A Different Sort of Fantasy
By Nickolas X. P. Sharps
REVIEW SUMMARY: A different sort of fantasy adventure.

MY RATING: 3.5 stars

BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Condemned to a penal colony for killing his father, Blaine McFadden has learned to survive in a hostile environment. When the magic runs wild the world descends into chaos, Blaine and his friends must fight to decide their fate.

PROS: Not your average fantasy, Blaine makes for a good protagonist, strong imagery.

CONS: Unappealing change of direction, weak supporting cast, very weak ending.

BOTTOM LINE: Starts out with the swagger of a disaster/post-apocalyptic/fantasy hybrid but undergoes an unappealing change of course at the 2/3 mark and ends with a whimper.

I've been meaning to get around to reading Gail Z. Martin's The Chronicles of a Necromancer for some time. It's just one of those things, ya know? Too many good books on the market, not enough time. Well it might be a while before I get around to reading The Chronicles of a Necromancer but that's okay because Ice Forged marks the start of a new series, The Ascendant Kingdoms Saga. With Ice Forged, Martin answers the question, "What happens to a society dependent on magic when the magic vanishes."

"Is it worse to be abandoned by the gods, or to think that there never were gods to begin with."

Blaine McFadden kills his father in a fit of righteous rage. Rather than beheaded he is sent to the penal colony of Velant in the bitter cold of Edgeland. Death would have been the kinder sentence. If the harsh conditions don't kill the inmates, the twisted magic of the warden-mages just might. When ships stop coming from the mainland, the colony faces a six month long night cycle deprived of the necessary supplies. Bad omens become revolution and survival of the fittest takes on a whole new meaning. Meanwhile, across the frigid ocean, the Kingdom of Donderath is on the losing side of a continent spanning war. As the stakes increase, the King must take into consideration the use of battle magic as a last resort.

Ice Forged hits the ground running, with Blaine jumping right to the patricide and getting shipped off to Velant in no time flat. Even Blaine's time in the prison mines is cut short. In the flip of a page, six years pass and Blaine, who now goes by "Mick", has earned the right to live as a colonist of Edgeland rather than an inmate of Velant. The lifestyle is still harsh but McFadden is a relatively free man, bunking with fellow colonists and trying to irk out an existence. The world building is minimal and mostly organic. There appears to be much, much more to the world than meets the eye. It is breath of fresh, chilled wind. The penal colony of Velant is like an arctic version of Australia. It's different than the standard pseudo-Medieval Europe or pseudo-Roman Empire but the setting lacks the weight of history. That's not to say that Edgeland and Donderath don't have a history, they simply don't feel weathered and aged. It's like going to a renaissance faire. All the appropriate pieces are in place, from outfits to weapons, but everything is just a little too clean, a little too manufactured. Still, Martin gets bonus points for the penal colony of Velant.

"All tragedies turn on small emotions - pride, greed, and an inability to see a harsh truth until it's too late."

Magic is common and potentially dangerous in Ice Forged. Almost everyone has a little bit of magic, the society has become dependent on it the way our civilization is dependent on electricity. Magic could be the doom of the current age as it has already brought destruction to the ages that came before. For as crucial to the story as magic becomes, it probably would have made more impact to display it in action from the beginning. It is used in the most miniscule daily tasks, but is barely noticeable until it starts fluctuating. Perhaps that could be said about electricity in our culture, we don't even notice it until it is gone, but it would have been nice to develop more of a basis for the instability to come. I do approve of the idea of Magically Assured Mutual Mass Destruction and the fallout that comes after.

