Brothers...!
By Kathy Ramos
So the brother's drama heats up, and well its all cool and all that, but I really want them to get to the meat of it all. I want Bi-wal to know exactly why Ryung cared so much for Se-In...and well that is not really covered in this volume, but the drama is high and the comedy still finds it's way in, which is good. All in all, its a series that does not disappoint.

I enjoy many aspects of it
By Bunny
These last four volumes really turned me away from the series. I was not expecting it to end so....well, differently. I enjoy many aspects of it, but really, trying to mesh all the reader's opinions and thoughts in it, kind of killed the momentum. I feel like the story took a nose dive after volume 9 and became a different series altogether.

The Admirals: Nimitz, Halsey, Leahy, and King--The Five-Star Admirals Who Won the War at Sea, by Walter R. Borneman

How history's only five-star admirals triumphed in World War II and made the United States the world's dominant sea power.

Only four men in American history have been promoted to the five-star rank of Admiral of the Fleet: William Leahy, Ernest King, Chester Nimitz, and William Halsey. These four men were the best and the brightest the navy produced, and together they led the U.S. navy to victory in World War II, establishing the United States as the world's greatest fleet.

In THE ADMIRALS, award-winning historian Walter R. Borneman tells their story in full detail for the first time. Drawing upon journals, ship logs, and other primary sources, he brings an incredible historical moment to life, showing us how the four admirals revolutionized naval warfare forever with submarines and aircraft carriers, and how these men-who were both friends and rivals-worked together to ensure that the Axis fleets lay destroyed on the ocean floor at the end of World War II.

Review
"In his superbly reported new book, historian Walter R. Borneman tackles the essential question of military leadership: What makes some men, but not others, able to motivate a fighting force into battle?"―Tony Perry, Los Angeles Times

"The first book to deal with the four [admirals] together, focusing on their intertwined lives, friendships, and rivalries....A very well-crafted book."―John Lehman, Washington Post

"Engagingly written and deeply researched... Mr. Borneman makes it easy to understand the complex series of maneuvers and counter-maneuvers at Leyte Gulf...which is not always the case with accounts of the battle."―Andrew Roberts, Wall Street Journal

"A riveting introduction to the only four men in American history to have been promoted to the five-star rank of Admiral of the Fleet in recognition of their extraordinary feats"―The History Channel

"Borneman demonstrates comprehensive command of published and unpublished sources, fingertip understanding of the period, and a polished writing style in this unique collective biography of the four men who 'with a combination of nimble counsel, exasperating ego, studied patience, and street-fighter tactics' shaped the modern U.S. Navy to win WWII at sea."―Publishers Weekly

"Borneman deftly manipulates multiple narrative strands and a wealth of detail. He vividly fleshes out the numerous vain, ambitious men vying for power at the top and examines their important decisions and lasting ramifications. An accomplished, readable history lesson."―Kirkus Reviews

"Walter Borneman's The Admirals is an epic group portrait of Nimitz, Halsey, Leahey, and King. Not since the heyday of Samuel Eliot Morison has a historian painted such a fine portrait of the five-star admirals who helped America beat Japan during the Second World War. Highly recommended!"―Douglas Brinkley, Professor of History at Rice University and author of The Wilderness Warrior

"They were completely different in temperament and personality, but the U.S. Navy's four five-star admirals in World War II shared a sense of vision, devotion, and courage. Walter Borneman has written a rousing tale of victory at sea."―Evan Thomas, author of The War Lovers

"This is Walter Borneman at his best. The portrait of the forgotten admiral, Leahy, is worth the whole book. But there's scarcely a page where a reader won't learn something unexpected, and occasionally shocking."―Thomas Fleming, author of Time and Tide

"Walter Borneman's decision to tell the gripping story of America's war at sea through the prism of the relations between her four greatest admirals is inspired. The four very different temperaments and personalities of these giants of the US Navy, their rivalries, interactions and comradeship, make for a compelling tale...There's more about true leadership in these pages than will be found in a library of lesser books."―Andrew Roberts, author of The Storm of War

About the Author
Walter Borneman is the author of seven works of nonfiction, including 1812, The French and Indian War, and Polk. He holds both a master's degree in history and a law degree. He lives in Colorado.

