Really Good Book, but read the others first.

I have only one quibble with The Sworn, but it's not a small one: it's not nearly as good a jumping-on point for this world as the marketing push would have you believe. If you are in the mood for some good epic fantasy, you might enjoy, as I did, the experience of catching up, but there is serious catching-up to do.

The author has written four previous books set in this world, dealing with most of the same characters. The prologue of The Sworn summarizes these books in a brain-numbing flood of names and events, and if I hadn't already read and enjoyed the first chapter, I might have put the book down right then. In the book proper, there are at least five major characters and/or pairs of characters, following plotlines taking place in different kingdoms and cities, and it took me a long time to get involved in the stories that had the most history. The characters who seemed to have been created for this book were the ones I found most immediately approachable.

I was surprised at how widely the focus of the plot ranged across all the different characters, I suppose because I've been reading a lot of narrowly focused first-person narratives recently. The plots were starting to pull together by the end (at least into a few main threads), and I'm certain they will continue to do so in the sequels. This is true epic fantasy: dealing delicately with multiple threads simultaneously, the armies of good ranged against the forces of darkness, and the doings of kings and warriors.

The only reason the wide-ranging plot was a problem for me was that I kept being introduced to new characters and plotlines before I'd gotten a handle on the ones I had already read. It was chapter eight before the book returned to the characters I'd liked so much in chapter one.

I have to say that to my surprise, the use of vampires and werewolves in place of other fantasy races works really well. They slip beautifully into a supernatural spectrum that includes a very present spirit world, elemental and ghost-based magic, shamanism, and a well-explored system of goddess-worship.

By the end of the book, I was invested in all of the characters, and had a hard time putting it down. I really like the world, and I like the plot, although there's nothing groundbreaking about it.

Overall, I enjoyed this book as a solid, original, large-scale fantasy. I'll watch for the next one, now that I know the characters, and perhaps in the meantime I'll go back and read the previous books. Unfortunately, I didn't really start loving it until about half-way through, but if you're familiar with the characters already from reading the earlier books, give it another star.

The Sworn Review
By Epheros Aldor
In book one of The Fallen Kings Cycle, The Sworn, Gail Z. Martin continues the story she unleashed in the Chronicles of the Necromancer series. It takes place about six months later with the Margolan king Martris Drayke and his queen Kiara bitterly relishing their victory over their recent battle with the Blood Mages and Lord Curane. The war was hard on the kingdom with harvests extremely lean and a plague spreading across to the surrounding kingdoms. Kiara's homeland of Isencroft has put down a civil war and continues to deal with the Divisioninsts upset with their princess being married to the Margolan throne. Jonmarc Vahanian crushed a rival faction of power hungry vampires not pleased with serving the new human lord of Dark Haven and now faces a new challenge of taking in and caring for refugees fleeing the plague.

As each of the Winter Kingdoms try to put things right a new threat has returned following on the heels of the plague, as it did a hundred years before. The Durim, a cult of worshipers devoted to destruction and darkness, have been moving across the land and violating sacred barrows while releasing shadowy creatures with blood sacrifices to further their cause. But, prophesies are showing a new threat rising from across the ocean that may be in league with the Durim to bring about a War of Unmaking.

In The Sworn, Gail seems both merciless and ruthless to her characters by giving them just the barest shred of hope while immersing them yet again in a new threat. This story picks up quickly and builds into a relentless pace as she marches her readers, alongside her characters, to war. This story is filled with wonderful tidbits of knowledge that expand the realism of her world proving that Gail has put every ounce of effort to creating this tale for our enjoyment. Each of her characters, well known to the readers who've stayed with her through the other books, are just as familiar yet slightly more mature as they progress through each book. Readers just starting the tale can jump in here and still be taken on a grand ride filled with action, intrigue, and a bit of romance, but I'd advise them to indulge in the first four books just to get the full scope of what Gail has generously given to us.

Gail, like her characters, has matured in her storytelling, bringing a depth and clarity to her world that welcomes her readers with open arms. The Sworn takes all the lore of the Chronicles of the Necromancer stories the reader is familiar with and slowly brings the threat of a foreign kingdom into perspective with such careful attention usually not seen in other fantasy novels. These invaders marshal the reader to rally with the Winter Kingdoms and dare them to put down the book while the story unfolds before them.

Gail Z. Martin is destined to truly make a lasting mark on the fantasy scene and I'm certainly glad to have been on board since the start. 10 out of 10 stars!

Fantastic epic fantasy!
By misplaced cajun
The Sworn begins six months after Chronicles of the Necromancer ends. Peace is not in the cards for the Winter Kingdoms. Signs point to war on the horizon, a War of Unmaking. A dark force that has been sleeping threatens to awaken and rise again and an enemy of the Winter Kingdoms would raise the dead as his army.

The Sworn is fifth in Martin's Winter Kingdom world. World. Not series. The first four books that take place in the Winter Kingdoms are part of the Chronicles of the Necromancer. The Sworn revisits those characters and the setting, but begins the new Fallen Kings Cycle. As someone who jumped in with this book, I can say that I didn't have any real difficulty considering I'd not read the other titles. The beginning was a little rough as it's a bit of a recap, but once the plot of The Sworn begins, I didn't find it hard to follow at all.

True to epic fantasy form, there are a ton of characters and subplots for almost each of them. It's clear that each is connected, some from the previous books and some yet to be brought together. The Sworn is an intricately plotted story and a picture of amazing world building. In short, I loved it. Martin's Winter Kingdoms are filled with vampires and werewolves and magic and ghosts. I can't wait to find out what happens next.
