Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10, by Marcus Luttrell

On a clear night in late June 2005, four U.S. Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border. Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force. Less then twenty-four hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive.

This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history. But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing. Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers.

A six-foot-five-inch Texan, Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow-by-blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs. He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks. In this rich , moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare-and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

About the Author
Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell joined the United States Navy in March of 1999 and became a combat-trained Navy SEAL in January, 2002. After serving in Baghdad, he was deployed to Afghanistan in the Spring of 2005. Patrick Robinson is known for his best-selling US Navy-based novels and his autobiography of Admiral Sir Sandy Woodward, One Hundred Days, was an international best-seller. He lives in England and spends his summers in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he and Luttrell wrote Lone Survivor.

From The Washington Post
If you're looking for a true story that showcases both American heroism and Afghani humanity, Marcus Luttrell's Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 (Little, Brown, $24.99), written with Patrick Robinson, may be the book for you. In June of 2005, Luttrell led a four-man team of Navy SEALs into the mountains of Afghanistan on a mission to kill a Taliban leader thought to be allied with Osama bin Laden. On foot, the team encountered two adult men and a teenage boy. A debate broke out as to whether the SEALs should summarily execute the trio to keep them from alerting the Taliban. Luttrell himself was called upon to make the decision. He was torn between considerations of morality and his survival instinct, and he points out that "any government that thinks war is somehow fair and subject to rules like a baseball game probably should not get into one. Because nothing's fair in war, and occasionally the wrong people do get killed."

Luttrell opted to spare the Afghanis' lives. About an hour later, the Taliban launched an attack that claimed nearly a hundred of their own men but also the lives of all the SEALs except Luttrell, who was left wounded.

Not long after that, the Taliban shot down an American rescue helicopter, killing all 16 men on board. Luttrell is sure that the three Afghanis he let go turned around and betrayed the SEALs.

But if nothing is fair in war, neither is anything foreordained. Luttrell was found by other Afghanis, one of whom claimed to be his village's doctor. Once again, Luttrell had to rely on his instincts. "There was something about him," Luttrell writes. "By now I'd seen a whole lot of Taliban warriors, and he looked nothing like any of them. There was no arrogance, no hatred in his eyes." Luttrell trusted the man and his colleagues, who took him back to their village, where the law of hospitality -- "strictly nonnegotiable" -- took hold. "They were committed to defend me against the Taliban," Luttrell writes, "until there was no one left alive."

The law held, and Luttrell survived, returned home and received the Navy Cross for combat heroism from President Bush.

From AudioFile
This gripping, inspiring take-no-prisoners combat memoir of Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor from his unit during Operation Redwing, a post-9/11 military operation on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, grabs the listener from the opening lines and won't let go. Unabashedly patriotic and unapologetic, it is a testament to the power of duty and honor, commitment to country, and enduring bonds forged by teammates. Kevin Collins's galvanizing performance as Luttrell takes us from his youth on an East Texas horse ranch to Seal training in Coronado, to fighting the Taliban in remote, isolated villages. With a slight Texas accent, Collins exudes the confidence and strength of a young warrior going into battle, determined to protect and defend. With almost spitting anger, he conveys the dilemma of soldiers committed to honoring ³rules of engagement,² knowing the enemy does not follow those same rules. This masterful production transcends political persuasion. M.H.N. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

An Outstanding Portrait of Bravery, Sacrifice & Survival
By BillBurn
This book is a compelling, easy read that you will find hard to put down. The first part takes you through SEAL training in Coronado, CA and gives you a deep appreciation for just how hard it is to become a SEAL, while the second half takes you through a harrowing battle that in many ways validates just why the SEAL selection and training process is so difficult and so effective.

The battle sequence in Afghanistan and its aftermath is incredibly intense . The best screen writer in Hollywood couldn't have dreamt up something more intense, moving, and awe inspiring. If they make it into a movie it will in some ways be like a Afghani inspired version of Full Metal Jacket.

Reading this fills one with humility and gratitude for the sacrifice that all the members of our armed services make on our behalf, but especially for the men of the SEAL teams. All I can say is that I am very glad they are on our side.

As an aside, if you enjoy books like this you should check out Bravo Two Zero by Andy McNab, an SAS operative who served in the first Iraq war. I found it highly ironic that in both cases great misfortune results from acts of human mercy that elite soldiers felt compelled to take despite the clear risk it posed to their own lives. These books should be required reading for anyone who questions the character and moral fiber of such brave men.

Whoa.
By M. Silverstein
This book was recommended to me by someone I deeply respect. I'm not a military person so I have no basis of relativity here but suffice it to say I am proud to be an American and have guys such as this doing what they do best.