Good Insights Into the US Navy Leaders of World War II
By Paul
My first reaction to this book was not to read it because I felt it would be too disjointed to tell the life stories of four men who became five star admirals, but having recently completed Pacific Crucible: War at Sea in the Pacific, 1941-1942 my interest was up for it, and the result was not disappointing.

When we think of the navy's role in the Pacific, we immediately think of Nimitz and Halsey, and they are covered in this work, but we are also enlightened to the roles of Ernest J. King and William D. Leahy, whose exposure to the eye of the public was not as prominent as the first two, but were indeed, on a higher level and worthy of even more accolades for their accomplishments.

All four were born in the 19th century, and were graduates of Annapolis around the turn of the twentieth century. They were coming into the navy at the time of America's emergence as a world power and the navy itself being transformed as a result of the efforts of Theodore Roosevelt and the realization of global spheres of influence that now included the Pacific and the recognition of the emergence of Japan.

It is somewhat ironic that the photograph on the dust jacket of the book is one of battleships in formation. Many would not likely believe that the battleship would quickly become almost obsolete with the development of the carrier. These men of this volume were born into the age of the battleship. Indeed, it was the days of the early 20th century that saw an arms race between Britain and Germany in the technology developments of battleships (dreadnoughts)that embraced both weaponry and sheer size, once described as castles of steel. Castles of Steel: Britain, Germany, and the Winning of the Great War at Sea For many years, the might and power to deliver massive charges defined the purpose of any navy.

But prior to their important roles as naval leaders during the war, these men all experienced an important evolution in naval warfare that most importantly included the development of the submarine and the aircraft carrier.
Nimitz was heavily involved in submarines, Halsey in destroyers, especially for torpedoes, and King in carriers. Leahy, the oldest, clung to the battleship.

On Dec. 7, 1941 America was attacked by Japanese carrier based planes at Pearl Harbor. The navy was not only defeated, but also humiliated at such severe losses with so little retribution, but author Borneman so correctly points out that when Chester Nimitz arrived in Hawaii to take over on Christmas Day 1941, he immediately began to gather informatiion and draw conclusions that the Japanese had won a tactical vicotory but wasted a sttategic one.
The greatest miss by the Japanese were the oil tanks. There were 4.5 million barrels of fuel oil left for the use of the navy. The carriers were not at Pearl and were untouched. The submarine base was largely untouched, and the dry docks and maintenance facilities were still operational. Even some of the ships that were sunk would be raised for later action.

As mentioned earlier, Halsey and Nimitz were more in the spotlight, but for me, the most interesting of the four admirals portrayed here is Ernest J. King. While the navy at that time was a fickle place, and sometimes unpredictable, King, through brilliant maneuvering in his career eventually went to the top of the top. I suppose that every nation in a time of war needs a real son of a bitch at a high level of command, and America had King.
He was arrogant, brilliant, demanding, tempermental, and nearly impossible to work with or for, but he was the man needed at the time for this nation.

As for Leahy, he became almost an appendage to Franklin Roosevelt. His story for me, was not as interesting but he was vital for FDR, especially as Roosevelt aged and needed someone to depend on.

Finally, let me say a few words about the greatest gas bag with stars that America ever created, and that would be Douglas MacArthur. Borneman points out, as does history, that MacArthur had about seven or eight hours notice after the attack on Pearl and allowed his planes to be caught on the ground and destroyed by the Japanese. We know the story of his flight from Corregidor to Australia, and FDR bestowing the Medal of Honor on this second rate general and first rate con man, but I am happy to say that Admiral King saw this publicity hound for what he was. I think that one of the finest things that Harry Truman did was firing him.

You will enjoy the book, and it will present to you a better background of the naval leaders who won the war in the Pacific and destroyed the tyranny of Japan.

Admirable
By Christian Schlect
I wanted to read a book about the Navy's top leadership in World War II, and this history by Walter R. Borneman proved ideal. It should be sold out at the bookstore of the U.S. Naval Academy.

