I love everything about it but one thing. But that one thing's a doozy.

I went into this seriously hoping that this book would redeem the godawful cliffhanger in the last one, because up to that point I'd really enjoyed the series. And I don't mean godawful in the sense of I hate cliffhangers, I mean godawful as in who has their primary love interest go off on their wife like that and expect them to remain sympathetic? Especially when the reason for her apparent infidelity is so painfully obvious that it's obvious to everyone with half a brain?

Nope. It didn't. It's quite literally one of the worst mishandled bungle of a relationship I have ever seen. First Maccon spends the first quarter of the book being hit with the stupid stick in order to be a drunken jackass to everyone around him while his pregnant wife is in danger. Obviously, this was necessary for the plot to advance to get Alexia into Italy, but there had to be a better way of doing that than making your heroine's romance interest into an unmitigated asshat. By the time he disappeared from most of the book, I was glad enough to see him gone. Then...well, I won't go into details because it would be spoilery. Suffice to say that I would have thrown the book across the room at the reconciliation scene if I hadn't been reading it on my iPad. It may, in fact, be the least satisfactory reconciliation scene ever. Honestly, I half read it as an abusive relationship at this point. Certainly, I'd have a hard time believing that Maccon holds Alexia in any great regard after this. He may love her in his own way and he certainly desires her, but I don't believe he has any respect for her at all.

I enjoyed the rest of this, and I'm sure everyone who enjoyed the first two would as well. It had the same sparkle that the first one had, with Alexia's very distinct voice and thoroughly enjoyable steampunk adventures. I greatly enjoyed the side character's stories, and loved Professor Lyall's bigger role, and Akeldama's dilemma, Madame Lefoux's adventures and inventions, and even Ivy showing that she has some wit underneath all those hats. The Templar storyline was fun, and had a lot of promise for future books, and I really enjoyed the steampunk technology crossed with vampires and werewolves and preternatural. I'd love to find out more about Alexia's father after this, in particular.

But, barring a friend whose opinion I trust telling me that she's not bungling any relationships in future books in this series, I probably won't be reading any more. It's a shame, since I do enjoy them, and enjoyed this one when Maccon wasn't onscreen. But I just hate to watch characters butchered like that, no matter how witty and charming the rest of the book is.

Jeff Sharlet Hits Another Home Run

With The Family, Jeff Sharlet offered readers an inside peek into an organization that on the surface may appear to consist of "nice Christians" who host the annual National Prayer Breakfast (NPB) and DC based prayer groups. However, their version of Christian capitalism led by a muscular Jesus bears scant resemblance to the teachings of Christ as presented in the Gospels. In C Street Jeff continues his fearless reporting by expounding upon this group's global efforts, thus debunking the notion that progressives can find 'common ground' with an organization such as the Family that run roughshod over the first amendment? (One can hear the voice of Roger Williams trying to remind us of the importance of the separation of church and state.) Despite string of sex scandals and other deeds that have shut down countless other ministries, politicians and other global leaders still flock to the Family sponsored National Prayer Breakfast for their coveted photo op with the President. Perhaps this book may make them think twice about accepting their invite to the 2011 NPB.

On a side note, as Jeff has obtained unprecedented access to the Family's archival material that's stored at the Billy Graham Center (Wheaton College), I am suspect of any reporting of The Family/The Fellowship/C Street that doesn't reference Jeff's research. Good reporting requires that one go beyond simply taking the words of those who have a vested interest in the Family.

Jeff Sharlet Defends American Democracy

Jeff Sharlet is on the side of true religion, freedom and democracy. In this follow up to "The Family" Sharlet follows the story of American religious extremism in high places to the next level. What is so great about this book is not just Sharlet's investigative reporting but his mastery of writing. This is actually a great book in every sense of the word, a pleasure to read. Unless more Americans become aware of the insane intentions of so many of our leaders who hide behind the cross to "reclaim" the world "for God" the USA will be headed for our own version of a theocracy. If I could think of a better way to say this I would, but all I can say is please read this book!