What I liked most about Ice Forged is the blending of genres. In a lot of ways Ice Forged is a post-apocalyptic fantasy novel in the vein of the television drama, Jericho. It starts out as a community of people trying to survive, cut off from the rest of civilization in the wake of a massive disaster. There are both internal and external threats. This is what made Ice Forged so worth reading. I've had my fair share of fantasy novels involving hero quests and magical amulets. This seemed so much more personal and immediate. Sadly this could not last. The attempt to establish a government of merchants to keep Velant functioning is underplayed. The conflict between the colonists and the prison warden should have been more pronounced and drawn out a little longer. My interest began to wane when Blaine and friends return to Donderath and the story morphs into a semi-typical hero quest. The third act of the novel has loads more action but is much less compelling. Oh, and loads more vampires too.

Blaine "Mick" McFadden is a decent enough protagonist. He maintains a cool head in tough situations (though it is his hot temper that landed him in Velant to begin with). He's got a hard fist, though he is fair and intelligent. His schooling sets him above the dregs of Velant, though he uses his knowledge to help his fellow colonists. He's a good brawler though not particularly skilled at armed combat. He has regrets but does not dwell on them to the point of irritation. The other primary protagonist, Connor, is much less developed. For the most part it seems as though Connor is just a placeholder, set to display the perspective of someone back in Donderath while Blaine is struggling in Edgeland. The rest of Blaine's crew is a notch above Connor, though only marginally so. They fit a little too well into the soldier/archer/thief/rogue archetypes, almost like they are ready to be played in a D&D campaign. The villains remain unexplored. The threat is there but the motivation and characterization are not present.

It's a shame that Connor isn't distinguished more as a character, as he has some of the best scenes in the entire novel. There is a scene with Connor in a belfry with magical fire descending from the sky that totally blew me away. The imagery was so dramatic and intense, I could picture it with such clarity. It is a scene fit for IMAX. It is a scene that just screams impending doom. Much of Ice Forged carries the tension of a proper disaster flick, even though it fails on the follow through.

The ending is what truly bothers me. There is no climax. No climax at all. Ice Forged doesn't even end on a cliffhanger so much as a to-be-continued. It's hard to swallow after 500+ pages. There is nothing to offer the reader any sense of closure until the next story in The Ascendant Kingdoms Saga. It is highly unsatisfying. Complaints aside, I still see potential in this post-apocalyptic fantasy world that Gail Z. Martin has crafted. There are plenty of interesting avenues to explore pertaining to the rebuilding of society in the aftermath of disaster. Martin writes these themes quite well and I feel as though taking a step back from the magical MacGuffins would greatly enhance the quality of writing.

Strange pacing gives an otherwise strong story a few issues
By Amazon Customer
Full disclosure: I received an ARC of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

This was an interesting book. The premise and settings were beautifully described, the main characters were interesting and sympathetic, but the story failed on pacing.

In spurts this book is both really, really interesting...and then boring. For the vast majority of the book the pacing isn't too much of a problem. I noticed it, but it wasn't hugely distracting the by far the majority of it was interesting and fairly consistent in pace. However, it's in the last couple hundred pages that things start to slow down significantly.

It's not that nothing relevant is happening. Things are relevant, I'm sure, but they don't seem to be moving the story along. You get used to a fairly fast-paced story and then all the sudden the book slows way, way down.

Personally, I got bored. I kept waiting for the pace to pick back up and it didn't. The last quarter of this book just utterly crawled along. I found myself repeatedly looking to see how many pages I had until it was done, which is never a good sign.

I did finish the book. The ending was...a bit of a let-down, to be honest. At least it wasn't a godawful cliffhanger. There was resolution, but not much of it. The entire thing the characters had been pushing towards for the second half of the book just sort of fizzled and left me scratching my head. My first thought was 'well, that was certainly anticlimactic'.

All in all, it's not a bad book, just not a particularly spectacular one either. It doesn't have anything to really set it apart in a field full of epic fantasy.

A good book
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
Condemned for murdering his father, and sent to distant, icy Dondareth, Blaine McFadden's life seemed to be over. Worse, with the war going badly, the home country has less ability and desire to supply its hellish penal colony. And when the magic mysteriously fails, it soon becomes apparent that something has gone terribly, terribly wrong. Now, it is up to Blaine to undertake a perilous journey, and put things right...if he can keep himself alive that is!

