A huge step forward
By Justin Landon
Brent Weeks has a blurb on Terry Brooks' UK edition of Dark Legacy of Shannara: Bloodfire Quest. I'm sure that's a surreal moment for Weeks who was aided by a blurb from Brooks on his debut novel, Way of Shadows:

`I was mesmerized from start to finish. Unforgettable characters, a plot that kept me guessing, non-stop action and the kind of in-depth storytelling that makes me admire a writer's work' -- Terry Brooks on The Way of Shadows

On the back of that blurb and a brilliant marketing strategy from Orbit, Weeks' first trilogy was a huge hit (I'm sure it had something to do with it being good too). Since then, Weeks has been considered a rising star in the genre, further cemented by The Black Prism debuting at #23 on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Despite Weeks' commercial success, I wasn't quite ready to coronate him one of the heirs apparent to the epic fantasists of the 1980's and 90's. I felt that, while a tremendous creator, he hadn't yet come into his own as a storyteller. After finishing The Blinding Knife, his follow-up to Black Prism and the second installment in the Lightbringer series, I don't hesitate to grant him that status. His newest novel is a tremendous achievement and a logical next step for him as a writer.

In the Lightbringer series, Weeks breathes life into a world that takes its cultural roots from the Mediterranean. Ruled by an alliance of the Seven Satrapies (one for each color) and bound together by the belief in a god of light, it's a government not dissimilar from the Holy Roman Empire. Like the Emperor and the Pope, the Satrapies are ostensibly ruled by the Prism and the White, a color drafter of unequaled power and a religious head of state, respectively. Weeks folds decades of history and context into this setting, a task that made Black Prism an occasionally cumbersome novel, including laying out color drafting, a magic system that converts light into matter.

Nevertheless, Black Prism excelled. Beautifully drawn characters, particularly Kip, a fat adolescent thrust into events far outstripping his capability, carried the novel. Weeks twisted expectations with the typical hero archetypes failing more often than succeeding, and both sides of the conflict seemingly equally justified in their conviction.

In that way, Blinding Knife is much the same as its predecessor. It picks up where Black Prism ended, telling the story of Gavin, Kip, Liv, and Karris, as well as a few new characters. Where Black Prism was a story about shortcomings -- Gavin's fear, Kip's insecurity, Liv's efficacy, and Karris' anger -- the new novel is about overcoming them. Additionally, politics become more prevalent as Gavin maneuvers in his nascent war against the color wights. Weeks is often at his best in these scenes, finding ways to generate passion from his reader even when the action ebbs.

Recognizable throughout Weeks' work, is his use of short chapters, 115 in Blinding Knife. Despite their diminutive length, each chapter bristles with intent and never a word seems wasted. Freed from first novel world building, he uses these short bursts to layer narrative tension, releasing it and building it again, each time becoming more intense before finally bursting in a last two hundred pages that feels almost tantric in its never ending climax.

The length of it risks the impact of those finals pages as my tolerance for denouement was equivalent to my tolerance for beer after four years at UC Santa Barbara. That isn't to say I wanted any less, but I fear Weeks packed so much in that I became inured to the sense of wonder he so carefully cultivated. Still, I would happily have read another two hundred pages without batting an eye.

There were a few narrative hiccups that didn't work for me. Occasional first person asides, in particular, whose purpose became clearer as the novel concluded, but never coalesced as I'd hoped they would. I suspect on a second, and more careful reading, they'd be more illustrative. Either way, they did little to dampen my enjoyment of this otherwise pitch perfect novel.

Two books in now I feel comfortable asserting that the Lightbringer series is about nothing less than taking the measure of a man (or woman). What makes him good? It is his intent or only his action? Does duty come before all or is there a moral certitude that must take precedence? And ultimately, is there a price too high to do what's right? It's riveting thematically, but more important it's indistinguishable from the story itself, blending and supporting it at every turn. I find it a testament to Weeks' talent that he succeeds in it so well.

I've read all five of Brent Weeks' published novels and it's a certainty that he's evolving with every book. With The Blinding Knife, I believe he's entered a new stratosphere and one that puts him on par with anyone who's written these kinds of stories. It isn't only the best book he's written; I consider it one of the best epic fantasies I've read.

Do me a favor and read it too.

Much better then i could have hoped.

Its now 6:50 am. I've been reading since 11 pm. I sadly have to put the book down to go to work, otherwise I'd still be reading. Yes, I stayed up all night reading. And yes, it was completely worth it. About 3/4 of the book read so far (i read really fast) and have not been disappointed yet. Can't wait for work to be over to finish reading. I'd recommend anyone who wants to start reading this book to start early on a morning where you dont have anything planned. You'll be busy for a while

The Blinding Knife (Lightbringer Series, Book 2)
By Samantha Helle Sebens
I had a really hard time deciding whether to give this book four or five stars. In comparison to many other books I have read, this is a five star book. I loved it, I love most of the characters, I love the world, I love so much about it. But I didn't like it quite as much as I liked The Black Prism or The Night Angel trilogy so I'm giving it four stars in comparison to his other work. Still, I think everyone should immediately run out and purchase this book if they haven't already.

First, if you haven't read the first book, I don't want to spoil the ending of it for you, so please stop reading this review now. The Blinding Knife starts with Gavin Guile reconciling himself to the loss of his blue drafting ability. He also is worrying about the fate of all the Garriston refugees and trying to figure out what to do with Kip. He decides to have Kip join the Blackguard while he helps the refugees set up a new settlement. Kip goes back to the Chromeria and starts his training. I really enjoyed this whole part of the book. I liked seeing Kip handle situations on his own, without Gavin's help, and I liked seeing him learn about himself while he learns how to fight and use his drafting abilities. This book really advances Kip and it is exciting to get glimpses of how awesome Kip will be in the future books.

