The PERFECT baby/toddler book!

As an avid reader and writer, I have to say this is the perfect baby book. This was one of the first books I bought for my son as a newborn, and even though he is now 2 years old, it is still one that we read regularly. It is simple enough that it could hold his attention from a very young age, yet it has taught him so many skills and has grown with him. Probably best of all, it is not boring! (And that's saying a lot when you're the parent that has to read a book over and over and over again!) It is simply adorable, and the ending always puts a smile on both of our faces.
The ability of a book to be interactive is extremely important when reading to a baby or toddler, and Magsamen executes it perfectly with this book. Each page features a mommy animal, and when you lift the flap you find the matching baby animal (or animals). When my son was young, I lifted the flaps for him, resulting in many smiles. Now that he is older, he loves to lift them himself. The flaps are made of card stock, so they can bend, but I have found that they are secure to the page, and are fairly sturdy so they have held up well. The front cover also features a squishy fabric Easter basket, perfect for touch-and-feel tactile stimulation.
The adorable artwork throughout this book (animals that look like they have been "stitched" to the page) is positively delightful. Furthermore, the pages include enough detail to stimulate discussions between my son and I (or stretching the words of the book before he could talk) but they are not too busy to be overstimulating. You can discuss the sounds the animals make, or the food the animals eat, or the concept of mother and baby. There is so much to talk about while reading this book, even though it is very simple. If I could describe it in one word, it would be "rich." Reading this book taught my son his first animal noises. His first "word" was actually "Moo!"
This book is even great for introducing your child to pretend play. I began pretending to "feed" my son the vegetables on each page. When he was only a few months old, he was confused, thinking I was actually going to something in his mouth. But as he got older, he began to pretend to "eat" the vegetables himself, and even share some with me!
The little rhyme at the end of the book is always our favorite part: "There are many mommies and babies on the farm, it's true. But my favorite baby in the world is..." Lift the barn flap to find the word "You!" This ending fosters so much positive interaction between parent and child, and really is a great way to end the day letting your child know he or she is loved.
As you can see, I have so many good things to say about this book. It may be my favorite children's book in the world. Who knew. Reading is such an important part of a baby's daily routine. If you're having trouble finding books you want to read to your baby or toddler, pick up this book. You'll be glad you did.

Great Book

We received this book as a gift at Easter. The book has chicks and an Easter basket on the front, so it looks like an Easter book. However, it really isn't. It is more of a Mommy & babies book. It goes through the various animals. It states what the mommy/baby version is (cows/calves, sheep/lambs, hens/chicks, pigs/piglets) and what sounds they make (moo, baa, peep, oink). The last page is cute. It says "there are many mommies and babies on the farm, its true. But my favorite baby is the world is....(lift flap) You! It is one of my favorites to read to the babies. They seem to like it too.