Actually this book covers more than World War II, and gives one a description of the U.S. Navy's ups and downs from the turn of the 19th century through to the defeat of Japan in 1945. While 1940s activity in the Atlantic is not ignored, this is a book primarily about the Pacific and the top command's strategy for winning the war in that theatre. It also traces the rise of air and submarine power, over that of the big battleships. All this through the lives and careers of the four navy men who reached five-star rank by war's end.

Mr. Borenman boosts Admiral Leahy; questions Admiral Halsey; admires Admiral Spruance (who didn't get the coveted fifth star); and gives a conventional negative picture (from a Navy standpoint) of General Douglas MacArthur. Like many good books, this one will drive you to read more about the period and personalities.

(As a person who does not know a boat from a ship, I will leave it to expert reviewers on all things naval to say if all the technical knowledge put forth by Mr. Borneman is accurate. It seems so to me.)

A highly readable and insightful biography/military history
By troutguy
Walter Borneman has produced a thoroughly engaging blend of naval history and biography in this account of the lives of America's four five-star admirals. Merging the biographies of Admirals Halsey, Nimitz, King and Leahy, Borneman paints a colorful panorama of United States naval history from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. The chapters detailing the emergence of submarine and airpower in the Navy and how the lives of these men intertwined with these technologies are particularly intriguing.

Although Borneman gives a fine overview of the military conflicts during the lives of these men, in the end, the book revolves around the admirals themselves. With a refined ability to develop character, Borneman helps us know the hard-drinking Ernest King, the statesman-like William Leahy, the grandfatherly Chester Nimitz, and the full-steam-ahead William Halsey in depth. Their unique personalities shaped their careers, and to some degree, the world-changing events of the Second World War. Great "supporting character" roles in the persons of Franklin Roosevelt and Douglas MacArthur add additional color and depth to the story. The book should appeal both to those with little military history background as well as those well-versed in WWII history, especially the Pacific Theatre. This work is a fine tribute to these men, who, despite their personality differences, all understood and exemplified the meaning of duty, service and honor.

The Stranger: Barack Obama in the White House, by Chuck Todd

Chuck Todd's gripping, fly-on-the-wall account of Barack Obama's tumultuous struggle to succeed in Washington.

Barack Obama won the presidency in 2008 partly because he was a Washington outsider. But if he'd come to the White House thinking he could change the political culture, he soon discovered just how difficult it was to swim against an upstream of insiders, partisans, and old guard networks allied to undermine his agenda---including members of his own party. He would pass some of the most significant legislation in American history, but his own weaknesses torpedoed some of his greatest hopes.

In THE STRANGER, Chuck Todd draws upon his unprecedented inner-circle sources to create a gripping account of Obama's White House tenure, from the early days of drift and helplessness to a final stand against the GOP in which an Obama, at last liberated from his political future, finally triumphs.

Review
"Richly sourced and deeply informed....There aren't many Washington journalists with the access, reporting skills, and authorial dexterity to write a comprehensive history of a presidential administration while it's still racking up miles on Air Force One. Todd delivers a surprising depth of insider reporting considering how few insiders have spoken publickly about this administration."―Scott Porch, Chicago Tribune

"Todd is the rare Washington commentator whose on-air musings are consistently backed by authoritative reporting....He knows his subject, and he knows how to write....Readers of The Stranger unquestionably benefit from Mr. Todd's Beltway-insider status."―Robert Draper, Wall Street Journal

"Revealing....Mr. Todd has grounded his arguments in hundreds of interviews with Washington sources and his intimate knowledge of how that city works or (more often, these days) fails to work."―Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"Todd, the newly minted Meet the Press host and former NBC chief White House correspondent, provides an even-handed, concise, and thorough account of President Obama's first six years in the Oval Office."―Publishers Weekly

"A compelling, behind-the-scenes account of President Obama's first six years in office."―HuffPost Live

A repetitive disappointment without any worthwhile insights
By Jonathan Robbins
I was really disappointed in this book. Chuck Todd is such a gifted journalist and writer I expected to really learn deep insights into Obama (after all the book clocks in at over 500 pages). Unfortunately, I know almost nothing more about Obama than I did before I started the book. Instead of being a deep dive into Obama, good and bad, what this book provides is essentially a very surface level summary of the news events and legislative battles of the Obama era thus far. But it doesn't really provide any insight into the events of the Obama administration, either - anyone who read the papers over the past seven years would have a deeper understanding of the contents of this book. There's no news here, no insights of note, and no revelations about Obama. The book was repetitive, lacked structure and should have been much shorter. It pains me to say this, but don't bother reading this book.

