Nine Dragons as one of Connelly's best. Introducing plotlines that will influence Bosch well into the future (his career in books has so far covered nearly two decades, starting with the 1990 Edgar-winning Black Echo), Nine Dragons once again illustrates Connelly's magic touch.

The Best Harry Bosch Tale Since Echo Park!
By Michael A. Newman
After disappointing Harry Bosch tales (The Overlook, The Brass Verdict) Connelly has brought back the Harry that hooked me in the earlier tales. Harry is still back in homicide (no closer duty for him) and during a slow night he is asked to investigate a shooting in a "rougher" section of LA. Harry and his partner (Ferras) grudgingly take the assignment and learn that a convenience store owner was murdered in his store. The case draws Harry's interest because he remembers the store and that the owner was once kind to him several years earlier. He assures the owner's son that he will catch the culprit.

As Harry starts to realize that this might not have been a routine robbery but a possible execution by a Triad hitman. Harry starts to zero in on a suspect and then receives a threatening call to tell him to back off. Harry shrugs it off and continues but then his investigation stalls when he receives a video showing that his daughter (Maddy) being kidnapped in Hong Kong. He rushes off to save her realizing that if he is not back by the end of the weekend a possible suspect in the shooting will be set free.

It is a tense plane ride to Hong Kong and Harry feels powerless because there is nothing he can do in the air. When he gets to Hong Kong he is aided by his ex-wife (Eleanor Wish) and her boyfriend. Harry has limited clues but through very good forensic science he was able to possibly know where to look for Maddy. It becomes a race to find Maddy because any delay could mean that she might already be dead.

The tension of the chase is so tense you can cut it with a knife and the "determined " Harry definitely shows through. There is one sequence at a boat where the action is pulse pounding and the tension rife.
The book also has a short but excellent appearance by Mickey Haller (the Lincoln Lawyer and Harry's half brother) and there are references to Jack McEvoy (Connelly's other main character). As long as Mr. Connelly can deliver Harry Bosch tales of this caliber, Harry will continue to be one of the most intriguing law enforcement figures in fiction today!

Not Up To Standards
By Christopher Gwyn
In his latest thriller featuring LAPD Detective Harry Bosch, author Michael Connelly branches out into international waters. The plot involves Bosch investigating a murder of the Asian owner of a liquor store in South-Central LA. For translating purposes, Bosch calls in an Asian Detective, Chu, to help with the case. What unfolds appears to be a Asian Triad gang related extortion/murder. Meanwhile, Bosch's teenaged daughter is living in Hong Kong with her mother, who works for a swanky Hong Kong casino. After arresting a suspect, Bosch is warned to back off the case or eles "there will be consequences". Well, he soon receives a video on his phone showing his daughter being held hostage in Hong Kong. Is there a leak in the department? Is Chu playing both sides of the fence? Bosch drops everything to rush to Hong Kong to try to find his daughter. Similarities with the movie "Taken" are obvious. This is where the story starts to become somewhat far-fetched. The way he is able to find his daughter is somewhat ridiculous and things are written with a by-the-numbers predictibility. I'm not going to get into details but the ending is rather lame and unsatisfying and I look forward to a better effort from Connelly next time.

Outstanding in every way!
By Brian Baker
I've long been a Connelly fan, especially of the Harry Bosch series. But I have to tell you, Connelly's surpassed himself with this one. As I've thought about it, I think this may well be the best Bosch book ever.

I won't rehash the whole story line here, as you can see that in the two other member reviews already up, and on the product page. Instead, I'd like to focus on why I've made such a grandiose statement.

The Bosch series is long-running and deservedly very successful. Of course, it's had its ups and downs; all series do. But Bosch is an iconic character from the Clint Eastwood mold of Dirty Harry and the Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns: the loner who battles through any obstacles to see right prevail and justice triumph, even if he has to break the rules. Eastwood's made a career of this, as has Connelly. That's a good thing. I like that kind of entertainment, as do a whole lot of other people, obviously.