Stretching out a Good Idea

As someone who has been pretty diligent about reading Jeff Sharlet's work over the years, I was a little disappointed in this follow-up to "The Family." In it's defense, it is a follow-up and not the main course. Sharlet spends a considerable amount of time restating his previously published research, making this feel like a compilation of greatest hits instead of a new contribution. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and he acknowledges that some chapters are indeed revisited versions of old magazine articles... but the downside of this is that the content loses its luster (at least for those who keep abreast of the subject matter) as well as its value (for those of us who paid for it). To its credit, the writing is excellent and the thoughtfulness with which Sharlet approaches his work is often inspired. The section on Uganda greatly expands the reader's understanding of that country's anti-homosexual politics beyond the confines of conventional reporting.

The greatest strength of this book, unlike perhaps that of "The Family," is in the cogency of it's assessment of evangelical power. Sharlet repeatedly makes the case that the Christian Right in America is primarily a political force, bending it's theology to fit the aspirational demands of it's self-appointed ruling class. Even though Sharlet himself shies away from theological argument, it cannot, alas, be excised from this ruthless story about the acquisition of power.

This story of a bank robber who captured a nation's sympathy in post-Communist Hungary is a rollicking tale told with glee and flair. Attila Ambrus sneaked over the border from Romania into Hungary in the waning days of Communist rule. After talking his way onto a Hungarian hockey team, he turned to robbery to make some cash in the Wild West atmosphere of the early 1990s in Eastern Europe. As journalist Rubinstein shows, Ambrus was quite good at it. Taking advantage of poor police work, he took in millions in Hungarian currency and became a headline-grabber. He managed to stay at large for several years while continuing in his role as a back-up goalie on the ice. Rubinstein has a knack for telling a good story, and he captures well both Ambrus's appeal and the atmosphere of the first few years of capitalism in Hungary. Along the way, he introduces readers to memorable characters in addition to the appealing, alcoholic protagonist: the women Ambrus attracts and a Budapest detective driven out of office by the crime spree. Hungarians loved Attila Ambrus; from Rubinstein’s appealing biography, it’s easy to see why. Rubinstein tells the story of this goalie-gone-bad with style and wit. He also maintains a historian’s impartiality, however, supported by a wealth of meticulous research. One reviewer complained that Rubinstein glossed over the misery of life in 1990s Hungary, but this was his only criticism of an engaging and informative tale. Readers of Ballad of the Whiskey Robber may not fall in love with Attila Ambrus as the Hungarians did, but his story will surely entertain them.

It was in October 1988 that 21-year-old Transylvanian Attila Ambrus found himself on the streets of Budapest with nothing but a glint of cleverness, which quickly landed him a position as third-string goalie for Hungary's best hockey team. However, failing to supplement his nonpaying job with janitorial work, or sales of Parker pens and illegal pelts, Ambrus began a series of 29 armed robberies that lasted seven years and captured the imagination of ordinary Hungarians. The robberies were distinguished by their outrageous success, of course, but also by Ambrus' "fortification" of choice (hence the moniker Whiskey Robber). Rubenstein offers a well-detailed narrative of Ambrus' robbery spree and the efforts of earnest but underfinanced policeman Lajos Varju to catch him. Readers may agree with the author's implication that Ambrus' journey was quixotic, or they may look at these desperate acts and the sad conditions in Hungary that spawned them and say it was all just a crime. Miracle of Nonfiction Reporting Turned into Novel Suspense

Julian Rubensten the author says in an interview he couldn't believe no other writers were jumping on this true story of a Hungarian hockey player "supplementing" his income by robbing banks in the early 1990s. Most reviewers have already summarized the plot. If I can only add some things: This is more than a page-turning comedy full of colorful criminals and real-life Keystone Cops. This is a tragedy about a man who, dismissed by his father and ridiculed by his teammates as a homeless peasant, wanted to be loved, to be accepted and to be a somebody and who used his talents, cunning, and imagination to become a grotesque criminal. Atilla, the main character, is so endearing, which attests to Rubenstein's great writing skills.

