Including Heat-Moon's reflections on writing these pieces, HERE, THERE, ELSEWHERE is much more than the usual collection of amber; it is a coupled summation of craft and memory. A perfect treasury of prose and provocation for readers old and new, Heat-Moon's most recent work reveals his absolute mastery across pages many and few.

From Booklist
It’s collected-works time for the renowned author of such outstanding travel literature as Blue Highways (1983) and River-Horse (1999). Thirty magazine pieces comprise this assembly, with some articles ranging abroad, such as the author’s depictions of his ventures to New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, and Britain. Most, however, amble around America or radiate from the author’s home states of Missouri and Kansas. Several articles further extol what watchfulness can reveal about the Sunflower State, or about anywhere else one goes. An example of attentiveness rewarded is Heat-Moon’s evocation of history’s layers between his home and the mile distant to the Missouri River: a farm returning to forest, mounds and glyphs of vanished woodland Indians, a rails-to-trails dispute, and Lewis and Clark. Similarly, a sedulous search for Lake Superior’s piscine bounty, remembered from childhood highway trips as his father’s navigator, takes Heat-Moon through the geology and fish shacks of northeastern Minnesota. Alaska, Oregon, the Mississippi River, and Long Island additionally frame the author’s peregrinations and kaleidoscopic visualization of a place’s landscape, people, and past. Expect a clamor for this compendium from Heat-Moon’s legion of readers. --Gilbert Taylor

Globe Trekker at Home!
By New Jersey Nation
Multiple points on the map with a focus on his home in Missouri and the USA. William Trogdon (his real name) has been a model for travel writers since the 1980's. Whether walking on the Katy Trail or driving networks of country lanes down the Channel coast of the West Country of England, Trogdon's narrative flows easily and fully describes his experiences. These were originally a variety of past published magazine articles. I'll bet, though, you haven't read most of them. Three hundred ninety pages and most definitely a quick but eventful read. If you liked Blue Highways and PrairyErth, you'll want to read this book.

Blue Highways or The Blues
By Dearel J. Friend
I first discovered William Least Heat Moon by way of listening to him do a Larry King interview back in the 80's. He was promoting his book "Blue Highways" about his geographic and personal trek across the blue highways of America (reference to the blue lines designating secondary highways on travel maps). I bought his book and found myself mesmerized by the many talks he had with ordinary Americans along the way. What drew me so intensely into the story was Moon's ability to interweave his own personal torments (separation from his wife), his personal evaluations of that relationship, and his own personal discoveries about himself.
It would be the inspiration from Blue Highways that led me to buy a little mini-RV and set off to see America myself many years later when retirement from the military afforded me that luxury. I have since criss crossed our country many times, taken notes and banked memories of where I went and who I met along the way and am enriched forever in doing so.

Alas, it may be true that we all have "one book" in us...so far I've found that to be true with William Least Heat Moon. I have read each of his succeeding books and found them to be mundane and uninspired, too much drowning in scientific or social wanderings, to be readable. In the last one, "Road to Quoz" his writing was so badly done that I threw a $25.00 hardback into the trash can, so badly did I wish to escape it.

Perhaps some writers are at their best when they are most miserable; Moon was courting a sense of failure with his then wife, was lonely, a bit heart sick, was enriched by his need for introspection during the writing of Blue Highways..and those personal dynamics went far in that first wonderful memoir and travelogue. Prairie Earth and Road to Quoz was so bad I could not believe these words were coming from the same writer.

And so...since this is a collection of writings, spanning a wide time frame, you will, as many reviewers have noted, find some pearls...and some clunkers... I still re-read "Blue Highways" once in a blue moon...and climb into that old Ford panel van, with the bad water pump, sit in the passenger seat and bask in some prose poetry. I get to have a front row seat as Moon encounters fishermen and waitresses and native american college students and southerners still living as if it were 1930...and they are good company indeed. Perhaps you'll read this new book first...and then, for redemption, read "Blue Highways" and all will be forgiven.

Some unknown Least Heat-Moon
By Gene Bowker
I've been a fan of his since I first read Blue Highways years ago. Over the years, I've read most of his other books.

This is a compilation of stories which first appeared in Newspapers or Magazines over the last about 20+ years. Heat-Moon however has gone back into the stories and redone them to remove changes made by editors and to also add some "prologue" information to each story.

I think my favorite from the first half is his recounting his travels in 1961 to Faulkner's Hometown of Oxford, Mississippi where he hoped to meet the author at home. His travels around there were quite enjoyable and I found myself listening to the chapter again. (I'm listening to the audible version)
