Another Barsotti Gem

There's no kinder commentary on human/canine society than Barsotti's funny take on people as pups/pups as people. This is not just for dog lovers, it's a great gift or bedside pal for the down-in-the-mouth, stressed-out crankypants who needs to connect with his/her inner pooch. Would that be you? How do you beat a dog judge commenting to a doggy defendant, "As unbelievable as it may seem to you today, this court was once a puppy too." If you haven't collected Charley's works, start now! Add some grins to your goofball world.

Who doesn't love puppies, for corn's sake?!?

I've always loved Barsotti; his intelligence, drier-than-dust humor, razor-sharp wit and economy with line is unmatched, in my opinion. But there's a special, perfect innocence to his Pup cartoons, a sweetness that always elicits an "awww" rather than "ergh." This collection is long overdue.

I just love this. Mr. Barsotti's drawing are spare and simple and yet convey a range of emotion, both comical and not. I'm thinking of buying this book as a gift for several other dog lovers. I just wish it were longer.

PreSchool-Grade 1-In these companion titles, Parr celebrates characteristics of mothers and fathers, and points out differences. For instance, "Some daddies teach you how to walk Some daddies teach you how to ride a skateboard"; "Some mommies fly kites Some mommies fly planes." The simple texts are accompanied by joyful, childlike illustrations done in vibrant colors, with faces that are yellow, tan, blue, purple, and other hues; figures and objects are outlined with thick, black lines. Parents of both genders are shown working at home and holding cleaning supplies. A few pages share the same text, for example, "All daddies [or mommies] like to watch you sleep!" The books close with the statement that all mommies [or daddies] "love to kiss and hug you" and "want you to be who you are!" While these titles do not overtly address single-parent households and nontraditional families, Parr allows youngsters to see the similarities that many families share by recognizing differences.

Lost in Translation?

I have read all of the previous Dwarves books, and enjoyed them thoroughly. But this one, for some reason I had trouble following. I had to keep backtracking as some things did not (and even after getting to the end STILL do not) make sense. I am going to give it another read though, when I have the time. Maybe it was my own interpretation of events that was clouded due to a long work day. I love this Author and Tungdil so much, that I'm willing to give them another go. :)

Not What I Was Expecting

I was excited to read the last book in this series, but was kinda disappointed by the ending, of which I don't want to say anything about because I would want other fantasy lovers to read for themselves. Some of the book was a little hard to follow, a little more so than past books. I would say that I still enjoy The Dwarves and The War of the Dwarves the best in this series. That's just my opinion though, judge for yourself.

WELL THAT GOT DARK AND MORBID FAST.

I admit, I was kind of thrown off because after the events of volume 6, we finally get to see the stress lift off of our characters shoulder's for a moment, and see what they are like drunk. It's hilarious!!

And Oz develops! He sets new beliefs for himself.

In the process, his new path terrifies Gilbert, who is scared that Oz is changing and not him, who has been so obsessed with getting him back that he hasn't changed a bit.

And then, we go to meet Duke Rufus Barma, who knows all, and just might know more about the Tragedy of Sablier and Oz's sin then anyone else...AND THIS IS WHEN STUFF GETS REAL.

I'm not a really squeamish person...so when stuff started to happen to Break in this volume I felt really uncomfortable. We finally see his past, and I admit that I had to put this book down a few times because it was just so disturbing to say the least.

Thankfully, many comedic moments abound in the beginning, from Sharron introducing Alice to "...Bibles known as romance novels" and LOTS OF ROMANTIC DEVELOPMENT between Oz and Alice.

So...after this I have to read the next one NOW because as absolutely CREEPY that was, I have to KNOW what happens next...but I also don't want to because my babies are suffering sooooo much now:(

Watching the Anime made me thirst for the whole story.
Digital manga is great! The story itself keeps you wanting to finish the whole series.
There are a lot of characters to keep track of, but it is easy.
Remember page turning is left to right.

This is easily my favorite volume! There is a certain scene i find really funny xD But the rest of the volume also kept me on the edge of my seat. The package arrived when it was supposed to and in mint condition. A great buy.

Yoon-Kyung Kim (born January 6th) and Eun-Sook Jung (born October 25th) form the Korean art duo known as Kara. Their first book, Terra, won the first annual "Cake Comic Book Award" in Korea. The team debuted in a bi-weekly Korean manhwa magazine called Bijou. Kara have enjoyed success with the English language releases of their other works, Demon Diary and Angel Diary (released by Yen Press).

YunHee Lee is an author living and working in Korea who paired with the duo Kara for the bulk of the manhwa DEMON DIARY and worked as the sole author on ANGEL DIARY, its sequel.

I enjoy many aspects of it

These last four volumes really turned me away from the series. I was not expecting it to end so....well, differently. I enjoy many aspects of it, but really, trying to mesh all the reader's opinions and thoughts in it, kind of killed the momentum. I feel like the story took a nose dive after volume 9 and became a different series altogether.

A Satisfying end

Was it a spectacular ending? No, not really, but it was good enough....it wrapped up the story nicely, even if it might have been a tad rushed...and I never got to see Dong-young's dad's face in full....
The rest of the volume and the next, contains side stories....I personally liked the side stories....
All in all it's a solid volume....

Malcolm Gladwell's "What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures" is a compilation of the author's favorite work from The New Yorker, where he has been a staff writer since 1996. This book is divided into three parts 1. Obsessives, Pioneers, and Other Varieties of Minor Genius 2. Theories, Predictions, and Diagnoses 3. Personality, Character, and Intelligence. In the first part, Gladwell includes portraits of a pitchman for kitchen gadgets who is so persuasive that he could sell clothing to a nudist. In addition, he discusses three female advertising pioneers, a canny investment strategist, and a "dog whisperer" who is able to tame even the most intransigent canine. What these people have in common is an understanding of how human beings (and four-legged creatures) think and feel, supreme self-confidence, and the ability to promote themselves and their ideas. The second part deals with the art of thinking and seeing clearly. Gladwell describes the series of events that led to the Challenger explosion and the collapse of Enron. Could these catastrophic events have been foreseen and prevented? In part three, the author discusses various aspects of genius and talent, and whether it is possible to profile criminal behavior or predict how a prospective employee will fare on the job.

"What the Dog Saw" has some intriguing passages that will impel readers to say, "I never thought of this subject in quite that way before." The provocative Gladwell enjoys toying with conventional wisdom and challenging our preconceived notions. For instance, in one article, he defends certain forms of plagiarism, a transgression that many would consider indefensible. In another, he states that tragedies such as the Challenger disaster are unavoidable, since for a variety of reasons, "we don't really want the safest of all possible worlds." This water-cooler book will have people arguing vehemently that Malcolm Gladwell is either out of his mind or, conversely, that he is a courageously honest writer who dares to tell it like it is.

Unfortunately, there are several dreary chapters, including one that analyzes why one particular brand of ketchup is so popular and another that explores the poor judgment of John Rock, the inventor of the birth control pill. In addition, Gladwell occasionally indulges in hair-splitting: Do most of us really care about the fine distinctions between panicking and choking? On the other hand, there is a fascinating section that explains why mammograms, as a diagnostic tool, are inexact and hard to interpret. In addition, Gladwell makes a good case for the notion that intelligence failures, such as the ones that preceded 9/11, are easy to condemn in hindsight but may be more understandable when viewed in context. Malcolm Gladwell's strength has always been his ability to tell an original and entertaining story and connect it to our everyday experiences. He does just that in his best pieces, but there are others that probably should not have made the cut.
