From Publishers Weekly
If trying something new can delay or offset the effects of Alzheimer's, as former CNN medical correspondent and syndicated "EatSmart" columnist Carper (The Food Pharmacy) contends, then readers would do well to try many of the ideas she offers in this empowering compendium. Genetically disposed to Alzheimer's, Carper, now in her 70s, has compressed the latest research on this and other types of dementia into short sections, each with a bottom-line action plan. While some are basic to all-around good health (e.g., taking a multivitamin, not smoking, limiting alcohol), others might surprise: consuming apple juice and vinegar, meditating, and surfing the Internet. Although Carper admits she has not tried all of them, she recommends that readers experiment with those best suited to their situations. Even a few nutritional (a Mediterranean diet) and lifestyle (exercise, stress relief, sleep) changes, she states, can gain as much as a decade disease-free, and by supplementing with anti-Alzheimer's powerhouses like niacin, choline, folic acid, and alpha lipoic acid, readers can push mental decline even further into the future. Whether in their 20s or well into retirement, readers will likely feel motivated to do the impossible: beat the approaching epidemic of a disease commonly viewed as hopeless.

Very easy to read
By Paul Lappen
For anyone in middle-age or older, Alzheimer's Disease is a major concern. This book shows easy ways to delay its onset, perhaps for years.

If the recommendations in this book can be reduced to one sentence, it might be: Eat Right and Exercise Regularly. Eat lots of deep color berries, like black raspberries, cranberries, plums and strawberries; they are full of antioxidants. Apple juice can boost the brain's production of acetylcholine, just like the popular Alzheimer's drug Aricept. Large doses of caffeine, like several hundred mg per day, may help clean up your brain if you are showing signs of mental problems (people react differently to high doses of caffeine, so be aware of the side effects). If you have cholesterol problems, get it under control, now. Cinnamon gives a boost to malfunctioning insulin, allowing it to process sugar normally. Weak insulin can lead to diabetes, and can damage your brain cells. Did you know that coffee helps block cholesterol's bad effects on the brain, is anti-inflammatory and reduces the risk of depression, stroke and diabetes, which all promote dementia?

Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise. Fill up your brain with lots of interesting stuff, like education, marriage, language skills, etc. You can actually grow your brain with lots of physical, mental and social activities. If you can join a health club and work out regularly, do it. If going for a walk after dinner is more your speed, do it. Conscientious people are better able to cope with setbacks in life, and can better dodge chronic psychological distress, which boosts risks of dementia. If you are clinically depressed, get it treated, or you are more likely to develop Alzheimer's. Symptoms that look like Alzheimer's can easily be something else (and something easily treatable). Go to a geriatric neurologist and get the right diagnosis, now.

The best way to prevent Alzheimer's is to reduce your personal risk factors, sooner rather than later. No one is expected to do everything in this book. Pick a dozen or so things that you can do every day, and stick with them. Anything that reduces the possibility of getting Alzheimer's, even by a little bit, is automatically a good thing. This book is very easy to read, and it is excellent.

Put this one on your "must read" list

Book review by Richard L. Weaver II

You must buy this book!

I have reviewed over 250 books (many of my reviews are categorized under the name of my publishing company, And Then Some Publishing, LLC), but this one -- among them all so far -- is one that should be read by everyone.

If you believe the title, Carper's book is about Alzheimer's and age-related memory loss, but when you read the book you quickly realize it is a book about healthy living, having a healthy lifestyle, and following a regimen that will bring you strength, vitality, and wellness.

100 suggestions seems like a lot; however, when you get going (each suggestion only takes up two or three pages) in this small, 294-page book. She has over 200 references for the book, and she gives you the web site where you can go to check out her sources:

What I especially enjoy is finding a book that underscores and supports the lifestyle that I have already adopted. I found that many of the suggestions by Carper are things I am already doing. Most healthy readers will find the same thing; however, most healthy readers (like myself) will also be interested in obtaining just a little more, going for that extra edge (the extra mile), and not just getting their current lifestyle reinforced but finding something that pushes them a little harder, a little farther, too.

A couple of the suggestions I have highlighted include #24, "Build `Cognitive Reserve'--Fill up your brain with lots of fascinating stuff." That idea delighted me because of the book reviews and essays I write. I think loving school, too, helps anyone build a cognitive reserve right from the outset. Getting immersed in information, learning, knowledge, and experiences builds a useful lifelong benefit.