Not that Kip isn't awesome in this book because he really was. I loved the scenes between Kip and Andross Guile because he has every reason to be terrified of him but he holds his ground amazingly well. And anytime Kip calls himself a "turtle-bear" I chortled happily to myself, excited to see him surprise people with his ability to take and give damage. Kip is a great character who keeps getting better. I look forward to all of his chapters and I was always impatient with other characters because I wanted to read more about him.

Now, for the reasons that I didn't think this book was quite as strong as the first one. I think this book suffers a very tiny bit from second book syndrome. It isn't introducing us to the world anymore and it has to set up the two final books by still holding a lot back. There are some really excellent plot advancements and I in no way mean to imply that this book doesn't have a lot of excitement and development. But it ties up most of the mysteries the first book left us hanging with (we finally get to see Kip's real Thresher testing rod and have confirmation on how many colors he can draft) and there aren't a lot of loose threads open at the end of this book. There are some surprises at the end, and many characters are left in precarious situations but I didn't have the same feeling of desperation because I needed to know what was going to happen next that I got after finishing the first book. I also really don't like Liv. It isn't even that her actions in joining the Color Prince aren't reasonable. I understand her frustration with the Chromeria. But half the time she is using superviolet to look at things dispassionately and the other half she is making really sketchy choices. I hope she makes better choices in future books so that I can get back to respecting her. The final reason that I thought the first book was slightly better is really nitpicky. There were a couple times in this book that Brent Weeks mentioned something that happens and it clashes a little bit with what we were told in the first book. An example is early in the book when Kip is reflecting on infiltrating the Color Prince's camp. He says he went to spy on the Color Prince and save Liv (page 26). But he went to save Karris. Just a couple little discrepancies like that kinda bothered me.

Regardless of these tiny complaints there is a lot that I loved in this book. I really liked a lot of the new characters that are introduced and can't wait to learn more about them. I loved the character development of our old friends as Kip experiments with his new power and Gavin loses some of his. There are several of the good plot twists that I have come to expect from Brent Weeks. I also really liked the Nine Kings card game and how it is a secret source of knowledge wrapped up in a game. I will definitely be preordering book three (which, I read in an interview with Brent Weeks, is going to be called The Blood Mirror for anyone that is interested) as soon as possible and awaiting it eagerly. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Joss is the seventh son of the Supreme Overlord of the Universe. His older brothers help his dad rule the cosmos, but all Joss gets to do is deliver pies. That's right: pies. Of course, these pies actually hold the secrets of the universe between their buttery crusts, but they're still pies.
Joss is happy to let his older brothers shine. He has plenty to keep his hands full: attempting to improve his bowling score; listening to his best friend, Kal, try (and fail) to play the drums; and exploring his ever-changing home, The Realms. But when Earth suddenly disappears, Joss is tasked with the seemingly impossible job of bringing it back. With the help of Annika, an outspoken girl from Earth, he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime...and learns that the universe is an even stranger place than he'd imagined.
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Candymakers comes a world-hopping tale that leads the reader deep into the heart of the mysteries of time and space. Plus, there's pie.

Gr 5-8-Joss is bored with his simple job of delivering pies for the Supreme Overlord of the Universe (his dad). Soon, however, something goes badly wrong, and it is Joss's responsibility to rebuild Earth. Entertaining, unexpected, and irreverent, and yet packed with information about elemental physics and the contents of the universe.α(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Joss, seventh son of the Supreme Overlord of the Universe, delivers pies that “hold the universe together,” but compared to his brothers’ tasks, his job is menial. Living in The Realms, located inside dark matter, Joss is nearly immortal and complains that nothing ever happens. Then one day an Earth girl, Annika, spies The Realms through a telescope, and suddenly she is in The Realms. Joss’ best friend Kal and Kal’s parents are trapped in an unstable universe, and the Earth has been removed from the space-time continuum. Only Joss can fix things by rebuilding the entire solar system. Considering the premise, there is surprisingly little action. Joss spends most of his narration explaining things to the reader, and the rest of his time explaining things to Annika or trying to communicate with Kal. Still, science enthusiasts may enjoy the speculation about alternate universes, dark matter, and quantum physics. Grades 5-8. --Suzanne Harold

Carl Sagan
By Hillary Sanford
I loved this book. I took astronomy in high school, it ended up being A LOT of math. I learned how to use ALL the button on my scientific calculator. Which is was so boring. Some days the teacher would pop in a video of Carl Sagan and we loved it. He made the cosmos beautiful! This book reminds me of those videos. I loved the imagination and wonder Wendy has added to her book.
I also love that she has finally written a book addresses her love and curiosity of universe. We saw a little smattering in Jeremy Fink, then some more in Every Soul a Star. In this book she finally takes us off planet Earth.
I am a fifth grade teacher and would love to use this book as a read aloud during our space unit. Add some imagination into the boring numbers of how far everything is away from Earth!

A Slightly Science-y, Space-Set School Story
By Jennifer Donovan
I love Wendy Mass' slightly quirky, humorous, heartfelt novels. When I started this novel, which focuses on Joss, the 7th son of the Supreme Overlord of the universe, I wondered if it was going to hit that note which I love so much.