Overall, I found this to be a good book. I liked the interesting setting of Dondareth, and wish that more of the book had occurred there. In certain ways I think that the author skimped on that part of the book, using it mostly as a launching pad for true tale she wants to tell, the story of what happens on the mainland.

I setting of the story (mostly Dondareth) was quite interesting, and I did like the story of Blaine and what happened to him. It's a very interesting take on sword-and-sorcery, without resorting to elves and dwarves. The vampire angle is OK, though their keeping their magic did damage the story some.

So, let me just say that while I did not like everything about this book, I did enjoy it, and was very glad that I read it. Now, I am just waiting for the sequel to come out - and I hope I don't have to wait long!

Love it.
By R. R.
This was a Christmas gift from a set of grandparents. I usually don't like themed things such as this, but my son just loves this book and he is now 14 months. He will pick this up from his bookshelf and bring it over and set it in my lap (my first child, so I think everything he does is just amazing!).

PROS:
1). The story is short, simple and sweet. As many times as he picks this up, I don't mind reading it to him.
2). The pictures are bright and colorful. When he gets around to talking and colors, we'll refer to this book.
3). He loves the flap pages and the actual pages are nice and stiff.

CONS:
The only con I can think of is the flap pages are NOT nice and stiff and would probably rip easily.

My son has books I put in 2 categories: one where it's hardy, stiff, no thin pages or fancy things hanging out that he is able to freely get to at any time. The other category is for fancier books, like this and a few other lift tab ones, ones with thin pages, ones with sound or lights that can break if he throws the book, etc. and I put these on the top of his shelf. I love books and respect books, so hopefully will teach my son the same.

I will be buying more of these books as holidays and birthdays come because he likes them so and it's short enough to hold his attention span. Thank you.

Completely wrong (from experience)
By Thomas Y. Galloway
As someone who did many phone and onsite interviews at Google, served on a Google Hiring Committee for several years, and even developed a general interview style/format for an Engineering subgroup, I have to say that this book would be worse than useless for someone trying to get hired by Google, at least on the Engineering side. This is based on browsing through the available pages online here.

At least since 2003, Google Engineering does not ask puzzle/riddle questions in interviews. In fact, we're specifically told not to ask such questions. And any Hiring Committee worth its salt would, when given feedback from an interviewer indicating they'd asked such questions, at the very least email/talk to the interviewer and tell them not to do it again, and if a substantial part of the interview had been such questions, would throw out the interview feedback.

Heck, the author didn't even fact check the list of Google perks given early on; the hybrid car rebate was eliminated several years ago, and the mass ski trips came to an end when the company got too big.

If you're smart enough to work at Google, ignore this book completely and search the web or your professional network for accounts of the interview process by people who've actually worked at and done interviews for Google.

Interesting Book With a Misleading Title
By Dave F
I really wish this book didn't have the tantalizing (and very misleading) title. It's basically a book of brain teasers that are very loosely associated with Google or other tech firms. As background: I *did* read the entire book and have also interviewed at many tech firms and startups for Software Engineering positions. Including navigating through many difficult interviews at Google to receive an offer from them and speaking with *many* fellow engineers who have also interviewed at Google. So this review is from the perspective of software engineering, not sales or the many other (important) positions that exist at Google but aren't at the core of its business.

With an interview at Google imminent, I purchased the Kindle edition of the book on a whim to help study. It mostly plays on myths of what the interview questions are like at Google, i.e. "Trick Questions, Zen-like Riddles, Insanely Difficult Puzzles, and Other Devious Interviewing Techniques..." Unfortunately if you use this as a study guide for a Software Engineering position, it's going to waste your time. Let me say that again in another way: this book will not help to prepare you for a Software Engineering interview at Google. In fact it might be detrimental because you'll spend valuable time and brain cycles working out the (fun!) brain teasers in this book rather than brushing up on the algorithms and CS fundamentals that are so much more important.