Expected More From Todd
By Richard
Was hoping to understand so much about the first African American POTUS. Get some insight in to how PO handles the gut felt hatred of the Republicans. How he differs from other presidents in the handling of consensus and negotiations. Didn't get anything of the nature from Todd. Instead read a guy playing it safe by trying to be fair and balanced by sitting on the fence. Too often Todd came to the wrong conclusion in the attemp.

Major Disappointment
By R. Schmidt
I was really looking forward to reading this. But this tome is nothing more than a rehash of all the stuff that we have been reading for years. The reader would expect to get new information or at least a different perspective on this administration.

I would strongly recommend you do NOT waste your time and money. I expected more from this author. I think Todd was offered a huge amount of money to write this DUD and he could not bring himself to refuse.

Not JUST like the movie version
By Jennifer Donovan
Just the fact that this book exists makes me happy. The bedtime story theme is so sweet in the movie, and having this as a tie-in is a lot of fun.

There is NOT a little brush that comes out of the book, like in the movie, but it's still a lot of fun. The little kitties are finger puppets like in the movie.

And even though it's supposed to be the epitome of an awful bedtime story, in truth, kids often like the simple stories that we adults find to be drivel, and I was surprised to agree that it makes a fairly good bedtime story that my son enjoyed.

Book doesnt have the brush
By Leslie
I just accidentally reviewed deadpool instead of this book so that'll be a weird review for that movie, I'm only 28 and have suddenly forgotten how to Internet. Anyways this book doesn't have the brush so 4/5. I also didn't realize the cardboard inside the finger puppets is intended to be removed so I broke the cardboard at first and got mad. This is a book for my son's 2nd bday, I think he'll like it but I really bought it for myself.

Beautiful Darkness (Beautiful Creatures), by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—This engrossing must-have sequel to Beautiful Creatures (Little, Brown, 2009) immediately returns to Gatlin, SC, and the seemingly impossible relationship between Caster girl Lena Duchannes, as yet un-Claimed for Light or Dark, and Ethan Wate, her beloved Mortal. Grieving the recent loss of Uncle Macon and worried that her 17th Moon and family curse will destroy everyone else she loves, Lena pulls away from Ethan and runs off to the Great Barrier with Siren cousin Ridley and mysterious John Breed. But is she headed for nirvana or danger? Plagued by strange visions and accompanied by his loyal friend Link and Keeper-in-Training Liv, Ethan travels the Caster Tunnels running beneath the world determined to save Lena. Along the way he faces shocking revelations about his family and gets help from several unexpected sources—developments that will further enamor readers. Familiar and favorite characters behave just as remembered, and sometimes even better. New additions, especially clever Liv, enhance the series and its plot, which is a cycle of hope, despair, and possibility. Like her Book of Moons, it gives and takes with equal measure in a great storytelling balance. Mortal and Castor settings aboveground and below reinforce the novel's Southern and gothic tone. Past and present are navigated successfully, offering new information while creating more questions. With allusions to a bigger game afoot and a classic good vs. evil climax that leaves several loose ends (unique, dangerous, and entertaining), this volume will leave readers clamoring for the next installment.—Danielle Serra, Cliffside Park Public Library, NJ

An excellent sequel
By The Compulsive Reader
Lena and Ethan have lived through the day that they had been dreading for months, Lena's sixteenth birthday, but not without some sacrifices. With Macon's death, Lena is depressed and lost, and there doesn't seem to be anything that Ethan can do to help her, despite his own experiences with grief. Then Lena begins pulling away and taking risks, and Ethan, still not aware of what really happened to him the night of Lena's birthday, can't understand why. So he digs deeper into Caster lore and his mother's research to look for a way to save Lena and what they have before it's too late. But once you've entered the Caster world, you can never go back, and some secrets Ethan uncovers will put him and everyone he loves in far more danger than he can imagine.