Lovers of comic novels such as Confederacy of Dunces, The Gingerman or any of the farcical novels of Thomas Berger and Magnus Mills should love Ballad of a Whiskey Robber.

The story of Attila Ambrus is unbelievably fascinating. The history of Hungary is bitterly nice, full of historical surprises. To forge the two in one story seems to be a very difficult mission. To do it in a way that is entertaining and teaching in the same time is art. And to do all these by not being Hungarian? That I would say is impossible.

Julian Rubinstein proved to be a great artist who managed to do all what seemed impossible.

His interpretation is simply perfect. I am saying this as a Hungarian who lived in Hungary when the series of robberies happened and who knows how corrupt the country is (was?), which is probably an unavoidable consequence of transition from planned economy to a market economy.

When I first heard from this book, I was particularly curious to find out what a non-Hungarian would think about the stupendous story of the `whiskey robber' but I ordered the book with an immense feeling of discredit. I would have never expected that someone without the cultural background would ever understand those strange Hungarians :-)

Having read the book, I have to admit now that Julian Rubinstein was indeed able to do it so well that sometimes I had the feeling that the book was actually written by an English-speaking Hungarian. I think I could never give a compliment bigger and more honest than this.

I recommend the book to those that want to know more about what it felt like to be a Hungarian after the transition, to those who are curious to know the story of Attila, to those who love exciting criminal stories and great humour.

And if you're Hungarian? Then this book is a must for you! :)

Cops and Robbers of the Absurd

Hungary's most beloved criminal, Attila Ambrus, is locked away until 2016, but even now he is interviewed on television, as a commentator on current bank robberies since he was an expert, and even the dog he had when he was free (and who will probably never see him again) makes the news now and then. Attila won't say what his immediate plans are; he says he'd "be insincere" if he made remarks about planning to escape, but he is working on getting an education, and he loves reading. He has a huge encyclopedia of Hungarian history that even mentions him as a national folk hero. This is despite his alcoholism, addiction to gambling, womanizing, and career as the worst goalie ever in professional Hungarian hockey. The bizarre story is rollickingly told in _Ballad of the Whiskey Robber: A True Story of Bank Heists, Ice Hockey, Transylvanian Pelt Smuggling, Moonlighting Detectives, and Broken Hearts_ (Little, Brown) by Julian Rubinstein. This hugely entertaining story would fail if it were fiction; Rubinstein has done lots of research, including hours of jailhouse interviews with the hero, and it is all true, but still incredible.

Attila escaped from Romania to Hungary in 1988, clinging to the bottom of a train. He wound up in Budapest penniless and friendless, and he had a funny accent. With unswerving determination, he caught on to a championship Budapest hockey club. Once he did get a chance to show his stuff on the ice, "... it didn't take long for the team to recognize the new kid's level of talent. Zero...." He didn't get paid, but he doubled as the team's janitor. He also drove the Zamboni, until while driving drunk one night, he drove it into the stands. Desperate for some better life, and for a better place to live than the stable he had found, he got drunk, put on a wig and some mascara, and knocked off a post office. It was easy. He went on to accomplish almost thirty drunken robberies over six years, always unfailingly polite to the tellers, even bringing them roses. Capture, of course, was sooner or later inevitable, as long as Attila kept playing the robbery game, and he was eventually arrested in 1999 and put into the escape-proof downtown jail. He became a television start; in interviews, he was poised, amused, and amusing, and Whiskey Robber television specials, biographies, and t-shirts all sold well. (Some of the t-shirts toted up his score of banks: "Whiskey Robber 28, Corrupt Cops 1".) His case became, as Rubinstein writes, a referendum on the government.