I read this book in one day. Start to finish. I couldn't put the thing down. It's that intriguing. You often hear about the SEALs but never really get to hear stories (or at least I don't) about the operations they go on. Yeah, they're dangerous but that's about all you get. You hear about their training and how they've gone through hell and back and the need to prepare but you don't really understand why. Maybe that's just me being a naive civilian (I'm sure other military folks understand firsthand) but I can tell you, reading this book gave me a much different perspective on what an "operation" is.

Again, I'm not a military buff. I've thought the military is absolutely something we need but this book isn't about rah-rah-rah go America, it's about the journey of one man - Marcus Luttrell - from his pre-training days, through the BUD/S training, then right on into Operation Redwing which brought him and his team into one of the most fierce battles I've ever read or heard about.

This story makes you want to cheer and cry at the same time. I turned the last page and was awestruck. Proud to be part of a country where Service, Loyalty, Honesty and Integrity still mean something and that we have a duty to thank and remember our military service members.

Coming face-to-face with Taliban and having to survive - sometimes with a bit of luck (maybe this is a higher power watching down, who knows) - six days in the backcountry, seeing your team members KIA, I can't even imagine it. Marcus Luttrell and his fallen comrades deserve every ounce of respect, including those still serving.

For those reading this, should you buy this book? Absolutely. I can say without a doubt it's a nail-biting, page-turning, harrowing experience that I think every person should read. Doesn't matter which side of the political fence you sit on, all political BS aside, everyone should read this - it's a perspective that only comes from someone who's experienced it firsthand.

No one likes war and reading this isn't about agreeing or disagreeing with Iraq, Afghanistan or the wars to come, it's about understanding what it takes to do what it takes to survive, to never give up, to have the courage and strength both physically and mentally to do what you have to do. Sometimes we get caught up in our own little battles in our own little world but all it takes is something like this story to really give you a true perspective on things.

Turning the last page (and seeing the pictures at the end, and I wish there were more of them), made me reaffirm that my family, wife and kids are the most important things in my life and that I love this country. We fight because there are those who will try and take it away if we don't. Never give up.

So, now that I've stepped off my soapbox, would I buy this book. Oh yeah I would.

Compelling story that will fill you with pride for our military heroes.
By S. Randall
I bought this book for my husband, who is currently serving in the U.S. Army. He greatly enjoyed it, and so did I. It's an easy read, but it will hold your attention until the end. It starts out by walking you through SEAL training, which allows you to understand just how difficult it is for the men to make it through in the first place.
Then the book shifts gears and discusses the first-hand account of a battle in Afghanistan that will quickly make you realize why SEAL training is so grueling and give you a new appreciation for our men and women in uniform. The story is told in a way that keeps you captivated, but also teaches you a lot. It's very well written. If you enjoy true stories of military heroism or you're just looking for an interesting historical read, this book is a great choice. It will certainly be read by generations. I would recommend this book for adults or older teenagers (15 or above). It's a great read, and I know I will revisit this book again in the future.

According to PW , this "absorbing reworking of the Faustian legend has plenty of relevance for modern readers. Deuker skillfully blends gritty basketball action with well-rounded characters to create a vivid contemporary morality tale." Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8-12 In a well-constructed juxtaposition, senior Joe Faust fears that, like the legendary Dr. Faustus, he has made an irrevocable pact with the devil. The only child of a famous geneticist and a sculptress, Joe feels inadequate except on the basketball court. When the family moves to Seattle, Joe is eager to experience the non-conformity of public school and the competition of Metro basketball, but his parents veto nearby Loyal High in favor of Eastside, an academic private school. Joe unleashes his frustrations in an abandoned gym where the devil he's read about in Doctor Faustus seems to inspire a series of perfect shots. Desperate for success and identity, Joe vows, "Give me a full season, give me twenty-four games of this power, and my soul is yours." Joe becomes a superstar, but his uneasiness is heightened as he delves deeper into Dr. Faustus in his English class. Finally, when Joe wins the twenty-fifth game, he realizes that, "The devil's workif he had done anywas over." For better or worse, Joe learns that he is the master of his fate. This well-paced first novel is a clever blend of family conflict, superstition, and exciting sports action. Adolescent readers will empathize with the mind games that Joe plays as he struggles for self-identity and independence; teachers will delight in the literary references and analogies; and librarians will praise this fine addition to sports fiction. An absolutely original sports novel
By Robert James
"On the Devil's Court" is a wonderfully fast, easy, and exciting read. Joe Faust's life has gone into the dumps, and the only thing that matters anymore is basketball. Unfortunately, his basketball game is rotten these days too. So, Joe sells his soul to the devil for a perfect season of basketball. Or does he? Readers are propelled through the book by one realistic conflict after another, with plenty of surprises to keep the reader guessing about the state of Joe's soul. I've taught this book to high school freshmen for a number of years now, and the boys always love it. This is a great book for younger readers, or slower readers, because it is written in clean, simple sentences that few readers will have trouble with. All in all, a first-rate first novel!