Beautiful Darkness is a very detailed and layered sequel that won't disappoint fans of Beautiful Creatures. Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's world is vivid and rich, with an old south backdrop, lore, and traditions--the setting is really what sets their work apart from the endless options in the paranormal genre. Though it picks up where Beautiful Creatures leaves off, the book covers a good amount of time as Lena and Ethan struggle with conflicting feelings about the night of Lena's birthday, the consequences, and the grief each are experiencing. Ethan's voice is especially strong in this installment, as he has to stand on his own and discovers a whole new world right beneath his own nose. Garcia and Stohl also introduce a few new characters that add new tension between the main characters and open the way to new, surprising secrets about Caster powers and the battle of Light vs. Dark. All the twists, secrets, and surprises culminate in a journey through the Caster tunnels and a suspenseful showdown between family members that will leave some dead, and some very much alive. There might be some confusion as to who is left standing at the end, but one thing is for certain: this story is not over, and readers still have another deliciously thick and dark gothic book to look forward to.

Great Sequel
By A Book Obsession..
After not being claimed for darkness like she feared, you would expect Lena to be happy to be able to stay with Ethan. However her guilt from her Uncle's death is threatening to consume her and causes Lena to pull further and further away from Ethan. When Ethan starts having mysterious visions again, this time without Lena, he knows she is in trouble, but he just isn't sure what the danger really is. When Lena really starts to take a turn for the worst, Ethan may just be the only person who can save her from herself, but what happens when she doesn't want to be saved?

The teen love angst was majorly stepped up in this book. It really surprises me to say this, but I actually think the angst added to the story. Usually this is something that will turn me off of a series, but it was handled perfectly in this book. Everything between Ethan and Lena is thoroughly strained, ripped, torn apart. It's almost as if all of their differences grew together and formed an impenetrable wall between the two of them. However, while the issues between them made for a terribly nail biting read, if they can overcome those obstacles, they will only come out the other side that much stronger. I really enjoy these two together and I hope their relationship will stand the test of time despite the road blocks along the way.

A lot of questions get answered in this book. Many of those answers are ones you will never see coming. Things are really starting to come all together and the events in the past have woven a very intricate web to lead into the present. It's amazing to see how everything has led up to the current events, and its hard to believe there is still plenty we do not know. This book really has just the right amount of revelations to really keep the pace going, but it leaves plenty of mystery as well. This is a really fine line to follow, and can be one of my biggest pet peeves in a book. Too little information and the book is very frustrating, but too many revelations can become boring as there is no mystery left. I am very impressed with the way this series is progressing and handling the "information and mystery" issues.

If you thought the stakes were high in the first book, this one steps it up that much further. Be prepared to sit on the edge of your seat the entire book. I couldn't read it any faster! This book will definitely grip you every bit as hard as the first one. After the revelations in this book, I cannot imagine the direction the next book will have to take. If you enjoyed the first book, this one surely will not disappoint. If you are anything like me, as soon as you finish this book, you will be counting down until the next one.