It only became more so when Attila broke from prison (by means of an escape rope made of shredded sheets and shoe laces) and started robbing again, increasing the power of his legend. People refused to turn him in. Even _Sports Illustrated_ got into the act, erroneously celebrating him as "one of the best goalies in his country's top pro league." Of course he got caught again, and has stayed in prison so far. Robbing banks is surely wrong, as is boozing at Attila's level, as is losing all gains to roulette, and Rubinstein never makes the mistake of idealizing the hero of his book, no matter what degree the Hungarians have. He is a troubled and unhappy man, and a talented and ingratiating one, who was puzzled and delighted by his own fame as he made headlines in the crime pages as well as the sports pages. Attila ought to be overjoyed by this hilarious, larger-than-life book portrait, but Rubinstein has also drawn a picture of a society that was battered by communism only to be let down by the capitalist bosses who took over. The hilarious tale is thus a sad one, too, for all its absurdity; hero criminals are only needed by the downtrodden.

Small boy learns to read by helping Santa with his book.

This is one of the books that I hope will become a Christmas classic. It combines the excitement of Christmas with the love of books and reading. The pictures by Mr. McPhail are an enticing addition to the story. If you love books and reading you'll love Edward, Santa and the last page of this book.

No Tests. Patience.

Edward cannot read. He almost can...but not quite. His teacher tells his parents that there are many tests he can take that will find what the problems are. However, his mother insists on "No tests...just patience."
It is Christmas Eve and Edward struggles to read his favorite Christmas story when he hears a noise. He runs downstairs to find a large, old book. "It must be Santa's!" he thought.
Santa comes back for the book, which happens to be his "Book of Names," but looses his glasses, and needs Edward to go along with him to help him read the names. Edward struggles at first, but Santa helps him. In the end, Edward does fine reading and Santa returns him home, thanks him, and rewards him with a new book.
On Christmas day, Edward reads his new book to his two happy parents.
I believe that this story is really inspiring. Edward gains self esteem, self confidence, and he saves Christmas! This book seems to be an instant classic. The story is good and the illustrations are beautiful. People of all ages will enjoy reading about Edward's memorable Christmas.

Santa's Book of Names

I cried as I read this book for the first time - it is an endearing story about Edward, who is having difficulty learning to read. His teacher suggests he undergo more "tests", but his parents insist "no...more patience". When Santa delivers gifts to Edward's house on Christmas Eve, it happens that he can't read his book of names of boys and girls. Christmas is at stake and Edward must step up to the plate and read the names for Santa. Edward goes with Santa in his sleigh and saves the day by reading aloud the names in Santa's book. He gains his self-esteem and self-confidence in reading, and saves Christmas too!
This is one of the best Christmas books I have read and I ... hope it becomes a classic. This author has written two other books about Edward, just as charming: "Edward and the Pirates" and "Edward in the Jungle".

Very witty, but not a great novel

I've been a huge fan of the gofugyourself site for about 4 years now- I love Heather and Jessica's fashion commentary. It's always sharp, witty, and just biting enough to not be too bitchy. They're great at it, and I bought Spoiled because of my adoration of their fug work.

Spoiled was not, however, as great as I had hoped it would be. The book has a stack of brilliant one-liners, and very amusing asides that poke fun at how silly/shallow some of the characters are, but writing like that is not enough to sustain a novel. The dialogue is not great, mainly because it is not believable, and I don't mean that in a 'suspension of disbelief' way. It is also delivered way too fast, without appropriate context. For example, when Laurel is telling Molly about who her father is (sorry, trying to avoid getting deleted for spoilers!), the dialogue is almost akin to a throw-away line. This leaves what is actually a big deal in Molly's life falling kind of flat for the reader. Plus, repeatedly throughout the book there is a dearth of really good scene-setting. It's not something that requires paragraphs of descriptions, just a clever snappy line or two can provide more than enough for the reader to envisage what is going on. It's almost like they were trying to get to the next funny comment/line too fast to enable the reader to actually engage with the characters.

Spoiled left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. Sure, I laughed, but a novel needs to do more than that. I can just read their website if I want a few laughs. A novel's purpose is the story it's trying to tell. A novel should deliver its story in a way that makes you feel like you were along for the ride, no matter how light-hearted the subject matter is.