(As an aside: I will say that despite the ban on brain teasers at Google, I *was* asked a brain teaser on one of my last interviews. Out of 8 interviews and well over 20 problems, it was only 1, though. And it isn't in the book.)

Read this book if you want to read fun brain teasers and work through challenging problems. The problem descriptions are good and the explanation of the solutions (including frequently working from the "easy" answer through to the "best" one) is very good for non-technical people to read. For software engineers, particularly reasonably experienced ones, the explanations can definitely border on pedantic and overly obvious. There's also some awkward use of technical terms that make it clear it's not written by an engineer. For non-technical people, however, it's written in an accessible style with good humor that will likely add to the fun. The problems are frequently legitimately tricky no matter who the audience is, but again, they're not the types of things that are asked at Google. It's a good thing to read on the subway to/from work -- problems are bite-sized, so you can knock one or two off during the ride and pick up where you left off.

I saw an exchange of comments between the author of this book and the author of "Cracking the Coding Interview" on a couple of reviews. For what it's worth, the author of "Cracking" is more accurate from my perspective -- and her book is far, far better at preparing for a software engineering interview.

Great for Entertainment.. not Employment
By Baze
I don't know what this author's thinking, but Google (and similar companies- Goldman Sachs, Yahoo!, Apple, Microsoft, Cisco, etc.) don't really ask such questions. This sounds more like very specialized boutique firms or even graduate programs.. maybe even start-up company interviews. I know from my friends at Google (where I've interviewed) that their questions were really straightforward, and required much knowledge about yourself, your practice/discipline, and the company. As some reviewers already noted, some of these companies aren't even allowed to ask such questions.

In fact, for one of my computer programmer friends, the interview went really... casually. Her situation was probably a break from the norm, of course, but these questions and puzzles were just absurd, in her (and my) opinion.

Nevertheless, the book is well written and very accessible. The author starts off the book with almost a prose-like style of writing, and hooks you in from the very beginning. He even sounds really believable! If only his premise were true, I'd give this book a solid 5 stars.

The ideas presented are worth thinking about and trying to solve in your spare time. Who knows- you might even become brighter from working through them. They're really fun, challenging, and entertaining. However, they are not representative of the real interviews that prospective employees endure.

Bottom line- buy it, I guess, if you enjoy puzzles. However, you can find much better (and resourceful) puzzle books out there.

Hope this helps. Comment if you have any questions!

Flyboys: A True Story of Courage, by James Bradley

James Bradley's #1 bestseller Flags of Our Fathers made real the humanity and legacy of war as few books had before. Now, in Flyboys, Bradley returns to World War II and an extraordinary-and totally unknown-true story of courage.Over the remote Pacific island of Chichi Jima, nine American flyers-Navy and Marine pilots sent to bomb Japanese communications towers there-were shot down. One of those nine was miraculously rescued by a U.S. Navy submarine. The others were captured by Japanese soldiers on Chichi Jima and held prisoner. Then they disappeared. When the war was over, the American government, along with the Japanese, covered up everything that had happened on Chichi Jima. The records of a top-secret military tribunal were sealed, the lives of the eight Flyboys were erased, and the parents, brothers, sisters, and sweethearts they left behind were left to wonder.Flyboys reveals for the first time ever the extraordinary story of those men. Bradley's quest for the truth took him from dusty attics in American small towns, to untapped government archives containing classified documents, to the heart of Japan, and finally to Chichi Jima itself. What he discovered was a mystery that dated back far before World War II-back 150 years, to America's westward expansion and Japan's first confrontation with the western world.Bradley brings into vivid focus these brave young men who went to war for their country, and through their lives he also tells the larger story of two nations in a hellish war. With no easy moralizing, Bradley presents history in all its savage complexity, including the Japanese warrior mentality that fostered inhuman brutality and the U.S. military strategy that justified attacks on millions of civilians. And, after almost sixty years of mystery, Bradley finally reveals the fate of the eight American Flyboys, all of whom would ultimately face a moment and a decision that few of us can even imagine.Flyboys is a story of war and horror but also of friendship and honor. It is about how we die, and how we live-including the tale of the Flyboy who escaped capture, a young Navy pilot named George H. W. Bush who would one day become president of the United States. A masterpiece of historical narrative, Flyboys will change forever our understanding of the Pacific war and the very things we fight for.

