Third Graders Learn About Cheating

Arthur's friend Francine is the best hitter on the school softball team.
At the start of third grade, Arthur and Francine are in Mr. Ratburn's class. Mr. Ratburn has the reputation of being the strictest teacher in third grade. A new student named Muffy joins the class. She becomes friends with Francine, but does not have the good habits of studying and preparing for her work. However, she seems to be the class pet, and gets away with excuses for work not done.
On the day of a big math test, Muffy copies Francine's answers. They both come before Mr. Ratburn, but Muffy says Francine cheated, and Francine is punished.
The book explains in its gentle, veiled way, how some children can cheat and lie, and others can be blamed. It is an unfair situation, and the liar and cheater does not ultimately get the punishment she should. Unfortunately, that's the way things work sometimes at school.
My objection to the book is that Francine too quietly accepts her role as the victim of injustice, even though she did nothing wrong. This is the wrong message. Children should speak up when they see something wrong, instead of "taking the punishment" for a "friend." They should know that friends do not put each other in situations like this---that this does not represent true friendship. We never understand why Muffy would do this, and at the end it seems that Muffy's transgressions are forgotten.
