Hobbie uses transparent watercolor, pen and ink, and gouache on watercolor paper to good effect, with plenty of white space. Readers see the story from the perspective of a fox, Papa (sans nightcap), an enterprising toddler, and the pet cat, and a view from overhead. The illustrations will carry with a fairly large audience, but up-close inspection offers even more enjoyment, such as the matching astonishment on the faces of father and child, Santa's grandfatherly twinkle, even what looks like amusement on the faces of the reindeer. Beautiful - So Glad They Are ReIssuing This Gorgeous Book

Beautiful.
I mean, most of us probably know Clement Moore's poem about the man in red. And most of us probably already have one or two favorite versions. But this one is different and I'm so glad that Little, Brown Books is doing a reprinting of it.
I happen to very fond of Tom Browning's rosy cheeked Santa. And Robert Sabuda's brilliant pop-up book has long been a favorite with our whole family. But now, we have this new book to share, and I have to say that I love the artwork. It's wintery and in dark shades. And I find it very soothing. The children and father very cute.
Definitely glad to add this to my Christmas shelf.

Charming!

Such beautiful, nostalgic illustrations. I picked up the book at a local store and was immediately enchanted, standing there to read the whole book and look at all the soft, warm images.
One interesting note--in listing the reindeer, the text says "Donder" instead of "Donner." I quickly researched and found out that in an earlier text, two of the reindeer were "Donder" and "Blixem." The spellings have undergone various transformations over the years. Neat!

Exactly as expected

We purchased this with the hope of starting a Christmas tradition of regular reading in the run up to the holiday. It was exactly what we were hoping for: beautiful, whimsical, and modern illustrations; text spacing such that the book is neither too long nor too short; and a nice hardcover volume that isn't too big for the kids to hold onto themselves.