High hopes for a book that ultimately fell flat

I have been a big fan of the GFY site for a long time, and had high hopes for this novel. Sadly, I was disappointed. Falling into a trap that snares many bloggers and comedians turned novelist, the book has plenty of funny one liners but lacks the plot and character depth to sustain a full novel. The plot is completely predictable from start to finish, and none of the characters - main or supporting - grow in any way. Brick begins as a self-involved horrible father who seems to think good parenting involves doing things with your children on half-hearted whims, and ends the book in the same place. Molly begins as the perfect do-gooder with all the sympathy points, and does not change one bit. Brooke begins as a self-absorbed spoiled brat who has decided that her sister happens to be her enemy, and ends as a self-absorbed spoiled brat who has decided that her sister should be counted among her inner circle. There are also a plethora of unresolved plot lines. We never get any real closure on why certain characters hate one another, what happened with Brooke's mother, or what happens with the potential relationships and crushes that spring up throughout the book.

The lack of depth of plot or characters leaves the book feeling flat. It's hard to feel anything more than mild amusement at any of the characters, or to become attached to them or care about their stories. If a giant volcano had erupted in the middle of the book and killed off half the characters, it would have been hard to feel anything other than "meh."

The Fug Girls do hilarious re-caps poking fun at the holes in plots of made for TV or ABC Family movies on their site, but unfortunately the plot has a lot of the flaws that the girls are so great at identifying in the works of others: non-believable characters that are so outrageous that they become boring, unrealistic plot lines, cookie cutter scenes, and unresolved arcs. I love GFY and really wanted to love this, but unfortunately it was just not a great book.

Super Fun Summer Read

I found "Spoiled" to be an incredibly fun, frothy, funny read and a perfect summer book. The authors strike a great balance between the humor all of the Hollywood and fashion jokes and the relationships between the characters. I liked all of the characters and was invested in what happened while I laughed out loud as they skewered the celebrity lifestyle with the same wit that is found in their writing on Go Fug Yourself. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an amusing and enjoyable read!

Baseball becomes a metaphor for life in Deuker's thought-provoking testimonial to friendship and filial love. Narrator Seth, who lost his father at age seven, becomes a baseball fanatic five years later, when he starts playing ball with Jimmy Winter and Jimmy's perfectionist father. But Mr. Winter is hardly perfect: an alcoholic, he abruptly moves out and stops seeing Jimmy, then months later shows up, drunk, at a ballgame. Jimmy subsequently moves away, but Seth has been so strongly influenced that he's even eligible for the honors program in high school. Seth joins junior varsity baseball and is thrilled when Jimmy moves back and also makes the team. They start attending weekly beer-drinking parties at the home of teammate Todd. To his despair, Seth gets left in J.V. while Jimmy and Todd become varsity stars, even though they're suspended once for drinking. Eventually Seth makes the varsity squad and, along with Todd, quits drinking. But even with athletic stardom beckoning, Jimmy doesn't sober up, and the consequences are tragic. Grade 6-10-- On the day Seth Barham met Jimmy Winter, his life changed. Seth had been an unfocused, confused pre-teen who had never come to terms with his father's death when he was seven. He meets Jimmy in a park as Jimmy's overbearing father is putting his son through intense baseball drills. As their friendship develops, Jimmy's intensity and self-assurance on the playing field spills over into Seth's life, helping him to blossom as a student and a baseball player. However, Jimmy's home life begins to unravel when his parents divorce. Also, he is suspended from the team when he develops a drinking problem. Seth withstands peer pressure to drink, and, with his mother's support, begins to accept his father's death. However, his biggest battle comes when he must cope with Jimmy's death in an auto accident. Baseball action permeates the story, increasing the novel's interest to those readers familiar with the sport but setting up possible barriers for the uninitiated. Seth's simply told, often moving first-person narrative is meant to be his way of accepting the two losses in his life. However, although the semi-therapeutic story covers three years in the boys' baseball lives, it largely ignores their school lives and some readers may wonder what else they did. From the author of On the Devil's Court (1989), another story in which sports and life intertwine. Jimmy Winter, his eyes fixed on the major leagues, accepts his father's harsh coaching as the only way to develop that special edge. Develop it he does, though their personal relationship founders on the rocks of his father's alcoholism. Jimmy fires up new friend Seth with the love of baseball, and the two play through Little League, Babe Ruth League and into high school. Seth is competent but not gifted, though he discovers that the benefits of hard work and concentration on the field carry over to school. His admiration for Jimmy's potential becomes mixed with more complex feelings when he learns that his friend is drinking and cutting class. After that revelation, the story moves with heavy inevitability: the varsity team puts together a championship season, but Jimmy kills himself in a car accident just before the clincher. Covering well worked thematic territory, Deuker offers readers few surprises in this outing, but the baseball action is believable and the contrasts between several sets of characters are thoughtfully explored. A great story about friendship, baseball, and growing up.