However, in this book Connelly breaks new ground for the character, exploring an emotional vulnerability - his love for his daughter, and how it animates him - that we haven't seen before. It's the driving force of the story, and to continue the Eastwood analogy, it's the same variance on a "trademark" character we saw Eastwood explore in some of his amazing later works like "Unforgiven", "Million Dollar Baby", and "Gran Torino".

Connelly also takes Bosch into an exotic and fascinating new locale: Hong Kong. This is really a treat, and he does it very well. I'd have liked to have seen even more of his take on the area, as I know it well, having been there many times, but take it from me: what you do see is a really accurate portrayal of one of the world's truly unique locales.

The story moves forward in a very driving yet well-disciplined fashion; very exciting; intellectually stimulating, and well- and throroughly-plotted.

Six stars! But I guess I'll have to settle for five.

"More years ago than I care to reckon up, I met Richard Feynman." So begins Herman Wouk's trenchant and exhilarating book on navigating the divide between science and religion.

Told by Feynman in that first meeting that he must learn "the language God talks"-calculus-Wouk set in motion the lifelong inquiry that has culminated in this rich, compact volume. Wouk draws on stories from his own life, on key events from the twentieth century, and on encounters not just with Feynman but with other masters of science and religion to address the eternal questions of why we are here, what purpose faith serves, and how scientific facts fit into the picture.

At age 94, Wouk embarks on an autobiographical journey through his monumental writings (The Caine Mutiny; The Winds of War; War and Remembrance), people he has met in his life, world events, and books he has read (including the Talmud) to weave a testament of faith. Throughout the book, he returns to his friendship with Nobel laureateRichard Feynman, whose work as a scientist on the atomic bomb and life as a humanist challenge the author's Orthodox Jewish beliefs. Along the way the reader meets other scientists and their accomplishments and also some of Wouk's fictional characters. What most impresses Wouk is the big bang (the first three minutes) and the small bang (the universe giving birth to the mind) so that humans could comprehend God. Ever so faithful to his Jewish heritage, he discusses how research in the scientific and secular world strengthened his faith. This book will interest any person of faith who has followed Wouk's storied career and read his fiction. (Apr.)

From Booklist
The first half of Wouk’s third book on religion (after This Is My God, 1959, and The Will to Live On, 1999) is as engaging as his megaselling historical novels. It’s about his encounters with famous scientists, foremost among them physicist Richard Feynman, who suggested Wouk learn the “language God talks”—calculus. Wouk tried, unsuccessfully, but anyway kept on meeting and palavering with scientists, a habit acquired researching the atom bomb for The Winds of War (1971) and War and Remembrance (1978). His recounting of the science history he learned, predominantly about space exploration, is done so personably that stargazing laypersons ought to be tickled pink. He uses a little paleoanthropology and more WWII research to bridge from science to religion but then, unfortunately, bogs down abstracting the Battle of Leyte and Holocaust episodes in the war novels. He finishes well, though, with an imaginary dialogue with Feynman that winningly binds him and the physicist as Jews and affirms the continuing viability of questioning God. Hard not to like. --Ray Olson

Review
"In a crowded book market filled with self-serving and redundant theories about humankind's place in the grand scheme, it is rare to encounter an original, honest, charming voice. Such is the case with Wouk's latest work....Wouk's humility, humor and insight make the book a joy to read and a wonder to contemplate...Authentic, accessible prose mixed with real insight."―Kirkus Reviews

"As engaging as [Wouk's] megaselling historical novels."―Booklist

"Herman Wouk is one of the wisest men I have ever known. In aviation the best information comes from pilots themselves, in airplanes, not from air-traffic controllers or meteorologists on the ground, in some big air-conditioned office. In The Language God Talks, Herman sends us all a most valuable pilot report."―Jimmy Buffett, Vanity Fair