A totally awesome book awaits you- it's a must read!!!
By Adrienne
On the Devil's court is a GREAT book!!! Joe Faust, a senior in high school, sees his basketball skills deteriorating, and desperately wants to improve so he can make the varsity team. One night, while in an old deserted gym, Joe makes a terrifying bargain, agreeing to sell his soul to the Devil in exchange for one straight season of power. When the end of the year rolls around, Joe's team is undefeated, and they make the championships. Joe's deal with the Devil is done.
On the Devil's Court takes place in Seattle where Mr. Deuker lives, and the story is very true to real life. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to any one who likes basketball and suspense, and would like to add, if anyone is interested, that Mr. Deuker is a very nice and funny person, and is my WONDERFUL teacher!!!

A MUST READ BOOK- On the Devil's Court
By Greeky
On the Devil's Court is an intresting book written by Carl Deuker. It deals with a boy named Joe, who isn't really fantastic in any area of life. His main concern is to play varsity basketball, but he hasn't been playing so great. Then, a miracle happened. He is a star on his varsity team, one of the most popular kids in school, and a straight A student. Are these accomplishments of his hard work or is someone or something helping him!

From Booklist
In her pink dress and headband, Martha looks the part of a ladylike otter child. And indeed, she is accomplished at giving hugs, sharing snacks, and making presents. But when she’s “not so nice,” she compounds the problem by stubbornly refusing to apologize. After a time-out proves insufficient, some parental tough love brings her around to a different point of view. Written with simplicity and a strong sense of narrative structure, the story conveys sympathy for Martha’s feelings while outwardly focusing on how she acts and what she wants. The sensitive colored-pencil drawings, tinted with watercolor washes, concentrate on the characters; with a minimum of props and no backgrounds, they spotlight the four members of Martha’s family and clearly express nuances of emotion with the mere tip of a snout or slant of an eyebrow. Both adults and children will enjoy the droll humor and good storytelling in this well-designed picture book. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Review
The watercolor-and-colored-pencil artwork encapsulates Martha's girliness, her better-than-thou attitude and her internal struggle with her conscience. Whatley's representations of body language and facial expression powerfully complement the text. An enjoyable introduction to what could be a new beloved character KIRKUS

About the Author
Samantha Berger has always loved children's books, cartoons, and comics waaay more than saying sorry. And she still does! She grew up (kinda) to write for Nickelodeon and create stories just like this one. she is the author of Martha Doesn't Say Sorry, Martha Doesn't Share, and Crankenstein. Samantha lives in New York City with her dog who never apologizes (even when she steals meatballs off the table).

Bruce Whatley never had to say sorry when he was little--at least that's what his Mum says. He still likes to play with crayons and paint. His most favorite thing in the world to paint is people. But they don't like it when he gets it in their ears! Oops...sorry! Bruce lives in Australia with his wife, Rosie, and their two grown-up children.

I'm sorry that Martha can not earn 6 stars!
By NY Girl
What a fantastic book for children. The verse, illustrations and yes, even the subtle message, combine for a perfect read for my daughter. Martha has many relatable qualities and I love that she is a character that children can easily identify with. I predict that she will be a classic and I am looking forward to more from Martha!

I found Martha because we so enjoyed "It's Spring" by the same author - if you have not yet seen it, I would highly recommend it in addition to "Martha Doesn't Say Sorry".

Happy Reading!

Martha doesn't say sorry because she doesn't understand sorry
By B. Mellinger
If you are into attachment parenting or empathic discipline - skip this book. It will make you angry and you'll feel sorry for poor Martha.

Martha acts like a normal, oh let's say, 4-year-old. In the beginning the book says she gives hugs and shares. That's because she understands those things. Then she dumps cookie dough on mom, paints dad, and makes loud noise while toddler brother sleeps. No one takes the time to explain how they feel when she does these things.

Then she wants to do things with her family. They *all* withhold their attention from her (ignore her) until she's forced to say a word she doesn't get! I'd argue the 4-year-old perceives love is being withheld until she says the word that everyone seems to think is great. OK. She said the word. Does she mean it? Does she even get it? Doubt it.