In addition to writing about the importance of higher education, Carper also upholds the value of reading and writing in her #56, "Learn to Love Language -- Linguistic skills build bigger, smarter, stronger brains" (p. 168).

There are so many of her ideas that are just smart and worthy of adoption. Whether you have heard much of this before, Carper offers the research to support her ideas. We all need reminders to live properly and to be concerned about good health.

Two parts of the book need highlighting. First, within each chapter Carper ends with "What to do?" where she translates what she has said in explaining the idea of the chapter into practical, down-to-earth, specific kinds of things readers can do to achieve the results they want. For example, in #80, "Get a Good Night's Sleep," she writes as the first sentence of "What to do?": "Don't think of sleep as an inconvenience but as a legitimate way to subdue some of the brain's most devastating enemies. Take naps. . . . (pp. 233-234).

Also, the second part of the book that needs highlighting, I thought her section at the back of the book, "Putting it all together: Your anti-Alzheimer's plan" was especially good for it underscored what everyone can begin doing right now -- or, in other words, what the absolute, bottom-line, essentials are that can be started immediately: 1) surprise your brain, 2) get physical activity, 3) eat the right stuff and take supplements, and 4) take care of yourself.

You must buy this book! (I'm encouraging my wife and my other family members to read it. It's that good!) We purchased copies of the book and gave it as a gift to each of our four adult children.

This is a great book!
By thea flaum
At last--there are some things we can actually do about Alzheimer's!

The author has done a thorough, careful survey of the latest and best scientific research about the causes and prevention of Alzheimer's, and what the findings imply for all of us.

In clear layman's terms, the book tells you what the top researchers have learned about how to prevent and delay the onset of Alzheimer's. And the suggestions for things you can do to prevent it are just as simple as the title promises.

This book is a ray of hope amidst all the Alzheimer's gloom. I'm sending it to everyone in my family.

From Booklist
The first two entries in the series, Witch & Wizard (2009) and The Gift (2010), were slapdash, hackneyed affairs involving hastily thrown-together characters and a generically totalitarian future government headed by the evil The One. Thankfully, this apparent conclusion benefits from having to tie together the various threads, resulting in a tighter, more coherent story line. With the teen Resistance in tatters, magical siblings Whit and Wisty are forced to split up to achieve two seemingly impossible goals: save their maybe-not-dead-after-all parents from the Shadowland and destroy The One once and for all. Though the duo’s endless array of powers (healing, creating food, morphing bodies, reading minds, shooting flame, freezing people in place) drains most of the tension from otherwise decently constructed action scenes, Patterson’s trademark short chapters at least keep things swift. Meanwhile, the series hits its highest point of interest when it finally gives a glimpse into the childhood of The One. A better-than-expected ending to a by-the-numbers trilogy. We can hope it’s a trilogy, anyway. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Patterson, one of the best-selling authors of all time, is review-proof. The first two volumes set the tone: heavy advertising, graphic-novel supplementation, best-seller lists. Expect the same. Grades 6-9. --Daniel Kraus

The Fire by James Patterson
By Christina T.
While slogging through this 3rd installment of the series I found myself willing to set it aside for typically mundane things, like, watching corn grow. Unfortunately despite the fact that I do live in Iowa I don't live near a corn field so I opted to do things like removing my pillows from my pillow cases and putting them back in because they seemed just a little crooked. Or constantly booting up Words With Friends to see if anyone took their turn (even though 25 seconds earlier they hadn't). After almost 2 days of reading then avoiding this book I finally finished.

What Worked: Well, we did get more information about Shadowlands. As near as I can tell this area is an in between for the dead. Dead people congregate there and wait. Some, will move on to somewhere else (although I don't recall where they move on to) and some, the ones who were nasty pieces of work on earth, stay there forever and become one of the Lost.

Unfortunately I can't think of anything else that worked for me about this book.

What Didn't Work: Going from one Witch and Wizard book to another it becomes glaringly obvious that we readers are not sure what timeline is at work here. From the end of the second book to the beginning of this third much has happened that we readers must pick up second hand. There is a blood plague systematically wiping out much of the Overworld. What? What is the blood plague? Where did it come from? How did it start? Never fear good readers....it must have been started by The One Who is the One to get rid of those pesky resisters of his New Order. At least that is what we think but there is nothing to confirm this.