Right off, we do see Joss' room for growth, as he feels unimportant in his family role, being the youngest, but seemingly entrusted with less than his brothers who help his father run the universe. All Joss does is deliver pies! When a girl with a telescope spies their planet, The Realms, this goes against the laws of nature, and so Earth is destroyed. It actually isn't destroyed, but it's as though it never existed. That means that Joss' best friend Kai is also destroyed, because his parents were on assignment there, and if they never existed, neither could he.

But Annika, the girl with the telescope, somehow gets sucked into a wormhole and ends up on The Realms. It is through her that we learn more about this planet and Joss' and his brothers' roles. Because she's a clueless earthling (as are we, the readers), the sci-fi aspect isn't too heavy. We get to see things on her level, and understanding comes little by little.

Suddenly, Joss isn't the least important brother, when he is tasked with the job of re-creating Earth. Annika is obviously the expert, so they have to work closely together, even though they can't decide whether to like each other or just be annoyed by the other's presence!

Each chapter starts off with an interesting quote from a scientist, which ties into the story, but will also quite possibly feed a youngster's love of space or science.

My 9-year-old son really liked this novel, and I was thinking it was okay, though not a favorite, until I got to the last 1/4. The ending was fantastic and elevated the whole story for me.

From Publishers Weekly
Arthur the Aardvark's little sister D.W. stars in the second book (the first was D.W. Flips) of her own series that features the likable, cheeky young heroine. This time D.W. stands in her sunglasses, robe and broad-brimmed sunhat, and adamantly announces, "I don't like the beach, and I don't like to get wet." She asks to leave the minute she arrives, she won't play and she's afraid of getting sunburned. It's Arthur who helps change D.W.'s mind about the beach by unexpectedly tossing her into very shallow water where "D.W. dipped, floated, flipped, flopped, squirted, splashed, and dunked." By the end of the day, D.W. pleads, "Let's come back tomorrow!" Brown's artwork is filled with humor that expands his simple, appealing story. Sunny endpapersfilled with popsicles, starfish and gogglesnicely complement this book, ideal for summer reading. Ages 3-7.

Families of rabbits and aardvarks bask in the sun or take shelter under colorful beach um brellas; children (except D. W.) build castles, swim, or play in the water. All the while, D. W. remains high and dryuntil the very end. The book is so expertly conceived that non-readers will be able to follow every moment of D. W.'s day, from unhappiness to de light. Youngsters will predict the end ing, but they'll still love seeing her about-face and relate to her fear of the unknown. D. W. and Arthur at the beachthey're sure to make a big splash with the preschool crowd as well as with beginning readers. Trev Jones, ``School Library Journal ''

Summertime Fun
By A Customer
This is a very nice book. In reading a story about D.W. and her family going to the beach and insisting that she does not like and does not want to get in the water, children learn an important lesson about trying new things. Once D.W. does give the water a try, she finds out she absolutely loves it. My favorite part of the book elaborates on what D.W. does in the water: She splashes, she dunks, she dives, she jumps, etc. The actual words in the story are much more lush and colorful, however. It's a book you can have a lot of fun reading aloud to and with children. It's also a nice introduction to talking with children not only about the beach, but also the importance of not being afraid of or too stubborn to try something new. A definite recommendation for young children learning to read.

From Publishers Weekly
If trying something new can delay or offset the effects of Alzheimer's, as former CNN medical correspondent and syndicated "EatSmart" columnist Carper (The Food Pharmacy) contends, then readers would do well to try many of the ideas she offers in this empowering compendium. Genetically disposed to Alzheimer's, Carper, now in her 70s, has compressed the latest research on this and other types of dementia into short sections, each with a bottom-line action plan. While some are basic to all-around good health (e.g., taking a multivitamin, not smoking, limiting alcohol), others might surprise: consuming apple juice and vinegar, meditating, and surfing the Internet. Although Carper admits she has not tried all of them, she recommends that readers experiment with those best suited to their situations. Even a few nutritional (a Mediterranean diet) and lifestyle (exercise, stress relief, sleep) changes, she states, can gain as much as a decade disease-free, and by supplementing with anti-Alzheimer's powerhouses like niacin, choline, folic acid, and alpha lipoic acid, readers can push mental decline even further into the future. Whether in their 20s or well into retirement, readers will likely feel motivated to do the impossible: beat the approaching epidemic of a disease commonly viewed as hopeless.

Very easy to read
By Paul Lappen
For anyone in middle-age or older, Alzheimer's Disease is a major concern. This book shows easy ways to delay its onset, perhaps for years.

If the recommendations in this book can be reduced to one sentence, it might be: Eat Right and Exercise Regularly. Eat lots of deep color berries, like black raspberries, cranberries, plums and strawberries; they are full of antioxidants. Apple juice can boost the brain's production of acetylcholine, just like the popular Alzheimer's drug Aricept. Large doses of caffeine, like several hundred mg per day, may help clean up your brain if you are showing signs of mental problems (people react differently to high doses of caffeine, so be aware of the side effects). If you have cholesterol problems, get it under control, now. Cinnamon gives a boost to malfunctioning insulin, allowing it to process sugar normally. Weak insulin can lead to diabetes, and can damage your brain cells. Did you know that coffee helps block cholesterol's bad effects on the brain, is anti-inflammatory and reduces the risk of depression, stroke and diabetes, which all promote dementia?

Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise. Fill up your brain with lots of interesting stuff, like education, marriage, language skills, etc. You can actually grow your brain with lots of physical, mental and social activities. If you can join a health club and work out regularly, do it. If going for a walk after dinner is more your speed, do it. Conscientious people are better able to cope with setbacks in life, and can better dodge chronic psychological distress, which boosts risks of dementia. If you are clinically depressed, get it treated, or you are more likely to develop Alzheimer's. Symptoms that look like Alzheimer's can easily be something else (and something easily treatable). Go to a geriatric neurologist and get the right diagnosis, now.

The best way to prevent Alzheimer's is to reduce your personal risk factors, sooner rather than later. No one is expected to do everything in this book. Pick a dozen or so things that you can do every day, and stick with them. Anything that reduces the possibility of getting Alzheimer's, even by a little bit, is automatically a good thing. This book is very easy to read, and it is excellent.

Put this one on your "must read" list

Book review by Richard L. Weaver II

You must buy this book!

I have reviewed over 250 books (many of my reviews are categorized under the name of my publishing company, And Then Some Publishing, LLC), but this one -- among them all so far -- is one that should be read by everyone.

If you believe the title, Carper's book is about Alzheimer's and age-related memory loss, but when you read the book you quickly realize it is a book about healthy living, having a healthy lifestyle, and following a regimen that will bring you strength, vitality, and wellness.

100 suggestions seems like a lot; however, when you get going (each suggestion only takes up two or three pages) in this small, 294-page book. She has over 200 references for the book, and she gives you the web site where you can go to check out her sources:

What I especially enjoy is finding a book that underscores and supports the lifestyle that I have already adopted. I found that many of the suggestions by Carper are things I am already doing. Most healthy readers will find the same thing; however, most healthy readers (like myself) will also be interested in obtaining just a little more, going for that extra edge (the extra mile), and not just getting their current lifestyle reinforced but finding something that pushes them a little harder, a little farther, too.

A couple of the suggestions I have highlighted include #24, "Build `Cognitive Reserve'--Fill up your brain with lots of fascinating stuff." That idea delighted me because of the book reviews and essays I write. I think loving school, too, helps anyone build a cognitive reserve right from the outset. Getting immersed in information, learning, knowledge, and experiences builds a useful lifelong benefit.

In addition to writing about the importance of higher education, Carper also upholds the value of reading and writing in her #56, "Learn to Love Language -- Linguistic skills build bigger, smarter, stronger brains" (p. 168).

There are so many of her ideas that are just smart and worthy of adoption. Whether you have heard much of this before, Carper offers the research to support her ideas. We all need reminders to live properly and to be concerned about good health.

Two parts of the book need highlighting. First, within each chapter Carper ends with "What to do?" where she translates what she has said in explaining the idea of the chapter into practical, down-to-earth, specific kinds of things readers can do to achieve the results they want. For example, in #80, "Get a Good Night's Sleep," she writes as the first sentence of "What to do?": "Don't think of sleep as an inconvenience but as a legitimate way to subdue some of the brain's most devastating enemies. Take naps. . . . (pp. 233-234).

Also, the second part of the book that needs highlighting, I thought her section at the back of the book, "Putting it all together: Your anti-Alzheimer's plan" was especially good for it underscored what everyone can begin doing right now -- or, in other words, what the absolute, bottom-line, essentials are that can be started immediately: 1) surprise your brain, 2) get physical activity, 3) eat the right stuff and take supplements, and 4) take care of yourself.

You must buy this book! (I'm encouraging my wife and my other family members to read it. It's that good!) We purchased copies of the book and gave it as a gift to each of our four adult children.

This is a great book!
By thea flaum
At last--there are some things we can actually do about Alzheimer's!

The author has done a thorough, careful survey of the latest and best scientific research about the causes and prevention of Alzheimer's, and what the findings imply for all of us.

In clear layman's terms, the book tells you what the top researchers have learned about how to prevent and delay the onset of Alzheimer's. And the suggestions for things you can do to prevent it are just as simple as the title promises.

This book is a ray of hope amidst all the Alzheimer's gloom. I'm sending it to everyone in my family.

We All Fall Down: Living with Addiction, by Nic Sheff

In his bestselling memoir Tweak, Sheff shared a heartbreakingly honest account of his days as a crystal meth addict. In this powerful follow-up, Sheff writes candidly about stints at in-patient rehab facilities, devastating relapses, and hard-won realizations about what it means to be a young person living with addiction.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Havent we read this before? In fact, yes. Sheffs first memoir of addiction, Tweak (2008), figures in this follow-upif only he could finish writing it, the publisher would give him the cash he needs to jump-start a better life, pay back IOUs, and, you know, score some booze and weed. Yes, the drugs are less scary this time (no needles), but the ride is just as terrifying, as the 23-year-old Sheff bounces from two detox centers into a dangerously abrupt relationship living with a girl in Charleston. Good intentions and bad decisions follow: Sheffs frustrations at a dead-end job lead him to virtually nonstop drinking and smoking, once more testing the patience of everyone he loves. Sheff intelligently portrays himself as the most delusional of unreliable narrators. Prone to rambling, wheedling, and sobbing, he resets his goals with each page and rationalizes the hell out of every impulsive action. Flaws abound herelike, theres not much of a plotbut Sheff is blessed with off-the-charts readability, and his sex- and profanity-laced first-person narration makes him lovable and hateable in equal measure. The book ends in wobbly stasis, with Sheff celebrating whatever he can: I have a pretty awesome dog. Lets hope, for his sake, theres not a volume 3. Grades 10-12. --Daniel Kraus

Review
"Nic Sheff captures the insidious, almost vampiric mind-set of an addict who shrinks from any form of light. This book has more in common with Kafka than any recovery memoir I've read."--Mary Karr, "New York Times "bestselling author of "Lit "and "The Liars' Club"

"Sheff's journey, like his writing, is raw and compelling, heartbreaking and witty. An honest and gracious reflection about the challenges of recovery."--Rachel Sontag, author of "House Rules: A Memoir"

Thank you for letting us into your life Nic
By Suzyq221
I read Tweak after reading Beautiful Boy, by Nic's father, twice. I am the mother of an addict. When I saw Nic had written another book, I instantly read the reviews and kindled it immediately, honestly not expecting to be as moved by it as I was by Tweak. That is not the case. Nic, thank you for writing this book, it was amazing.