Half a book
By Andre
This review does not contain spoilers. I dearly loved Beautiful Creatures. I knew it's often hard to write a follow-up story, especially for new authors, but I was heartened by the positive reviews, and I got the book. But Beautiful Darkness unfortunately is nothing like the first book. In the appendix, the authors thank their editor, however I think she more than anyone failed them, along with perhaps the project director. The first half of the book is pretty good, and the darkness of the story is relatively well developed, but the second half can only be described as dreadful, and in the end profoundly disappointing. Every single rookie writer mistake, so delightfully absent from the first book, is present in the second half. The story line is convoluted, and plot devices abound everywhere, almost comically. The quick, insightful humour and characterization becomes ham-fisted, full of lengthy repetitive descriptions. The overall story devolves into something that reminded me of a comic book, and I'm not talking about a good graphic novel. Even the ending never ends, continuing for seemingly forever. As I read, and then forced myself to reread the book, I found myself wondering which age bracket the authors were trying to aim for. Certainly they have successfully lowered the target age for their audience with this installment. But more than that, I think that the editor should have sent the manuscript back for a rewrite of the second half. Yes, the deadline would have likely been missed, and perhaps everyone is counting on Warner Bros' movie money already, but I can't imagine that this book will help the overall project long term. From the other reviews, maybe I'm wrong and everyone else has no problem with lousy writing and a descent into comic book-like storytelling, but I think it's a real shame, given how great Beautiful Creatures was. I think this book is exactly what happens when new authors have to write a second novel, the inspiration is not quite there anymore, and their editor is not behind them to ensure that their product is as strong as possible. Ultimately it ends up hurting everyone. I can only hope that they will redeem themselves with the third installment, although I am no longer sure about this whole project.

Beautiful!! A MUST READ!!!
By Bree22Bree
The subject matter of the first chapter makes you queasy. But the story is one of hope, set against a dark reality.
I love the way Seabold, jumps around in the timeline, it makes the gruesome reality bearable enough to continue. She weaves in the reality of the living with this girl's existence in heaven, like fabric. I also love how she magnifies life through the eyes of the dead, You see life, and death, love and grief is such clarity that's its almost painful as you realize the depth and beauty of the human condition and what we are capable of. As well as where life can and will take you. It flows well. It's beautiful and mesmerizing.

Zoo, by James Patterson, Michael Ledwidge

Once in a lifetime, a writer puts it all together. This is James Patterson's best book ever.

Total

For 36 years, James Patterson has written unputdownable, pulse-racing novels. Now, he has written a book that surpasses all of them. ZOO is the thriller he was born to write.

World

All over the world, brutal attacks are crippling entire cities. Jackson Oz, a young biologist, watches the escalating events with an increasing sense of dread. When he witnesses a coordinated lion ambush in Africa, the enormity of the violence to come becomes terrifyingly clear.

Destruction

With the help of ecologist Chloe Tousignant, Oz races to warn world leaders before it's too late. The attacks are growing in ferocity, cunning, and planning, and soon there will be no place left for humans to hide. With wildly inventive imagination and white-knuckle suspense that rivals Stephen King at his very best, James Patterson's ZOO is an epic, non-stop thrill-ride from "One of the best of the best." Worst book I've read in years
By Howard V. Tayler
"Zoo" is full of point-of-view errors, sloppy dialog, one-dimensional main characters, tell-don't-show, and artificially-induced pacing. There are a few neat action sequences, and the premise is fascinating, but the science is horrible, and the moral posturing is infuriating. Ecologists and "green" folks everywhere should bury all the remaindered copies of this book, because the best use it can serve for our ecology is as a carbon sink.

SPOILER ALERT: human-induced ecological collapse is a neat premise. The accidental generation of a pheromone that makes animals hate people is a bit of a stretch. The way in which these premises and plot-whoppers are worked into the story, however, is stupefyingly clumsy to the point of being insulting.

The publisher says "Zoo is the thriller he was born to write." That's a little bit like saying "this cardboard box is the mansion he was born to build," or "this steaming pile of excrement is the meal he was born to eat." My only consolation for having my intelligence insulted by Patterson is that Patterson's publisher has inadvertently insulted him with the glowing praise.

Another book not written by James Patterson
By shell24
It appears that like Clive Cussler, James Patterson is franchising his name. Getting other people to write your books, that's as old as Dickens.
The problem is that a different voice appears in every book. Haven't heard the masters voice in years. Pity.
This book is sadly not what the real James Patterson would have written all those years ago.

Just not good at all
By redrose
I was really excited about this book coming out. It sounded so interesting from the description. The first part of the book had so much potential and then it took a completely annoying turn for the second half of the book. It was confusing and not at all believable. I found myself feeling angry that I got tricked into buying another go green book. Very disappointing.
