Nagaru Tanigawa is a Japanese author best known for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for which he won the grand prize at the eighth annual Sneaker Awards. Tanigawa is currently working on the tenth novel about Haruhi Suzumiya and the S.O.S. Brigade.

Parody Manga of the Haruhi Suzumiya Series

To fully enjoy the comic "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan" (created by Puyo), you have to know some things about Suzumiya Haruhi (and SOS Brigade), the heroine of Nagaru Tanigawa's popular light novels and the animation series. To the uninitiated, the spin-off gag manga (serialized in "Monthly Shonen Ace" since 2007) is just a strange mixture of four-panel (yonkoma) and short comics filled with silly jokes and antics. To them some of them are funny, but they are often incomprehensible. Who is Haruhi and what is SOS Brigade? Or a celestial and closed space for that matter? What is the point of Mukuru doing cosplay? Or pint-size Asakura-san ... no, Achakura-san?
Of course, fans of the series get the point. "Haruhi-chan" (meaning literally "Little Haruhi") is a parody of the original hit novels/animations/comics/film, which center on the beautiful and eccentric high school girl Haruhi. She has "no interest in ordinary humans" and wants really something extraordinary in her life like aliens, time travelers or espers, so she forms a club SOS Brigade. What Haruhi doesn't know is that the members of the club actually include an alien, a time traveler and an esper, too.
Like "The Neon Genesis Evangelion" series, the original "Haruhi" has spawned spin-offs including "Haruhi-chan." One of the most popular ways of making a new series is to create smaller ("mini" or "chibi") characters based on the original's counterparts. Hence, Haruhi-chan."
So you may ask, "Can we enjoy the manga as a stand-alone comic? It depends. Most references to the original source material (and some cultural references) will fly over your head, but you may still find some of the characters funny and even cute. Keep reading the series (so far five volumes published in Japan), and when you come to know the characters and their personalities, you will enjoy the comic more. (Creator Puyo gets better in jokes and artwork as the series goes on). I hope Yen Press will keep on publishing the book.
Translation is very good, capturing the wacky sense of humor found in the original Japanese, which often sounds (intentionally) silly and nonsense. Those who have seen the original anime will be hugely entertained by the drastic changes some characters have undergone, for example, quiet "maid" Mori-san's entrance and her memorable quates: "I am a sky diver who happened to be passing by." Enjoy it.

Very funny, must-buy for Haruhi fans

After getting into the anime adaptation of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, I went to amazon and bought the first three light novels in good faith that I would like them. I'm so glad I did, as I really love them. I bought the fourth of course, and 5 is already pre-ordered.
Of course, I have to talk about Haruhi-chan. I had in fact seen the anime version, and enjoyed it thoroughly. So when I saw that yen press was handling the translation (they did Yotsuba& and Azumanga Daioh, two of my favorites), I decided to go ahead and buy it. The manga is a four-panel gag comic, filled with jokes only the insiders of the series will understand, which are actually quite funny. In fact, in the first volume alone includes references to events through the first three novels.
Interestingly enough, though it may just be because I haven't seen the anime in a while, I can't remember many jokes that weren't in volume 1 alone. So I'm excited to see what's to come in the next volumes of the SOS brigade's misadventures. Actually, I liked it enough to pre-order volume 2!

Haruhi-Chan Yonkoma

I'm a huge fan of the Haruhi anime and light novels, but I steered clear of the manga after perusing a few issues.
I was very interested in the Haruhi-Chan anime and the manga peeked my interest. As a major follower and collector of Japanese four panel comics (yonkoma) that inspired anime work such as Lucky Star, Hidamari Sketch, Azumanga Daioh, GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class, et cetera... I was very excited to find that Haruhi-Chan followed this pattern. I chuckled through the whole novel and cannot wait for #2. It does help if you're a fan of the light novels/manga and anime to understand or 'get' the inside jokes, et cetera, but the whole project is right up my alley.