From Publishers Weekly
The author of Flags of Our Fathers achieves considerable but not equal success in this new Pacific War-themed history. Again he approaches the conflict focused on a small group of men: nine American Navy and Marine aviators who were shot down off the Japanese-held island of Chichi Jima in February 1945. All of them were eventually executed by the Japanese; several of the guilty parties were tried and condemned as war criminals. When the book keeps its eye on the aviators-growing up under a variety of conditions before the war, entering service, serving as the U. S. Navy's spearhead aboard the fast carriers, or facing captivity and death-it is as compelling as its predecessor. However, a chapter on prewar aviation is an uncritical panegyric to WWI aerial bombing advocate Billy Mitchell, who was eventually court-martialed for criticizing armed forces brass. More problematic is that Bradley tries to encompass not only the whole history of the Pacific War, but the whole history of the cultures of the two opposing countries that led to the racial attitudes which both sides brought to the war. Those attitudes, Bradley argues, played a large role in the brutal training of the Japanese army, which led to atrocities that in turn sharpened already keen American hostility. Some readers' hackles will rise at the discussion of the guilt of both sides, but, despite some missteps, Bradley attempts to strike an informed balance with the perspective of more than half a century.

From Booklist
Bradley's phenomenal best-seller, Flags of Our Fathers (2000), was rejected by about 20 publishing houses before Bantam took a chance. His new publisher is not leaving the popularity of the encore to chance, launching it with an intense promotional campaign. Structured similarly to Flags, which concerned the flag-raisers of Iwo Jima, this work reconstructs the lives of several young men at war. Eight pilots and airmen were shot down by the Japanese military at Chichi Jima in 1944-45, George H. W. Bush among them. A well-known part of his political biography, Bush's story of escape is recounted somberly (Bush's crewmates died). The fates of the others shot down, who were captured, Bradley gathered in part from a source that was secret until a few years ago: records of a war-crimes trial of Japanese officers in command at Chichi Jima. Bradley sensitively builds the trial's unpleasant evidence (concealed, presumably, to spare pain to the airmen's relatives) into the narrative, which he frames with a portrayal of the Japanese military mind-set, which condoned the commission of atrocities. There are many brutally graphic passages about the torture and slaying of the American prisoners, which may prove too daunting for some readers, but Bradley succeeds in restoring dignity to the American airmen. Sure to command a large audience. Gilbert Taylor

It is a good read, but not great
By Pixleman
Its strength is its weakness: Bradley is so concerned to personalize the story around the lives of his main characters that the bigger story of the role of aviation gets bogged down. It is a good read, but not great.

Why America Dropped the Bombs
By Jana A. Metheny
I am old enough to have lived through the war and remember it well. I never knew why Japan declared war on the U.S., even though I have taken every history class offered throughout my school career. "Flyboys" is probably the most brutal book I have ever read, almost too difficult in places. I am grateful to James Bradley for having written this book, I now understand why America dropped the Atomic Bombs and put an end to that war. "Flyboys" is a must read.

Soul Eater is one of the best manga/animes out there
By Hannah
I say this truly without hyperbole, "Soul Eater" is one of the best pieces of graphic fiction I've ever read.

