Fifty Cents and a Dream: Young Booker T. Washington, by Jabari Asim

Booker dreamed
of making friends with words,
setting free the secrets
that lived in books.

Born into slavery, young Booker T. Washington could only dream of learning to read and write. After emancipation, Booker began a five-hundred-mile journey, mostly on foot, to Hampton Institute, taking his first of many steps towards a college degree. When he arrived, he had just fifty cents in his pocket and a dream about to come true. The young slave who once waited outside of the schoolhouse would one day become a legendary educator of freedmen.

Award-winning artist Bryan Collier captures the hardship and the spirit of one of the most inspiring figures in American history, bringing to life Booker T. Washington's journey to learn, to read, and to realize a dream.

From Booklist
Booker T. Washington is often attacked for compromising with, rather than attacking, the political establishment, but in this handsome picture-book biography, the focus is on an amazing achievement in his youth, when he walked 500 miles from his West Virginia home “without a single penny in his pocket” to make it to school. Asim tells the story in spare free verse, beginning with Washington as a slave boy whose dream was to learn to read. Even when freedom comes, life is brutally hard: “he shoveled, hauled and packed,” working in a salt furnace and a coal mine. Collier’s dramatic, unframed illustrations in watercolor and collage include the unforgettable image of the young Washington staring through a window at white kids in the classroom. Then there is Washington’s journey; tired, hungry, and alone, he was always struggling to get to school. The climax is a close-up portrait of the adult Washington seated in a classroom with books, dreaming of sharing what his teachers have given him. Extensive back matter includes additional facts, a chronology, and a discussion about his enduring legacy. Grades 2-4. --Hazel Rochman

Courage, Dreams. Hard Work!
By O.Snow
This is an amazing book. A boy, born into slavery, was eager to read, write and study. He walked 500 miles to Hampton-Institute. With his hard work, he graduated with honors. He was the first African American to receive an honorary degree from Harvard university. His autography "Up from Slavery" became a best seller. His 59 years of life were a full of courage, dreams and challenges. He used the time God gave him wisely. I was amazed by Booker T. Washington. I recommend this book to everyone.

Beautiful and Inspiring Book!
By Sarah
I expected this book to be great, given that it was illustrated by Bryan Collier, but even so it far exceeded my initial expectations! The text is beautifully written and inspiring. The illustrations were created using a watercolor collage technique. They are incredibly detailed and include so much symbolism that extends the story being told by the text. I know that my fourth grade students will enjoy hearing about the life of Booker T. Washington and learning about his incredible journey.

BEAUTIFUL BOOK TELLING A BEAUTIFUL AND INSPIRATIONAL STORY OF A GREAT MAN
By D. Blankenship
Years and years ago, back in the early 1950s I read a short article in a small publication provided to public schools - "The Weekly Reader." This small article spoke of Booker T. Washington and his accomplishments. I remember quite distinctly that the article jumped from the pages of this reader because seldom, if ever, did this publication contain articles or stories about black people. It was simply how things were at that time, unfortunately. This fascinated me.

As chance would have it out small school had a large set of books (They all had blue covers) which covered the early lives of famous people; famous men and women and how they lived as children. This also was odd because our little school did not have all that many books. I eventually read each and every one of them, multiple times. One of those books covered the early life of this exceptional man. I read it...I was hooked. Talk about an inspiration.

The book being reviewed here is at a much lower reading level that the original biography I read but that is a good thing as our children need to start learning of our history at a much younger age than in the past. This work fits in very nicely and I must say that like my book of old, it is truly inspirational.

Booker T. Washington was born into slavery. Right from the beginning the ability to read and write; the learning process of doing so, became a driving force in his life; a force which would last a life time. Booker T. made a journey of over 500 miles, heading north, to seek an education. When he reached his destination he had fifty cents in his pock. Be was a black man in a world that was not overly friendly to people of his skin color.

Despite the hardships and road blocks Mr. Washington prevailed and became, in the end, one of the leading educators in this country. This is remarkable and this book tells his story well.

This is an amazing story by Jabari Asim and has been beautifully illustrated by Bryan Collier. This is a beautifully designed book and is filled to overflow with information. The writing is direct and quite readable and goes perfectly with the illustrations.

This work belongs in every school and public library.