The continuous usage of the letter M for magic. Not sure if this was used much in the first 2 books but in this installment it got annoying. Wisty asking Whit about his M. Bad guy Pearce mocking Whit about his lack of M. It felt like a false slang term used in attempts for an older person to connect with the younger generation. Speaking of Pearce. This was the first book in which he appeared and he had a wicked powerful 'gift' of melting peoples faces off. It was apparently given to him by The One. We have to assume that The One can bestow magic on his lackeys from Pearce's abilities but it is never confirmed.

The final showdown was almost anticlimactic also. When the Allgood kids used their magic against Pearce or The One instead of hurting them and/or killing them, the magic actually made them stronger. So how did The One get defeated when the Allgoods used even more magic against him? I don't know.

Another question I have is where are all the parents? We have a handful of the Resistance group....all of them are children. No one seems to have parents. The New Order has training facilities (all for children). Their troops seem to be all kids too. Where are the adults?

In a Nutshell: After reading 3 books in this series it has become more and more apparent that this is actually a poorly produced retelling of the Harry Potter series. We have magical children, dead parents, The One Who is the One (couldn't they come up with something other than this? I mean get real. Lord Voldemort was He Who Shall Not Be Named....seems pretty close to me.), multiple fighting scenes resulting in death and despair and lets not forget about Pearce with slicked back blond hair (Draco Malfoy anyone?). I know this series is not identical to the one written by JK Rowling but there are enough similarities that it's hard not to compare. I would not recommend this series to fans of YA novels. I'd push them towards his Maximum Ride series first.

The fire, a failure? I think not
By ctsims
I enjoyed the fire. I actually couldn't put it down, I'm disappointed that it is the last one in the series, because I feel Mr. Patterson could do a lot more with it if he wanted to. But I enjoyed the series all the same, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good fantasy story.

First half of book was lame; Second half was intense
By W. Ehresman
No worries, no plotline spoilers in this review.
This book did not become an intense read until about 55 percent of the way through. It seemed like the first half dragged on and on. It is almost like a different author wrote the second half of the book. I am an adult and have read many books, and seem irritated by a few things with these books. The first is that sometimes random things happen that cannot be explained, or characters act in a way that would be completely inaccurate. If I put myself in the situation the characters are in, there are things I would NOT do that the characters have a knack for doing. There's a point of the book where some of the characters (don't want to be a spoiler) get out of a tricky situation, and out of the blue Mrs. Highsmith who was thought to be dead or missing from the previous book appears. ...SO RANDOM. Where the heck did she come from? Hello writers block.
If you are an adult you may be annoyed by stuff like this if you read a lot and have high expectations out of what you read. This book does have graphic moments that may scare pre-teens.

The second half of the book was truly great. It was intense, and they separated Whit and Wisty on seperate missions so it kept the readers attention more with the constant shift in narrators. I also felt the second half to be unpredictable. Sometimes books like these for the younger generation can be predictable. It is not like I was thinkiing "WOW! I didn't see that coming!" because I really did see some obstacles the characters were faced with coming, but the way they got out of challenges were a mystery. The conclusion of the book is NOT summarized in one chapter like some other reviewers suggusted. I felt it was spread out across a few chapters. Just when I thought it would end..behold!...A couple more pages...and a couple more...

If you read the other books, you will feel obligated to read this book. And you will probably regret it the first half of the book. Hang in there, because it gets better.

Flashback
To the oldest girl I give the gift of dance. To the boy I give the gift of music,
and to the girl, the one that looks like me, I give the gift of...

Nancy is furious. Her parents just got divorced and she and the rest of her family had to move to Florida, her mother's hometown. She is miserable. Her mother is spending all of her time with Tom Duncan, a boyfriend she used to have, and her only friend, her sister, spends all of her time at the dance studio. Nancy has nothing to do with her time and is a complete loaner, until she predicts the answers on the social studies quiz before they were even asked. That's when she finds out she, too, has a special gift. Now, all she needs to find out, is if she will use her powers for good or evil.

Mystery, suspense, and action are blended together to make this magical book, a heart-stopping adventure. I think this is not one of my favorite books that I have read by her, but Lois Duncan really describes everything in great detail so I had a large picture of the book when I was done reading. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in ESP, or just likes a good, fast, read.

This book is great because it makes you want to have ESP (extrasensory perception) too. It is a special gift the main character, Nancy has, which lets her see in to the future and past. The story is short and gets right to the point. Perfect for girls ages 9-15.
Nancy has ESP, which she got from her grandmother. Her mom and dad get divorced and her brother, Brendon and sister, Kirby move to their grandma's old house in Florida. Nancy hates leaving her father. She hates Kirby dancing all the time and not being a normal teenager. She hates that her mom is talking to other men. She knows everything that is going on and knows who is at the door or on the telephone before there is a knock or a ring. She gets in trouble from her teacher because she was thought to be cheating when it was her ESP.
What will she do next? Will she get over everything she hates or will something go terribly wrong. How will you find out these answers? Just read "A Gift of Magic."