If you're looking at volume 7 odds are you already know the basic plot (which is incredibly bizarre and probably better explained by someone else in the description or review section of volume 1). In this volume the students and teachers of the DWMA must grapple with Asura's return. Volume 7 introduces a lot of new characters and concepts. We find out about Asura's Madness Wavelength (which the Kishin emits simply by existing and pretty much destroys any notions of sanity, both in people and the very fabric of reality. It can drive a person to do things they never would otherwise and it can raise Atlantis right out of the ocean). We meet the other Death Scythes (Spirit obviously isn't the only one. He's Death's personal weapon but there are others around the world, guarding the other continents for Death.) This volume also introduces some new Big Bads (Asura's not really one for confrontation).

Seven is the first volume with Justin Law (the youngest death scythe, who became one without the help of a Meister. It's very easy to believe he's still just a teenager, even if he towers over everyone else), the witch Arachne (Medusa's older sister. Certainly not as dynamic as Medusa, but still interesting.), Marie Mjolnir (another death scythe, who wants nothing more than to settle down and retire), Azusa Yumi (death scythe, she has the ability to see everything and uses it to keep everyone else in check. Spirit and Stein describe her as a legendary tattletale), and a few others. The newcomer weapons are also all unique and different, Justin is a guilltine (which seems strange and useless but Justin knows how to handle it), Marie is (as you probably guessed) a hammer, Azusa is a crossbow, and Sid's Weapon, Mira Naigus, is a knife.

It's also the first volume with Crona as a student at the DWMA (Crona is possibly my favorite character in the series, terrified but brave, abused and struggling to understand kindness and a world free from Medusa). The friendship that blossoms between Crona and Maka is sweet, believable, and charming. Okubo explores Stein's dwindling sanity and how Asura's return has effected the students of the DWMA. If there's one thing that Okubo seems to understand it's the human mind. This is evident in how he toys with his characters' sanity and depicts everything from Kid's OCD to Crona's learned helplessness to Maka's distrust of her father.

This is not a manga series you can jump in in the middle of, so if you haven't read or watched any of Soul Eater I recommend starting with volume one or the first episode (both versions are awesome). The art style is crude and takes a bit of getting used to. However once you get over the slightly disproportionate and pug-nosed characters the uniqueness of the aesthetic and bizarre scenery are charming. The more surreal panels in which Okubo really lets loose seem far more natural to him and are, in my opinion, more enjoyable visually. There's also this weird cultural/translation issue, despite the series taking place predominantly in America and having globetrotting characters everyone seems to be Japanese in one way or another. For example despite being from Brooklyn Patty calls Liz "Onee-chan." And everyone, regardless of nationality, seems to slip in at least one "-chan," "-sempai," or "-sama." There're lots of skirt flipping, nose-bleeds, and the like. But it might just be me who finds it distracting.

The series is unique, fun, thrilling, and surprisingly deep (grappling with concepts like sanity and the nature of the human soul). The characters are all engaging, well-written, and well-defined. (I think Okubo might have OCD himself as, although Death the Kid's is played up for laughs, it is very realistic.) There isn't a single character I dread seeing (and I am very hard to please in this regard).

In other words, if you are an Otaku and you haven't already gotten into Soul Eater you should get on it RIGHT NOW. Even if you aren't really an Otaku and just a fan of graphic literature Soul Eater is still a must read. I would recommend it to people who scorn graphic novels, manga, etc., but I think the bizarre plot and sometimes downright ugly art style would turn them off. But it's their loss, they are missing out on something truly wonderful.

Another great book in the series. I love the mix of random characters, brutal fights, and interesting character development. The artwork is also great.

This is a series my mid-teen Granddaughter has been reading from the beginning. Since I had pre-ordered it she was thrilled to receive it before she had to go look for it in the bookstore. I have pre-ordered the next installment, so I'm on my way to another happy hug!