"The Language God Talks is simply and wonderfully an old and gifted writer's fascinating look back on a world that, for 94 years, he has called home."―Seed Magazine

"Wouk is a great storyteller, and his anecdotes about meeting with brilliant thinkers such as Feynman are entertaining. With Wouk's conversational writing style and humble approach to his subject, The Language God Talks is a fun, intellectually engaging book."―Doug Childers, Richmond-Times Dispatch

"A short, satisfying read. Wouk's writing is so captivating, still as elegant as ever. It demonstrates that Wouk hasn't lost a whit of his storytelling genius."―Dinesh Ramde, Associated Press

"A kind of compact philosophical autobiography and a unique opportunity for readers to glimpse the innermost musings and intimate experiences that prepared Wouk for the many books that he has bestowed upon us."―The Jewish Journal

"The Language God Talks is a seminal read. In this book there is a true to life drama: It is Wouk himself, torn between two worlds, and reconciling them both."―Lee Chottiner, The Jewish Chronicle

"In this book, as in his previous ones, whenever Herman Wouk speaks of God it is always with both exquisite curiosity and warmth."―Elie Wiesel

"Wouk's questions are pure, his exploration heartfelt, and his remarkable lifetime of experience couldn't be more relevant or necessary."―Jonathan Safran Foer

"A stunning rumination on life's important questions by a masterful storyteller."―Marisha Pessl, author of Special Topics in Calamity Physics

Science, Theology ... Memoir
By emmejay
From the epigraph:
"It doesn't seem to me that this fantastically marvelous universe [...] can merely be a stage so that God can watch human beings struggle for good and evil -- which is the view that religion has. The stage is too big for the drama." --Richard Feynman

In THE LANGUAGE GOD TALKS, 94-year-old (!) Herman Wouk explores that cosmological stage and that human drama, and does it mostly through stories, including memoir.

He begins with science and the Big Bang, setting the enormity of the stage by recapping space exploration (including the race-for-space and the shuttle disasters) and the telescope's estimation/definition of the universe. He includes anecdotes about prominent scientists, including their theology (or not), particularly physicist Richard Feynman, who Wouk met while researching the Manhattan Project for his 1970s WWII novels (The Winds of War and War and Remembrance). Then he moves to the Small Bang (the birth of the mind, exemplified best through art, he says) and explores dramas in his own life through prompts from Tevya, Confucius, Job, and characters in his novels.

It's a small book with an agile, imaginative voice that's easy to read. But it's not necessarily simple to understand -- vignette-ish and symbolic, with a whole-is-greater-than-its-parts feel that invites a re-read. I came to this book new to Wouk, and developed an admiration, even a fondness, for him, and an interest in his previous works. This book seems directed to pop-sci fans and religious believers, but I think philosophers and lovers of literature (especially those familiar with Wouk) will like it more.

The Language of Science
By tmtrvlr
The Language God, Talks on Science and Religion by Herman Wouk is not so much about God, but the gentle philosophical musings of the author as he looks back on his life. He writes about his meeting with a theoretical physicist, Richard Phillips Feynman, which seemed to have quite an impact on his life. The author obviously has an interest in the heavens, but in a secular way, as he discusses space exploration. He describes his witness to the liftoff of Apollo 11 and what he believes is the future of space travel.

I was quite moved as I read his account of viewing the Dead Sea Scrolls in an underground wing of Jerusalem's Israel Museum. This was not an easy book for me to read and understand, but I will accept the blame as my own shortcoming. Herman Wouk is an intellectual - and I am not.