It may sound odd to call a book about the tortures of someones life amazing, but, this book is. Nic lets us see every twisted, terrible downward spiral by being honest with how he feels and what he thinks, no matter how dirty it sounds. His braveness is unbelievable, letting us see the worst of him. Then, we also get a glimpse of the greatness in him and the hope that lies within. And that hope gives me hope, for him, for my son, for every addict out there.

Nic DOES NOT whine about 12 step programs nor does he bash them. He simply doesn't think they are his way. They may work for most, but perhaps not for him, or they are not the be all end all. He does participate in treatment that is not 12 step based, although he said he goes to a meeting once in a while. Since when does one thing make sense for ALL, every single person? That thinking is so off track. There is always a percentage of people that the common cure does not work for. All Nic is saying is that 12 step isn't for him, let's not crucify him for it. If he had cancer, maybe chemo would work for most, but maybe not for him, are we gonna fry him for that? I applaud how he figured out what he is comfortable with, and stayed true to himself. He doesn't say don't do treatment, he says find the treatment that feels right to you.

This book is just as good as Tweak, and I sincerely hope Nic keeps writing, because I, for one, will be buying his next one.

Be well Nic and thank you, thank you, thank you.

This book is a good study of what goes through addicts heads when they relapse!
By Barbara S. Reeves
When we left off with Nic Sheff in Tweak, he was in rehab, and it sounded as if it was working this time. The thing with rehab is we never know how many times it's going to take. A lot of addicts give up after a couple of tries, and everyone else gives up on them also. But you got to keep trying. You can't stop trying after four attempts if the fifth time is the one that's going to work.

Anyway, I thought Nic was going to make it this time, but in his follow-up memoir, We All Fall Down, we find out that he's just faking it, he's playing the "therapy game." He says what he knows they want to hear, and they believe him...until he gets kicked out for making out with a female client.

What I liked about Nic in Tweak was his humbleness, his honesty, and his insightfulness. But this is a different Nic Sheff in We All Fall Down. He's grandiose, he's an egomaniac with an inferiority complex, and he's got a severe case of terminal uniqueness. He thinks he's better than everyone - hipper, smarter, cooler, but, paradoxically, he thinks he's nothing. I didn't like this Nic Sheff at all. I was thinking, what a low-down, spineless wimp, know-it-all.

Then I realized these are things I don't like about myself. I remembered that this is exactly how I was when I was in my twenties. It's ugly.

Well, of course he relapses, though he doesn't sink as low as before - no hard drugs, mostly pot and alcohol. This book is a good study of what goes through an addict's head as he relapses. There's all the rationalizations, minimizations, and justifications - the twisted logic.

And it all proves that it's not the drug that's the problem. It's our inability to live life on life's terms that the problem. Of course it's a cliche now, but it's true that the drug use is just a symptom of the real problem.

We All Fall Down ends with Nic getting clean again, getting another eighteen months of sobriety. But after using for several years, it's really hard to stop using when you're in you're in your twenties. As Nic says, "Having to be sober was like being a forty-year-old trapped in a young adult's body." We all do fall down, but the important thing is to pick ourselves back up.

As someone who has struggled with drugs, and who has a father who has, this book was wonderful to read, consoling and inspiring. I cried a lot, but ended up feeling hopeful. I've relapsed a bunch of times, but I've been sober for 9 months, and feel hopeful for Nic and others who suffer with addiction.

In "Getting Control", Dr Baer offers OCD sufferers a straightforward plan for controlling their symptoms through behaviour therapy. Then, by learning to control their symptoms, they gradually reduce the anxieties that produce the obsessions and compulsions themselves.

From Publishers Weekly
According to Harvard Medical School professor Baer, who is also director of psychological research in the obsession and compulsion disorder clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital, at least six million Americans suffer from obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). He defines obsessions as intrusive thoughts that force themselves repeatedly into one's mind, while compulsions are acts one feels required to carry out. Many people so afflicted are unaware of it, much less able to find help, Baer argues in his book. He discusses fully the need for professional evaluation and describes the types of treatments provided to patients in his clinic, while pointing out that certain well-known eccentrics (e.g., Howard Hughes) suffered from OCD's aftereffects. Extensive chapters explore behavior therapy, medication (both approved and experimental) and their combined uses. The author also examines a more controversial topic--brain surgery, which is generally considered a last resort. But what makes Baer's valuable work stand out, beyond its breadth of information, is sincerity--and hopefulness.