Repackaged Old Content from 1990
By Daddy Bear
I wrestled as to how to rate this book. I have virtually all of Susan Branch's books and have enjoyed them tremendously over the years. One of my favorites has been "Christmas from the Heart of the Home" from 1990. Therefore, upon seeing what was seemingly a new holiday offering from Ms. Branch, "Christmas Joy", I was, err... well; "joyful" at the prospect of more great things from Susan. Unfortunately, upon receipt and subsequent review, this "new" work is nothing more than a recycled version of the 1990 work "Christmas from the Heart of the Home", and in a tiny size about half that of the original book. Additionally, reading (re-reading) some of these pages, pages that were intended to appear in an 8X10 book is an exercise in reaching for a magnifying glass. For example, the verbatim reprint of "stocking stuffers" page from the 1990 original. For the first time in my life, I contemplated reading glasses.

In a word, I was very disappointed and will not be adding this book to my Susan Branch selections in the library, it became a re-gifted hand me down.

So, if you are considering buying this book (should I say booklet?), I would recommend that instead you seek out a used copy of "Christmas from the Heart of the Home" instead. You'll get about 75 more pages of content, and won't go blind trying to read some of the small font in this latest "copy-cat" version of the original version. I should have done more homework before getting my hopes up for a fresh offering.

If I had never seen the larger, more robust 1990 version with its extended content, I would have probably rated this book as a 4 or 5. Instead, I feel generous giving the work a 3. I found no new "Joy" in this purchase.

I loved this book. I can't wait to use her ideas for gifts, decorating, and for making cookies this year for Christmas. She does such a beautiful job illustrating and hand-lettering each of her books that it's a pleasure just to flip through them.

It’s collected-works time for the renowned author of such outstanding travel literature as Blue Highways (1983) and River-Horse (1999). Thirty magazine pieces comprise this assembly, with some articles ranging abroad, such as the author’s depictions of his ventures to New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, and Britain. Most, however, amble around America or radiate from the author’s home states of Missouri and Kansas. Several articles further extol what watchfulness can reveal about the Sunflower State, or about anywhere else one goes. An example of attentiveness rewarded is Heat-Moon’s evocation of history’s layers between his home and the mile distant to the Missouri River: a farm returning to forest, mounds and glyphs of vanished woodland Indians, a rails-to-trails dispute, and Lewis and Clark. Similarly, a sedulous search for Lake Superior’s piscine bounty, remembered from childhood highway trips as his father’s navigator, takes Heat-Moon through the geology and fish shacks of northeastern Minnesota. Alaska, Oregon, the Mississippi River, and Long Island additionally frame the author’s peregrinations and kaleidoscopic visualization of a place’s landscape, people, and past. Expect a clamor for this compendium from Heat-Moon’s legion of readers. --Gilbert Taylor

Globe Trekker at Home!
By New Jersey Nation
Multiple points on the map with a focus on his home in Missouri and the USA. William Trogdon (his real name) has been a model for travel writers since the 1980's. Whether walking on the Katy Trail or driving networks of country lanes down the Channel coast of the West Country of England, Trogdon's narrative flows easily and fully describes his experiences. These were originally a variety of past published magazine articles. I'll bet, though, you haven't read most of them. Three hundred ninety pages and most definitely a quick but eventful read. If you liked Blue Highways and PrairyErth, you'll want to read this book.

Blue Highways or The Blues
By Dearel J. Friend
I first discovered William Least Heat Moon by way of listening to him do a Larry King interview back in the 80's. He was promoting his book "Blue Highways" about his geographic and personal trek across the blue highways of America (reference to the blue lines designating secondary highways on travel maps). I bought his book and found myself mesmerized by the many talks he had with ordinary Americans along the way. What drew me so intensely into the story was Moon's ability to interweave his own personal torments (separation from his wife), his personal evaluations of that relationship, and his own personal discoveries about himself.
It would be the inspiration from Blue Highways that led me to buy a little mini-RV and set off to see America myself many years later when retirement from the military afforded me that luxury. I have since criss crossed our country many times, taken notes and banked memories of where I went and who I met along the way and am enriched forever in doing so.

Alas, it may be true that we all have "one book" in us...so far I've found that to be true with William Least Heat Moon. I have read each of his succeeding books and found them to be mundane and uninspired, too much drowning in scientific or social wanderings, to be readable. In the last one, "Road to Quoz" his writing was so badly done that I threw a $25.00 hardback into the trash can, so badly did I wish to escape it.

Perhaps some writers are at their best when they are most miserable; Moon was courting a sense of failure with his then wife, was lonely, a bit heart sick, was enriched by his need for introspection during the writing of Blue Highways..and those personal dynamics went far in that first wonderful memoir and travelogue. Prairie Earth and Road to Quoz was so bad I could not believe these words were coming from the same writer.