A not-quite autobiography
By E. Goldstein
Chances are, this is the closest thing we are going to get to a Herman Wouk autobiography. Not that The Language God Talks sets out to be any such thing. Its intention is to explain why Wouk believes. Sure, Richard Feynman, with a father born in Minsk same as Wouk's father was born in Minsk, refused to have a bar mitzvah. Sure the popular science Wouk reads--and Wouk apparently reads a lot of it--mostly considers belief unnecessary, when it bothers to consider the matter at all. Sure modernity's arrow is in the direction of non-belief. Wouk believes, he revels in the complexity of the Talmud, he adores the Prophets and the Psalms, he actually goes to the synagogue on a regular basis. Those of us with a soft spot in our hearts for this tradition don't see that explanation is necessary or perhaps possible. But we're not the ones writing the book.

To be honest, if you are really interested in the arguments for belief or non-belief there are better places to go. What this book has that the others don't have are fascinating snippets of autobiography. Wouk's encounters with Richard Feynman. How Wouk conceived the novels on WWll, and how the conception changed as he was trying to put it together. How he met the man who showed up in the novels as Pug Henry. How Wouk researched the books for years and years, and how at one point he considered himself in a race to finish them in the time he had left. Even hints on who were the originals of the characters in The Caine Mutiny. And along the way, how Wouk sought out Raul Hilberg, and how the University of Vermont, where Hilberg taught, had no idea that a great historian resided in its midst.

Somewhere in the book Wouk tells the story of an engineer who spent all his professional working life in Australia, which he has come to love, and who eventually decides to retire to his native state of Nevada. Before he leaves, he looks around, knowing he might never see Australia again. Wouk doesn't hide what he is doing. He is lovingly looking around at his own creations, as if he might not see them again. His own invented characters live for him. The book sometimes has an elegiac tone.

Of course he only talks about what he wants to talk about. There is lots, lots and lots he leaves out: his book, his privilege. Hint to those who write biography: here is an interesting subject, with a fine humanist mind, who lived in an interesting time. But we take what we can get. For those of us who care about his novels, this book, take it all in all, is worth it.

One of the best novels about adolescence ever
By L Goodman-Malamuth
I devoured this book when it came out in 1975, and it still holds up: Anyone who was ever a teenage girl, who loves to read about New York or Boston, or the late 1940s. Anne Bernays is a master prose stylist, and this is still my favorite of her books.

Review
"Petersen's satisfying third zom-com shows that the Living with the Dead series has surprising staying power." ---Publishers Weeky

About the Author
A Facebook application once told Jesse Petersen that she'd only survive a day in a zombie outbreak, but she doesn't believe that. For one, she's a good shot and two, she has an aversion to bodily fluids, so she'd never go digging around in zombie goo. Until the zombie apocalypse, she lives in the Midwest with her husband and two cats. Find out more about the author at www.jessepetersen.net.

More fun with David and Sarah, and zombies!!
By MyBookishWays
In Eat Slay Love we rejoin my favorite post zombie apocalypse married couple, Sarah and David, as they attempt to get to the rumored "Wall" in the east, hoping to find safety from the society that's let them down. I mean, zombies are the ultimate letdown, right? Of course, with these two, you know it's not gonna be smooth sailing, and the seas get pretty rough during this outing. See, there was an incident in the last novel that might have changed David a bit, and Sarah is noticing more and more, well, odd things about him. Sarah is also hoping she'll be reunited with her mom and dad, even though the chances of that are slim. All that aside, they've got some precious cargo with them that could change the face of the world forever. Add to the mix a stalkerazzi journalist that may have her own secret agenda, an aging rockstar that seems to have lost his band, and his wits, to the zombies, a camp full of people that aren't about to let strangers into the mix (think Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome here), and of course all the zombie killin' action you can handle, and you've got a read that you won't want to put down!
I adore this series, and it just keeps getting better and better. Sarah narrates with her trademark snark, and even though you'll giggle, you'll cringe too, because Ms. Petersen lets the dark humor fly, and the story is tempered with moments of levity that will definitely bring you down to earth. This kind of writing is hard to do, weaving humor into admittedly horrid situations, but the author manages with a sure hand and never lets the pacing falter. There are a few twists in this one that left me smiling and the ending leaves off with plenty of material for lots more fun with this kick-ass couple. Do they find the "wall"? Does Sarah reunite with her family? And just what is wrong with David? You'll get your questions answered in this one, I promise, and trust me, you won't want to put it down!