HEART OF A CHAMPION tells a story about two very different boys, and what brings them together. Seth's father recently died, and he's feeling lost. He meets Jimmy Winter and so the story begins. Seth and Jimmy learn about life while they learn about baseball. They celebrate their victories and their failures on the field and in life. This book deals with important issues such as death, divorce, alcoholism and peer pressure. Deuker's dialogue is realistic, and you can hear the crack of the bat in his baseball descriptions. The plot moves along quickly, and keeps interest levels high. This is a good book even for someone who really doesn't read much for pleasure. I highly recommend it.

Inspiring story about baseball and growing up

Heart of a Champion is an inspiring story by Carl Deuker. This book, which is based on a true story, is extremely well written and has very realistic characters. This book follows two boy's adolesence as they live and die around their favorite sport, baseball. The characters are brought together from two different backgrounds, through their love of the game. As they enter high school they mature as adults and overcome personal challenges that come their way. This book apppeals to any baseball fan or someone who is interested in a realistic story about friendship and life.
The main characters, Jimmy and Seth, go through the typical changes of an average teenager. This aspect of the book allows adolescents to relate to some of the problems that they also face. Jimmy's character is one of the most complex characters that I have ever read about. Readers will be suprised at Jimmy's mindset and his personality changes throughout the story. The other main character, Seth plays the role of the more responsible and mature friend who must keep Jimmy grounded.
This story takes place in California in the 90s. When Jimmy and Seth are 8 they meet each other on the playground. They decide to play catch and this starts a long lasting friendship. Every Saturday for 5 years they meet each other on the playground to play catch and hit flyballs. When the two part their ways on the playground and start high school, they find out they are going to the same school. They join the high school baseball team and go through 3 seasons of high caliber championship baseball. But in their senior year, Seth starts to see his best friend spin out of control.
This is an excellent book and I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in a good, pageturner.

A reader's first impression of Heart of a Champion is a tale of courage and how
friends, help friends get to through things. It is a great book to read specially if you enjoy realistic fiction and sports stories.
The main plot of the book is about a boy named Seth who lives with his mom because his dad died of cancer and they moved into a new town. Seth has trouble making friends because he is quit and humble. Then one day why he is at the park a boy named Jimmy and his dad ask Seth if he would like to play baseball with them and Seth decides to give it a try. Seth is not very good at baseball but he really likes it so he keeps on playing and getting better. Seth and Jimmy get to be real close friends and do all kinds of stuff together. They grow up together and eventually reach high school. They both try out for the team but Seth makes the Junior Varsity team but Jimmy makes the Varsity team and becomes popular at school. Jimmy starts to make poor decisions and Seth knows that he will get in trouble if he hangs out with Jimmy.
Jimmy is the wild and outgoing type, Jimmy likes to party and does not concentrate on his school work that good. Seth is the quiet type and he likes to work on his school work more. He is also an honor student and has really good grades. Seth isn't that popular, but Jimmy is popular and hangs out with the cool group.
As you know Seth and Jimmy are the main characters. Seth is more motivated on his school work and baseball. Jimmy is more motivated to baseball and wants to be a pro baseball player. I wonder how much he wants to play baseball because he makes a lot of mistakes that could hurt him in the long run.
The Heart of a Champion is a real good book that teaches you about courage, persistence, and good friendship. I really enjoyed the book and I thought that there were no boring spots in the book. The author keeps you wondering what's going to happen next after every chapter.