He did it again!
By L. M. Boilard
I must admit I was skeptical when I started reading Dr. Baers revised edition of Getting Control. How can a book like this possibly get better? But it truly does. He has a lot more NEW information on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
As a sufferer of OCD, the first book was a life saver. This book gave me even more useful information and self help skills. I especially liked the new theory on thought stopping. He covers all the new medications approved for OCD. And other that are not approved but are showing promise. He covers the anxiety that comes with OCD and how to control it. There is more real life patient stories. That I could identify with. He even includes his e-mail address in case you would like to contact him! Again, Dr. Baur's true concern and compassion for his patients suffering shines through. This is a truly wonderful and extremly helpful book!

more helpful for some than for others
By gumersindo jackson
This is a very good book for people suffering from compulsions--actual physical rituals such as handwashing, for example--but is less helpful for people suffering from "pure obsessions"--that is, ruminations without overt compulsions. A number of recent books address "pure obsessions" much better than this one.

A wonderful and amazing book

This book -- and a similar one by Joseph Ciarrochi called "The Doubting Disease" -- helped turn my life around when I was deep under with OCD. Now I am so much better, and I am forever grateful. If you have OCD then don't waste your life not reading this book.

When you loved the one who was killing you, it left you no options. How could you run, how could you fight, when doing so would hurt that beloved one? If your life was all you had to give, how could you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved?

To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both fantasy and nightmare woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, a tumultuous year of temptation, loss, and strife have led her to the ultimate turning point. Her imminent choice to either join the dark but seductive world of immortals or to pursue a fully human life has become the thread from which the fates of two tribes hangs.

Now that Bella has made her decision, a startling chain of unprecedented events is about to unfold with potentially devastating, and unfathomable, consequences. Just when the frayed strands of Bella's life-first discovered in Twilight, then scattered and torn in New Moon and Eclipse-seem ready to heal and knit together, could they be destroyed... forever?

The astonishing, breathlessly anticipated conclusion to the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic that has entranced millions.

Amazon.com Review
Great love stories thrive on sacrifice. Throughout The Twilight Saga (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse), Stephenie Meyer has emulated great love stories--Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights--with the fated, yet perpetually doomed love of Bella (the human girl) and Edward (the vampire who feeds on animals instead of humans). In Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final installment in the series, Bella’s story plays out in some unexpected ways. The ongoing conflicts that made this series so compelling--a human girl in love with a vampire, a werewolf in love with a human girl, the generations-long feud between werewolves and vampires--resolve pretty quickly, apparently so that Meyer could focus on Bella’s latest opportunity for self-sacrifice: giving her life for someone she loves even more than Edward. How close she comes to actually making that sacrifice is questionable, which is a big shift from the earlier books. Even though you knew Bella would make it through somehow, the threats to her life, and to her relationship with Edward, had previously always felt real. It’s as if Meyer was afraid of hurting her characters too much, which is unfortunate, because the pain Bella suffered at losing Edward in New Moon, and the pain Jacob suffered at losing Bella again and again, are the fire and the heart that drive the whole series. Diehard fans will stick with Bella, Edward, and Jacob for as many twists and turns as possible, but after most of the characters get what they want with little sacrifice, some readers may have a harder time caring what happens next. (Ages 12 and up) --Heidi Broadhead

From Publishers Weekly
It might seem redundant to dismiss the fourth and final Twilight novel as escapist fantasy--but how else could anyone look at a romance about an ordinary, even clumsy teenager torn between a vampire and a werewolf, both of whom are willing to sacrifice their happiness for hers? Flaws and all, however, Meyer's first three novels touched on something powerful in their weird refraction of our culture's paradoxical messages about sex and sexuality. The conclusion is much thinner, despite its interminable length. [...] But that's not the main problem. Essentially, everyone gets everything they want, even if their desires necessitate an about-face in characterization or the messy introduction of some back story. Nobody has to renounce anything or suffer more than temporarily--in other words, grandeur is out. This isn't about happy endings; it's about gratification. A sign of the times? Ages 12–up. From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—Meyer closes her epic love story of a human, a vampire, and a werewolf in this, the final installment of the saga. The story opens with Bella and Edward's wedding, and relations between Jacob and Bella remain uneasy. On honeymoon and unshackled from any further concerns about premarital sex, Edward fulfills his promise to consummate their marriage before he changes Bella into a vampire. An unexpected conception throws their idyllic world back into chaos as factions (both wolf and vampire) battle over whether or not to destroy the potential monster that is killing Bella from within. The captivating angst, passions, and problems manage to satisfyingly fill pages where surprisingly little action takes place, even after the powerful child's birth brings the Cullen family under the scrutiny of the Volturi. The international cadre of vampires who come to the Cullens' aid are fascinating, but distract from the development of prime characters at a pivotal moment. The novel begins and ends with Bella's voice, while Jacob narrates the middle third of the tale, much like the final pages of Eclipse (Little, Brown 2007). While darker and more mature than the previous titles, Meyer's twists and turns are not out of character. Fans may distress as the happy ending for everyone, including a girl for Jacob, lessens the importance and pain of tough decisions and difficult self-sacrifices that caused great grief in previous books, but they will flock to it and enjoy it nonetheless.—Cara von Wrangel Kinsey, New York Public Library

The Worst Book Ever
By P. Spangler
While I've been known to exaggerate on occasion, I promise you I'm being completely serious when I say Breaking Dawn is the worst book I have ever read. The writing was atrocious, there was no drama and/or real conflict, and Meyer broke her own rules. Repeatedly.

Let's begin, shall we?

First, the writing itself was a huge problem. It's nearly impossible for me to believe Meyer was an English major in college. Maybe she was technically a literature major, but either way, she should have been exposed to enough decent writing to know how to produce it herself. And if she couldln't produce it from her own head, she probably had enough references to replicate it. Instead, Breaking Dawn reads like a terrible fanfiction. Meyer tends to overuse adjectives and adverbs, but does so in the least descriptive way possible. How did Bella look on her wedding day? I couldn't tell you, since Meyer never bothered to describe her dress other than to say it was satin-y. And how about the rest of the wedding ceremony? There were flowers "everywhere" and everyone looked "amazing." Thanks. I can totally picture that.