I loved this book, it was exciting, and I never wanted to put it down. It's the best story I've read in years (other than the other Lois Duncan books.) The characters seem so real; I can picture everything that is going on.

In a Gift of Magic, Nancy has a special gift. She has ESP. She can go into other people's minds, and she knows who is on the phone, before it even rings! But now she can move things with her mind, and she's using it to get things her way. She doesn't want her sister Kirby, to go to Atlanta to become a professional dancer, so she sets her mind, and then she gets her way!

I think anybody who is 8-14 will like this book. It has some tough words in it, but it may be a little too childish for some adults.

From 1837 to 1838, thousands of Cherokee Indians were marched from their homelands in Georgia to exile in Arkansas by the same white men they has once befriended. The Cherokees journeyed through bitter cold and blazing heat, with little food or water. One out of every four died --- and with them died a culture that had existed for hundreds of years, a civilization that had existed for hundred of years, a civilization that had embraced the white man's ways only to perish through his betrayal. Today, only the names remain of this once great nation.

My Roots
By Shannon
I have read the book Only The Names Remain many many times. I am of Cherokee blood and my roots are from Oklahoma. I was very interested in my history when I was younger and I found this book in my library. It tells so much about what has happened to the Cherokees throughout those tough years. While reading it to my Grandma she pointed out that my Great Great Great Grandfather was a Cherokee Chief and is talked about in the book. In the older versions there is also a black and white drawing of him. Because of this book, I can tell my grandchildren and my children the interesting story of how their grandfather saved President Andrew Jackson's life in a battle before he became president. I'm so glad that a book like this was written to tell both the good and the bad of the Cherokee life. It makes me wish that I could learn more and more about it.

This is a terrific history of the GA Cherokee Indians. I use it in my lower elementary class. It seems to strike just the right chord with the 6,7,8 year olds.

Outstanding Children's Nonfiction Book
By Lynn Ellingwood
This book is about a 4th or 5th grade reading level but has a sophistication little seen in children's historical works or nonfiction. It tells the story of the Cherokee and provides a great background for the troubles of Native Americans in general. The book shows a lot of respect for the reader and provides insight into American History. The history is not oversimplified but is not incomprehensible for readers of many ages including 4th or 5th graders. Amazing book and I wish there were more like it.

Quitting her husband's house and moving back in with her horrible family, Lady Maccon becomes the scandal of the London season.

Queen Victoria dismisses her from the Shadow Council, and the only person who can explain anything, Lord Akeldama, unexpectedly leaves town. To top it all off, Alexia is attacked by homicidal mechanical ladybugs, indicating, as only ladybugs can, the fact that all of London's vampires are now very much interested in seeing Alexia quite thoroughly dead.

While Lord Maccon elects to get progressively more inebriated and Professor Lyall desperately tries to hold the Woolsey werewolf pack together, Alexia flees England for Italy in search of the mysterious Templars. Only they know enough about the preternatural to explain her increasingly inconvenient condition, but they may be worse than the vampires -- and they're armed with pesto.
BLAMELESS is the third book of the Parasol Protectorate series: a comedy of manners set in Victorian London, full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

I love everything about it but one thing. But that one thing's a doozy.
By Cardamon
I went into this seriously hoping that this book would redeem the godawful cliffhanger in the last one, because up to that point I'd really enjoyed the series. And I don't mean godawful in the sense of I hate cliffhangers, I mean godawful as in who has their primary love interest go off on their wife like that and expect them to remain sympathetic? Especially when the reason for her apparent infidelity is so painfully obvious that it's obvious to everyone with half a brain?

Nope. It didn't. It's quite literally one of the worst mishandled bungle of a relationship I have ever seen. First Maccon spends the first quarter of the book being hit with the stupid stick in order to be a drunken jackass to everyone around him while his pregnant wife is in danger. Obviously, this was necessary for the plot to advance to get Alexia into Italy, but there had to be a better way of doing that than making your heroine's romance interest into an unmitigated asshat. By the time he disappeared from most of the book, I was glad enough to see him gone. Then...well, I won't go into details because it would be spoilery. Suffice to say that I would have thrown the book across the room at the reconciliation scene if I hadn't been reading it on my iPad. It may, in fact, be the least satisfactory reconciliation scene ever. Honestly, I half read it as an abusive relationship at this point. Certainly, I'd have a hard time believing that Maccon holds Alexia in any great regard after this. He may love her in his own way and he certainly desires her, but I don't believe he has any respect for her at all.