Another great addition to this series!
By Kate
EAY SLAY LOVE, by Jesse Petersen, is the continuation of the Living with the Dead series following Sarah and David's journey to the "Wall" to (hopefully) get the only known zombie-cure to government scientists to end the zombie/human war. But as usual nothing is easy for this once-almost-divorced couple, they are faced with cults, David's strange new bitten-related behaviors, teaming up with a TMZ-like stalkerazzi, a druggie rockstar...and of course BRAAAAIIN eating zombies.

I have been dying to read this next installment of one of my favorite horror series's, and I have to say I was very pleased!! My favorite still-together (why are there not more of those in fiction?) couple is back with another huge adventure on their hands. I love the relationship between Sarah and David. They truly are my hero couple and I always get nervous when things (zombies, other cute men/women, zombie escape routes involving splitting up) threaten to tear them apart.

I liked how Petersen developed the cure senario with David. He was cured but subtle differences in his behavior suggested he became some sort of zombie/super human hybrid. And Sarah found tooth and nail to keep her once nerd, now buff husband by her side.

The other main characters, Nicole and McCray were annoying at first (probably because I thought they were going to get Sarah and David killed) but they grew on me as the book wore on. A big theme in this book was secrets. Sarah kept the cure a secret, and as I slowly learned more about Nicole and McCray I knew that all kept secrets would blow up in the characters faces at some point.

One thing (of many) that I love about this series is that there are multiple layers to each book. The overall one being to survive, but I love how Petersen makes little adventures and journeys (physically and mentally) for her characters. It really makes this series enjoyable to read. Definitely pick this one up!

A fun romp through the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse
By Vickie T.
Yeah, I know, it doesn't seem like the words "fun" and "zombie apocalypse" ought to be found in the same sentence, but Eat, Slay, Love really was a fun summer beach-type read. Clearly, a good sense of humor makes even a zombie apocalypse more bearable. I thought the tone of the book was somewhat similar to that of MaryJanice Davidson's Undead series.

A friend loaned me this book and I started it without realizing that it was the third book in the series. The fact that I had not read the first two books did not interfere with my enjoyment of the third, but I did immediately order book 1 from Amazon and have the second and fourth (last?) books on my Wish List.

If you like books about zombies and appreciate a heroine who is always ready with a quip or sarcastic remark, I recommend this book - although I kind of wish I had started with the first one and read them in order.

This is the Moment You've All Been Waiting For!
By A Man of Manga
*Spoilers*
Here it is. If you are fans of the Soul Eater anime and want to see where the manga derivates from, this is your go to volume. Obviously, the first two chapters still follow the same story, but that all changes with the introduction of Joe Buttaki (B.J.). He did appear in the anime, but in that case he was creating an anti brew tool. Here, he has the ability similar to Maka with the ability to percept souls and tell if one is lying or not. Of course Marie-Sensei just has to have a history with him and boy does she look sexy in that dress. It's all pretty funny untill Joe asks her on a date and while he walks to the restaurant he senses all the witches and is killed by a mysterious assailant. Meanwhile Medusa is being her Medusa self and has manipulated Stein to frame him for B.J's murder. Whether Medusa killed B.J. though remains to be seen. Other differences you may notice is how Maka finds out about Crona's betrayal and Black Star's increasing path to the Kishin. Overall, this volume was great and there will clearly be more differences to come. It gets an easy five out of five.

Asura's madness is starting to spread even further after the Battle for Brew. We find that Professor Stein's madness is getting worse and also that there's more than to BJ than coffee. There's a spy within the DWMA, will he find out before it's too late? What will Maka do to help Crona? Find out in Volume 10 of Soul Eater!
