PreSchool-Grade 3-Arthur has chicken pox. When the "polka dots" threaten to keep him from the circus, neither Grandma Thora's treats, get-well cards from his class, nor all the cherry cough drops in the world can console him. Meanwhile, he's getting so much attention that indignant D.W. tries a pink marker and pale powder to divert some of it to herself. The familiar drawings, with all the wonderful details of family clutter, are reassuring. Arthur's family is so loving, and the ending so satisfying that there's not much else to say. A must-have.

Ages 4-7. When Arthur comes down with chicken pox on Monday, his chief concern is that he'll miss the much anticipated family trip to the circus on Saturday. Younger sister D. W. envies the treats and attention Arthur is getting so much that she makes fun of his "polka dots," pretends that she is sick, and torments Arthur about missing the circus. When Saturday rolls around, Arthur is well, but D. W. has the pox and can't go to the circus. Arthur's many fans will enjoy D. W.'s cunning in needling her brother, and Arthur's inability to resist gloating in the end. Chicken pox may provide the plot, but the subject is sibling rivalry. The cartoonlike ink-and-watercolor illustrations are sure to attract young children, even those meeting Arthur and D. W. for the first time. Carolyn Phelan

A Book About Being Sick That Children Will Like - a review of "Arthur's Chicken Pox"

My take on this book results from my observations of my four and six year olds (boy and girl). I think it would be popular with children precisely for the same reason that books on loose teeth are popular: children in this age range are tremendously curious about their bodies.
My daughter went frantic for a while inquiring about loose teeth. She inspected the mouth of anyone who had missing teeth or who had wobbly ones. She asked what happened to them that they got loose, and what happened to them after they fell out....
In the same way, I see her looking at this book about chicken pox. She (and to a lesser extent, her brother) are curious about the spots, what they mean, etc. Also, I think it is just dawning on children this age that they can get very ill, and I believe it is comforting to them see that they will be cared for.
[One mom commented that she was concerned about how much loving care was lavished on Arthur and D.W. But I think it is reassuring to children.]
Four Stars. Okay Read-aloud that is interesting to children.

One of the best Arthur books

My 4-year old son loves to go to the library because he can't wait to see which Arthur books will be available. We've read almost all of them, and this is our favorite. (Arthur's Halloween is a close second.) I'm buying buying a copy from Amazon.com as a gift to his nursery school class.

one of my favorite books as a child!

i was read this book and i read [ later on] many times when i was little,as I was an avid arthur fan! this was probably my favrotie and when i was 5 and got the chicken pox it was very comforting to know what would happen etc. i am just disappointed my children will not have to full opportunity to understand this book and the disease it talks about becuase of the legally required vacine and much smaller number of cases
maybe even by the time i have children this will be like small pox or polio and virtually wiped out