I enjoyed the rest of this, and I'm sure everyone who enjoyed the first two would as well. It had the same sparkle that the first one had, with Alexia's very distinct voice and thoroughly enjoyable steampunk adventures. I greatly enjoyed the side character's stories, and loved Professor Lyall's bigger role, and Akeldama's dilemma, Madame Lefoux's adventures and inventions, and even Ivy showing that she has some wit underneath all those hats. The Templar storyline was fun, and had a lot of promise for future books, and I really enjoyed the steampunk technology crossed with vampires and werewolves and preternatural. I'd love to find out more about Alexia's father after this, in particular.

But, barring a friend whose opinion I trust telling me that she's not bungling any relationships in future books in this series, I probably won't be reading any more. It's a shame, since I do enjoy them, and enjoyed this one when Maccon wasn't onscreen. But I just hate to watch characters butchered like that, no matter how witty and charming the rest of the book is.

C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy, by Jeff Sharlet

C Street - where piety, politics, and corruption meet

Jeff Sharlet is the only journalist to have reported from inside the C Street House, the Fellowship residence known simply by its Washington, DC address. The house has lately been the scene of notorious political scandal, but more crucially it is home to efforts to transform the very fabric of American democracy. And now, after laying bare its tenants' past in The Family, Sharlet reports from deep within fundamentalism in today's world, revealing that the previous efforts of religious fundamentalists in America pale in comparison with their long-term ambitions.

When Barack Obama entered the White House, headlines declared the age of culture wars over. In C Street, Sharlet shows why these conflicts endure and why they matter now - from the sensationalism of Washington sex scandals to fundamentalism's long shadow in Africa, where Ugandan culture warriors determined to eradicate homosexuality have set genocide on simmer.

We've reached a point where piety and corruption are not at odds but one and the same. Reporting with exclusive sources and explosive documents from C Street, the war on gays in Uganda, and the battle for the soul of America's armed forces - waged by a 15,000-strong movement of officers intent on "reclaiming territory for Christ in the military" - Sharlet reveals not the last gasp of old-time religion but the new front lines of fundamentalism.

From Publishers Weekly
C Street includes everything a riveting tale about a controversial national movement should-scandal, affairs, conspiracies, death, and, of course, secrecy. Sharlet's story of American fundamentalism begins in a historical mansion on Washington DC's C Street, diverts to Argentina, takes root in Uganda, and ends at a street protest in Manhattan. The second in an unofficial series (after The Family) about a religious cabal of politicians from both major parties, Sharlet brings a wealth of research (including many quotes from conversations with "C-streeters" and others in "the Fellowship") to reveal the startling mindset of a movement few even know exists. Vivid descriptions of key players brings his tale to life; in fact, the reader is never allowed to forget that this is true, and Sharlet's repetition is unnecessary. But he deftly unravels the residence as not just a place, but an ideological greenhouse for the teachings of evangelists, Christians, proponents of the Far Right, and others who compose a fundamentalist movement that aims to put Jesus in the Oval Office and get the Bible equal footing with the Constitution.

From Booklist
Even after the sexual affairs of several congressmen brought the Fellowship (and its D.C. residence on C Street) into the light, most Americans have still never heard of this elitist fundamentalist organization. Even those who have will have trouble getting their heads around a mostly faceless organization whose goal is to convert the world to a trickle-down Christianity, as Sharlet calls it, where God has chosen the leaders (them) and everyone else follows. With our leaders somehow prechosen, it makes it easier to forgive their transgressions (the Fellowship, for example, has no problem working with heads of state like Haiti’s Papa Doc Duvalier and those in present-day Uganda, who advocate the death penalty for homosexuals). That this heavily financed, multilayered organization has been operating for decades—and today is actively implanted within the U.S. military—makes this well-documented, probing investigation even more mind-bending. Mostly, those in the Fellowship don’t talk. Maybe now the discussion will start. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: When the affairs of Fellowship members Senator John Ensign R-Nev. and South Carolina governor Mark Sanford broke, Sharlet’s book The Family became a best-seller. His follow-up is sure to attract similar attention. --Ilene Cooper