Bella is also the ultimate Mary Sue, which doesn't help Meyer's writing skills in my eyes. Bella is SO PERFECT. Everyone LOVES HER. Meyer's lame attempts to make Bella relatable by making her clumsy fall flat (pun intended), because the other characters think injury-prone Bella is adorable. Will Charlie object to Bella Sue getting married at 18? Of course not! Will Bella Sue become the most graceful vampire ever, even though she was the world's clumsiest person? You bet! Bella gets everything she wants in Breaking Dawn and sacrifices nothing.

There was also a conspicuous lack of drama and conflict in what should have been an epic conclusion to a series. As I mentioned above, Bella had no problem convincing Charlie that marrying Edward was the right decision. I was expecting more of an objection from the ol' sheriff. Denied. Jacob does make a small attempt to talk Bella out of turning into a vampire, but what could have been another interesting conversation is brushed aside by Bella. Why would she miss anybody she knew as a human? She'll be with her beloved Edward for all eternity; that's all she needs.

The sexy-time was also lacking. I'm not much of a smut fan, but I was hoping for more than a cheezy "fade to black" when Edward and Bella finally do the deed. After three books of anticipation and denial, Meyer doesn't have the balls to give us more than Bella walking toward Edward in the water. Seriously, Meyer? You can show Bella vomiting "a fountain of blood" but kissing before sex is too shocking? Nothing interesting here, folks.

There is also the issue of Bella's pregnancy. Nowhere in the previous three books, and I mean NOWHERE, did Bella mention a desire to be a mother. But as soon as Edward gets his vampire sperm inside her, she decides that motherhood is the most important thing on Earth. (Inconsistent much, Meyer? Another sign of bad writing!) I was expecting Bella to freak out, get angry at Edward, and blame him for ruining her life when she thought she could never get pregnant! But instead, Bella is inexplicably calm and instantly bonds with her "little nudger." Again, any drama that could have been just melted like an ice cube in Death Valley. The plot floats along...

The previously mentioned "fountain of blood" happens when Bella goes into labor. To make a long and rather gruesome story short, the baby almost kills Bella, and would have, had Edward not turned Bella into a vampire. Bella lays on a table for a couple of days until the venom stops her heart. She's dead! Let the crazed baby vampire gather her bearings! She's dangerous right now! Right? Wrong. Bella Sue is the perfect vampire, so graceful and strong. She requires almost no adjustment time, even though Meyer told us in previous books that new vampires are totally out of control. Again, all conflict nipped in the bud.

This leads us to Meyer breaking her own rules. Bella is totally in control of herself as a new vampire even though, according to Meyer's own words, it's totally normal and EXPECTED to have a lenghty adjustment period. Jasper struggled for years, but Bella gets the hang of things in a day. Of course. Meyer breaks the rules so Bella Sue can have her perfect life.

Meyer also gets into a sticky situation with Bella's pregnancy. According to Meyer, speaking through (I believe) Carlisle, vampires don't have any liquid in their bodies except for their venom. Last time I checked, sperm isn't venomous. Getting Bella pregnant should have been impossible if Meyer followed her own rules! That entire plot device (which only served to give Jacob something to imprint on) was an amateurish cop out that I would expect to find in fanfiction, not a novel written by an adult with a college degree.

Oh yeah, they named the baby Renesmee. Vomit.

And then Jacob imprints on it. Double vomit.

Allow me to backtrack for a second. I forgot to mention another scene that should have been exciting but wasn't: the confrontation with the Volturi. Yep, the leaders are back and they want to kill the Cullens for making an "immortal child." Finally, some action! The Cullens invite some vampire friends to gather at their house and fight the Volturi, which should be the epic conflict we've all been waiting for! Except it most definitely is not. It turns out that Bella has a shield she controls with her mind. All the does is put the sheild around everybody and they're impervious to weapons. The Volturi stand around and talk for a while and then... leave.

Breaking Dawn was a letdown in every sense. Meyer's writing didn't improve (it got worse, actually), there wasn't any tension or action, and a lot of the rules established in the first three books got thrown out the window.

Avoid this book at all costs.

(Note: Don't be fooled by the high number of five-star reviews; a lot of them are two sentences long and say things like, "BELLA AND EDWARD ARE IN LOVE!!!!1!11one" They may very well be, but that doesn't make it a good book.)

So bad, I want to rewrite it myself
By Chicklet
I started reading this series after I heard a rave review on NPR during their "Guilty Pleasures" segment. The middle-aged gentleman described Twilight with such enthusiasm that I couldn't resist temptation. I bought the four-book set and settled in for a long weekend of reading.

Three days and 2400 pages later, I'd finished the four novels. I adored Twilight, tried not to slap whiny Bella during New Moon, and mostly skimmed through Eclipse trying to get to something interesting. Finally, I got to Breaking Dawn. I have never been so let down by a book in my entire life. I don't even need to go into all the ways that this book was horrible - the other reviewers have done that well. But, here I go anyway:

Wedding - So, Bella's wedding to Edward was not what she wanted, but what she was willing to trade for sex and immortality. The wedding itself was not her vision and in no way represented their unique love, but was instead a fantasy created fully by Alice's vision.