And so...since this is a collection of writings, spanning a wide time frame, you will, as many reviewers have noted, find some pearls...and some clunkers... I still re-read "Blue Highways" once in a blue moon...and climb into that old Ford panel van, with the bad water pump, sit in the passenger seat and bask in some prose poetry. I get to have a front row seat as Moon encounters fishermen and waitresses and native american college students and southerners still living as if it were 1930...and they are good company indeed. Perhaps you'll read this new book first...and then, for redemption, read "Blue Highways" and all will be forgiven.

Some unknown Least Heat-Moon
By Gene Bowker
I've been a fan of his since I first read Blue Highways years ago. Over the years, I've read most of his other books.

This is a compilation of stories which first appeared in Newspapers or Magazines over the last about 20+ years. Heat-Moon however has gone back into the stories and redone them to remove changes made by editors and to also add some "prologue" information to each story.

I think my favorite from the first half is his recounting his travels in 1961 to Faulkner's Hometown of Oxford, Mississippi where he hoped to meet the author at home. His travels around there were quite enjoyable and I found myself listening to the chapter again. (I'm listening to the audible version)

From Publishers Weekly
A sharp eye can find many literary references in this exciting fantasy manga. Oz, the main character, is turning 15 and is all set to be part of a ceremony, only to be dragged into a hellish place called the Abyss, for reasons he doesn't know. Previously, he was a rambunctious rich boy who didn't treat his servants well, but the Abyss is supposed to only take the worst of the worst. In this dark and disturbing world he meets a girl named Alice, whom he may or may not be able to trust, but who might be the only way out. The title clearly references Pandora from Greek mythology, while names, images, and characters play up their resemblances to the works of L. Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll (there are also allusions to Dante and Japanese mythology). Mochizuki's work, along with being creepy and hard to put down, slips in plenty of education along with his ornate, Goth art. With its mystery, symbolism and action-packed storyline, Oz's story will catch the attention of diverse readers. (Dec.)

Great Manga that should be given an chance!
By Sayaya
I have read many manga series, viewed many anime series, and so forth, and I must say -- Pandora Hearts is one of my most favorite manga of all time. Yes, there is bound to be some confusion when you are reading the first book because a lot of things happen right away, and since it is just the beginning -- you can say that this web of the unexplained will all be cleared up as the story goes along. Don't put off the book right away. It's mysterious and wonderfully enticing in a strange way. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. There is some deep characterization involved in this series, and you are bound to get attached to some of the characters.

This is ONLY the beginning
By Amanda
I'm a manga/anime fan, to say the least. I'm addicted to it like some people are addicted to crack. And you could say that I have a plethora of experience on reading manga and watching anime. Maybe it's because of that that I understood this volume perfectly. Maybe, maybe not. But I understood everything, and each character looked distinctly different, or at least I could make out the different characters. I have the peculiar ability to just absorb information when I read and not make remarks or think. That means I don't really get confused until the end of something. But this didn't really confuse me, which doesn't mean that I didn't have questions. But I fully expected them to be answered, and they are -- in later chapters.

I think that this volume is meant to be a mystery, meant to have a lot of questions that set the groundwork for the rest. This is one of my favorite series that I've reread multiple times. And considering how much manga I've read, that says something.

The first volume might confuse you a bit, but just continue. Read the second volume. And you'll slowly see the mystery unfold, which is one of the best parts of this series. The art is amazing, character development phenomenal, and plot astounding. Basically, I love this and demand you read it. It's really something you fall in love with as it goes on. I fell in love with all the characters.

If you're looking for an extremely lighthearted, fun, fluffy read that doesn't really mean much (such as K-On or Onidere), then this series is not for you. But if you're looking for a darker story, mystery, thrills, with glimpses of laugh out loud humor and amazing characters, then this is what you've been looking for. Actually, no matter what you're looking for, just pick it up and read it, kay? I swear you won't regret it. Well, you won't regret it after finishing the series, or even getting halfway through, I promise you.

This is and will probably always be one of my favorite series!

Pandora Hearts is simply amazing! The art work is enchanting the characters are easy to get attached to and the plot is always interesting and keeps getting more so through the series, if you've watched the anime I must say the manga is MUCH better (in my opinion). The one thing that I love and some people don't like is the series does make you think, some mangas don't ther set up so that you understand everything as it happens but Pandora Hearts really does make you think about it an Jun Mochizuki seems to love cliffhangers. I recommend this series to anyone who wants to read a manga that is funny and entertaining but also has lots of plot and gets somewhat dark.