The Monsters: Mary Shelley and the Curse of Frankenstein, by Dorothy Hoobler, Thomas Hoobler

One murky night in 1816, on the shores of Lake Geneva, Lord Byron, famed English poet, challenged his friends to a contest--to write a ghost story. The assembled group
included the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley; his lover (and future wife) Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin; Mary's stepsister Claire Claremont; and Byron's physician, John William Polidori. The famous result was Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a work
that has retained its hold on the popular imagination for almost two centuries. Less well-known was the curious Polidori's contribution: the first vampire novel. And the
evening begat a curse, too: Within a few years of Frankenstein's publication, nearly all of those involved met untimely deaths. Drawing upon letters, rarely tapped archives, and their own magisterial rereading of Frankenstein itself, Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler have crafted a rip-roaring tale of obsession and creation.

From Publishers Weekly
In this absorbing biography, the Hooblers, historians and children's authors (The American Family Albums), chronicle the turbulent life of Mary Shelley (1797–1851), author of the classic gothic novel, Frankenstein. They open with a moving sketch of the life of her famous mother, feminist rebel writer Mary Wollstonecraft, who died 11 days after giving birth to Mary. Sixteen-year-old Mary eloped to France, in 1814, with the freethinking Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Effectively surrounded by egotistical and rapacious "monsters" such as Lord Byron, Mary Shelley, a new mother at 19, penned the tale of Frankenstein in response to a challenge set by Byron to guests at his Swiss villa. The Hooblers amply relate how the themes of Mary Shelley's masterpiece correspond to her life. Portraying Mary Shelley's stoic endurance of trauma and loss— two of her children died early—the Hooblers describe her final misery when Percy Shelley drowned while she was still in her early 20s. Summarizing Mary's other novels and recounting how she championed Shelley's posthumous literary reputation while raising her remaining son to conventional manhood, the Hooblers' well-crafted biography will appeal to all who wish to learn more about the conception of Frankenstein and its enigmatic author. 8 pages of b&w photos. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, Frankenstein, is one of the best-known books in history, but many do not know that the lives of its author and those around her were equally as dramatic and tragic as those of the characters in her tale. Mary was the daughter of two famous radical authors, William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, who died just 11 days after giving birth to Mary. At only 16, Mary eloped with the charismatic and eccentric Percy Shelley, who was besotted with Mary but already wed to another woman, by whom he had two children. Mary and Percy brought Mary's stepsister, Claire Claremont, with them, and she not only had an affair with Percy but also pursued Lord Byron, a poet as famous for his stunning good looks as for his verse. This group, along with Byron's emotionally fragile physician, John Polidori, gathered together for a summer in Switzerland, where a challenge Byron threw out inspired Mary to write Frankenstein. Though the novel went on to meet with great success, the lives of all the authors would be touched by great tragedy in the following years. The lives of the writers were every bit as exciting as those of the characters they created, and the Hooblers recount the ups and downs in the lives of these Romantic-era geniuses with thrilling, intense prose. As exciting and fast paced as a good novel, this book is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in literary genius and the lives of people gifted with it. Kristine Huntley

Compelling and entertaining
By Amazon Customer
The authors did a fantastic job assembling the fascinating lives of Mary Shelley, Percy, and Lord Byron. After reading Frankenstein, I could not believe such a young woman had written the story, and wanted to know more about the author.

This book answers the question of how a young woman could develop and write such a story. Her life story and the people that surround her make for a very interesting read. I was shocked and surprised by many facts throughout this work. For a non fiction book, it was a real page turner and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.

I wasn't sure what to expect...
By S. O'Toole
I bought this book because I was curious as to the origins of "Frankenstein" and walked away with a desire to learn a lot more about the central figures. The authors do an excellent job of recalling the life of Mary Shelley (which was tragic) and the rest of the group that met that "dark and stormy night" in 1816 to tell ghost stories.
Lord Byron, Percy Shelley and John Polidori were all figures I knew marginally but the Hooblers have made them live in the pages of this wonderfully diverse study. They were fascinating people.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly. There are very few biographies as engaging as "The Monsters". Anyone with an interest in literature, monsters or just interesting people will enjoy this book.