Honeymoon - Meyer is telling us that sex is scary and awful. You will have a lot of pain your first time and your husband, who puts you up on a pedestal, will hate himself for "hurting" you, no matter how yummy delicious it is. Oh, and once you do get some, it's pretty much the only thing you'll want, and your new hubby will reject you, mercilessly, due to his own hang ups. Woo! I gotta get me some of that!

Also, how come it's either a little french kissing or sex? How come no one ever talks about alllll that space in between those two extremes? What a perfect place for her to talk about sex and the implications of it, especially given her target audience.

Pregnancy - You will get pregnant the very first time you have sex. Pregnancy is the most horrible state you will ever experience. It will be stunningly painful as your body is taken over by something that hurts you, and tries to kill you, and eventually chews its way out of you. The bloodbath of child birth is fine - but it says a lot, to me, about Meyer that she can't write the sex, but can write the gore. Or maybe it's about society, and not Meyer at all. Take your pick.

Renesmee - Say it out loud. I dare you. Look, I get what Meyer was trying to convey here about the beauty of having a child, the connection that a newborn's family feels to the child and how fleeting childhood is. But come on! The massive gaps in logic and leaps of faith it takes you to get here are stunning. Stunning. And impossible.

Jacob - Sigh. Poor Jacob. This boy never had an ounce of pride, he submitted it all to Bella, only to find himself a pedophile in the end. How utterly freaking awful. (and yeah, I tried to go with the whole "it's fiction, not pedophilia" but I just couldn't get there. It was creepy.)

The Cullens - Who? No seriously though, Edward had a family? Where were they after page 150?

Renee and Charlie - So, while Renee has been the primary parent and the person that Bella is closest to for the entire series, suddenly she's just...absent. Laaaame. And suddenly Charlie is Bella's first concern, but we've been given absolutely nothing by way of character development to buy into this. Again, I say: Come on!

Editing: Look, I don't know who edited this book, but ZOMG! fire that person. There were so many errors it was distracting. Dialog tagging: use it. Also, adverbs are not your friends. If Bella "shyly" does one more thing, I'm going beat her with her own arm. If you have to tell us that people are chuckling, giggling, that their eyes are "tightening" (wth does that even mean?) then you're failing at description. If you must tell and not show, read some Willa Cather. She gets away with it. You don't. So stop.

Tone: I'm guessing that Meyer took a break from Twilight land to write "The Host" and that's why the entire tone of this novel is off. It just doesn't even sound like it was written by the same person.

At the end of this novel, I wanted to rewrite the whole thing myself. I wanted to see why Bella decided that she would marry Edward. I wanted her to give a damn about the wedding and see some reverence in it. I wanted to see a real deepening in her relationship with Alice. I wanted Esme to be more than just a paper doll mother figure. I wanted a real, honest to goodness sex scene that lived up to three freaking novels worth of some of the steamiest kisses ever. I wanted Bella to pay a price for some of her choices. I wanted that epic battle with the Volturi to actually happen. I wanted someone to die. Meyer cheated us out of the thoughtful endings that we get when good triumphs over evil. That's what makes life sweet, and makes us appreciate what we have - working for it, sacrificing for it.

Bella would have actually wanted to marry Edward. She would have cared about the decorations and Alice would have developed into a real sister, and not some overblown party planner. There would have been real sex - not smutty, but real, nonetheless. Pregnancy would have disappeared. Bella would have had to make the choice - between having babies and having Edward. She would have been cruel to be kind and given Jacob his freedom. Jacob would have grown and gotten over her, and moved on and found real love with someone who loved him back - maybe even Leah, since that ground was laid pretty well. Bella would have spent months being a newborn, filled with nothing but bloodlust. Jessica would be her first victim. The Cullens would have worked tirelessly to help her transform, and we could have gotten to know them all so much better. Rosalie might have died, doing something selfless for once in her life. That would have been doubly meaningful if Meyer rewrites the whole series from Edward's POV (ala Midnight Sun, which in rough draft form is head and shoulders better than Breaking Dawn.) Bella would have to give up Charlie and Renee for a while, but eventually they would be able to be in her life, altho in a much more limited way. There are a million possibilities that could have had a very nice happy ending, with a bit of bitter thrown in with the sweet.

Meyer is a great storyteller and an okay writer. If she gets a better editor and learns some discipline, she could be very good. I found this particular book to be a total betrayal of the earlier books, which is why my review is so harsh. Overall, I hope she keeps going, and I *really* hope she keeps going with Midnight Sun, which so far, I love.

Poorly written and vastly overestimated
By Trisha
Okay, I'm not going to lie: I am addicted to Twilight. I own actual, physical copies of the first three books and the copy of Breaking Dawn I ordered from Amazon is on the way (I read an online version). But I really cannot understand why anyone, ANYONE, can treat it seriously. The entire series is filled with convenient plot devices, shallow, one-dimensional characters, and Meyer is not a very concise writer, which means that the books are long. Really long.

I'll admit the initial plot is engaging: deadly yet benevolent vampires, a forbidden love. All very marketable and appealing. What bothers me is the lack of skill with which the stories are executed. Meyer's writing is not bad, it's just amateurish. Quite honestly, I think I or any other of my friends could have written it the way she had, and I'm not even out of high school. Everything in Breaking Dawn slots neatly into place, making all the fuss that precluded it practically useless. What was the point of building all that up if it's just going to resolve it anyway?

I hear people comparing her series to Harry Potter and Pride and Prejudice, and wince. I sincerely hope that the masses don't feel this way, or else I'll lose faith in society's ability to judge quality forever.