Review
"At once a gripping political thriller, a masterpiece of investigative journalism, and a timely call to arms, C Street reveals all that can be hidden within an innocuous Washington address. Jeff Sharlet delivers a warning that the blurring of the line between church and state is both an urgent local problem and a matter of global concern." (Peter Manseau, author of Rag and Bone: A Journey Among the World's Holy Dead and Songs for the Butcher's Daughter)

"Jeff Sharlet has an incredibly rare double talent: the instincts of an investigative reporter coupled with the soul of a historian." (Hanna Rosin, author of God's Harvard: A Christian College on a Mission to Save America)

"Jeff Sharlet is one of the very best writers covering the politics of religion." (Ken Silverstein, author of Turkmeniscam: How Washington Lobbyists Fought to Flack for a Stalinist Dictatorship )

"Few writers can pull off investigative journalism, historical research, and elegant storytelling. Sharlet does all this with a story that a lot of people don't want to hear and others won't believe." (Diane Winston, author of Red-Hot and Righteous: The Urban Religion of The Salvation Army )

"[Sharlet] writes with insight, verve, and, thankfully, none of the bogus punditry and bad sociology that often passes for informed discourse about the contemporary role of religion in public life. His refreshing narrative style is as engaging as his groundbreaking information." (Frederick Clarkson, The Public Eye)

"Un-American theocrats can only fool patriotic American democrats when there aren't critics like Jeff Sharlet around-careful scholars and soulful writers who understand both the majesty of faith and the evil of its abuses." (Rick Perlstein, author of Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America)

Jeff Sharlet Hits Another Home Run
By Becky Garrison
With The Family, Jeff Sharlet offered readers an inside peek into an organization that on the surface may appear to consist of "nice Christians" who host the annual National Prayer Breakfast (NPB) and DC based prayer groups. However, their version of Christian capitalism led by a muscular Jesus bears scant resemblance to the teachings of Christ as presented in the Gospels. In C Street Jeff continues his fearless reporting by expounding upon this group's global efforts, thus debunking the notion that progressives can find 'common ground' with an organization such as the Family that run roughshod over the first amendment? (One can hear the voice of Roger Williams trying to remind us of the importance of the separation of church and state.) Despite string of sex scandals and other deeds that have shut down countless other ministries, politicians and other global leaders still flock to the Family sponsored National Prayer Breakfast for their coveted photo op with the President. Perhaps this book may make them think twice about accepting their invite to the 2011 NPB.

On a side note, as Jeff has obtained unprecedented access to the Family's archival material that's stored at the Billy Graham Center (Wheaton College), I am suspect of any reporting of The Family/The Fellowship/C Street that doesn't reference Jeff's research. Good reporting requires that one go beyond simply taking the words of those who have a vested interest in the Family.

Jeff Sharlet Defends American Democracy
By Frank Schaeffer
Jeff Sharlet is on the side of true religion, freedom and democracy. In this follow up to "The Family" Sharlet follows the story of American religious extremism in high places to the next level. What is so great about this book is not just Sharlet's investigative reporting but his mastery of writing. This is actually a great book in every sense of the word, a pleasure to read. Unless more Americans become aware of the insane intentions of so many of our leaders who hide behind the cross to "reclaim" the world "for God" the USA will be headed for our own version of a theocracy. If I could think of a better way to say this I would, but all I can say is please read this book!

Stretching out a Good Idea
By Kelly Cooper
As someone who has been pretty diligent about reading Jeff Sharlet's work over the years, I was a little disappointed in this follow-up to "The Family." In it's defense, it is a follow-up and not the main course. Sharlet spends a considerable amount of time restating his previously published research, making this feel like a compilation of greatest hits instead of a new contribution. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and he acknowledges that some chapters are indeed revisited versions of old magazine articles... but the downside of this is that the content loses its luster (at least for those who keep abreast of the subject matter) as well as its value (for those of us who paid for it). To its credit, the writing is excellent and the thoughtfulness with which Sharlet approaches his work is often inspired. The section on Uganda greatly expands the reader's understanding of that country's anti-homosexual politics beyond the confines of conventional reporting.

The greatest strength of this book, unlike perhaps that of "The Family," is in the cogency of it's assessment of evangelical power. Sharlet repeatedly makes the case that the Christian Right in America is primarily a political force, bending it's theology to fit the aspirational demands of it's self-appointed ruling class. Even though Sharlet himself shies away from theological argument, it cannot, alas, be excised from this ruthless story about the acquisition of power.
